First of all, I would like to welcome all our new students to a new semester here at TSTC! To our returning students, welcome back and hope you all had a safe and happy holiday break! The Student Government Association is so excited and ready to start fresh for the year 2011! We hope that everyone enjoyed the events from the fall semester. We had Scooby Doo Night, Fallfest, and our annual Turkey Bowling. We had such a blast in 2010! Check out the campus calendar to see what we have planned for January! If you have any questions or concerns, please stop by the SGA Office in the Student Center Room 122 or contact us at 956.364.4342. Our door is always open and we love to hear from you!

Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) Under the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, the following is designated as directory information and may be made public unless the student desires to withhold all or any portion of it: name, local address, classification of coursework level, enrollment status, major field of study, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, dates of college attendance, degrees, certificates and awards received and most recent previous educational agency or institution attended by the student.

1. the right to inspect and review the academic record.

A currently enrolled student may prohibit the release of directory information by completing an appropriate request form in the Office of Admissions and Records during registration or within the first five (5) class days of each term. Under the Privacy Act of 1974, official records are not open to the public and will not be divulged without consent from the student.

3. the right of a student to consent to the release of semester credit hours taken at other institutions to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

Minors attending the college have the same right regarding their records as adult students. If a student is still a legal dependent of a parent or guardian, the parent has the right to access the records of the dependent student provided the parent can establish this dependency as defined by the Internal Revenue Code of 1954, section 152. This request must be made in person at the Office of Admissions and Records by providing a copy of the most recent federal income tax return and required picture identification. TSTC Harlingen complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and informs students of their rights under the act. Student’s rights covered by the act are as follows:

2. the intent of TSTC Harlingen is to limit the disclosure of information contained in a student’s academic record under the following circumstances: a. with the student’s prior written consent; b. as an item of directory information which the student has not refused the college to disclose; or c. under the FERPA provisions which allow a college to disclose information without the student’s prior written consent.

4. the right of a student to petition TSTC Harlingen to amend or correct any part of his/her academic record which is believed to be inaccurate, misleading, or in violation of the privacy or other rights of the student. When the college decides it will not amend or correct a student’s record, the student has the right to a hearing to present evidence that the record is inaccurate, misleading, or in violation of the privacy or other rights of the student. 5. the right of any person to file a complaint with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act Office, Department of Education, Family Policy Compliance Office, 400 Maryland Avenue SW, Washington, DC 20202-4605, if TSTC Harlingen violates the FERPA. If you have any questions concerning disclosure of information, contact the Office of Admissions and Records at 956.364.4320.

Support Services Office Participants of the Student Development Healthy Lifestyle Mini Institute were treated to a graduation ceremony and luncheon where they received a certificate for their accomplishment. The initiative was started by the Student Development Division to encourage critical thinking. Students who attend three of four workshops facilitated by the Support Services Office throughout the fall semester were honored at the luncheon.

Graduate

Spotlight Dental hygienist works with ‘Kool Smiles’ by Dave Ralph

Dental Hygiene majors are recognizable due to their bright smiles and one of the brightest smiles among the May 2010 graduates belonged to Joe Vela, a dental hygienist at “Kool Smiles” in Laredo.

He’s also quite recognizable standing at a height of 6 feet, 7 inches. He is one of a very few students to score a perfect 100 on the clinical exam for the Western Regional Examination Board, said Barb Bennett, co-director of the Allied Health Technology Division at TSTC Harlingen. “The Harlingen program has a 97 percent passing rate for the national boards because it’s a very tough program that thoroughly prepares its graduates,” Vela said. “I wanted a career where I would not worry about down-sizing for personnel. I also wanted good hours, good pay and a good income for my family.” He said that experiencing the “real world” of dental clinics during rotations, working closely with faculty and leading community service projects gave him a well rounded education.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole

by Laura Amaro, DMDT

A wonderful tale of courage and adventure, this film is an absolute must for everyone.

Legend of the Guardians is based on the fantasy book series Guardians of Ga'Hoole by Kathryn Lasky. The story is about a kidnapped owl, Soren, who manages to escape his attackers, the Pure Ones, and sets off to find the legendary Guardians of Ga'Hoole in order to save his family. The film focuses on the first three books in the series so a sequel to Legend of the Guardians could be in the works.

The thought of owls wearing viking-like helmets and metal claws should be enough to persuade anyone into watching this movie. The hyper-realistic animation is absolutely breathtaking. Children will love the kid-friendly humor while the battle scenes are exciting enough to not bore the most jaded teenager. A word of caution for those bringing little ones to the theater: Although the battle scenes are bloodless, they have the potential to scare younger children.

New LRC Releases!

Cross Fire by James Patterson

Detective Alex Cross and Bree's wedding plans are put on hold when Alex is called to the scene of the perfectly executed assassination of two of Washington D.C.'s most corrupt: a dirty congressmen and an underhanded lobbyist. Next, the elusive gunman begins picking off other crooked politicians, sparking a blaze of theories--is the marksman a hero or a vigilante? With a supercharged blend of action, deception, and suspense, Cross Fire is James Patterson's most visceral and exciting Alex Cross novel ever.

The Christmas Chronicles: The Legend of Santa Claus by Tim Slover

In this new holiday classic, Tim Slover crafts a marvelous, magical novel about how Santa Claus became the man he is today. Snow is falling, and the clock ticks toward midnight on Christmas Eve while countless children, too excited to sleep, anticipate the arrival of Santa Claus. But in Tim Slover's deeply charming and utterly thrilling new novel, that's the end rather than the beginning of the story. In this richly imagined tale of Santa's origins, the man in full finally emerges.

Louisa May Alcott: A Personal Biography by Susan Cheever

Louisa May Alcott never intended to write Little Women. She had dismissed her publisher's pleas for such a novel. Written out of necessity to support her family, the book had an astounding success that changed her life. Alcott's independence defied the conventional wisdom, and her personal choices and literary legacy continue to inspire generations of women. Cheever brings a unique perspective to Louisa May Alcott's life as a woman, a daughter, and a working writer.
