Student Success Isn’t Just an Office!
by Joshua Hernandez
It’s an ever-evolving, resource-abundant, college-savvy source of knowledge that makes for an excellent alternative for those feeling lost or contemplating leaving college. The Student Success Office itself is made up of different departments and resources completely dedicated to assisting TSTC students! We are like the old cartoon “Captain Planet.” Do you remember that? The characters combine the powers of their rings to create the mighty Captain Planet, who then saves the world from eternal mistreatment. It may be too old a cartoon for some of you, but never the less, we are similar to that – slightly less supernatural of course.
We even have computer labs with high-speed Internet and Skype capabilities so you can do research, homework, and even video chat with a future college such as UTB, UTPA, UTSA and more. We can help you with almost anything. We only say “almost” because we can’t make money grow on trees, although we are working on it.
All of our departments and programs overlap and create a powerful support structure for you.
Trust us! We’ve been in your shoes – metaphorically speaking of course. Everyone from Director to Coordinator and Advisor to Mentor/Tutor have pledged to dedicate themselves to your success.
Are you lost when it comes to college?
Are your Accuplacer scores bringing you down?
We have mentors! Are you unsure of what program to enter?
We provide tours!
We have an Accuplacer Tutorial Program! Are your grades slipping and you need help?
We have tutors! Dont hesitate for another second! Stop by the office, give us a call or go online and visit us at: www.youtube.com/TSTCgst www.harlingen.tstc.edu/oss www.twitter.com/TSTCjosh www.studentsuccessoffice.posterous.com

Here are some easy to follow tips for getting good nutrition: 1. Don‘t skip meals! It is best to have 5-6 meals or snacks, every 3-4 hours. 2. Drink 6-8 glasses of water a day. Not only will you be flushing out toxins, drinking a glass of water before a meal can prevent you from overeating at meals. 3. Exercise! This increases your metabolism, so try to exercise 3-5 times a week. 4. Eat red, yellow, orange, and green vegetables. Vegetables are low in calories, loaded with vitamins and antioxidants, and they’re a great source of fiber! 5. Eat a variety of fruits. Fruits are low in calories, high in water, and loaded with antioxidants, vitamins and fiber. It can also help to satisfy your “sweet tooth.” 6. Make time for breakfast! It helps fuel your body for the day and gets your metabolism going. 7. Eat lean proteins at every meal. Eating lean proteins help to build and maintain healthy muscles. They also take longer to digest so you feel full longer.
8. Eat whole grains. Whole grains fuel and energize your body. 9. Watch the fat! Choose low fat or fat free foods when possible. The “right” kind of fat is essential to keeping your body healthy. 10. Drink in moderation. Alcohol not only has tons of calories, it is a toxin that affects the tissues and organs of the body. 11. Be mindful of portion control! Watching how much you eat is just as important as the types of food you eat. 12. Choose fresh over packaged meals. Packaged meat may have lower nutrition and higher calories. 13. Cut out the soda. Cut down sugar intake from soda, coffee and milk. 14. Treat yourself sometimes! We all deserve a treat, so go ahead. Just watch your serving sizes and how many treats you allow yourself.

On February 10, 2010 Google launched its response into the social media world of microblogging in the form of a new product called Google Buzz. Built and implemented right under the noses of the average Gmail user, Google Buzz has turned your frequent contact list and extended contacts into your new social network. Marked with a new tab, labeled “buzz,” users can view a feed of small status updates from other Gmail users who they have previously conversed with through e-mail. The feed allows updates in the form of text, pictures from Flickr and Picasa services, and embedded videos that are shown and accessible right in the feed. Some of the buzz, around Google Buzz, shows concern for the lack of control over certain configurations and privacy settings. Part of the ease of use that Google has taken into their own hands is the fact that your entire contact list is automatically followed. This can be a bit concerning for those that oh, lets say…don’t want that! Also, Buzz is set to use your e-mail address itself as your handle viewable to those following you. Sure this can be viewed as an open social experience, but still doesn’t change the fact that your personal e-mail address is now virtually accessible to anyone now, even those who are not directly following you. Overall Google Buzz seems like a fun and social product, and I’m thinking Google played it kind of safe this time after getting burned off Google Wave a bit. I am sure more uses and fixes will come soon enough and I’m sure Google is hoping that Buzz will find its proper place and audience as well. Google has been there for a lot of us, and mostly at no cost, but I hope they know what the’re doing going up against a force like Twitter. -update: Google is answering the cries and adding privacy settings and more control. http://buzz.google.com 16
TECH NEWS FROM A GEEK

Apple iPad The
On January 27, 2010 Apple held the technology community in suspense with its latest addition to its lineup of products. Although many already knew that Apple’s new device would be some variation of a tablet of some sort, most were caught off guard with the name of this new device. The Apple iPad. At about 1.5 pounds and ½ inch deep, the iPad displays a 9.7 inch screen at a stunning 1024 x 768 pixel resolution. Apple has set in place a 10 hour battery with an astounding stand-by battery life of about a month! Apple has also developed its own processor in house called the A4. The A4 is running at 1GHz, high performance and low power. As far as the interface and software features there really is nothing new to set it apart from those used to the iPhone/iTouch user interface. No camera, whereas many visualized it as a great video conferencing device, but rumors are circulating that the second generation will implement the camera. Let’s hope so.

STUDY: Social Media & Online Mobile use among Teens and Young Adults
by Lorenzo Garcia, DMDT
In a recent study done by the Pew Internet Research Center, teen and young adult blogging has declined in the past four years or so. Since 2006 the trends of social networking sites have evolved with the introduction of rising networks such as Facebook and Twitter. The wave of macro-blogging has transitioned to micro-blogging.
Pew reports that 14 percent of online teens say they blog, which is a drop 28 percent in 2006. Consequently, the likelihood of teens to comment on blogs or social network sites has also dropped from 76 percent to 52 percent since 2006. A number of young adults (18-24) still carry on with blogs, who were in fact the ones that grew along side it. The most interesting piece of information that I have found, from the research Pew has done, was the fact that teens are beginning to go against their statistical nature of early adoption with new technologies. Although the social media trend is gearing toward the sharing of information through small posts and sharing media, such as pictures and video, teens are not jumping on micro-blogging services such as Twitter. Only about 8 percent of teens online are on Twitter while the once teen bloggers, who are now the young adult and 30+ genre, are finding their way onto the micro-blogging and status update services. Many teens are satisfied with the combined extensions that Myspace/FFacebook and text messaging provide. It’s enough for them. Some teens are even unsure of what Twitter really is, assuming it is a service that some celebrities use. In the long run this could mean many things, and I am sure that the social networking site monsters are trying to understand this as well. For now it would seem that younger audiences are straying toward uploading themselves into profiles online, while the social blogger and journalist captivate the young adult and older crowds.

Shutter Island
by Lorenzo Garcia, DMDT
Martin Scorsese is famous for his great works such as Goodfellas, Raging Bull, The Departed, Taxi Driver and The Aviator.
Rated R 2 hr 18 min Mystery / Thriller
Martin Scorsese’s new film, “Shutter Island,” is receiving a lot of buzz for the supposed rug that he pulls from under the audience in the final act. I can understand a level of reaction, but it seems like critics are offended at this almost “Deus Ex Machina,” which is actually due to the fidelity to the original novel.
“Shutter Island” is a psychological-thriller of two U.S. Marshals, Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Ruffalo), who are sent to investigate the disappearance of an inmate from the infamous Shutter Island. Shutter Island is home to an up-scale mental facility that only takes the most severe and violent patients. Things begin to go south and nothing seems to add up for Teddy and
Percy Jackson
his partner, but he’s also there for reasons of his own. Someone from his past is allegedly an inmate and responsible for a lot of pain in Teddy’s life. From the very beginning one can notice the heavy hand of Scorsese on the visual palette and wonderful lighting in this film. The tone of the film greatly matched all the colors that were not only included but the ones that were strategically excluded as well. The film does quite a number on the psyche of the audience as far as whom you think you can trust or believe is even really there. My favorite aspect of the film, by far, is the way the story unfolds as Teddy visits different areas of the island. Every new area is treated as a visual chapter and makes it all seem like an elaborate board game or a map legend on the sleeve of a book. My overall experience was enthralling and completely captive in the world, though small, this film created.
& the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
Whimsical, absorbing and entertaining, “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief” is not only for the younger crowd but for any mythology loving individual, as well. I was impressed by how engaging it was. The two hours seemed to just fly by. I love Greek mythology and enjoy the premise as far as the movie of the first book goes. However, Rated PG 1 hr 58 min that doesn't mean that it didn't have its fair share of plot Fantasy / Adv. loopholes. I didn't like that most of the mythology background was missing and that it was assumed knowledge. Also, the screenplay is very loosely based on the book. The characters are older in the movie; yet, I still enjoyed the adaptation. There is no way the movie could have all the content of the book. Percy, a descendent of a Greek god, Athena’s daughter Annabeth and the Satyr Grover set out on a modern day battle. Zeus’s lightning bolt has gone missing and while Percy is the prime suspect, rivalry is ablaze among the gods on Mount Olympus. Percy and his friends must travel to Hades and back to prove
by Leslie Nelson, DMDT
his innocence and save his mother. Some actors of note are Pierce Brosnan, who plays a school teacher and a Centaur, Uma Therman as Medusa and Rosario Dawson as Persephone. Although the movie has no building blocks about Greek mythology (better know your stuff!), the storyline itself has slight factual references to actual mythological stories about Zeus and the other gods. For example, in the movie Annabeth is Athena's daughter, but in the actual Greek myth Athena was eternally devoted to chastity and never had children. As for Persephone, she was indeed a consort of Hades, Lord of the Underworld. Zeus demanded her return to Earth, but in the movie she rules as Queen of the Underworld. Well written and with great CGI, the best scenes are of the underworld and Hades appearing out of fire. The awesome sword play was well done and not so over-the-top. The soundtrack itself is energy packed and delightful, very fitting for the movie! All in all this is a thrilling adventure movie for anyone ages 8-80. This is Greek mythology retold in a modern day setting. I’m definitely buying the DVD! If you’re interested in Greek mythology films, stay tuned for “Clash of the Titans” next month!

Thinking Of Peace That Doesn't Exist Alma Hernandez, EA Take a deep breath, keep your nerves calm, calm calm calm. The ocean breeze blows softly and swiftly against my face. My hair tangles with the wet mist of the dew filled air, I smile knowing the thrill that is to come. Just one step. Tingles of fear flow throughout my body as the thought of falling sets place into my mind. For a second I almost take a step back, but I don't. Take a deep breath, keep your nerves calm, calm calm calm. I laugh as the wind picks up and I can smell the salty water of the dark blue ocean. I
laugh again as my heart throbs painfully, I laugh to keep the tears from falling out of the tearducts that hold them in place. My feelings have filled the bottle in which I keep them in, filled to the brim, filled with sorrow. My laughter has stopped though there was no humor in the first place, a tear has escaped my eye. Take a deep breath, keep your nerves calm, calm calm calm. I open my eyes. I set the tears free. And I take the final step.
Them Who Laugh
--desire--
Lorenzo Garcia, DMDT
Benji Huerta, CSMT
They are perceptive people that I am like in some ways, but others are far from me.
luminous feeling of my heart, ending at times and then it starts. lucid now what i feel for thee, as your aura flows through me mysterious eyes, gentle smile. chills down my spine all the while. good intentions are hard to find, but yours is the face that comes to mind. scared of emotions, my lost nightmare, but for thee, i will dare. your trust seems hard to obtain but slowly you begin to speak of your pain. beautiful eyes, burning bright, eyes who haunt my dreams at night. full of excitement, i feel the heat as my heart begins to beat. for you have started in me a fire, and it is your heart which i desire.
They are demons of different shapes, but all with smiles tattooed to their faces. They have one arm to point at what they perceive. To laugh, and audibly snicker about what they see. I am like them in the way that we both see what others cannot. Yet I do not have the drive or desire to laugh at every imperfection I see. They choose not to accept those outside of their ring, but somehow I find myself among. I have crept in. Mimicking their laughing as I did. I was unnoticed. It’s difficult to stand among them. To wear a mask and match the common expression without losing myself. Why do I do it? ‌I need to use them to get closer.
Untitled
Closer to my goal. They are merely a pool I draw from in this stage in my life. A ticket that others who have been there longer wish to have.
Melissa Sustaita, EA
Not to say that mine was attained easily, but they are not like them in the slightest. I hate to relate to them, but I admit, it is the only reason I was able to get so close.
I see other people happy, but why do I feel sad?
I will always be apart from them, but among them. Until I no longer have a need to be.
Sometimes, I feel lost in the world. Or even alone. I should be happy because I am free. There are times that I have to show a smile so people can see that I am OK. But now, my soul is happy, so I am happy to be me. Remember to love yourself before you love others!
