Mustang Magazine | April 2010
FROM YOUR
sga president Belinda Palomino Hello, Mustangs!
As the semester is coming to an end, your Student Government officers are getting ready to pass their torches. I would like to encourage everyone to stop by the voting booths starting April 12 to vote for your new SGA officers.
April will bring our highly anticipated tradition, Techsan Day! There will be tons of games, rides,
food, and fun for everybody. All classes will be released early so come out, support the student clubs, and have a good time!
Congratulations to all the spring graduates! I know your hard work, perseverance, and dedication will pay off.
April 16 brings our Student Government Association Leadership Banquet. This awards ceremony is like TSTC’s very own Oscars. Clubs, students, and advisors will receive awards for all their hard work throughout the year. Awards include Student of the Year, Advisor of the Year, Service Project of the Year, and Student Club of the Year. If you are in a club and would like to attend please see your club officers or advisor!
If you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns, please call us at 956.364.4343 or 956.364.4342 or stop by the SGA office. Our door is always open and we love to hear from you! Have a fantastic summer and stay involved!
A Final Message From the Outgoing SGA Officers Belinda Palomino SGA President
Shannon Williams SGA Vice President
~ James Pina SGA Historian
Aline Zamudio SGA Treasurer
It has been a pleasure and an exciting ride representing the student body as your president. It has been a great learning experience and I will always have a little place in my heart for TSTC. I would like to extend a warm thank you to my fellow officers for their hard work and amazing sense of humor, to Adele & Lissete for your advice and encouragement, and of course, to all the students for all the unforgettable memories.
Sandie Vela SGA Secretary
When I started attending TSTC I never thought I would be a part of SGA. I didn’t know how to be a student leader, much less become part of that family. Once I part of the Dental Explorers, Mrs. Brunson pushed us to get involved. Thank you for making attendance to events MANDATORY, otherwise the opportunities that have come, would have never been.
Georgeann, thank you for showing me the ropes during my first term and for being a wonderful friend. To Belly, Shanno, D-lie, Jamesies, Amanda, “A”line and of course, Josh, thank you so much for making this last term a fun and memorable one. Adele, you’re a great boss, lady. Thank you for taking time to listen to me vent. To the student body, you guys are what make student life what it is. Thank you, stay involved, and sign in!
Having Adele and Lissete as mentors has helped me learn to be the type of leader I had hoped to be. While in SGA, I had the pleasure of working with the coolest people I have ever met! Belinda is a cute, funny version of Gen. Patton. The happiness that Shannon radiates when entering a room is contagious! Sandie’s photo can be seen in any dictionary under “sweet” and “hilarious.” Aline is a joy to be around, and Eli is the nicest dude I know. They say laughter is the best medicine, and I know this to be true. Ever since I’ve started working with these amazing people, I have not had a single bad day!
Where has the time gone?! Joining SGA has made my college experience in Texas unforgettable! I’ve met great people and I’ve learned so much from my fellow officers. I want to send a HUGE thank you to Belly, D-lie, Aline, Sandals, and James for always being there and making every event, like James says, a "blasty blast." Thank you Lissete and Adele for your tireless leadership, and finally, the Marketing Department and Media Center for helping us make all of our events a success. Thank you TSTC!
This semester has been really great! I thank Ms. Adele Clinton and Belinda for offering me this position. Working here has made me a better person and a leader. I have learned so much from each one of the SGA officers.
Eli Torres SGA Parliamentarian
I’ve enjoyed serving you as your Parliamentarian this past year. Being a part of SGA has been a great experience for me. It has taught me so much, and it’s given me the opportunity to meet such great people. Through SGA, I’ve made countless friends and memories!

Student Success Tips Provided by the Student Success Office
3 Unmistakable and Overlooked Tips for College Courses Know the Course Syllabus - You know the 50,000-page packet the instructor hands out the first day of class? The course syllabus has ALL the important information you are going to need in order to pass the course. It contains: 1. The instructor’s name, office hours and contact information 2. Grading criteria for the course 3. Critical Dates for assignments, quizzes, projects and tests 4. The attendance policy 5. Required textbooks, course outline (schedule), materials, etc. Be sure to keep your syllabus readily available and read it often throughout the semester. Keep yourself organized! Trust me, it’ll pay off.
Know the Grading System - This semester is over, but this tip goes for next semester. At the very beginning, be sure to find answers to these questions: 1. What factors will the instructor use to give me a final grade in this course? (What is the grading criteria?) 2. How much do quizzes and tests count toward my final grade? How many quizzes and tests will I have? Is there a make-up policy? 3. How do homework assignments affect my grade? Are they worth more or less than the tests? 4. Does attendance count toward a grade? Knowing the answers to those questions will make your life a whole lot easier. It will allow you to make decisions on when you can miss class or if you should concentrate on making up homework assignments or study for the next test.
Know Your Instructors
1. Remember the instructor’s name, phone number and office location that’s on your class syllabus. You may need it later. 2. During the semester, you may need to go to the course subject’s department to leave a homework assignment for your instructor. What is your instructor’s preferred method for this? 3. You do not need an appointment to go to your instructor’s office at any point in time…or do you? Another reason to know your instructor.

All Natural Acne Remedies@ If not cured at the starting level, acne can be really troublesome. It is necessary to start the cure early to avoid the later problems that could lead to drastic scarring on your skin. Acne can be treated at home but it demands special care. Try some of these natural remedies to help keep your face clean, fresh and healthy! • Honey has fantastic anti-bacterial properties! When using honey on your skin always go for facial masks. Try this mix once a week! 1 tbsp honey 1 tbsp of a natural exfoliant (Oatmeal for dry skin or baking soda for normal skin) Try adding light brown sugar for a natural summer glow and a great scrub for knees and elbows! • Lemon juice and rose water contain natural acids which can help in curing acne. Try mixing equal parts lemon juice and rose water and apply directly on your skin with cotton swab like you would with any other astringent. Some irritation is possible initially. If needed, simply rinse and use solely rose water to cleanse. The results can be fantastic if you apply 3 times a week. • Aloe vera helps heal pimples! Cut the full leaf from the aloe vera plant and then cut a slit down the middle and allow the yellow jelly-like material to drain. Apply this liquid directly on your skin and repeat this procedure every day to get the best results.
• Vitamin A is also an acne buster. It helps keep a clear complexion, so stock up on foods like carrots, mangos, and spinach. • Zinc is an antioxidant that helps promote a clear complexion. Try eating zinc rich foods such as avocados, artichokes and cheese.
Extra Tips
• Don’t try to squeeze pimples or blackheads because they can leave "stains" or scarring on your face.
When Using Exfoliants
• Use only once to twice a week. • Rub gently in a circular motion and pat dry. • Always moisturize after exfoliating. • Any excess product must be discarded, or use on your knees and elbows.
• Hair contains oils and other extracts which can affect your skin. If you have long hair or bangs try to keep them away from your face, especially the areas which are affected by acne. • Drink plenty of water! (8 glasses a day) to help "flush" toxins from your body, thus leaving supple fresh skin.
*See a health or medical specialist about severe or persistant acne. Beware of possible allergic reactions.
Baked Chicken Teriyaki Ingredients
1 tablespoon cornstarch 1 tablespoon cold water ½ cup white sugar ½ cup soy sauce ¼ cup cider vinegar 1 clove garlic, minced ½ teaspoon ground ginger ½ teaspoon ground black pepper 12 skinless chicken thighs
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 425 °F (220 °C). 2. In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the cornstarch, cold water, sugar, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, ginger and ground black pepper. Let simmer, stirring frequently, until sauce thickens and bubbles. 3. Place chicken pieces in a lightly greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Brush chicken with the sauce. Turn pieces over, and brush again. 4. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Turn pieces over, and bake for another 30 minutes, until no longer pink and juices run clear. Brush with sauce every 10 minutes during cooking. *Add lemon juice for an extra zing if desired!

HDTV in 3D
Though the technology of television can be traced back to the early 1900s, the first recognizable television to someone today would have been in a London department store created by Scottish inventor John Logie Baird. We’ve come a long way from that day in 1925. Color television, stereo channels, and even VHS tapes contributed to the bigwigs’ belief that these advancements would kill the theater business. Eventually, we arrived at DVDs and televisions that could support High Definition video. The war between HD-DVD and Blu-ray brought the next big scare that left the oblivious and uninformed befuddled when their rabbit ear antennas were not enough after America switched to Digital Broadcasting. Now we’ve reached the new frontier of 3 Dimension Television. We’ve seen the technology in theaters, sure, but now Panasonic is making the leap and producing VT20 Series HDTV DMP-BDT300 Blu-ray Disc™ Player a consumer level Full High Definition 3D unit. Panasonic explains that due to 1 Pair of 3D Active Shutter Glasses previous space limitations on DVDs, the two compiled images needed to produced the 3D viewing experience suffered quality loss just so that a full feature would fit on a disc. Today, however, with the advancement of Blu-Ray technology, the disc capacity has made the jump from a potential 8GB to 100GB. In recent development, Pioneer has created a unit that can hold 500GB, but that’s another story. The total Panasonic Full HD 3D System package consists of:
Of course, the race is on to see who gets more buzz and market share within this new 3DTV space. Sony and Samsung are among the others that are joining in the challenge and each with their own catchy names and taglines.
The Conan Effect Early this March, former host of “The Tonight Show” and NBC star, Conan O’Brien pulled an online stunt that not only got a lot of attention from the online crowd and news stations, but also changed a young girl’s life.
Soon after the NBC debacle that led to Conan’s dethronement, an official agreement with NBC has not allowed him to appear on television until the fall season. This wasn’t enough to stop the character that is Conan O’Brien, who has especially been known for his knack to exploit any loophole that he may stumble upon. Conan exploded on the scene of the social media site Twitter and almost overnight gained an army of followers to command. With over half a million subscribers and counting, some were glaring at the fact that he had not yet chosen to follow any users himself. There was still admiration, but users couldn’t help but see the one-sided image. Finally, and from almost out of nowhere, Conan posted a tweet (update) that he was choosing a random person to follow and declared that this girl’s life was about to change. “I've decided to follow someone at random. She likes peanut butter and gummy dinosaurs. Sarah Killen, your life is about to change.” - @ConanOBrien
immense. Killen was interviewed by everyone who could get her on the phone, gained some major attention and received many gifts, such as a brand new Apple iMac from a businessman in Florida. Perhaps the more touching story is the fact that Sarah Killen and her fiancé had been trying to save money for a wedding. Before Conan’s move, the couple only had $30 saved. Killen has now received a custom designer wedding dress from New York, a cake, catering and donations among other things. Currently Sarah Killen stands at just over 28,000 followers and counting from her initial handful of about three to five. She is using her new status for good and re-tweeting (re-posting) attention for others causes and has also decorated her Twitter page with her support for breast cancer.
“Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen." – Conan O’Brien
It is safe to say that, from a move like this, Conan O’Brien has not lost his thunder. Conan has scheduled a tour across the country and it is selling out fast. He has made the charitable move of hiring his former “Late Night” staff for the tour and will give them the proceeds from the tour. He is taking no salary for himself and feels dearly for his out of work staff.
Indeed, Sarah Killen (@lovelybutton) was in for a ride. The wave of attention and popularity that O’Brien brought to this young girl in Michigan was Mustang Magazine | April 2010

Alice in Wonderland As in many other cases when a classic book is converted or interpreted into a movie format, the book is far better for any audience. That being said, let me confess to readers that I am a big fan of "Alice in Wonderland." This particular movie version of "Alice" is not Carroll's story, so viewers should not anticipate an accurate adaptation. If printed words on a page with an occasional artistic illustration are not your ideas of entertainment, then the movie's elaborate visual presentations, superb performances, and enchanting music should offer greater sensation delights. Rated PG 1 hour 48 min Fantasy / Romance
The main movie character, Alice Kingsleigh (a pitchperfect Mia Wasikowska), is an easily distracted 19year-old young lady who is somewhat out of place
in a rather conservative Victorian environment. She brushes off a marriage proposal from a man of social privilege and without a thought or care wistfully runs after a watch-clutching rabbit with the voice of Michael Sheen. The sequence fully utilizes the effects of the audience's 3-D glasses as Alice bumbles and tumbles into Underland. Unbeknownst to the fair damsel, it is not the first time she has plunged into this precise rabbit hole. Before Alice regains her "muchness," she will encounter and develop a relationship with the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp supplies another mysteriously enthralling character.), and she will clash with the irascible Iracebeth (Helena Bonham Carter, a believable and tyrannical queen). Anne Hathaway's portrayal of the White Queen demonstrates the character's quiet and fragile madness. The story's magnificent cast - from Tweedledee and Tweedledum (Matt Lucas) to the invisible Cheshire Cat (Stephen Fry) to the wild Jabberwocky
Twilight Saga New Moon Besides the threat of evil vampires, it seems that everything in the town of Forks has quieted down for Bella and Edward. That is until an accident causes Edward to rethink his relationship with Bella. Fearing that he is a danger to her, he decides to leave town to keep her safe. Through the rest of the movie Bella unsuccessfully tries to get on with life after Edward is gone. Along her journey to pick up the pieces of her life she stumbles across another secret. Rated PG-13 2 hours 10 min Fantasy / Romance
I found this movie to be below average, there wasn’t much that caught my attention to really draw me into the story like most movies. The plot itself was not very interactive and it really didn’t have a climax to it like most supernatural movies have, even though there were a few times I found subtle hints that made it seem like it would. I felt a little cheated that there were no fighting scenes until near the end of the movie and even then they were short lived and not very exciting. It was mostly all slow motion shots which felt a little overdone to me.

(Christopher Lee) - receive brilliant treatment courtesy of special effects provided by Ken Ralston. Some Carroll purists might criticize alterations to the script such as Alice's maturation, but the time factor adds a message of female realization and empowerment. The real focus of the new movie is the addition of a more eccentric landscape offered via the artistry and dazzling brilliance of the special effects in the landscape. It's a compliment to technology in moving forward to catch up with Burton's vivid imagination. Music by Danny Elfman further enhances the dreamy, magical and darker elements of the fantasy. Notable pieces throughout the soundtrack include "Alice Theme," "Down the Hole," "The Cheshire Cat," "Alice and Bayard's Journey," and "Into the Garden." My advice: Try to experience the new movie as revisiting a fun adventure but taking new paths for more fun.

smooth. They didn't seem out of place in the movie when they came up.
I also enjoyed interaction between some of the minor characters. It was those short scenes that made the movie feel like there were actually people with personalities in the movie, as opposed to the flat character of Bella. I felt like she was not there at all through most of the movie, granted that the plot called for her to be a bit unresponsive, but really she could have done a little more with her expressions.
The few things that I did enjoy were that the computer graphics looked really flawless and

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith
While Abraham Lincoln is widely lauded for saving a Union and freeing millions of slaves, his valiant fight against the forces of the undead has remained in the shadows for many years. That is, until Seth Grahame-Smith stumbled upon The Secret Journal of Abraham Lincoln, and became the first living person to lay eyes on it in more than 140 years.
Asterios Polyp by James Robinson
This is the triumphant return of one of comics’ greatest talents with an engrossing story of one man’s search for love, meaning, sanity, and perfect architectural proportions. An extraordinarily imagined world of brilliantly conceived eccentrics, sharply observed social mores, and deftly depicted asides on everything from design theory to the nature of humanity.
I Know Where I’m Going by Charlotte Chandler
Drawing on a series of recordings made over many years, beginning in the mid-1970s, acclaimed biographer Charlotte Chandler has written the most intimate and personal biography ever published of Hollywood legend Katharine Hepburn. I Know Where I'm Going is a fascinating, delightful, and personal book that brings readers as close as possible to the real Katharine Hepburn.
