Hello Mustangs! A L ETTER FRO M YO U R S G A PR E S I D E N T

Hey Mustangs I hope you enjoyed your summer, because fall is here! (Even though we don’t see much of a change in Harlingen.) SGA is preparing for all of our fall events! We will be kicking off the month with Club Olympics on November 1st through the 3rd , so be sure to sign up and get your clubs ready to dominate! We have two SGA Meetings from 12pm to 1pm in the LRC Orientation Room on the November 8 and 29 where we will be giving out free lunch! In case you’ve been wanting to take that special someone out but don’t have the moolah to do it, don’t worry, SGA is here to help you out! We’ve got Movie on the Lawn on the November 15 at

7:30pm at the Athletic Field where you can come out and enjoy a free movie and popcorn! We will be ending the month with Cram Fest on the November 30 in the Student Center. Come by and get the essentials for studying like coffee, pencils, highlighters, scantrons, and snacks for free to help you get ready for finals!

Other than planning and putting on these fun-filled events for you all, SGA plays important roles on committees here on campus. I hold a seat at the President’s Council Meetings that our President of TSTC holds once a month. All our SGA officers and six appointed students are a part of a new committee on campus, Cafeteria Advisory Committee, where we give a student’s point of view on how to improve our cafeteria. If you have any concerns, suggestions, questions, or need information please stop by the SGA Office in the Student Center, Room 122, or contact us at 956.364.4343. Thank you! Have a great month! Sincerely,

Ruth Treviño

SUPPORT SERVICES

There is no excuse for abuse. You deserve to be loved. The slogans and advice gathered October 5 during the Clothesline Project on campus increased public awareness about family violence and the clothesline stood on display in the TSTC Cultural Arts Center during the Candlelight Vigil, a special tribute to 2010 victims, held on October 6.

A series of banners with headlines from local newspapers about family conflicts that ended with murders lined the room and several speakers summarized the beatings, stabbings, shootings and strangulations that claimed lives.

“Everything you do as a parent, you’re teaching your children. We, as parents, set the foundation for what our children are going to be whether it involves love, laughter, cooperation, success … or arguments and fights,” he said.

Judge David Sanchez, who presides over District Court 444 in Brownsville, described some of the domestic violence cases that he reviews. Many of the crimes involve a series of incidents that extend across generations.

The Family Crisis Center, TSTC Support Services Office and TSTC Counseling Services sponsored the event. The Web site for the Family Crisis Center is www.familycrisisctr.org and the hotline is 866.423.9304.

Attention Students on Probation!

Please make sure that you "Aim for A's and nothing less than C's" this semester to avoid scholastic and/or financial aid suspension.

We have many programs and services that can help you succeed including tutoring, mentoring, and referrals to on-campus resources as well as resources off campus. Check out the links below for more information.

Scholastic policies dictate that students on probation who fail to earn a 2.0 term GPA or above this semester will be unable to register at TSTC for one semester. Keep in mind that different policies apply to Financial Aid, so we recommend you also talk to a Financial Aid representative to determine how your financial aid eligibility may be affected.

AUB major Claudia Carr carries on a family tradition and challenges herself to reach higher goals. Interview by Dave Ralph. Photo by Freddy Rodriguez

Mustang Magazine | Nov/Dec 2011

How did you decide to pursue a career field traditionally dominated by men and work that many people view as rather dirty and gritty? Careers within the automotive industry are a tradition in my family. I grew up in the car industry due to my father’s interests. My father and I liked to do mechanical work, body work and car refinishing. A major plus was that I like to show men that a girl could do the work just as well. I do not like to be judged on the assumption that because I am female I should have limited expectations. My parents always like to show off my techniques and surprise people. What do you tell people who express surprise when they learn about your AUB training and career plans? I usually say, “What’s wrong with it? Women need to show men that we can do it, too!” Some people do not get over the surprise, but others want to know exactly what I do and I explain it to them.

most active club member for 20102011 with Donald Wilt as club advisor. I earned a national bronze medal in SkillsUSA. I am a nontraditional student ambassador for the Support Services Offices with Anna Cortez as the advisor. I am active in the Student Government Association, I am a silver certified leader in the “Learning to Lead” program, and I am a recurring graduate from the mini-institute for critical thinking. I always like to set example for my colleagues or simply become a leader who takes positive paths that benefit others. How do you schedule and balance the time you spend on your college education, business interests and family life? My answer is always multi-task and support! Support is the most important. The club officers and advisors help me out this semester and it makes my tasks go smoother as club president. My employer, Dr. Zamir, allows me to adjust my schedule and gives me encouragement. My husband, Tony, helps me because he’s a club officer and supports me in everything I do, including household and family responsibilities while I work. If a person multi-tasks, sets goals and has support, he or she can become a great achiever.

What are your leadership roles in AUB, SkillsUSA, Support Services Office and other organizations? Why did you step up to become a leader and what are the benefits of extra-curricular involvement?

What are your plans or goals after you graduate?

I am president for Auto Body SkillsUSA (AUB) and I received the Student of the Year Award for 20102011 at TSTC. I also was named the

I want to become an estimator or an adjustor in the auto-collision industry. My husband and I might open our own shop in the future.

What are your hobbies or forms of relaxation? I like to listen to country music while I work on cars. I like racing, mud bogging, mechanics, and doing body work. Cars are my passion and marriage gave me the last name of “Carr.” It’s easy to say that my life revolves around cars. What words of wisdom do you have for high school students considering higher education or for students new to the college experience? I have great respect for Jose Vargas, chairman of the AUB program. He once told me, “If it is to be, it is up to me.” That’s exactly what I would tell high school students or new college students. I have paid close attention to the saying and learned it’s true. I have taken on many challenges in life to test my skills or abilities and I always go back to that slogan. Besides the auto industry, I have experience as an accountant, notary, bookkeeper, tax advisor and preparer, medical office management and more. I believe every individual should be willing to explore. And ladies, you can do more than you realize. Show the world what you can do!

Valley Metro Charts Los Fresnos Bus Route By Dave Ralph

An increase in public transit riders to Texas State Technical College on existing public bus connections encouraged Valley Metro to schedule a new route that will link TSTC students to Los Fresnos and Brownsville. Several agencies and government groups provided input that led to the creation of Route 45 which is scheduled to open January 2, 2012 to begin spring semester.TSTC and the University of Texas at Brownsville will be the two locations at the west and east ends of the route. In between, there will be stops at the Valley Transit Co. station in Harlingen, San Benito City Hall, Los Fresnos City Hall, Los Fresnos Memorial Park, the Brownsville Multimodal Terminal and UTB. Rodney Gomez, program administrator for Valley Metro, told TSTC students at a meeting on campus October 12 that the original goal for Route 45 was to provide

public transportationto Los Fresnos High School students and graduates to higher education and employment in Brownsville and Harlingen. The buses will roll 4,290 hours per year from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays; a Saturday schedule is possible if there’s rider demand. Signs with schedule information will be posted at the route pickup and drop-off sites. “The idle time at each stop is minimal because of the schedule timing,” Valley Metro Director Tom Logan said.“Riders should be at the pickup point a few minutes early because the drivers cannot wait very long to stay on a schedule that all passengers expect.” Special reservations for pickups and drop-offs within one-half mile of the route may be made if riders phone 800.574.8322 a day in advance. Route 45 also should reach lowincome and elderly riders, Logan said. Students with proper identification cards ride at half price, only 75 cents one way.Tickets for elderly, disabled, military veterans and Medicare passengers also are half price. A package of 20-ride tickets is $10 for riders in these categories. Adult regular fare is $1.50 or $20 for 20 rides. Mustang Magazine | Nov/Dec 2011

Tickets are sold at the TSTC Bookstore and Valley Metro plans to make ticket purchases available at the Los Fresnos City Hall and at Los Fresnos High School. Children under 7 accompanied by an adult ride free. Riders should pay drivers with the exact fare because drivers do not carry change. The buses are equipped with lifts for wheelchairs and racks for up to two bicycles. The public transit system operates bus routes with TSTC connections that go through San Benito, La Feria, Santa Rosa and Primera.Wall maps at TSTC are located next to the Student Life Office in the Student Center and at the Housing Office. Route maps are at kiosks or boxes in several buildings. Many building secretaries and the Student Government Association also provide information about Valley Metro. Valley Metro is part of the Lower Rio Grande Valley Development Council. Questions or comments may be directed to Gomez and Logan by calling 956.969.5761 or sending e-mail to ValleyMetroRGV@gmail.com, rgomez@lrgvdctransit.org or tlogan@lrgvdctransit.org.

New LRC Releases CH E CK TH EM O UT TO DAY !

The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks

In the fall of 1984, high school students Amanda Collier and Dawson Cole fell deeply, irrevocably in love. Though they were from opposite sides of the tracks, their love for one another seemed to defy the realities of life in the small town of Oriental, North Carolina. But as the summer of their senior year came to a close, unforeseen events would tear the young couple apart, setting them on radically divergent paths.

Down These Strange Streets

by George R. R. Martin, Gardner Dozois (editor)

In this all-new collection of urban fantasy stories, editors George R.R. Martin and Gardner Dozois explore the places where mystery waits at the end of every alley and where the things that go bump in the night have something to fear...

Includes stories by New York Times bestselling authors Charlaine Harris, Patricia Briggs, Diana Gabaldon, Simon R. Green, S. M. Stirling, and Carrie Vaughn, as well as tales by Glen Cook, Bradley Denton, M.L.N. Hanover, Conn Iggulden, Laurie R. King, Joe R. Lansdale, John Maddox Roberts, Steven Saylor, Melinda Snodgrass, and Lisa Tuttle.

My family is growing and expanding all the time. We’re blessed with marriages and grandbabies, and so sharing these recipes for honest, down-home dishes feels like passing a generation’s worth of stovetop secrets on to my family, and yours.
