SOLDIER’SBlog
“...having an explosive device blow up in my face and realizing what its intent was.”
Every day we see new people. We come to class and sit in seats filled with faces we have never seen before, but - ironically - we live in a world where we feel like strangers amongst each other.Yet, we all share some of the same struggles and dreams and often we want to achieve some of the same goals. We all have different opinions about the U.S. Armed Forces, whether it was from personal experience or peer influence, but most would agree that our Armed Forces are essential to our way of life in the United States. From personal experiences as a skeptic and an enlisted soldier, I believe that volunteering for military duty was one of the best decisions I made in my life. I am not shy about sharing my experiences with anyone who asks. I should note that I’m not recruiting anyone, nor am I trying to force a position onto your beliefs. But, in keeping with my thesis for my blog, I’d like to introduce someone I know, a Marine always, and a good friend of mine, Joe Duenas. At 23 years old, Joe served four years as an infantryman in the U.S. Marine Corps and now attends TSTC with aspirations to gain a master's degree in physics. He works as a personal trainer at one of Harlingen’s gyms, Max Fitness, and he had positive things to say about his experiences and his future goals since being discharged from the service. “Being in the Marines taught me how to appreciate life in a new way because of the valuable lessons the service taught me,” he said. When asked about what his most memorable experience was, he replied,
“having an explosive device blow up in my face and realizing what its intent was.” Joe remains humble and his path toward success remains undeterred.
In closing my conversation with Joe, my last question to him involved his future plans. With a smile he replied, “I plan on taking life one day at a time and living each moment of it.”
One note I would like to add is that a person does not need to be in the military to serve his or her country. We’re all focused on a common goal to graduate en route toward our career of choice and with those skills we can make positive differences on behalf of our nation.

Bossypants by Tina Fey
Tina Fey’s new book Bossypants is short, messy, and impossibly funny (an apt description of the comedian herself). From her humble roots growing up in Pennsylvania to her days doing amateur improv in Chicago to her early sketches on "Saturday Night Life," Fey gives us a fascinating glimpse behind the curtain of modern comedy with equal doses of wit, candor and self-deprecation. Some of the funniest chapters feature the differences between male and female comedy writers ("men urinate in cups"), her cruise ship honeymoon ("it’s very Poseidon Adventure"), and advice about breast feeding ("I had an obligation to my child to pretend to try").
But the chaos of Fey’s life is best detailed when she’s dividing her efforts equally between rehearsing her Sarah Palin impression, trying to get Oprah to appear on "30 Rock," and planning her daughter’s Peter Pan-theme birthday. Bossypants gets to the heart of why Tina Fey remains universally adored: she embodies the hectic, too-many-things-to-juggle lifestyle we all have, but instead of complaining about it, she can laugh it off.
The Bone House by Brian Freeman
Hilary and Mark Bradley are trapped in a web of suspicion. Last year, accusations of a torrid affair with a student cost Mark his teaching job and made the young couple into outcasts in their remote island town off the Lake Michigan coast. Now, a teenage girl is found dead on a deserted beach and, once again, Mark faces a hostile town convinced of his guilt.
Hilary Bradley is determined to prove that Mark is innocent, but she’s on a lonely, dangerous quest. Even when she discovers that the murdered girl was witness to a horrific crime years earlier, the police are certain she’s throwing up a smoke screen to protect her husband. Only a quirky detective named Cab Bolton seems willing to believe Hilary’s story. Hilary and Cab soon find that people in this community are willing to kill to keep their secrets hidden - and to make sure Mark does not get away with murder. With each shocking revelation, even Hilary begins to wonder whether her husband is innocent. Freeman’s first stand-alone thriller since his "Stride" novels is a knockout.
I Walk Alone
by Mary Higgins Clark
In I Walk Alone, Alexandra “Zan” Moreland, a gifted, beautiful interior designer on the threshold of a successful Manhattan career, is terrified to discover that somebody is not only using her credit cards and manipulating her financial accounts to bankrupt her and destroy her reputation, but may also be impersonating her in a scheme that may involve the much more brutal crimes of kidnapping and murder.
Zan already is haunted by the disappearance of her son, Matthew, kidnapped in broad daylight two years ago in Central Park - a tragedy that has left her torn between hope and despair. Now, on what would be Matthew’s fifth birthday, photos surface that seem to show Zan kidnapping her own child, followed by a chain of events that suggests somebody - but who? Zan asks herself desperately, and why?- has someone stolen her identity.

Green Lantern by: Christopher Brailsford
,
No evil shall escape my sight Summary » Director
Martin Campbell » Starring Ryan Reynolds Blake Lively Peter Saarsgard Mark Strong » Release Date 17 June 2010 » Parental Rating PG
Green Lantern tells the story of Hal Jordan (Ryan Reynolds), a reckless aviator pilot, who is given a magical ring by a dying alien named Abin Sur. The ring allows Hal to create objects from his imagination through the use of sheer willpower. It also makes him the first human to be included in the Green Lantern Corps, a group of beings from all across the galaxy who are tasked with patrolling and protect certain areas of the universe. The Lanterns fight against foes such as Hector Hammond, played by Peter Saarsgard, and a yellow creature made of pure fear named Parallax. Hal Jordan must overcome his fears and doubts to take on the responsibility given to him in order to save the world.
The movie is directed by Martin Campbell, who is known widely for his action films. His takes on the James Bond franchise are said to have revitalized and renewed the series, both with Goldeneye, and then again with the relaunch in Casino Royale. Campbell also directed The Mask of Zorro and The Legend of Zorro, launching Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones into international limelight. Actor Ryan Reynolds, on the other hand, has starred in a variety of movies, in drama pieces ranging from Amityville Horror and Buried, to comedy and romance in Just Friends and The Proposal. However, his role as Hal Jordan is not his first time doing comic book related material, as he has starred in Blade:Trinity and X-Men Origins: Wolverine prior.

Tidbit of Information
The movie is based off of a long running comic character created by All-American Publications in 1940. (All-American was one of three companies that eventually merged into DC Comics) Alan Scott, the original Green Lantern, actually derived his powers from magic instead of an alien energy source.
The ring gets recharged through small lanterns called "power batteries", which in turn are charged from a much larger lantern on the planet Oa, the Green Lantern headquarters.
Since Hal Jordan, there have been several other humans inducted into the Green Lantern Corps, including Guy Gardner, Kyle Rainer and John Stewart.
Green Lantern’s Light! Conclusion
Planets seen in the movie are alien, there is an incredible amount of CGI going into the process. This includes Hal Jordan's costume, which, in the movie, is constructed over his body by the ring itself. This, coupled with 3D cameras, will be a turning point in superhero films. Green Lantern is being widely released June 17th, both in 2D and 3D.

OUT OF
I stumbled upon this in an old Nintendo Power magazine and read the description; plus, I heard a lot of good reviews about this game. So, I decided to try it out and review "Hotel Dusk: Room 215" for the Nintendo DS. The game starts with the game telling you to hold the DS vertically like holding a book. The game provides the player with a prologue of the incidents about the main character that leads the player to check in at Hotel Dusk. You - as the player - will talk with Dunning Smith, the owner of Hotel Dusk, in a conversation that allows you to choose between two responses. You will have to choose an answer to continue with the game. The questions and answer selections help you expand the story, gain clues for solving puzzles and other functions to continue the game.
The game is set throughout an evening marked by "chapters" that allow you to meet a cast of characters during your stay at the hotel. You meet a former pickpocket, a famous writer, an elderly woman, a troubled teenager, a doctor and his daughter, a model, a mysterious girl, and the maid. These characters are all woven into the main plot as you search for your former partner, Brian Bradley.
The way the game got my attention is the way the puzzles involved your DS because you have to explore and search for items to solve a particular puzzle. For example, in one puzzle you have to open your suitcase by getting and unfolding a wire hanger to pick the lock using your stylus because you broke your suitcase key. In another situation, the player must tilt the DS screen toward light in the room that you’re in to reveal a hidden number that goes into a machine. You can also write in the game notebook to help you remember certain key items. At the end of each chapter you have to answer questions that occur within the game to receive a summary of the events that happen in each level.
Just because you’re a former detective does not mean you cannot receive a "Game Over" screen as the result of your actions such as choosing wrong responses, holding certain items, snooping around, or knowing too much. You could be kicked out or sent back to your room. But, overall the game is great because it features an in-depth story with twists and the characters' interaction make it great. The soundtrack fits the style or atmosphere of a mystery movie and the way the DS is used in the game. If you enjoy mystery and love puzzle games this game is for you.

New Zealand, the home to Bret and Jemaine from “Flight of the Conchords,” is also home to the world’s largest and only flightless parrot, the kakapo. Kakapo translates to “night parrot” in Maori, the language of the indigenous people of New Zealand. The kakapo also is referred to as the “owl parrot.”
As both names suggest, the kakapo is nocturnal and, indeed, a walker of the night. It has been said the kakapos have a pleasant and powerful odor described as smelling musky in nature. With mossy green plumage and yellow-green feathers on its underside, camouflage is the kakapo’s main form of defense. When a kakapo feels threatened it will freeze in an attempt to visually blend in with foliage. The “stand still and hope for the best” method does not always yield the anticipated results. This makes the kakapo accessible to conservationists, as well as predators.
Ka k apo
Once common throughout New Zealand the kakapo had few predators until the arrival of Polynesian people thousands of years ago, the arrival of Europeans in the 1800s, and ultimately the arrival of Europeans’ pets and livestock. Among these pets and livestock were predators to the kakapo. The predators killed the birds and people discovered the birds could provide a plump, tasty dish.
The kakapo population suffered massive decline. They went from hundreds and thousands of birds to a mere handful. In 1995 only 51 kakapos remained, which led to a project designed to promote kakapo breeding and survival. To protect the kakapo, they were moved to Whenua Hou (Codfish Island) and Maud Island, both free of predators.

Mustang Magazine | May 2011
The Department of Conservation hoped these island sanctuaries would increased kakapo mating and result in a rising number of kakapo babies! Kakapos are not prolific breeders; they mate only once every few years when certain trees such as the rimu and the kahikatea fruit heavily. Kakapos require plenty of food to “get in the mood.” Staples of kakapo cuisine include walnuts, pumpkin seeds and apples. They like a large quantity of native plants, pollens, fruits, and seeds on the menu in to fuel their mating energy. To attract a female, a male kakapo will leave his abode for hilltops and ridges up to four miles away. A mating “arena” is set for each male when he believes he has established the best possible courting area. Conflicts arise between individual males, however, when they seek to control a contested arena or “court.” Each arena or court is approximately 160 feet apart, but males still consider the boundaries as part of their mating arena. Fights break out over territory.
Male kakapos move into battle with feathers erect, wings fanned out, claws at the ready, and much boisterous screeching! The clashes often result in bloodshed until there is a victor and sometimes the violence ends in a fatality.
Victorious kakapos construct a honeymoon suite. They dig a bowl shape into the ground and scratch a set of tracks that lead to the bowl. These bowls are usually dug next to rock formations, earthen banks, or tree trunks to help reflect the sound or “boom” of the kakapo mating call. Even the bowl in the ground serves as an amplifier. By inflating a thoracic sac males make loud, low- frequency (100 Hz) booming calls from their bowls.
Although much effort is put into attracting a mate, the relationship is consummated in only 10 seconds. Afterward, the male kakapo resumes “booming” to attract more females. Many of his calls may go unanswered. This leads to severe frustration for the male and drives the male kakapo to perform “the act” with other species (dead or alive) or objects (pretty much anything). It is not unusual for the kakapo to perform “the act” upon a conservationist. The kakapo was one of the endangered species Douglas Adams and Mark Carwardine set out to find for the radio series and book Last Chance to See. Almost 20 years later, in 2009, an updated version of the series was produced in which Stephen Fry and Carwardine revisited the endangered animals. In January 2009, they spent time filming kakapo on Codfish Island and met a kakapo they named Sirocco. Sirocco became fond of Mark, which led to the YouTube hit about their encounter. Preservation of this rare bird makes the species popular with the media. Although the kakapo remains on the endangered species list, there is evidence that conservation efforts are succeeding in preserving this remarkable bird.

MOVIE REVIEW It appears that every year there are two or three action films that get released to theaters in which the traditional male hero gets substituted with a female. There is nothing wrong with this move, in my opinion, as long as it makes a good story. Unfortunately, these movies tend to be excessively violent, hyper-sexualized, or a combination of both to the point where it feels insulting to the audience in general. Do writer Seth Lochhead and director Joe Writer take "Hanna" down the same road or somewhere else?
The story starts and ends with Hanna Heller (Saoirse Ronan), a teenager who has lived her whole life in a Finnish forest with her father, the mysterious Erik Heller (Eric Bana), isolated from the outside world. Under the mantra of "Adapt or Die," Heller as trained Hanna to survive life-or-death situations. When Hanna tells her father that she is ready to go to the outside world, she is given a box and is told that when she truly feels ready she should use it. The price for her experiencing the world she deeply desires is confronting Marissa Wiegler (Cate Blanchett), an unrelenting woman that won't stop until either one is dead.

8.5 10 OUT OF
The story of "Hanna" has more in common with "Pinocchio" than with, for example, "Salt," "Sucker Punch," or "Kick Ass." There are plenty of fairy-tale allusions throughout the movie and the Brothers Grimm works are referenced directly more than a couple of times. That is not to say that there isn't any action or thrills. The excellently choreographed fights of many types in the movie won't disappoint action-movie fans, but they don't overstay their welcome. There is plenty of character development and growth, especially in Ronan's character. The acting of Bana and Blanchett sell the audience on their humanity as opposed to the cardboard-cutouts these characters usually represent. While the same can't be said about the supporting cast, it doesn't matter. It's all about young, if slightly disturbing, Hanna.
It is not simple to separate the visuals of this work from its sound. Both of these elements are craftily intertwined and deeply integrated into the story. Individual tracks such as "Hanna's Theme," "Escape 700," and "The Devil Is In the Details" will transport you back to specific scenes long after you step out of the theater. The on-location scenes in the movie fill one up with the sense of wonder and alienation that Hanna experiences. At moments the visuals alone take the front of the stage and you can't help but feel in awe and consumed by what's on the screen.
If you are interested in a character-driven action film built on a fairy tale and encapsulated with a unique atmosphere, or if you've been waiting for a film that goes perfectly with "The Professional" or "La Femme Nikita," I cannot urge you enough to experience "Hanna." People looking for a well crafted story should accompany the people of the previous scene to the cineplex. And maybe pay for the popcorn.

INTERNET CHALLENGES Series Presents:
SaltiCHALLENGE ne&Bread So, as promised, I have for you lovely people another Internet challenge! If you don’t know what I am writing about, read my previous article in last month’s Mustang Magazine. If you’re too lazy to find it, here is the basic drift. The Internet is full of challenges that have been e-mailed around and sometimes posted on YouTube and such. Here, I explain such challenges for people who don’t have the capacity to find them themselves. So, for this month, I will explain the Saltine Challenge as well as the Bread Challenge.
Most people have, at some point in their lives, eaten a cracker. And, yes, they go good with cheese and salad and other food, but in this challenge crackers are the main course. Six crackers to be exact. Now, you may think, “Pssh! Six crackers? That’s nothing! I can eat six crackers!” The real challenge, however, is in the procedure. Eat six Saltine crackers . . . in 60 seconds . . . without any type of drink.
by Isaac Trevino
It might sound easy, but it is difficult because the crackers will make your mouth dry. As a witness, I have seen a person successfully chew and swallow the six crackers without benefit of a fluid to wash down the crackers four times out of 60 or so attempts. I, however, seem to always end up doing the latter. In other words, I have never succeeded. I have never succeeded in the Bread Challenge, either. It’s very similar in principle to the Saltine Challenge. The Bread Challenge also is difficult because it causes dryness in the consumer’s mouth. The procedure is: Take one slice of bread. In 45 seconds without any type of drink . . . try to chew and swallow.
Well, there you have it. I have provided two more challenges or feats for you lovely readers to try. Like I wrote before, this is a social challenge. Doing it alone is not as fun. GLHF!
