Seika Through my i-Phone

Kyoto Seika, Winter 2016. This is a photo taken from the first classroom I taught from in the university. It has a great view of the mountains in the distance, which were often snow-capped.

Kyoto Seika, Spring 2018. I visited my old room recently to see the green of spring.

I love Seika’s dynamic, hand-drawn posters. I photograph the ones I really like.

I like the funky circle boards too, and the way students paint over them without hesitation.

My class made a magazine about dagashi in 2017. We had a great time researching and photographing all the dagashi.

When I have a big class, I make sure everyone sits in a circle. I think it’s important that the students face each other.

One of my favorite lessons is about Donut philosophy. Have you ever wondered what the relation to a donut and it’s hole is?

I like the unbridled creativity of seika students. They’re not interested in just making something ‘cute’ and ‘appealing’.

This is my favorite signboard that seems to be hanging around the entrance to the main building. I like the way UNIVER is cut from SITY.

Duncan Brotherton Teacher, Design Specific English, Kyoto Seika University. Publishes magazines, much like this one, with his students. This magazine is actually an experimental template to get students into practicing using Adobe Indesign and publishing PDFs online. It’s just simple pictures and captions set in Helvetica, but a great way to see how easy it all is to get started.
