Hey there, Mustangs! A L ETTER FRO M YO U R S G A PR E S I D E N T

SOLDIER’SBlog Jonathan Quezada jequezada@mymail.tstc.edu Veterans, fathers, and mothers all have one thing in common; there is no clear definition to fully explain what they do for their loved ones. As their special days for recognition appear on the calendar, everyone should take the time to show appreciation for their efforts, hard work, and countless hours of dedication. On Memorial Day, May 30, 2011, our nation remembered military men and women who devoted themselves to service and paid the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms. Some of us know what it’s like to lose someone we love in the line of military duty and their memory will endure forever. Their lives and visions do not hide in the depths of our soul; our minds will replay the countless experiences and gifts that were shared. These heroes are eternally engraved in our hearts.

As conflicts arise it’s a sad truth to know that lives will be lost but their cause will not be in vain, nor will these unselfish acts be forgotten.Valiant service is a trait that all military members share whether they are airmen, marines, sailors, or soldiers. And with that I would like to express my gratitude to anyone who has worn a military uniform to serve our nation. Your story will never be forgotten, it will only be retold. “A veteran is someone who, at one point in his/her life, wrote a blank check made payable to ‘The United States of America,’ for an amount of ‘up to and including my life.’ ” Anonymous

STUDENT FEATURE

Narciso Zapata Education & Training

Narciso Zapata is a father, a full-time student, a squad leader in the Army National Guard, and Mr. TSTC 2011. We caught up with him during his busy schedule to ask him about how he manages to keep it all in balance. Interview by Laura Amaro, DMDT Why did you choose Education & Training? I’ve always wanted to give something back to the community, and a career in education is the perfect opportunity to give back. What sort of jobs can an ET student look forward to? Most ET students aim to become a teacher and with their degree they can obtain a position within public and private schools, even IDEA and Montessori schools. A degree in ET can open a lot of doors for you. What is your favorite class and why? It’s difficult to choose just one class. They’ve all been great and I’ve enjoyed myself so much in my classes. This program has allowed me to expand my creativity and enhanced my public speaking skills. I’ve met and networked with many wonderful classmates. 12

How long have you been in school? I started school in fall 2004 but have been attending on and off due to my service in the military. I’m in the Army National Guard reserves and have been for 12 and a half years. What are your plans after graduation? The first item on my agenda is to take a vacation. My goal is to become an ROTC instructor, so I’m considering pursuing a bachelor’s degree after graduating from TSTC. How has attending school worked with your personal schedule? I have two daughters and I have shared custody of them so my schedule is different from most students. With most ET students being parents with full-time jobs, our classes are offered at a variety of times so that we can combine our class schedules into our daily routines. For example, when I was training for the Mr. TSTC Scholarship

Mustang Magazine | July 2011

I highly recommend students to get involved in student life because it’s a great way to have some fun while you’re at college. Competition, 80 percent of our rehearsals were scheduled during my evening class with Ms. Galloway. However, she really worked with me when it came to turning in my assignments. She is a prime example of how the instructors in the ET program are willing to help you achieve your goals at TSTC. So you have a very busy schedule. How do you manage to make it all work out? [laughs] I don’t sleep. I haven’t finished watching a movie in a long time. I make a habit of listing to prioritize my work. It’s also about making sure you include a little bit of down time so that you don’t stress yourself out. I like to just slow down a bit by having a nice barbecue with my family. I love comedy movies like “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Old School.” Just remember to never give up and look at the bright side to make the best of everything. Even with my busy schedule, I don’t feel like I've missed out on anything. My title as Mr. TSTC has helped bring out my youth while I’m enjoying TSTC. I highly recommend students to get involved in student life because it’s a great way to have some fun while you’re at college. Any last message you’d like to give to students? No matter what path you choose here at TSTC, I guarantee you can have a fun and wonderful experience. Mustang Magazine | July 2011

RHYME VERSE RAMIRO RODRIGUEZ ICED

Iced the grass where I lie down, the soil where I will sleep with no sun. My tongue stands still: the cold weather brings an unsaid whisper as I think of no one with a face.

HELADO

Helado el césped en el que me acuesto, la tierra donde dormiré sin sol. Mi lengua permanece quieta: el tiempo frío trae un murmullo no dicho mientras pienso en nadie con rostro

EZRA POUND

I read what I read, words stuck on the pages as I hold a book of this wonderfully complex fellow.

Midnight passes me by on a blink, I stay awake, noises coming out of the shelves, unanswered whispers, insects flying away to hide behind the doors.

As I read The Cantos, I hear what I hear, many pages remind me of what you were back then: a single word with many connotations.
