I
Dr. Cesar Maldonado - TSTC President am often asked by students about career choices and job opportunities in emerging technologies. My response is invariably that this is a great time to be in college.
As students in an era of accelerating technological innovation, you will see the creation of many new disciplines that will result in exciting new career choices. You will have many selections to make regarding technical programs, academic courses and degree plans. But no matter which program you choose, your long term success will be based on life-long learning. What TSTC offers you is an environment to form a solid foundation for that life-long challenge. This comes not only in the form of quality education by dedicated faculty and staff but also from your participation in student and community activities.
W
At TSTC you can volunteer your time and talent to school and community service organizations that will bring you personal and professional growth. You can develop and strengthen skills that will be assets you can keep no matter what your career. Participating in student and other service organizations allows you to apply your classroom knowledge in a pubic setting; practicing your problem solving skills. Your involvement will not only enhance your team building experience but will benefit your fellow students and the community. Volunteering for student and community service will strengthen your connection to academics by illustrating how classroom lessons play out in a work environment.
Student Government will be hosting a luau on Thursday, June 11 to give the student body an opportunity to meet their Student Government officers. Everyone that stops by for some free cake and punch will be given a goodie bag. Also, come out and join one of the campus clubs on Wednesday, June 10.

For those of you that are new to our campus, I’d like to encourage you to participate in Student Government or join your program club. If there isn’t a club that catches your eye, feel free to start your own club on campus. Getting involved on campus is a great way to meet new people as well as fulfill your civic duty. Interested in becoming part of Student Government? Do you think you have what it takes to become an SGA officer? Elections take place at the beginning of the fall semester, so start participating in student events around campus, and the SGA meetings in order to ensure those votes. There has been a change in the location of the SGA meeting. For the this summer semester, SGA will be

Your suppor t for the TSTC community will be the cause. The effect will be improvement of the TSTC community’s environment, success for other students, and improved living conditions for community members. Most impor tantly the effect will be the growth of your personal por tfolio, including communication, integrity, compassion, and decision making — in shor t, growth in your leadership.
This spring two of your fellow students testified at a hearing of the Texas Legislature in support of a law to allow TSTC to add new degrees. They received no class credit and had to give of their own time for the benefit of future students at TSTC. by Hilda Prieto he Student Government Association hosted its first day of Club Olympics (50’s theme), which consisted of a few hours of fun and teamwork, April 14.
Day one of SGA Olympics began with a bubble gum blowing contest. The other two events were the hula-hoop competition and an exciting tug-of-war strength test. First place for blowing the largest bubble went to Sandie Vela of the Dental Explorers Club, which teamed up with the Teacher Assistant Club. What was her winning secret? She replied,“I’ve been practicing for this day since I was 5 years old.” Sarah Merrill from the CSMT Club became the hula-hoop champion. The adrenaline reached peak production for the tug-of-war struggle. After grueling

The Club Olympics continued April 15 by requiring team members to put on their thinking caps to advance and win the Brain Bowl. The team that correctly answered the most trivia questions moved on to another round. Three teams survived the initial rounds, but the Intramural/MGT Club prevailed with the top IQ or they were the luckiest guessers. Day three on April 16 brought the Root Beer Float Social as students sipped and chugged delicious root beer floats while socializing with other club members and listening to tunes from the 1950s. Late in the afternoon, clubs showed off their talents at the Club Olympics Talent Show at the Cultural Arts Center. Clubs were encouraged to dress for the occasion in ‘50s attire throughout the Olympics. SGA officers agreed that the events created a great opportunity for clubs to build leadership/communication skills by pairing them with other clubs. The activities brought people together with teamwork and generated new connections and friendships. “The Olympics was a great way for the clubs to rap up the spring semester and become more familiar with each other. It was great to see how much everyone knew about TSTC in the Brain Bowl,” SGA President Georgeann Calzada said.

The Super Huerta Bros.
T
wo of TSTC’s leading students designed a video game that grew in popularity to cause a major corporation like Microsoft to lift its eyebrows. Mario and Alberto Huerta are brothers in the Gaming & Simulation Program who created “Micro Invasion,” a game available via the Xbox Live Marketplace for the world to see.
I recently visited the Huerta brothers’ forums on RascalHaven.com and asked them about the experience. Both brothers do not precisely recall the very beginnings of this adventure, but they admit that it started as more of an innocent paint program where a gamer would simply paint lines with a
mouse pointer. The foundation was a product from a class assignment. Soon after it grew into a pointand-click shooting game, which then changed to include the use of an Xbox 360 controller. They later added the finishing touches of menus, high scores, music and sounds. The duo said that their first quarterly expected payout did not reach a fixed minimum. They see a contributing flaw from Microsoft’s lack of advertising, specifically toward the Xbox Live Community Games section. Mario remains optimistic. He said, “We’re just happy that the service is available for us to be able to make games available worldwide.”
by Lorenzo Garcia, DMDT
The brothers agreed that their main goal in completing the game was to gain experience and knowledge. What better way to learn than by doing, right? If you’re interested in finding more information about Micro Invasion or other works done by Mario and Alberto Huerta, visit their Web site at RascalHaven.com.
Community Garden Turned City Park
N
ational Make a Difference Day is a time for leaders to step up and give back to their communities. It star ted out as a neighborhood cleanup project, but after many discussions and meetings, Student Government officers knew that our amazing student leaders would be able to complete something more than just a cleanup. A decision was made to create a place for low-income housing residents to be proud of. It would be a place to jumpstar t their neighborhood beautification process as well as a place they could help us create. We decided to build them a community garden, not knowing it would turn into a city park!
The leaders that are outstanding in their very own clubs didn’t stop short of anything less than

excellence on this project.“Lead, follow or get out of the way” was the mentality for this creation. Our Building Construction Club stepped up and custommade 13 planter boxes that could fit at least eight plants each. The club, along with many other campus leaders, contributed over 500 volunteer hours to this project.
The project started at dawn — a totally empty lot ready to be created into a garden. Over 100 club and community leaders showed up to volunteer their services in planting, digging, and executing this huge project. As Student Government officers, we weren’t exactly sure what to expect throughout the day, but we were positive it would take a lot of communication, delegation, and leadership between everyone involved in a project of this magnitude.

For a first-time project, who knew it would be recognized by the City of Harlingen, the local newspaper and by prestigious donors such as Home Depot, Lowes and Wal-Mart? Looking back, our students reflected that a day out of our lives truly “made a difference” in the rest of the residents’ lives.

T
hough not an exact aficionado of the series, I do greatly appreciate the genre of sci-fi. To clear up a question many have had: no, you do not need to be familiar with the series to appreciate the movie. I was not, and I for one immensely enjoyed this movie.
This latest Star trek was directed by J.J. Abrams, who is most widely known for his series “Lost” as well as other projects like “Alias” and even the film “Cloverfield.” The movie takes place in Rated PG-13 2 hr 7 min an alternate time universe parallel to the series and other Star Sci-Fi / Action Trek feature films. There is a fun amount of time paradox with plenty of action on a grand scale, from fistfights to intergalactic space ship quarrels. The story is solid with little to no plot holes and very engaging. am going to be a strait shooter here and say that this movie did not live up to my expectations, though I have heard mixed buzz about “The Soloist.” Joe Wright, director of “Pride and Prejudice”, seemed to not have been on the same page as his director of photography. There seemed to be general feel that this artistic movie was trying to be made even more artistic. I will admit that the first 30 minute pull of the movie was riveting and left me with a frog in my throat, but story-wise, it seemed to plateau after that. The movie premise involves a writer who stumbles upon a music prodigy vagabond and what he learns as he tries to help

witter is the recent social media phenomenon that transcends the computer screen. In short, Twitter is an outlet which functions can be described with one question, “What are you doing?”
Yes, much like a status update on famous networks like Facebook and Myspace, Twitter capitalizes on the sole topic of what you are currently doing. This has been taken to the next level in that one could interact with Twitter through the use of a mobile device. Simply text in your current status to a short code Twitter provides and your time line is updated. As with other electronic social networks, the system of other users “friend you” or you “friend others” has been implemented in the manner of “following.” This means that you care enough about a user's daily activities, thoughts and moments to receive their updates whenever they should transmit the latest information.Twitter allows someone to receive a specific user's updates, from the pool that you follow, to be sent directly to your mobile device. Twitter is a rapidly growing community with appearances on many national news stories within the political realm, corporate businesses and - of course - among an array of Internet connections. 10

little difficult to explain how truly saturated the movie was with content, but I can remember thinking as I left the theater that it had been some time since I had seen a solid action movie that was this good. In case that I have not yet made it inexcusably blatant, the new Star Trek movie was amazing. The photography in the movie was really well done as well, with shots that opened upside down and slowly panned upright and noticeable aesthetics such as lens flares and glares of light throughout the film. A lot of risky elements were thrown into this movie, but it seemed to all work. Though I was not in a position to catch all the memorable moments recreated, having not been familiar with the series, I heard from fans that it was done well and didn’t come off as too cheesy.

him back into the music scene. It’s based on a true story with good character development, especially in Robert Downy Jr.’s character, Steven Lopez. Jaime Foxx also played the part to his potential as a tormented soul, as we’ve seen before in “Ray.” The story does carry the frustrating moments about friendship and how the real world is, with hints of current crisis such as the recession and poverty. Honestly, I think that a movie like “Reign Over Me” did a much better job of portraying this sort of concept with film, but that’s my opinion. Overall, the film was based on a very deep concept with much to teach as well as inspire. It would have been completely successful in doing so, had it kept the rhythm, if you will.

She lies there silent Staring into the night waiting praying Tension at a height
Her lips tremble mumbling Drowsiness overtakes blinking thinking Forcing herself, she wakes
There’s something about the way
When you came to town, there was a stir.
a flower opens its petals
People talked, they put you way up there.
Fear cripples hope loneliness Gripping bitter hands hurting pleading to God she demands
She closes her eyes frowns Realizing her helplessness needing falling She asks for forgiveness

Shaking her fist rising Anger takes control crying yelling Faith running low She falls back down cursing Weakness transcends shaking breaking Another battle begins Refocusing her thoughts choking Tears fall full force blaming hating Dwelling upon her past course Putting her face to her pillow screaming Taking out her frustration gasping hurting flowing like an inundation
Giving up to God quaking All her strength gone resting thanking Finally someone to lean upon Comfort relaxes her trusting No more selfish doubt smiling drifting Dreams soon come about

But I paid you no mind, just not impressed, Cause talk was talk, why get stressed?

New Releases at the LRC
Student Success Office Academic Achievement Center
Students are welcome to knock on a new door of opportunity at TSTC since the Academic Achievement Center opened February 1.
Pygmy
Hello Goodbye
The Hunted
by Chuck Palahniuk
by Emily Chenoweth
by Wayne Barcomb
Pygmy, one of a handful of young adults from a totalitarian state sent to the United States, disguised as exchange students, to live with typical American families and blend in, all the while planning acts of massive terrorism. Palahniuk depicts Midwestern life through the eyes of this thoroughly indoctrinated little killer, who hates us with a passion, in this cunning double-edged satire of an American xenophobia that might, in fact, be completely justified.
The summer after Abby Hansen’s first year of college, several months after doctors find a malignant tumor in her mother Helen’s brain, she and her parents drive to northern New Hampshire to say goodbye to a lifetime of friends.
During a single week at a historic resort, the family welcomes a small procession of visitors, and shares with them the pathos and heartache of Helen’s imminent passing.
The Hunted begins with a little girl witnessing a horrible crime. Due to the child's testimony, the murderer is convicted. Eighteen years later the killer is released on parole, and his mission is to track down the now grown woman he feels betrayed him. A deranged dance of masked identities ensues, and it is up to newly single homicide detective Frank Russo to unravel the case.
All you need at the LRC to borrow a book is a valid TSTC student ID. For more information, visit www.harlingen.tstc.edu/library.

The office brings together learning resources for students in a onestop facility that promotes active engagement through tutoring, peer mentors, advisement sessions, computer access and assistance for students seeking transfer credits to other colleges or universities. We are committed to assisting students in developing and maintaining individualized success plans that are linked TSTC academic and technical programs. The AAC personnel include pre-tech advisors, an administrative assistant and a coordinator of academic advisement for five mentors. The center at TSTC is located in Biomedical-Dental Lab Building “D,” Room 138. Office hours are 8 AM to 5 PM Mondays through Fridays. The AAC is a year-round program supported by a Title V grant through the U.S. Department of Education. The center provides services that contribute to students’ academic success, retention and timely graduation. The AAC services are available to students interested in transferring to a bachelor’s degree, those who plan on entering programs in Allied Health Pre-tech Surgical Technology and Pre-tech Dental Hygiene, students who are not officially in a technology program due to a lack of competing pre-requisite courses or beginning the semester outside of the program cohort start date, and students entering college with a General Equivalency Diploma. The AAC offers access to university advisors on the TSTC campus. We invite all students who plan to transfer to other colleges and universities to join us at the AAC information table. A representative will answer students’ questions and provide details. We have advisors from UTB/TSC, UTPA, TAMUK and UTSA, and more university advisors will arrive soon. The 48 credit hour package of Academic Core classes at TSTC will transfer to any four year public college or university in Texas. Tuition costs at TSTC are lower than many other colleges and universities, which makes the Academic Core financially attractive.
