Advice
mentor Ally men•tor /ˈmɛntɔr, -tər/
A mentor is an ear to listen, an eye to see, and a hand to lead the way.
When someone thinks of a mentor, they may draw an image of the Big Brother/Big Sister program or perhaps the old apprenticeship programs for those pursuing a trade. On a college campus, one may believe that only students who are doing poorly in class need a mentor, but this is far from true.
In sports, the versatile athlete is the one who can play several sports and excel. In a band, the versatile musician is the one who can switch from one instrument to another seamlessly. At TSTC, Peer Mentors are just as versatile. Because student needs vary, Peer Mentors can help in different ways.
The fact is anyone can benefit from having a mentor in their corner, from the student on academic probation to the one who was just earned a place on the President’s Honor Roll. You may wonder why, when you hold an A average, would you “need” a mentor. Mentors can be a benefit to anyone for this simple reason: versatility.
The Office of Student Success Peer Mentoring Program has Mentors who can help you! Whether the problem has to do with life on or off campus, finances or academics, mentors can be counted on to point their students in the right direction.

BAKE-OFF
Thirty-four students matched recipes and food preparation techniques for the Summer 2010 Culinary Bake-off sponsored by the Culinary Arts Program.
CA major Steve Liserio captured first place with a Chocolate Hazelnut Rocher Cake. He combined elements and ingredients from a couple of recipes to mix the winning dessert. "Things were a bit crowded and tight in the kitchen as we all got ready, but it was a great experience," said Liserio, who would like to become an executive chef in Austin or Dallas.
Fourth-place finisher Alexandra Gonzalez said the event was her first baking competition. "I want to be a baker and I learned a lot from this competition. It liked the experience, the challenge, and the critiques - it all really helps me grow," she explained.
Joel Espinosa did not place with a Strawberry Creme Brulee, but he said the event provided a learning experience. "I am not a baker, but this competition opened my mind to the world of baking," he said. "This is the second time I have done this creme brulee. It's not the best out there, but now I don't want to stop until I perfect it."
Judges included TSTC alumnus Rudy Pi単a, a 2003 Culinary Arts graduate, who works at Solara Hospital; Julieta Brise単o, a 2009 CA graduate, who works at Golden Palms Nursing Home, and Steve Smedbron of H-E-B Cooking Connections in Sharyland. Smedbron graduated from the Art Institute of Houston and said that he has been very pleased with the quality of work done by the TSTC graduates he hires.

TECH NEWS FROM A GEEK

Rumors on the Net: New Google Social Network “Google Me” Google is rumored to dish out a Facebook competitor allegedly called “Google Me.” The rumor was first leaked by Digg.com Founder and CEO Kevin Rose in a tweet that read:
“Ok, umm, huge rumor: Google to launch Facebook competitor very soon ‘Google Me,’ very credible source.” - @kevinrose
Soon thereafter, the tweet was taken down and on the Internet this only feeds the flames about possible credibility. Some time later an exFacebook executive, Adam D’Angelo, stood behind Kevin’s rumor and said, “This is a real project. There are a large number of people working on it. I am completely confident about

Make Money? …on the Internet?
Yes, it’s true. Youtube announced a program that will award its top independent video bloggers, or vloggers, grants varying in the tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars. In total, Youtube plans to give away $5 million to boost production values of the content providers, which are often low quality. Manager of Partner Development at Youtube George Strompolos sees the grants as an “important investment to make in the future of our original content partners.” Strompolos announced the program at Vidcon, which is the first Youtube conference, put together by the community itself. It had a turn out of more than 1,000 users.
“They’ve invested in us for years by creating content. And now it’s our turn to invest in them.” –George Strompolos
Youtube has created a scenario where everyone wins here. The vloggers gain funding to use as they wish whether for equipment, a new project or hiring actors. It can be a great help for these viral pioneers. On the side of Youtube this is another chance for great content to be created that gains more traction and views, which in turn generates more eyes on their site, which means more advertising dollars. Those of the top Youtube vloggers twho are invited to apply for these grants will be chosen based on their marketing, ideas, track record and other criteria. Should this program take off and generate the sort of numbers that Youtube likes then the program can be taken to a wider spectrum of Youtube users.
this.” D’Angelo points out that Google is putting a lot more into it as a “high-quality project,” and a reaction to the fact that Facebook’s growth has not slowed as Google anticipated. Although it seems like Facebook cannot be overshadowed right now, this is Google we’re writing about. They would be the ones, if anyone, to have the power and resources to shake an industry leader like Facebook. Then again, Google was not so triumphant when it attempted to take some of the market from Twitter with its introduction of Google Buzz. Google Wave also flopped before Buzz and both were held in high regard when launched by Google. This could really go either way and we’ll have to wait and see. Recently TechCrunch reported that Google also invested between $100 million and $200 million into the online social gaming tycoon Zynga. Zynga
is the producer of such hit social games as “Farmville” and “Mafia Wars.” I am sure you have seen these titles in your Facebook request inbox. Speculation is that Google is planning a social gaming platform called Google Games that in turn could be fused into the new Google Me social network experience. Truth be told, there are plenty of rumors and speculation surrounding the alleged projects in such early stages. Google is not commenting on any of the matters and keeping it pretty hushhush. No release date or leaked interface concepts yet, but I’m sure the Internet will deliver soon. Google will have to up the ante on the design side of this new project because as before the functionality is present, but lacking in visual appeal.

Dead Rising 2
Do you enjoy slaying zombies? Are you a fan of George A. Romero? Well this upcoming title will keep you alive! Or will it? Capcom’s “Dead Rising” was a popular zombie survival horror hit in 2006. The story revolved around a photojournalist who was trying to uncover the truth about the zombie epidemic while still trying defend against attacks and rescue survivors. While it was an interesting perspective, the only setback was the time limit. “Dead Rising 2” takes place five years after the Santa Cabeza incident in “Dead Rising 1”, which had multiple endings depending on how you finished the three-day mission. This time, Dead Rising 2 puts you in the heart of Fortune City that was modeled after the gambling and nightlife of Las Vegas. That’s right folks! You get to gamble with the undead and steal their chips and become rich while slaying them as you proceed with your missions. In this game you play the protagonist by the name of Chuck Greene and his mission is to save his daughter, Katie. In the storyline, Katie has become infected but has yet to turn into a zombie. Chuck is running through Fortune City to find Zombrex, a cure for the infection, while having to choose between right and wrong. Remember, just like in DR1, the choices you make in this game will cause your path to develop! Not only will you have to save your daughter but defend yourself from attackers who believe you have caused the zombie outbreak. The 72-hour time limit has returned, but this time players will have to stop every 24 hours to feed Katie more medicine. This was intended help players keep track of their time limit. But for the main story's sake, Chuck 18

needs to get out of the city in 72 hours! Are you up to it and think you can survive that long? Now running around the city and slaying zombies with your bare hands isn’t going to be as easy as it looks. This is when DR2 brings in the new feature of customizing weapons! You now have the ability to cut up and kill zombies with a chainsaw if you want to! Thanks to the combat system players can create absurd weapons. DR2 also injects its own weird sense of humor by adding crazy new weapons and having zombies react to them in humorous ways. There are a number of places in the game where you can go in and sit on a workbench to create weapon combinations. Anything with a wrench icon on it can combined but you don't know what it can joined with until you get back to a workshop to test out the items. There are a lot of weapons out there and it’s up to you to be creative to save the world! Being the only player trying to save the world can take a lot of work so there’s a new Co-op feature where a friend can jump in to help you save the city! The story only progresses for the host so if the host is ahead of the guest, the guest will return to his or her own game with his or her own story progression. However, the guest can jump into the host's game with his own equipment and Prestige points. He can then return to his or her own un-progressed game with any new things that he or she found or earned in the host’s game. DR2 is set to be released on September 28 for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. You think you’re ready to take on zombies along with your sidekick? Get ready to gamble and slaughter!

New LRC Releases!
A Chance In Hell by Jim Michaels
This is a riveting account of how one brigade turned Iraq's most violent city into a model of stability. Together, the Americans and Sattar's growing band of fighters drove alQaeda from Ramadi. “A Chance in Hell” is a compelling tale of combat leadership and how a handful of men turned the tide of war at a time when it seemed hopeless.
Between a Heart and a Rock Place: A Memoir Bodily Harm by Pat Benatar with Patsi Bale Cox by Robert Dugoni One of the best-selling female rock stars of all time, the incomparable Pat Benatar writes about her life, rock 'n' roll, and how her generation changed music forever. The first solo female rocker ever to appear on MTV, Benatar writes with the same edge and attitude that was a hallmark of her music—from "Heartbreaker" to "Hit Me with Your Best Shot."
Bodily Harm opens with a big win for David Sloane and his new partner, Tom Pendergrass, in a malpractice case centered on the death of a young child. To get to the bottom of it all and find justice for the families harmed, Sloane must keep in check his overwhelming desire for revenge.
All you need at the LRC to borrow a book is a valid TSTC student ID. For more information, visit www.harlingen.tstc.edu/library.
