FROM YOUR
sga president Belinda Palomino Hello, Mustangs!
I hope everyone enjoyed our 80's themed Welcome Week and had a great time joining a club and meeting new people. Last month we had a fantastic time helping out with Trash Bash sponsored by Harlingen Proud. On January 21, two TSTC teams helped clean up the Commerce, Harrison, and Expressway area.
This month two of the most highly anticipated events are taking over February. On February 11, poker chips, Elvis, a wedding booth, casino games, and lots of cool auction items are just a few of the many reasons why you should come out to our Cultural Arts Center from 7-10pm. The entrance fee is only a teddy bear which will be donated to the Sunny Glen Children’s Home in San Benito. Then on February 24, TSTC gets ready to crown their new royal couple at the Mr. & Ms. TSTC 2010 scholarship competition. This event, which will be held at our Wellness & Sports Center, is a great
opportunity for you to come and enjoy some great performances and witness TSTC's new ambassadors get crowned. We will also be holding our monthly Wellness Walk, a Learning to Lead workshop, and our 3rd annual Dating Game. If you have any suggestions, concerns, or ideas, feel free to stop by our office in the Student Center in room 122 or call us at 364.4343. We love to hear from you!

Mechatronics Robotics Competition Robotics competition at Texas State Technical College Harlingen looked like a fun game from the sidelines. But the Mechatronics Technology and Biomedical Equipment Technology students built the robots and refined the computerized control systems to gain knowledge and skills in preparation for future jobs. Industry people like Lynne Daniels, operating recruiting supervisor with the Mid-Continent/Alaska Business Unit of Chevron North America Exploration and Production, took a special interest in the students’ progress. “Chevron is a team-oriented company and the cooperation required on these robotics projects prepares and develops students to work within our culture,” she said. “If the team succeeds we all succeed and if the team fails we all fail.”
Leo Gutierrez, teaching lab assistant in the MT Program, said that a transmitter activated the autonomous mode and each robot’s software detected the infrared path to follow using ultrasonic sensors. The robots’ goal was to roll along the path, pick up a red ball, continue on another path and then activate decoders at the “disposal site” or bin to drop off the “mine.” The red ball for the autonomous section of the games earned the most points. Then, remote controls took over and students attempted to of Robotics 1305 retrieve white balls for more points.
Fundamentals equip students with a multiple skills to prepare for changing demands of Roberto Rivera, instructor and chairman for the BET Program, said courses like Fundamentals of the future work force.
Twelve teams of MT and BET students constructed the robots from Erector sets. Two robots competed to reach and set aside as many plastic balls – or “mines” – as possible in the double-elimination tournament. Each team had one minute for its robot to operate in an autonomous mode to retrieve a red ball. Then, the remote controllers had one minute to try and gather as many white balls as possible.
A robot dubbed “King Ratatat” made and operated by BET students Boris Mayfield and Douglas Marquez and MT student Thomas O’Rourke claimed first place. “The robot has options and it performs based on the way it recognizes symbols in the computer program,” said O’Rourke, who completed his first semester at TSTC and plans on an engineering career.
10
He said that the biggest challenge for teams involved programming precision movements to start, stop and then switch to a new direction. Some robots succumbed to motor problems that required spare parts and a few lost points due to drained batteries. O’Rourke credited extra practice with the remote control equipment as an important factor in the victory.

Avatar
by Lorenzo Garcia, DMDT
James Cameron dishes out a major motion picture not only on a grand scale but one of new technical feats.
Avatar is a story of an injured marine who grasps a chance at embodying an alien, or “avatar,” that he controls remotely to learn and live among the natives of a planet called Pandora. The indigenous people, the Na‘Vi, are 10 feet tall with blue Rated PG-13 1 hr 38 min skin and have a connection to the planet and all its living Sci-Fi / Thriller things. The Na‘Vi, however, have established their home tree over a large and valuable mineral deposit that the high-consumerism profiled humans are after. The purpose of the “avatars” is to gain the trust of the Na’Vi and attempt to settle the matter diplomatically before human demolition teams are scheduled to arrive. The humans will reach the deposit in one way or another; the
decision the Na’Vi must face is whether they will suffer casualties during the mineral extraction.
The film has an extremely wide spectrum of elements it speaks to such as war, commercialism, community, spiritualism and the environment to name a few. The storyline is the only weak part of the film that I can pick out. The plot was a bit predictable and many critics are mumbling about the many tones that are inspired of classic tales like “Pocahontas,” “Dances with Wolves” and that it has an overdone “discovery of a new world” feel to it. To speak of the technical side of the film, James Cameron used a method called stereoscopy, in which two high definition cameras were positioned at different angles of the subject to create the illusion of a three dimensional depth of field. James Cameron’s “Avatar” is a cinematic landmark that I would advise none to miss. A theatrical experience is a must.

It contains first person accounts of women's suffrage and the horrific abuse they suffer. While reading about women and children living in slavery and held against their will under extreme abuse, the courageous stories of those who escaped with their lives is uplifting and moving. This is the most powerful, inspiring, eye-opening book I have ever read. One of my favorite quotes is, “American feminism must become less parochial, so that it is every bit as concerned with sex slavery in Asia as with Title IX sports programs in Illinois. It is already making good progress in this respect. Likewise, Americans of faith should try as hard to save the lives of African women as the lives of unborn fetuses. In short, all of us need to become more cosmopolitan and aware of global repression based on gender.” I finished reading this book feeling inspired to do something more to help women. There is so much work to be done. It is said in Pirkei Avot, Sayings of the Fathers, “It is not up to us to finish work, neither are we free to walk away from it.” What actions will you take?

horoscopes FOR YOUR ENTERTAINMENT ONLY!
by Madame Brown
Aries 3/21–4/19 It’s a new semester and everyone has to adjust. A lot of last year's difficulties boiled down to a lot of fiddly little details getting in the way of you realizing you’re awesome at what you do. Let's be honest about it, Aries: struggling with the small stuff just isn't your style. So relax! Any exam or test will be papitas. No te mortifiques. Taurus 4/20–5/20 Your sister, brother, or cousin may be the subject of enormous news as you begin the New Year, so keep your cell phone powered up. As a matter of fact, be sure not to lose your cell phone - tape your business card on the back of your phone. Also investigate by collecting brochures and scheduling interviews on campuses. Gemini 5/21–6/21 Your emotions are stronger than usual now, but you need to keep them from interfering with your plans. Try not to approach it too quickly, and yes I know it is hard for you twins, but it’s the best way to learn and see the other person’s side of things. All this will bring on a time to make a number of major decisions and lo, and behold, it also seems that someone you'd have never thought to ask for help, someone at a higher level or very experienced, will help you at the moment you need advice and help the most. You may already know this to be true, but, if not, you will soon find this person who believes in you so much. Cancer 6/22–7/22 Start over with something or someone that has been troubling you. Your amazing emotional energy should help you figure out how to make a real difference with your new take on the project. You generally prefer people to be direct and express themselves honestly. So you thought you could play hard to get with, but, yes, crabby pants, you’re going to fall into deep “like,” so just let it happen. Be you and just that. Leo 7/23–8/22 You can dream up new ideas that will be popular with the right people, like your boss, for example. It's a good time for you to get yourself moving in a new direction. You’re in a hurry to get things done, as usual, but it's something you can't help. Take a deep breath. It’s not your fault you’re a creative genius. Virgo 8/23–9/22 You can't go solo today, or you are sure to miss out on some important events. Its time for lunch with co-workers and, yes, pizza delivered to the office could give you the new title “THE BESTEST BOSS EVER!” Stay in touch with the major players in your life, and try to say yes to all invitations. It’s because you’re so awesome that many people just want to enjoy simple conversations with you.
Libra 9/23–10/22 You are about to become very energized by your plans - with Uranus sending a perfect beam to Venus (beauty) and the Sun (strength), you are likely to get a sudden home/family-related or friend's tip. When the news arrives, it will come like a lightning bolt, so be ready to make nearly instant decisions. Just remember to address things with diplomacy. Whatever comes, you will be ready and able to assimilate into any environment from work to home to even outside projects. Scorpio 10/23–11/21 Use your social energy to make a difference! You can influence people just by engaging them in seemingly idle conversation. Most of the heavy lifting is done deep below the surface. You have true leadership qualities. You’re a great observer so when it’s time to organize a staff meeting or even write an e-mail to your co-workers involving functions on campus you will be admired and appreciated because, with you, it will get done. Sagittarius 11/22–12/21 It's time for you and your best friend, mate or business partner to re-evaluate things. That doesn't mean it's time to split up, but you really do need to make sure that everyone is happy. Something tells me that it’s probably evaluation time at the office, but I’m sure that you, being the tactful Sagittarius that you are, will be fine. Capricorn 12/22–1/19 It’s business as usual with you and lucky for you you’re great at it. Someone comes your way with a totally new idea for getting things done, or maybe for launching a business or some other arrangement. Hear them out and consider it seriously. It's a good time to make a move! Tap into your deeply creative subconscious and you can dream up new ideas that are sure to be popular with the right people. It's a good time for you, ENJOY! Aquarius 1/20–2/18 New job opportunities are sure to come your way in some form whether it is on campus, in the office, or maybe just helping a new club or one of the existing TSTC clubs. It’s always good to get students involved in more than just classes. Remember TSTC wants people to know how much it has to offer. The New Year brings in great promise especially for those going back to school so maybe it’s time to ask others, “What’s your dream?” Pisces 2/19–3/20 You’re a groovy sign and, being the fishy that you are, you often do go with the flow of things. Your presence always brings a sense of reassurance for others especially during the creative blocks. So when your neighbor is in class chuggin’ down their 6th energy drink, you sit back and relax. Your groovyness can easily see tension in others. Help those out around you and karma will be kind and work in your favor.
