FILM @ SÜDTIROL Er ist eine noch relativ junge Kunstform. Dafür aber umso erfolgreicher: Der Film. Dem klassischen Theater und somit der Literatur verwandt ist kaum eine andere Form der Kommunikation imstande, Geschichten so lebendig zu erzählen und Emotionen derart wirklichkeitsnah weiterzugeben.

Südtirol als Filmland. Das ist eine lange Geschichte. Mit Luis Trenker hatte das Land schon ab den 1920er Jahren einen Schauspieler und Regisseur von Weltruhm. Und so einen Vertreter, der den Film nach Südtirol brachte. Unvergessen sind die Filme, die Trenker in den Dolomiten gedreht hat –womit er dazu beigetragen hat, die Alpen im Allgemeinen und Südtirol im Speziellen bekannt zu machen. Auf Luis Trenker folgten zwar hin und wieder Filmproduktionen, die in Südtirol abgewickelt wurden, doch erst 2009 hat das Land Südtirol eine Stelle eingerichtet, die Ansprechpartner für Filmprojekte sein soll. Man hat in Südtirol verstanden, wie sinnvoll es werbetechnisch ist, wenn Produktionen zentral betreut werden. Dadurch kann auch genau nachvollzogen werden, was vom Land gezeigt wird. Und natürlich kann das Büro auch organisatorisch behilflich sein: bei der Suche nach geeigneten Locations, bei der Abwicklung der Bürokratie, beim Einholen von Drehgenehmigungen. Es ist überraschend, wie viele Filmprojekte in den letzten Jahren in Südtirol gedreht worden sind. Zu Zeiten eines Luis Trenkers war Südtirol vor allem als Kulisse für Heimat- und Bergfilme bekannt und beliebt. Das hat sich grundlegend geändert: Denn die Liste der Filmprojekte zeigt, wie vielseitig Südtirol doch ist und wie viele verschiedene Genres hier verwirklicht werden konnten. L’Alto Adige quale scenario di film. È una lunga storia. Già a partire dal 1920 l’Alto Adige è stato la patria di un attore e regista di fama mondiale Luis Trenker, che ha portato il genere cinematografico nella regione. Sono indimenticabili i film che Trenker ha girato sulle Dolomiti e con i quali ha contributo a far conoscere le Alpi in generale e l’Alto Adige nello specifico. Hanno seguito le orme di Luis Trenker diverse pellicole che hanno visto l’Alto Adige come protagonista, ma solo nel 2009 la regione ha istituito una

società provinciale quale interlocutore per progetti cinematografici capendo l’importanza di seguire ed assistere attivamente le produzioni. In questo modo si è in grado di indirizzare le riprese su ciò che si desidera promuovere della zona. Questo ente risulta inoltre utile a livello organizzativo: per aiutare a trovare la giusta location, per aiutare a sbrigare le pratiche burocratiche e a richiedere la licenza per le riprese. È incredibile il numero di progetti cinematografici che sono stati realizzati e ambientati negli ultimi anni in Alto Adige. Ai tempi di Luis Trenker l’Alto Adige era lo scenario ideale per girare film patriottistici e ambientati in montagna. Oggi questa situazione è profondamente cambiata, poiché l’elenco dei film mostra come l’Alto Adige sia scelto oggi per girare differenti generi di film. South Tyrol as a film setting. It’s a long story. Way back in 1920, South Tyrol was the homeland of a world-famous actor and director, Luis Trenker, who brought filmmaking to this region. The movies on the Dolomites filmed by Trenker are unforgettable and helped the emergence of the Alps and, more specifically South Tyrol. Various movies have followed in Trenker’s footsteps, with South Tyrol in a starring role but recently, in 2009, this region has created a provincial organization as a platform for film projects, grasping the importance of nurturing and actively assisting productions. This institution is also useful from an organisational point of view: it helps find the right location, to streamline bureaucracy and to request the filming licenses. An incredible number of film projects have been initiated and set in South Tyrol. In the times of Luis Trenker, South Tyrol was the ideal setting to film patriotic movies, set in the mountains. Today, this situation has changed profoundly, since this movie list shows how South Tyrol is chosen as the setting for various movie genres.

Vorneweg: ein Südtiroler Film fürs Kino: Bergblut Es ist eine durch und durch Südtiroler Filmproduktion: Drehbuch und Regie von einem Südtiroler, Südtiroler Kulisse, Südtiroler Schauspieler. Bergblut ist ein Historienfilm, der in der Zeit der Tiroler Freiheitskriege im frühen 19. Jahrhundert spielt. Im Frühling 1809 kommt es in Augsburg zum Streit zwischen Katharinas Ehemann, dem Tiroler Franz, und einem französischen Soldaten. Der Streit endet mit dem Tod des Soldaten, das Paar muss Augsburg verlassen und in die Heimat von Franz flüchten. Tirol ist seit vier Jahren von Bayern und Frankreich besetzt und die Besatzer unterdrücken die einheimische Bevölkerung. Entsprechend frostig wird die bayrische Arzttochter Katharina in der Heimat ihres Mannes empfangen. In seiner Heimat gerät Franz in den Dunstkreis von Andreas Hofer. Er lässt sich von der allgemeinen Begeisterung anstecken und unterstützt die Idee des Aufstandes. Franz schließt sich gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder den Aufständischen an und zieht in den Tiroler Freiheitskrieg. Katharina bleibt zurück und ist auf sich alleine gestellt. Sie erkämpft sich den Respekt der Familie und der Dorfgemeinschaft, indem sie sich den Aufgaben des Alltags stellt und alle erwarteten Pflichten erfüllt. Die Männer kehren siegreich von der Schlacht zurück, die gesamte Dorfgemeinschaft feiert überschwänglich den Sieg. Doch Katharina wird bereits an diesem Abend bewusst, dass nur eine Schlacht gewonnen wurde, dass der Krieg aber nicht zu gewinnen ist. Also entscheidet sie sich, ihren Mann kampfunfähig zu machen, um ihn nicht zu verlieren. Doch sie wird entdeckt und vom Hof verstoßen. Katharina bleibt im Dorf, wo sie Unterschlupf findet und sich im Lazarett um die Verwundeten kümmert. Der Verrat an Andreas Hofer führt zum Happy End, denn nach dessen Gefangennahme darf sie auf den Hof ihres Ehemannes zurückkehren. Der Film Bergblut war sehr erfolgreich und sorgte für volle Kinos. Welcome hat sich mit dem Autor und Regisseur Philp J. Pamer aus dem Passeiertal unterhalten und spannende Einblicke in die Filmwelt erhalten.

Un film altoatesino nelle sale cinematografiche: Bergblut – Sangue di montagna È un film puramente altoatesino: sceneggiatura e regia di un, ambientazione e attori altoatesini. Bergblut è un film di soggetto storico ambientato all’inizio del 19O secolo ai tempi della guerra per la liberazione del Tirolo. Nella primavera del 1809 scoppia una rissa tra Franz, un giovane tirolese ed un soldato francese che ne rimane ucciso. Franz e la sua giovane moglie bavarese Katharina sono costretti a lasciare Augusta e a fuggire nella terra d’origine di Franz, il Tirolo che è occupato da 4 anni da bavaresi e francesi che opprimono il popolo. Lo stesso trattamento viene riservato a Katharina, figlia di un medico bavarese, nella patria di suo marito. Da tempo lontano dalla sua patria, Franz si fa prendere dall’entusiasmo per il movimento di Andreas Hofer, oste e condottiero degli Schützen, che sollecita i contadini tirolesi alla rivolta contro

lo strapotere dei bavaresi e dei francesi. Insieme al fratello Franz parte per la guerra. Katharina, rimasta sola, deve affrontare giorni difficili nel maso svolgendo le attività quotidiane e tutti i doveri che ne derivano, fino a quando riesce a conquistare il rispetto della famiglia di Franz e dei paesani. Gli uomini tornano vittoriosi dalla battaglia, seguono fastosi festeggiamenti in paese per la vittoria durante i quali Katharina scopre che hanno vinto solo una battaglia e che la guerra continua. Katharina trova il modo per impedire al marito di partire per evitare di perderlo. Viene però scoperta dalla famiglia e scacciata dal maso. Katharina trova rifugio in paese e si dedica alle cure dei feriti nell’ospedale militare. Il tradimento nei confronti di Andreas Hofer porta ad un lieto fine, poiché in seguito alla sua cattura Katharina può ritornare al maso presso la famiglia di suo marito. Il film Bergblut (Sangue di montagna) ha avuto un enorme successo e ha riempito le sale. Welcome ha avuto l’occasione di fare una chiacchierata con il regista e sceneggiatore Philp J. Pamer originario della Val Passiria scoprendo avvincenti curiosità sul mondo del cinema.

A South-Tyrolean movie at theatres: Mountain blood (Bergblut) It is a pure South Tyrolean movie: the screenplay and direction by a South Tyrolean, South Tyrolean setting and South Tyrolean actors. Bergblut is a historical film set in the early 19th century during the war for the liberation of Tyrol. In the spring of 1809 a fight broke out between Franz, a young Tyrolean, and a French soldier who is killed. Franz and his young Bavarian wife Katharina were forced to leave Augusta and flee to the homeland of Franz, Tyrol, which had been occupied for 4 years by the French and Bavarians who oppress the people. The same treatment is reserved for Katharina, the daughter of a Bavarian doctor, in her husband's homeland. While away from his homeland, Franz gets caught up by the enthusiasm for the movement of Andreas Hofer, innkeeper and leader of the Schützen, who urge the Tyrolean peasants to revolt against the excessive power of the French and Bavarians. Franz and his brother go to war. The men returned victorious from the battle, followed by uproarious victory celebrations in the town, during which Katharina discovers that they had only won one battle and that the war continues. Katharina finds a way to prevent her husband from leaving to avoid losing him. However, she is discovered by his family and banished from the dairy farm. Katharina finds refuge in the town and dedicates herself to caring for the wounded men in the military hospital. The betrayal against Andreas Hofer leads to a happy ending because after her capture Katharina can return to the farm of her husband's family. The movie Bergblut (Mountain Blood) has been a great success and has filled the theatres. Welcome had the chance to have a chat with screenplay writer and director Philip J. Pamer, a Val Passiria native, gaining new insight on the world of filmmaking.

Interview: Philip Josef Pamer, geboren am 02. März 1985 in Meran, aufgewachsen im Passeiertal absolvierte das Realgymnasium in Meran, welches er 2004 abgeschlossen hat. Dann zog es ihn nach München, wo er 2005 an der Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film aufgenommen wurde. 2010 gründete er mit seinem Bruder die Produktionsfirma Remulus Film. Trotz seines jungen Alters hat sich Pamer bereits einen Namen in der deutschen Filmszene gemacht. Sein erster Kinofilm war Bergblut, für diesen Film schrieb er Drehbuch und führte Regie. Die Handlung dieses Films spielt in dem Tal, wo er groß geworden ist. Im Film wirkten zahlreiche Südtiroler Schauspieler mit. „Bergblut“ stellte den Durchbruch für den jungen Regisseur dar: Der Film hat verschiedene Auszeichnungen erhalten: den Publikumspreis beim Filmfest München 2010, den AudienceAward beim Filmfestival della Lessinia 2010 und die Nominierung in fünf Kategorien beim Förderpreis Deutscher Film 2010. Die Filmwelt: groß, hell, hektisch – und ganz anders als Südtirol. Wie kommt ein Südtiroler zum Film? Ich war erst 12, als meine Mutter sich eine Videokamera gekauft hat – damals für eine Familie im hintersten Passeiertal eine kleine Sensation. Damit hat alles begonnen und ich habe angefangen auf eigene Faust zu drehen und Filmemachen zu lieben. Als ich 18 war und mich entscheiden konnte, war es mein größter Wunsch professionelle Kinofilme zu drehen und ich habe mit ganzer Kraft darauf hingearbeitet, das zu erreichen. Mit 25 hatte ich dann auch schon die Filmhochschule in München abgeschlossen und meinen ersten Abendfüllenden Kinofilm in Deutschland, Österreich und Südtirol in die Kinos gebracht. Und wie fühlen Sie sich in der Filmwelt? Gut. Ich bin dankbar dafür, dass ich meinen Traum wahrmachen konnte. Hier kann ich neue Geschichten auf die Leinwand bringen und lerne dabei unglaublich viele interessante Filmkünstler und Menschen der Gegenwart kennen. Ich bin aber sehr froh, dass ich meine Familie und ein paar sehr gute Freunde außerhalb der Filmwelt habe, die mich auch mal wieder auf den Boden zurückholen. Haben wir ein falsches Bild von der Filmwelt? Ist alles so glamourös oder ist es eher ein Haifischbecken, wo man am liebsten mit dem Dolch zustößt? Der Glamour kommt ja erst bei den Premieren, wenn Schauspieler und Regisseure in Abendgarderobe auf dem roten Teppich stehen. Das ist die Spitze des Eisbergs. Dahinter stehen bei jedem einzelnen Kinofilm ein riesiger Apparat mit Hunderten von Menschen, ein beinharter Dreh und eine anstrengende Drehbuchentwicklung. Ich hatte bisher zum Glück immer Menschen um mich herum, auf die ich mich verlassen konnte. Es stimmt allerdings, dass das Metier stark umkämpft ist und man viel Kraft und Menschenkenntnis braucht. Der Weg zum Erfolg: Führt er über die eigenen Visionen und Ideen, oder führt er über den Geschmack der Massen? Das hängt davon ab, ob man Erfolg nur finanziell bemessen will oder damit auch den künstlerischen oder gesellschaftlichen Wert miteinschließt. Eigene Ideen und die Vision ihrer Umsetzung sind auf jeden Fall dein größtes Kapital dafür, egal ob man versucht den Geschmack der Masse zu interpretieren oder seinen eigenen Geschmack als Kompass zu nehmen. Ich glaube jedenfalls fest daran, dass man langfristig nur dann erfolgreich ist, wenn man beides zusammenkriegt.

Wie wichtig sind Kritiken und Kritiker? Weil niemand auf der Welt so viele Filme sehen kann, wie jährlich produziert werden, muss es Kritiker geben, die helfen eine Art Auswahl zu treffen. Aber das wird natürlich gerade dann problematisch, wenn diese Kritiker (z. B. bei großen Hollywoodstreifen) von den Filmverleihern und Studios beeinflusst werden oder den Film komplett missinterpretieren. Gute Kritiker schreiben sehr kluge und konstruktive Kritiken, das kann einem Künstler auch helfen zu wachsen. Die Kritiken haben auf jeden Fall gerade im Vorfeld eines Kinostarts großen Einfluss auf den Erfolg an der Kinokasse. Was wäre Ihr Plan B gewesen, wenn es mit dem Filmemachen nicht geklappt hätte? Einen Plan B gab es nie, weil ich innerlich immer daran geglaubt habe, dass es machbar ist. Vielleicht wäre ich Buchautor geworden, aber diesen Traum habe ich mir auch erfüllt, indem mein Bruder Konrad und ich das Buch zum Film „Bergblut“ geschrieben und herausgebracht haben. Dieses Buch skizziert authentisch den langen, steinigen Weg von der Idee bis zur Postproduktion von Bergblut. Tolle Bilder und Anekdoten bereichern die Erzählungen und es kommen auch die Schauspieler zu Wort. Zum Film Bergblut, der ja in Ihrer Heimat spielt und bei dem Sie auch mit Südtiroler Schauspielern gearbeitet haben: Worin besteht der Unterschied zwischen dem Arbeiten im kleinen Südtirol und Produktionen in der großen weiten Welt? Während andernorts oft präzise und langfristige Planung von Nöten ist, ließen sich manche Probleme bei den Dreharbeiten in Südtirol durch das ungemeine Improvisationstalent der Südtiroler direkt vor Ort lösen. Die Landschaften sind hier so gewaltig beeindruckend, dass sie jeden Film auf einer ganz neuen Ebene bereichern und die Menschen und Geschichten wirken unverbraucht, fast wie aus einer anderen Welt. Außerdem sind hier das Wetter und das Essen besser. Wie sind Sie auf die Thematik gekommen, die in Bergblut behandelt wird? Sind Sie Patriot? Ich habe gerade während meiner Pubertät großen Abstand zum Patriotismus und zur Heimatliebe gesucht. Erst als ich über 20 war, begann ich wieder, mich für meine Wurzeln zu interessieren und damit auch für die Geschichte Südtirols. Da ich im Passeiertal, dem Tal von Andreas Hofer, aufgewachsen bin, hab ich mir dann gesagt: Wieso nicht einen Film über das Aufstandsjahr 1809 drehen, der allerdings eine moderne Blickweise durch eine bayerische Hauptfigur ermöglicht? Ich glaube fest daran, dass gerade meine Generation ihre Heimat lieben kann, ohne blinden Patriotismus zu betreiben. Lieblingsspeise? Vitello tonnato. Lieblingsort? Ein einsamer Felsen im Wald des Passeiertals. Träume und Ziele für die nächste Woche, das nächste Jahr und das nächste Jahrzehnt? Nächste Woche will ich eine neue Wohnung gefunden haben, nächstes Jahr einen neuen Film abgedreht haben und nächstes Jahrzehnt will ich zehn Jahre älter sein. >

Intervista: Philip Josef Pamer nato a Merano il 02 marzo 1985 e cresciuto in Val Passiria ha frequentato il liceo scientifico diplomandosi nel 2004. Si è in seguito trasferito a Monaco di Baviera dove nel 2005 è stato ammesso all’Accademia del Cinema. Nel 2010 ha fondato insieme al fratello la casa cinematografica Remulus Film. Nonostante la sua giovane età, Pamer si è già fatto un nome all’interno del mondo cinematografico tedesco. “Bergblut” (Sangue di montagna) è stato il suo primo film uscito nelle sale cinematografiche per il quale ha scritto il copione e ha diretto la regia. Il film è ambientato nei luoghi dove è cresciuto Pamer. “Bergblut” è stato il trampolino di lancio per il giovane regista. Il film ha vinto diversi riconoscimenti: il Premio del Pubblico al Filmfestival della Lessinia 2010 e la nomina in ben cinque categorie al Festival Förderpreis Deutscher Film 2010. L’ambiente cinematografico è molto vasto e frenetico, sostanzialmente diverso dal Sudtirolo. Come si avvicina un sudtirolese a questo mondo? Il primo contatto con una videocamera l’ho avuto a 12 anni, quando mia madre se ne comprò una. Per una famiglia della remota Val Passiria era un evento importante. Da quel momento ho iniziato a girare filmati fai da te ed è nata la mia passione. A 18 il mio grande sogno era quello di girare film per il cinema e ho messo tutto l’impegno possibile per realizzarlo. A 25 anni ho concluso gli studi presso l’Accademia del Cinema di Monaco e il mio primo film cinematografico ha riempito le sale in Germania, Austria e Sudtirolo. E come si trova nell’ambiente del cinema? Bene. Ringrazio di aver potuto realizzare il mio sogno che mi permette di raccontare storie nuove sul grande schermo e di avere la possibilità di conoscere tanti interessanti maestri del cinema e altre personalità che lavorano in questo ambiente. Sono però felice di avere al di fuori del mondo del cinema la mia famiglia ed alcuni cari amici che mi sostengono e mi tengono con i piedi per terra. Abbiamo un’immagine sbagliata del mondo cinematografico? È veramente tutto così glamour o è un vasca piena di squali pronti ad attaccare? Non è tutto così glamour come ci si immagina. Il glamour si respira solo in occasione delle premiazioni, quando attori e registri sfilano sul tappeto rosso in abito da sera. Questo è veramente l'apice. Dietro ogni film ci sono invece una massiccia apparecchiatura e centinaia di persone che ci lavorano, riprese faticose e un intricato sviluppo del copione. Per mia fortuna fino ad oggi sono sempre stato circondato da persone sulle quali poter contare. Va inoltre detto che in questo ambiente vi è molta competizione e che sono necessari determinazione e conoscenza delle persone. La strada del successo: è percorribile con le proprie idee e punti di vista o bisogna adeguarsi ai gusti della massa? Dipende molto se si desidera ottenere solo il successo a livello economico o se gli si vuole dare anche valore artistico o sociale. Le proprie idee e la loro realizzazione sono in ogni caso il capitale più grande, indifferentemente dal fatto se si desidera interpretare il gusto della massa o di utilizzarlo come riferimento. Io sono fortemente convinto che a lungo termine il successo si ha solo se si uniscono entrambe le cose.

Quanto contano le critiche e i critici? Poiché nessuno al mondo è in grado di vedere così tanti film quanti ne vengono prodotti in un anno, sono necessarie le critiche che permettono di ritagliare una selezione. E’ un problema quando questi critici (ad es. nel mondo di Hollywood) sono influenzati dal distributore e dagli studi o quando fraintendono completamente il significato del film. I buoni critici scrivono delle critiche costruttive che possono anche aiutare l’artista nella sua crescita. In ogni caso le critiche influenzano molto gli incassi in occasione dell’uscita di un film nelle sale. Cosa prevedeva il piano B, qualora non fosse riuscito ad entrare nel mondo cinematografico? Non è mai esistito un piano B, perché sono sempre stato convinto di riuscire a realizzare il mio sogno. Forse sarei diventato uno scrittore, ma anche questo sogno si è concretizzato quando mio fratello Konrad ed io abbiamo scritto e pubblicato il libro per il film “Bergblut”. Questo libro descrive in maniera veritiera il lungo e tormentato percorso che conduce dalle idee iniziali alla realizzazione di "Bergblut". Strepitose immagini ed aneddoti arricchiscono il racconto e viene data voce anche agli attori. Tornando a "Bergblut" che è stato girato nella sua patria e al quale hanno partecipato attori sudtirolesi: dove sta la differenza tra lavorare nel piccolo Sudtirolo o partecipare a produzioni nel grande e vasto mondo? Mentre in altri luoghi è necessaria una precisa ad accurata programmazione preliminare, grazie al singolare talento improvvisato degli abitanti sudtirolesi che hanno partecipato alle riprese, alcune problematiche non si sono neanche presentate. Il paesaggio qui è così fortemente suggestivo da impreziosire ogni film girato e fa sembrare che fatti e personaggi provengano da tutta un'altra dimensione. Inoltre qui il tempo ed il cibo sono migliori. Come è arrivato alla tematica di cui "Bergblut" tratta? È patriota? Durante la mia adolescenza mi sono distaccato dalle idee patriottiche e di amore verso la patria. È stato soltanto dopo i 20 anni che ho iniziato ad interessarmi alle mie origini e alla storia del Sudtirolo. Dato che sono cresciuto in Val Passiria, la patria di Andreas Hofer, mi sono detto: perché non realizzare un film sull’insurrezione del 1809 raccontandola in chiave moderna attraverso il personaggio principale di provenienza bavarese? Sono fermamente convinto che proprio la mia generazione possa amare la propria patria senza coltivare patriottismo accecante. Cibo preferito? Vitello tonnato. Luogo preferito? Una roccia solitaria nel bosco della Val Passiria. Quali sono i Suoi desideri e obiettivi per la prossima settimana, l’anno prossimo e il prossimo decennio? Per la prossima settimana vorrei aver trovato un nuovo appartamento, spero di girare un nuovo film entro l’anno prossimo e di poter invecchiare nel prossimo decennio. >

Interview: Philip Josef Pamer, born March 2nd, 1985 in Merano and brought up in Val Passiria, attended a scientific high school, graduating in 2004. In 2005 he moved to Munich where he was accepted at the Cinema Academy. In 2010 he founded the Remulus Film studios with his brother. Despite his young age, Pamer has already made a name for himself in the world of German cinema. “Berglblut” (Mountain Blood) was the first movie premiering in theatres for which he wrote the screenplay and directed. The movie is set in the places where Pamer grew up. “Bergblut” was the springboard for this young director, as the film won many awards: He won the public’s critic award at the Film festival of Lessinia 2010 and a nomination in 5 categories at the festival for German films, Festival Förderpreis Deutscher Film 2010. The world of cinema is vast and frenetic, so very different from South Tyrol. How does someone coming from your area adapt to this world? My first contact with a video camera was when I was 12 years old when my mother bought me one. For a family from the remote Passiria Valley it was an important event. From that moment I started to make films by myself strictly for passion. At 18 my great dream was to make a film for the big screen and I put everything I had into making my dream come true. At 25 I finished my studies at the Cinema Academy in Munich and my first film was a success at the box office in Germany, Austria and South Tyrol. How do you find the atmosphere in the world of films? I enjoy it. I am thankful I was able to realise my dream to tell new stories on the big screen and to have the chance to meet many interesting maestros of cinema and other personalities working in this field. I am also happy o have my family that is completely separate from this world and some really good friends that support me and keep me grounded. Do we have the wrong idea of cinema? Is it really so glamorous or is it like a pool of sharks ready to attack? It’s not as glamorous as you might imagine. There’s glamour only when there are prizes to be won, when the actors and directors walk down the red carpet in formal clothes. This is really the top. Behind every film there is a tremendous army hundreds of people who work, tiring shots and intricate details to develop on the script. I am lucky because I am surrounded by people I can count on. In addition, in this field there is a lot of competition, so you need a heavy dose of determination and to have the right contacts. The road to success: can you make it with your own ideas and points of view or do you need to adjust your tastes to the masses? That depends upon whether you are looking for an economic success or if you want to give the film some social or artistic relevance. Having one's own ideas and realising them are the most valuable element, whether you want to please the masses or use them as a reference point. I'm fully convinced that in the long run you need both to succeed.

For you, how important are critics and criticisms? Because no one in the world is able to see all the films released in any one year, critics are necessary because they can make a selection from many. It can be a problem when these critics (for example in Hollywood) are influenced by distributors and studios or when they completely misunderstand the message of the film. Good critics write constructive criticism that can also help the artist in their personal growth. Critics can greatly influence the box office draw when films come out. How did you prepare for “plan B” that is, if you were not able to make it in the world of cinema? I never had a plan B because I was always convinced that I would be able to achieve my goal. Maybe I would have become a writer, but this dream also came true when my brother Konrad and I wrote and published the book for the film “Bergblut”. This book describes, quite truthfully, the long and tortured path that brought us to the first ideas and turning “Bergblut” into a reality. Incredible images and anecdotes add to the story and the actors are given their voices. Getting back to “Bergblut” that was filmed in your homeland with South Tyrolean actors: what was the difference between working in small South Tyrol or participating in productions in the wide world out there? While in other places a precise preliminary plan is necessary, thanks to the unique talents of the South Tyroleans, many scenes were shot that were completely problemfree. The landscapes are strongly evocative and add so much to every film so that it seems as if the story and actors come from another dimension. And the weather and food are the best. How did you come upon the theme of Bergblut? Are you a patriot? During my adolescence I distanced myself from patriotic ideas and the love of homeland . It was only after 20 years that I started to concern myself with my origins and the story of South Tyrol. Since I grew up in the Passiria Valley, the homeland of Andreas Hofer, I asked myself: Why not make a film about the insurrection of 1809 but in a modern theme with a main character of Bavarian origins? I'm firmly convinced that my generation can love their homeland without becoming extremists. Favorite food? Veal with tuna sauce. Favorite place? A solitary rock in the forest in the Passiria Valley. What are your hopes and dreams for next week, next year and the next decade? Next week I want to find a new apartment, I hope to shoot a new film next year and I hope to get older in the next decade. >

The greatest architectural masterpiece of South Tyrol are the Dolomites, a work of nature that was formed layer by layer over 300 million years. This was followed by the Ice Age, when this natural wonder modelled itself, to become what we can all see today. The Dolomites are the symbol of South Tyrol, they are monumental natural beauties which have recently found competitors in modern architecture. Wo soll man anfangen? Örtlich? Zeitlich? Wann begann die Südtiroler Architektur zu werden, die heute das Etikett modern trägt? Und wo? Sucht man nach den Anfängen der Südtiroler Architekturmoderne, stößt man unwillkürlich auf die Wurzeln Südtirols. Es ist die Zeit nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg, in die sich der Aufbruch in die Moderne datieren lässt. Unter dem Begriff razionalsimo war die Idee des Bauhauses in das neu entstandende Südtirol getragen worden. Dort angekommen, wurde sie von den Faschisten als Architektur deutschen Geistes abgelehnt. Die Faschisten hatten anderes mit Bozen vor. Sie wollten eine italienische Neustadt. Pompös und funktional. Fortan bestimmten die neuen Herrscher die bauliche Entwicklung eines großen Teiles der Stadt – bis zum Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs. Mussolini beauftragte 1933 den Architekten Marcello Piacentini (1881-1960) mit dem Generalbebauungsplan für Bozen. Die neue italienische Stadt Bolzano westlich des Talferufers entstand. Wer will, kann heute noch die Imponierarchitektur der Faschisten betrachten, an der neben Piacentini auch andere Architekten mitgewirkt haben. Die Arkaden des Siegesplatzes hinter dem Siegesdenkmal (1926-1928) entstanden von 1935-1937. Der monumentale Justizpalast wurde 1939-1942 erbaut. Der Sitz des 4. Alpini-Armeekorps (1934-1935) in der Armando-Diaz-Straße dokumentiert ebenso die formale Strenge des faschistischen Stils wie das Oberfinanzamt, das 1939-1942 entstand. Markante Beispiele eines umstrittenen Architekturerbes. Da dove cominciare? Da un principio spaziale? Da uno temporale? Quando nasce l'architettura sudtirolese che oggi definiamo moderna? E dove? Cercando di recuperare i suoi esordi, ci si imbatte automaticamente nelle radici del Alto Adige. Il moderno, infatti, prese l'avvio nel periodo successivo alla prima guerra mondiale. Con il nome di razionalismo, l'idea del Bauhaus fece il suo ingresso nel nuovo Alto Adige. Arrivata lì venne riconosciuta come architettura di carattere tedesco e di conseguenza rifiutata dai fascisti. Per Bolzano, i fascisti avevano in serbo altri progetti: volevano costruire una nuova città italiana, pomposa e funzionale. Negli anni a seguire, fino alla fine della

seconda guerra mondiale, i nuovi dominatori del Alto Adige determinarono lo sviluppo urbanistico di buona parte della città. Nel 1933 Mussolini incaricò l'architetto Marcello Piacentini (1881-1960) di approntare un piano regolatore generale per la città di Bolzano. Oltre il fiume Talvera, in direzione ovest, nacque così la nuova città italiana. Ancora oggi è possibile osservare diversi esempi di architetture fasciste, opera di Piacentini e di molti altri architetti: la costruzione delle arcate di Piazza della Vittoria posizionate dietro il Monumento alla Vittoria (1926-1928) risalente agli anni 1935-1937; il monumentale Palazzo di Giustizia, costruito tra il 1939 e il 1942; la sede del IV corpo d’armata degli Alpini (1934-1935) in Via Armando Diaz, documento della rigidità formale dello stile fascista. Tutti esempi, questi, di un'architettura controversa. Where to start? From a spatial point of view? From the point of view of time? When was the Tyrolean architecture we now call modern born? And where? Trying to uncover its origin, we automatically run into the roots of South Tyrol. The modern style most certainly started out in the post World War I period. With the term rationalism, the idea of the Bauhaus made its entrance in the newborn South Tyrol. As it arrived, it was recognized as German architecture, and consequently was rejected by the fascists. For Bolzano, the fascists had other projects in mind: to build a new Italian city that would be grand and functional. In the following years, until the end of World War II, the new rulers of South Tyrol led urban development in most of the city. In 1933, Mussolini commissioned the architect Marcello Piacentini (1881-1960) to prepare a master plan for the city of Bolzano. Across the Talvera river, facing west, the new Italian city was born. Even today you can see various examples of Fascist architecture, designed by Piacentini and many other architects, such as the construction of the archways of Piazza della Vittoria behind the Monument to Victory (1926-1928) dated 19351937, the monumental Palace of Justice, built between 1939 and 1942, the headquarters of the 4th Alpine soldier corps (1934-1935) in Via Armando Diaz, proof of the formal rigidity of the fascist style. These are all examples of a controversial architecture.

MODERNES BAUEN IN SÜDTIROL: DIE 1960ER JAHRE UND DANACH L'ARCHITETTURA MODERNA IN ALTO ADIGE: DAGLI ANNI SESSANTA AL DUEMILA MODERN ARCHITECTURE IN SOUTH TYROL: FROM THE SIXTIES TO THE YEAR 2000 Machen wir einen Schnitt und verlassen die Zeit des ideologisch gefärbten Bauens. Wie sah die Südtiroler Architektur nach 1945 und später aus? Es ist nicht ganz einfach, ein Bild kontinuierlicher Weiterentwicklung zu zeichnen. Bis Ende der 1960er Jahre orientieren sich Südtirols Architekten noch stark an traditionellen Südtiroler Haustypen. Mit dem Brixener Architekten Othmar Barth (1927-2010) kam Neues. Er gilt vielen als der Vater der modernen Südtiroler Architektur. Er hatte klare Vorstellungen, was gute Architektur ausmacht. Seine Philosophie: „Den Ort bauen – nicht an einem Ort bauen.“ Was Barth damit meinte, kann man in Südtirol sehen; am Kalterer See etwa das Hotel Ambach (1972-1973). Ein Bau, der sich in die Landschaft fügt, die Uferlinie des Sees aufnimmt und so mit der Umgebung in Dialog tritt. Was Barth ausmachte: Bauen war für ihn ein Zusammenspiel mit der Landschaft, bei dem er gleichzeitig ein formales Zeichen setzte. Ein anderer Name, ein anderer Ort: Algund. Dort wurde nach Plänen des Architekten Willi Gutweniger zwischen 1966-1971 die neue Pfarrkirche im Dorfzentrum von Algund errichtet. Aus südwestlicher Richtung gesehen „besticht” die Architektur – im wahrsten Wortsinn – durch den nadelspitzen Turm. Der moderne Kirchenbau verbindet altes mit neuem und steht für ein vorbildliches Beispiel zeitloser Sakralarchitektur in Italien. Und wie man einen Bogen von der nüchternen Zweckarchitektur der 1960er in die Jetztzeit schlägt, zeigt das Beispiel des ehemaligen Postgebäudes am Bahnhof von Bozen. Errichtet wurde es im Jahre 1954; ein nüchterner Altbau, der mit den Jahren immer unansehnlicher wurde – nicht nur aufgrund seiner Form. Der Südtiroler Architekt Michael Tribus hat das Gebäude kürzlich umfassend saniert und in das erste öffentliche Passivhaus Italiens verwandelt. Ein Vorzeigeprojekt in doppelter Hinsicht.

Facciamo ora un passo in avanti, lasciandoci alle spalle le costruzioni a forte coloritura idelogica. Che lineamenti ha assunto l'architettura sudtirolese dopo il 1945? Rintracciare una linea di continuità tra il passato e gli sviluppi successivi non è facile. Fino alla fine degli anni Sessanta gli architetti altoatesini erano ancora influenzati dai modelli architettonici ascrivibili alla tradizione locale. Fu l'architetto brissinese Othmar Barth a determinare una svolta in direzione del nuovo. Non a caso, egli è considerato il padre della moderna architettura altoatesina. La sua filosofia era questa: "Bisogna costruire il luogo, non costruire in un luogo". Per comprendere le parole di Barth, è sufficiente osservare le sue opere: ad esempio l'hotel Ambach (1972-1973) presso il lago di Caldaro. Si tratta di una costruzione perfettamente inserita nel paesaggio circostante. Le sue linee assecondano quelle della riva del lago, avviando un dialogo attivo tra architettura e dintorni. L'elemento stilistico che connota maggiormente le opere di Barth sta proprio nella ricerca di un accordo tra architettura e paesaggio. Spostiamoci ora in un altro luogo: Lagundo. Qui, su progetto dell'architetto Willi Gutweniger, tra il 1966 e il 1970 fu edificata la nuova Chiesa parrocchiale nel centro storico di Lagundo. Vista da sud-ovest, la chiesa penetra letteralmente nell'orizzonte grazie alla forma affilata del suo campanile. Questo edificio, in cui i caratteri antichi e gli elementi moderni si sposano perfettamente, si è conquistato un posto di rilievo nell’ambito dell’architettura sacra in Italia. Un esempio di come sia possibile proiettare la sobria architettura funzionale degli anni Sessanta fino ai giorni nostri, è costituito dall’ex edificio postale nei pressi della stazione ferroviaria di Bolzano. Il vecchio stabile delle Poste, edificato nel 1954, con il passare degli anni stava diventando sempre più inguardabile, non soltanto per ragioni formali. Di recente l’architetto altoatesino Michael Tribus l’ha sottoposto ad un’ampia opera di ristrutturazione, trasformandolo nel primo edificio pubblico in Italia costruito secondo i criteri della "casa passiva".

Let us step forward now, leaving behind the buildings with strong ideologies. What features did the South Tyrolean architecture take on after 1945? Tracing a line of continuity between past and consequent developments is not easy. Until the late Sixties, architects were still influenced by South Tyrolean architectural models attributed to the local traditions. Bressanone architect Othmar Barth initiated a turning point towards what is new. Not surprisingly, he is considered the father of modern architecture in South Tyrol. His philosophy was: "We have to build the place, not to build in a place". To understand the words of Barth, you simply need to take a look at his works, for example Hotel Ambach (1972-1973) at Lake Caldaro. This is a building that fits perfectly in with the surrounding landscape. Its lines give way to those of the lake, creating an active dialogue between architecture and surroundings. The design element characterizing most of Barth's works lies in finding an agreement between architecture and landscape. Let's move on to another place: Lagundo. Here, the new parish church in the centre of Merano was built between 1966 and 1970, according to the project of architect Willi Gutweniger. With a view from southwest, the church literally penetrates the horizon thanks to the sharp form of its bell tower. This building, where characteristics of antique and modern elements blend perfectly, gained a prominent place in the realm of sacred architecture in Italy. An example of how it can be possible to project the simple functional architecture of the Sixties to the present day is the former post office building near Bolzano's railway station. The old post office building, built in 1954, over the years was becoming increasingly unsightly, not only for obvious reasons. Recently, the South Tyrolean architect Michael Tribus has given this building extensive renovation, transforming it into the first public building constructed in Italy following the criteria known as "passive house".

NEUES BAUEN IN SÜDTIROL: DIE LETZTEN ZEHN JAHRE L’ARCHITETTURA ALTOATESINA DEGLI ULTIMI DIECI ANNI SOUTH TYROLEAN ARCHITECTURE OF THE LAST DECADE Auch hier wieder die Frage: Wo soll man anfangen? Was soll man zeigen? Wo beginnt das Sehen und Staunen? Die Zeitspanne von 2000 bis heute ist die wohl spannendste Phase moderner Architektur in Südtirol. Das kann man so stehen lassen, wenn man das Thema oberflächlich betrachtet. Was sich darunter entwickelte, hat unser Rückblick in die Geschichte gezeigt – wenn auch nur ausschnittweise. Es sind sicher die neuen Bauten der letzten Dekade, die das Thema moderne Architektur in Südtirol ins Bewusstsein einer größeren Zielgruppe gerückt hat. Moderne Architektur in Südtirol ist sogar zu einem Anziehungsfaktor für Touristen geworden. Südtirol spricht damit eine neue Klientel an: Menschen mit Interesse an Genuss und gehobener Lebensart, die (auch) Freude an anspruchsvoller Architektur haben – jenseits des Jodelstils. Und davon hat Südtirol sehr viel zu bieten. Sehr, sehr viel. So viel, dass inzwischen dicke Bücher damit gefüllt werden. Wir stellen Ihnen eine kleine Auswahl vor – pars pro toto.

1. Wohngebäude: Wohnhaus Höller in Lana (2007-2009). Ein Architektenhaus im wahrsten Sinne. Der Hausherr ist auch Bauherr. Haus Höller schwebt über dem Wein. Es hebt sich ab. Radikal modern bildet es einen augenfälligen Kontrast zur gewachsenen Weinkulturlandschaft. Haus D in Neustift (2006-2008). Ein Wohnhaus, in dem auch die Kunst wohnt. Die Kunstgalerie wird ergänzt durch eine zweistöckige Bibliothek. Bauen in unverbauter Landschaft war hier möglich. Ausblicke auf und in die Landschaft gehen schier ins Unendliche.

2. Gebäude für den Wein: Kellerei Nals-Margreid in Nals (2007-2011). Die neue Kellerei ist kein Showroom für den Wein, aber eine Schau ist sie dennoch. Und zwar für die Weinerzeugung; sie steht thematisch im Mittelpunkt. Die bestehende Weinkellerei wurde durch einen modernen Anbau erweitert. Der mit Eichenholz verkleidete Holzbau erinnert an ein Holzfass – ein Fass, in das man hineingehen kann. Kellerei Tramin (2009-2010). Ist es eine Skulptur, das ein Gebäude ist? Oder ist es ein Gebäude, das eine Skulptur ist? Es ist ein architektonisches Zeichen, das dem Vorbeifahrenden sagt: Komm her, hier wächst der Wein von Tramin. Seitlich des historischen Anlieferungshofes „wachsen“ die Anbauten aus Glas und Stahl gleichsam aus dem Weinberg und umranken das alte Kellereigebäude.

3. Zweckbauten: Salewa Headquarter in Bozen (2010-2011). Das Gebäude am Rande der Bozener Industriezone ist Firmenzentrale (mit Kinderhort und Fitness-Center für Mitarbeiter). Konzipiert auch als Treffpunkt für Bergbegeisterte, angepasst an die Geographie und Topographie Südtirols. Und sicher werden sich auch bald Architekturfans einfinden – ganz ungeplant, ganz von selbst. Denn es ist ein Landmarkgebäude, das die Blicke auf sich zieht.

Freiwillige Feuerwehr in Margreid (2009-2010). Hier wurde ein Haus in den Berg gebaut. So schön, dass man freiwillig zum Feuerwehrmann werden möchte. Man fragt sich unwillkürlich: Kann es Zufall sein, dass der Architekt Bergmeister heißt. Im Fels wurden drei Kavernen miteinander verbunden. Am Ende befindet sich ein gläserner Abschluss, in dem die Mannschaftsräume untergebracht sind.

4. Öffentliche Gebäude: Museion in Bozen (2006-2008). Von der Talfer aus gesehen führt eine geschwungene Brücke direkt auf das neue Museum für moderne und zeitgenössische Kunst zu. Diese Fassade – wie auch jene, die von der Altstadt aus zu sehen ist – ist voll verglast. Durch die vollkommene Transparenz der Stirnfassaden entsteht eine räumliche Verbindung zwischen Altstadt und Neustadt; eine symbolische „Brücke“, die besonders dann sichtbar wird, wenn der Bau von innen erleuchtet ist. Sport- & Wellnesscenter Cascade in Sand in Taufers (2009-2011). Das architektonische Leitmotiv des „kaskadischen“ Baus gründet auf der Symbiose von Wasser und Stein. Cascade liegt am Fuß der Reinbachwasserfälle. Das Gebäude wird begleitet vom Fluss Ahr. Das Bäderbauwerk „badet“ gleichsam in der Landschaft.

Anche in questo caso si ripropone la stessa domanda: da dove cominciare? Cosa è meglio segnalare? Il periodo compreso tra l’anno 2000 a oggi costituisce senz’altro la fase più interessante della moderna architettura sudtirolese. Se si intende affrontare il tema solo superficialmente, non occorre aggiungere altro. Con il nostro esame retrospettivo, anche se solo per sommi capi, abbiamo esplorato il retroterra storico che ha permesso di raggiungere i risultati odierni. Sono state senz'altro le costruzioni dell'ultimo decennio a far sì che un numero cospicuo di persone si accostasse al tema dell'architettura moderna, trasformando quest'ultima in un potente fattore di attrazione turistica. Oggi il Sudtirolo riscuote l'interesse di una nuova clientela, alla ricerca di un elevato stile di vita e particolarmente esigente anche in materia di architettura moderna. Un ambito, questo, in cui il Sudtirolo ha davvero molto da offrire, tanto che negli ultimi anni sono stati scritti diversi libri sull'argomento. Di seguito vi proponiamo una piccola scelta di opere architettoniche dell'ultimo decennio.

1. Abitazioni Casa Höller a Lana (2007-2009). Un'opera architettonica nel senso pieno del termine, poiché il proprietario di casa è anche il suo costruttore. Casa Höller è sospesa sui vigneti. Radicalmente moderna, essa contrasta in maniera evidente con il paesaggio vitivinicolo circostante. Casa D a Novacella (2006-2008). Un'abitazione in cui anche l'arte è di casa. Lo spazio espositivo fa il paio con una biblioteca disposta su due piani. Casa D è la dimostrazione che quando è possibile costruire in un luogo immerso nel verde, la vista ha modo di lambire il paesaggio fino a perdersi nell'infinito.

2. Cantine vitivinicole

1. Homes:

Cantina vitivinicola di Nalles e Magrè (2007-2011). La nuova cantina non esibisce propriamente il vino, ma la produzione del vino. La cantina preesistente è stata modernamente ampliata. La costruzione, rivestita di legno di rovere, evoca le forme di una botte. Una botte particolare, nella quale è possibile entrare. Cantina Produttori di Termeno (2009-2010). È una scultura che ricorda un edificio o viceversa? Di certo è un invito architettonico rivolto ai passanti. Il suo messaggio è chiaro: "Venite! Qui nasce il vino di Termeno". Gli edifici di nuova costruzione, di vetro e d'acciaio, sorgono attorno al maso tradizionale. Sembra quasi che nascano direttamente dai vigneti e che avvolgano la cantina preesistente.

Casa Höller a Lana (2007-2009). An architectural work in the true sense, as the owner is also the builder. Casa Höller is suspended over the vineyard. Radically modern, it contrasts strikingly with the winemaking panorama around it. Casa D in Novacella (2006-2008). A house where art is right at home. There is an exhibition space on two levels with a library. Casa D is proof that it is possible to buld a place immersed in green , the view seems to allow you to touch the landscape and its limitless sense of space.

3. Costruzioni funzionali Salewa Headquarter di Bolzano (2010-2011). L’edificio è situato ai margini della zona industriale di Bolzano. Comprende un asilo nido aziendale e un centro fitness per i dipendenti. Concepito quale ritrovo per appassionati di montagna, si adatta perfettamente alla configurazione geografica del Alto Adige. Ma si può essere certi che in tempi brevi diventerà spontaneamente un punto di riferimento per gli amanti dell'architettura. È infatti un edificio in grado di catturare lo sguardo dei visitatori. La caserma dei vigili del fuoco volontari a Magrè (20092010). Si tratta di un edificio costruito nella montagna. Ammirandolo, nasce il desiderio di diventare vigili del fuoco. Viene da chiedersi se sia un caso che l'autore di quest'opera si chiami Bergmeister (in italiano "maestro della montagna"). Scavando nella roccia, sono state ricavate tre caverne comunicanti. C’è infine una costruzione in vetro che ospita le squadre dei vigili del fuoco.

4. Edifici pubblici Il Museion di Bolzano (2006-2008). Un ponte arcuato attraversa il fiume Talvera e ci conduce al nuovo museo di arte moderna e contemporanea. La facciata che dà sul fiume, come quella che si apre sul centro storico, è di vetro. L'assoluta trasparenza delle due facciate crea un collegamento spaziale tra la città vecchia e quella nuova: si tratta di un „ponte“ simbolico che diviene particolarmente evidente quando la struttura è illuminata al suo interno. Centro benessere Cascade a Campo Tures (2009-2011). Il tema architettonico dell'edificio dialoga con le vicine cascate di Riva di Tures e richiama la simbiosi tra acqua e pietra. Accanto alla costruzione scorre il fiume Aurino. In un certo senso, lo stabilimento balneare "si bagna" nel paesaggio circostante.

Also in this case, the same question remains: where to start? Which structures should be noted? The period between 2000 and today is undoubtedly the most interesting phase of modern South Tyrol architecture. If you need to go through this topic only superficially, there is nothing else to add. With our retrospective, although not exhaustive, we have explored the historical environment which has eased the path to modern results. Buildings of the last decade have created quite a stir with the public on the theme of modern architecture, transforming it into a powerful tourist magnet. Today, South Tyrol's investment has paid off by the interest of a new type of visitor, seeking quality lifestyle, with very high standards regarding modern architecture. This is a field where South Tyrol so much to offer that in the last few years many books on this theme have been published. Here is a sampling of architectural works of the last decade.

2. Wineries: Winery of Nalles and Magrè (2007-2011). The new winery does not exactly exhibit wine on display, but winemaking. The pre-existing winery has been modernised and enlarged. The construction covered in oak evokes the form of a barrel and a very particular one that you can actually enter. Wine producers of Termeno (2009-2010). Is it a sculpture that resembles a building or vice versa? Certainly it is an architectural invitation addressed to passersby. Its message is clear: "Come! Here is where Termeno wine is born". The new glass and steel buildings surround the traditional farm. It almost seems as if they were arising directly from the vineyards, while embracing the existing winery.

3. Functional buildings: Salewa Headquarter in Bolzano (2010-2011). This building is located on the edge of the industrial area of Bolzano. It includes a nursery and a fitness center for employees. Conceived as a meeting place for mountain lovers, it fits the geography of South Tyrol perfectly. You can be sure that quickly and spontaneously, it will become a must-see for architecture lovers. It is a building that captures the eye of visitors. The barracks of the voluntary fire brigade in Magrè (2009-2010). This is a building made in the mountains. Admiring it, comes the desire to become firefighters. You may wonder whether it is by chance that the author of this work is called Bergmeister (in English "master of the mountain"). Digging into the rock, three adjoining caves were obtained. There is also a glass building that houses firefighters.

4. Public buildings: The Museion in Bolzano (2006-2008). An arched bridge crosses the river Talvera, leading to the new museum of modern and contemporary art. The façade facing the river, as the one facing the old town, is made of glass. The absolute transparency of both sides creates a spatial link between the old and the new town: it’s a symbolic "bridge" that becomes particularly evident when the structure is lit inside.ird, wenn der Bau von innen erleuchtet ist. Cascade Wellness Center in Campo Tures (2009/2011). The architectural theme of the building interacts with the nearby Riva di Tures waterfalls, evoking symbiosis between water and stone. BROTKULTUR IN SÜDTIROL LA CULTURA DEL PANE | THE CULTURE OF BREAD Würden wir – hoch oben auf einem Berg – unsere Gedanken schweifen lassen und dabei nur die Schönheit der Natur bewundern, würden wir nicht nur uns selbst etwas vorenthalten, sondern auch den Bewohnern dieses faszinierenden alpinen Szenariums unrecht tun. Obwohl uns dieser herrliche Ausblick jedes Mal berührt, ist er nur ein kleiner, wenn auch wichtiger Teil dessen, was uns während unseres Ferienaufenthaltes erwartet. Das wahre, große Erbe ist nämlich die Kultur der Menschen, welche in diesen Bergen und Tälern leben, diese kultivieren und jeden Zentimeter der traumhaften Landschaft pflegen. Eine Kultur mit tausend Facetten, die einfachen Werte, auf denen sie basiert, stets im Vordergrund haltend. Und genau diese Kultur hilft uns die Geschichte und die Traditionen derer, durch

sche kompakte Konsistenz erhält. Besondere Gewürze wie der wilde Fenchel, Koriander, Kümmel und Bockshornklee geben dem Brot seinen unvergleichlichen aromatischen Geschmack. Beschäftigt man sich eingehender mit der Produktion, wird man feststellen, dass diese außergewöhnliche Kultur noch auf einigen Bergbauernhöfen praktiziert und fortgeführt wird. Durch die natürliche Säuerung, d. h. die Fähigkeit der spontanen Gärung des Getreides, werden im Teig Gase produziert, welche dessen Volumen erhöhen und ihn somit weicher und angenehmer machen. Und hier erkennt man den Wert des Wissens, übermittelte Geheimnisse, welche weder vorhersehbar noch einfach aber extrem wirkungsvoll sind. Dieses Wissen wurde besonders den Frauen weitergegeben, die sich an den vorgegebenen

Auf der Suche nach den Wurzeln dieses großen Erbes stieß ich auf das Südtiroler Brot, welches nicht einfach nur ein traditionelles Produkt ist, sondern ein starkes Symbol der lokalen Kultur. Die Rede ist vom typischen Südtiroler Roggenbrot mit natürlicher Säuerung, welches nach altem Brauch im Holzofen gebacken wird. Ein- bis zweimal jährlich wurde dieses einzigartige Brot nach einem speziellen Verfahren und von Generation zu Generation übertragenem Können und Wissen gebacken. Alles beginnt mit dem Roggen, ein hartes und resistentes Korn, welches sich durch gekonnten Anbau an die schwierigen Bedingungen der Berge anpassen kann. Ein im Roggen enthaltenes einzigartiges Gluten verhindert die Gärung, wodurch das Brot seine charakteristi-

Tagen der wichtigen und delikaten Aufgabe der Herstellung des Brotvorrates für die darauffolgenden Monate widmeten. Eine wesentliche Arbeit in der Familienwirtschaft, der große Achtung zuteil wurde. An diesen Tagen beschäftigte man sich von morgens bis abends ausschließlich mit dem Brotbacken: Von der Herstellung des Teiges, welcher mit der bereits Tage zuvor vorbereiteten Hefemischung verknetet wird, bis zum abschließenden Backen. Das fertige Produkt wurde dann in eigenen Racks aufbewahrt um sie vor Schimmel und Gerüchen zu schützen. Frisches Brot wurde nur kurze Zeit nach der Herstellung verzehrt, danach wurde es gewöhnlich trocken konsumiert. Zudem fand es Verwendung in Suppen und – in Wasser eingeweicht – für die Zubereitung von anderen Gerichten. Die Tatsache,

dass es immer noch Menschen gibt, welche dieses Brot herstellen können, lässt uns aufatmen und ermutigt uns, diese aufzufinden. Dieses Südtiroler Brot verdient es wirklich, den Verzehr einer Verkostung gleichkommen zu lassen. Eine Marende mit Speck, Käse und einigen Scheiben Roggenbrot verleitet uns nahezu am Brot zu riechen, die Konsistenz zu messen, die verschiedenen Gewürze herauszuschmecken und das Brot schlussendlich zu genießen wie eine echte Spezialität. Ich hatte das Glück eine Person kennen zu lernen, welche die Kunst beherrscht, das traditionelle Roggenbrot herzustellen, wie es bereits ihre Großeltern machten und vermutlich Generationen vor ihnen. Die-

ses Brot ist ein Produkt, welches klar die Eigenständigkeit, Sparsamkeit und strikte Planung verdeutlicht – alles wichtige Faktoren für Menschen, welche eine Landwirtschaft unter solch schwierigen Bedingungen führen. Man kann die Berge mehr oder weniger lieben, Leidenschaft spüren oder dort einfach nur Urlaub machen, aber man kann nicht die Zeichen dieser tiefgründigen Kultur, die sich hier entwickelt hat, ignorieren. Schon eine einfache Geste wie die Wahl eines guten Brotes zeigt Anerkennung und Respekt gegenüber den Personen, welche diese Tradition überlieferten, das Verfahren perfektionierten und weiterentwickelten. Se riflettendo sulla montagna ci fermassimo a pensare solo alle bellezze naturali, faremmo un grave torto a noi stessi e a chi governa quella meraviglia da secoli. Gli splendidi scenari alpini, che ci emozionano a ogni sguardo, sono solo una parte seppur rilevante del sistema montano che ci accoglie durante le vacanze. Più o meno percepibile, il vero grande patrimonio è la cultura della gente che abita questi monti, che coltiva queste valli, che cura ogni centimetro di un territorio che appare ovunque meraviglioso. Proprio questa cultura, che sa mostrarsi in mille espressioni riportando sempre ai valori semplici su cui è fondata, aiuta a conoscere la storia e le tradizioni di chi l’ha prodotta, e dovrebbe guidarci sempre nel capire e interpretare ciò che ci sta intorno. Cercando di comprendere le radici di questo grande patrimonio mi sono

imbattuto nel pane altoatesino e ho capito che non è solo un alimento tradizionale ma uno dei simboli della cultura locale. Parlo del pane all’antica, quello fatto con la farina di segale (e solo poca di frumento), a lievitazione naturale e cottura a legna. La gente di queste montagne lo faceva in casa una o due volte l’anno, mediante un procedimento all’apparenza semplice ma intriso di conoscenze e saperi profondi, tramandati da una generazione all’altra come si è sempre fatto in ambito rurale. Tutto nasce dalla segale, cereale tenace e resistente che se ben coltivato si adatta alle condizioni difficili dell’ambiente montano. Singolare anche per la presenza di un glutine non in grado di sostenere la lievitazione, la segale caratterizza il pane che ne deriva per la consistenza compatta che le conferisce. Il profumo aromatico e unico è anche frut-

to delle erbe odorose che entrano nell’impasto, dal seme di finocchio selvatico, al coriandolo, dal cumino, alla trigonella. Se poi si scende più a fondo indagando il sistema di produzione, allora ci si confronta davvero con una cultura secolare che in alcuni casi, soprattutto nei masi di montagna, è ancora viva e praticata. Perché il pane di segale sfrutta la lievitazione naturale, ovvero la capacità dei cereali di fermentare spontaneamente, producendo quei gas che racchiusi nella struttura della pasta la fanno aumentare di volume, consentendo al pane di diventare più morbido e gradevole. E si torna sempre alla conoscenza, ai saperi per nulla scontati né semplici ma estremamente efficaci. Saperi affidati soprattutto alle donne, che nei giorni prestabiliti si dedicavano a questo importante e delicato compito per produrre la riserva da accantonare per diversi mesi: un lavoro essenziale nell’economia familiare e per questo curato con attenzione. Da mattina a sera, quel giorno si dedicava quasi esclusivamente alla panificazione, a partire dall’impasto del lievito – già avviato giorni prima – fino alla preparazione della pasta, alla lievitazione e infine alla cottura. Il prodotto finito veniva poi conservato in apposite rastrelliere da proteggere dalla muffa e dai roditori. Ciò ci fa capire come il pane fresco si mangiasse solo nei pochi giorni dopo la produzione, mentre di solito lo si consumasse secco,

usandolo quindi nelle zuppe o bagnandolo in acqua come ingrediente per altre preparazioni. Il fatto che qua e là si trovi ancora chi oggi lo produca con questo metodo antico, direi quasi che rincuora e incoraggia a cercare questi bravi panificatori. Perché mangiare un pezzo di pane altoatesino non deve essere un gesto scontato ma quasi una degustazione: il prodotto lo merita, davvero. E anche il solo spuntino a base di speck e formaggio, accompagnati da qualche fetta di pane nero, non sarà più lo stesso, perché ci verrà voglia di annusare il pane, misurarne la consistenza, cercare di distinguere i profumi delle varie erbe e infine assaggiarlo come si fa per una vera specialità. Ho avuto la fortuna di conoscere chi sa ancora fare il pane nero all’antica, come lo facevano i suoi nonni e probabilmente altri familiari prima di loro; è un prodotto che ricorda l’autonomia, l’economia, il senso della programmazione, tutti concetti essenziali per chi fa agricoltura in un contesto difficile. Si può amare più o meno la montagna, esserne appassionati o semplicemente trascorrervi un periodo di vacanza, ma non si possono ignorare i segni della profonda cultura che ha generato; e anche il semplice gesto di scegliere un buon pane, diventa ragione di apprezzamento e rispetto verso chi ha tramandato la tradizione, perfezionato il metodo, aggiornato i gesti. If we reflect on the mountains and stop to think only about their natural beauty, we are missing an important link - the people who have taken care of these wonders for centuries. Whether perceptible or not, the true heritage is the culture of the people living in these mountains, cultivating the valleys, taking care of each centimetre of this magnificent territory. It is this culture that shows itself in myriad ways, always highlighting the simple values on which it is founded, to help uncover the history and traditions of those who produced them and constantly aids us as a guide to understanding and interpreting what is around us. In the search of understanding these roots I have delved into the subject of bread from South Tyrol and I began to understand that it is not just a traditional food but also a symbol of the local culture. I’m speaking of bread from the olden times, the one made from rye flour (and very little wheat) with natural leavening and baked in a wood-burning oven. The people from these mountains made bread once or twice a year in a process that was seemingly simple but utilising knowledge of secrets, passed down from generation to generation as it has always been done in rural areas. It all stems from rye, a hearty and resistant grain that when well cultivated adapts itself to the difficult situations in the mountain environment. It is unique due to the presence of gluten that is not able to sustain itself to rise; rye is a kind of bread known for its compact nature. The aromatic profile is distinctive due to the fragrant herbs that penetrate the dough, wild fennel seeds, coriander, cumin and fenugreek. If we go in depth to look at the production we will find a system with very deep roots: in some cases, especially in the masi - or mountain farms - it is still produced in the traditional way. Rye bread uses natural leavening, or the capacity for the grains to ferment spontaneously, producing gas, that enclosed in the structure of the dough, increases in volume allowing the bread to become softer and better tasting. And of course there is knowledge, secrets that are not to be taken for granted,

nor simple, but very effective. Knowledge entrusted above all to the women, who on set days, dedicated themselves to this important and delicate task to produce a supply to set aside for many months - an essential job for the economics of the family and for this reason taken very seriously. From morning until night, the day that was dedicated exclusively to bread making, starting from the mixing of the ingredients to the adding of the yeast - already added days before - to the preparation of the dough, the rising and finally the baking. The final product is then put away on special racks as protection against mould and rodents. In this way, fresh bread is enjoyed only for a few days after the production; afterward the bread is consumed dry, used in soup or by dipping in water as an ingredient in other preparations. The fact that here and there you can still find those producing bread in the old method, gives heart and encourages those who are truly good bread makers. Because eating a piece of bread from South Tyrol is not a casual gesture but almost a "tasting": the product is really that special. And even a snack with speck and cheese, accompanied by a few slices of black bread is not the same because you will want to smell the bread, check its consistency, try to distinguish the herbs used and finally taste it as you would for a specialty product. I had the good fortune to know someone who still makes black bread in the old method, as his grandparents did and probably other family members before them, it is a product that brings to mind independence, economy, the sense of planning in advance, all essential concepts for those who farm in challenging conditions. You can love the mountains or not, be passionate about them or simply spend some of your holiday there, but you cannot ignore the deep signs of a culture generated by the mountains; even the simple gesture of choosing a good loaf of bread becomes a reason to appreciate and respect those who have passed on this tradition, perfected the methods, updated the gestures. Die Falknerei ist eine der ältesten Traditionen der Araber und mit viel Liebe und Zeit wird sie noch heute in über 65 Ländern praktiziert. Der bekannte Haubenbauer Giancarlo Pirrotta fertigt die Falkenhauben aus besonderem Leder und Materialien, und der Tiroler Goldschmied verwandelt sie zu einem kostbaren Einzelstück. Die Hauben kosten von 5.000 bis über 40.000 Euro, sind mit wertvollen Edelsteinen verziert und können mit dem Familienwappen oder den Initialen personalisiert werden. Das Verarbeiten des dünnen Leders, der wertvollen Materialien und die Personalisierung war eine große Herausforderung und erforderte viel Knowhow. Jedoch gelang es dem Unternehmen ein weltweit neues Verfahren und Werkzeug zu entwickelt, um Falkenhauben zu veredeln.

Elegant sporting attire and bold colours will remain in the autumn/winter collection. W: What are the colour trends for this season? HP: This summer, for both men and women, we will see tones of orange, rich yellow, pink, green and electric blue. And we can't forget: white. W: What is the one "must-have"? HP: Colourful slacks and trousers! W: In summer of 2012 another store will open: Maximilian Fashion Store in Bolzano. Can you tell us exactly when? HP: The opening is scheduled for the beginning of August. We can't wait to show our new store to our friends and clients!

Bozen ist nicht nur die Landeshauptstadt Südtirols, sondern auch die einzige Stadt südlich der Alpen, welche einen intakten gotischen Stadtkern besitzt. In der Nähe des Bozner Doms findet man beispielsweise noch romanische und spätgotische Mauerreste. Die prächtigen Kirchen im romanischen und gotischen Stil – wie das Dominikanerkloster, das älteste Kloster der Stadt – hinterlassen einen nachhaltigen Eindruck. Auch die malerischen Weinberge am Hügel von St. Magdalena oder das alpine Grün der Nadelwälder des nahegelegenen Kohlererhanges runden den Besuch der Landeshauptstadt ab. Sehenswert sind auch das Stadtmuseum, das Naturkundemuseum mit der Entstehungsgeschichte der Dolomiten, das Merkantilmuseum und das Bergmuseum sowie das Museion, das Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst. Der Fund der berühmten Gletschermumie „Ötzi“, die im Archäologiemuseum ausgestellt ist, ermöglicht einen Blick in die Urgeschichte der Wissenschaft. Hier findet heuer unter anderem eine Sonderausstellung zum 20. Jubiläum des Mumienfundes statt. Non dimenticate di visitare il Museo Civico, il Museo di Scienze Naturali che illustra la storia della formazione delle Dolomiti, il Museo Mercantile, il Museo della Montagna e il Museion, il museo di arte moderna e contemporanea. Una visita al Museo Archeologico dove si trova la mummia "Ötzi" vi permetterà di fare un salto nella preistoria. Una novità mondiale che ha scosso grande entusiasmo.

IM TAL DER SCHILDHÖFE NELLA VALLE DEI "MASI DEGLI SCUDIERI" IN THE VALLEY OF THE MASI OF THE SQUIRES Das Passeiertal ist jenes Tal, das sich nördlich von Meran ausbreitet. Aufgrund seiner Nord-Süd Ausrichtung war es bereits seit der Vorzeit ein wichtiger Fernhandelsweg. Denn über das Timmelsjoch gelangt man ins Ötztal, über den Jaufenpass führt der Weg hinunter nach Sterzing. Dort, wo sich die Wege zu den Passübergängen teilen, liegt St. Leonhard, Hauptort des Tales. Das Dorf hat sich, aufgrund seiner strategisch günstigen Lage, schon früh zu einem wichtigen Handelsplatz entwickelt. Denn hier wurden die Pferde gewechselt, hier machte man Rast. Und somit wurden hier Waren umgeschlagen. Das Tal hat aufgrund seiner Lage im Land Tirol eine wichtige strategische Rolle gespielt: Denn von hier aus war man, geografisch gesehen, dem Landesfürsten am nächsten. Weshalb die Grafen von Tirol um die Wichtigkeit der Loyalität der Passeirer wussten. Im 13. Jahrhundert wurde den größten Bauern das Recht gewährt, in den niederen Adel aufzusteigen. Das bedeutete, dass die so Privilegierten dem Landesherrn in den Krieg folgen mussten, gleichzeitig aber von Steuern und Abgaben befreit waren. Es entstanden die Schildhöfe, und die Besitzer dieser Höfe durften, im Gegensatz zu den Gemeinen, auf ihren Ländereien jagen und fischen, sie durften ihre Waffen auch in der Kirche und vor Gericht tragen. Die Politik, welche die Grafen von Tirol damit verfolgten, ist leicht nachzuvollziehen: Dadurch wurde eine schnell zur Verfügung stehende Einsatztruppe geschaffen, die aufgrund der gewährten Privilegien dem Landesherrn zur Gänze untertan war. Als 1420 der Regierungssitz der Grafen von Tirol vom Schloss Tirol nach Innsbruck verlegt wurde, schwand die Wichtigkeit der Schildhöfe. Trotzdem blieben sie mit ihren Rechten bestehen. Heute gibt es im Passeiertal noch elf Schildhöfe.

La Val Passiria, che si apre a Merano estendendosi verso nord, è un'importante direttrice di traffico fin dalla preistoria grazie alla sua posizione geografica: valicando il Passo del Rombo si arriva infatti in Ötztal, mentre attraversando il Passo di Monte Giovo si raggiunge Vipiteno. Proprio lì, dove si dipartono le strade per i due valichi, si trova San Leonardo, capoluogo della valle. Il paese, per questa sua qualità di crocevia, è diventato un centro di grande rilievo per le attività commerciali. In passato i viaggiatori vi si fermavano per riposarsi, per cambiare i cavalli e per scambiarsi le merci. Sempre grazie alla sua collocazione geografica, la Val Passiria ha svolto un'importante funzione strategica nell'ambito del Tirolo: essa era infatti la valle più vicina alla residenza dei Conti di Tirolo, che seppero far tesoro della lealtà dei valligiani. Nel tredicesimo secolo, ad alcuni contadini della Val Passiria fu concesso di accedere ai gradi inferiori della nobiltà. Con due conseguenze: i contadini investiti dei privilegi erano tenuti a seguire il conte in guerra, ma al contempo venivano esonerati dal pagamento di tasse e tributi. Nacquero così i cosiddetti "masi degli scudieri", i cui proprietari, al contrario dei proprietari dei masi semplici, godevano del diritto di caccia e di pesca nei propri territori e potevano entrare armati nelle chiese o nei tribunali dell'epoca. I conti di Tirolo ottennero così un obiettivo politico molto chiaro: dotarsi rapidamente di un corpo di guardia composto da uomini fidati, i quali, per mantenere i privilegi acquisiti, erano completamente assoggettati al volere del conte. Quando nel 1420 la sede dei Conti di Tirolo fu spostata da Castel Tirolo ad Innsbruck, l'importanza dei "masi degli scudieri" diminuì. Ciononostante essi continuarono a beneficiare dei diritti acquisiti. Oggi, in Val Passiria, ci sono ancora undici "masi degli scudieri".

The Passeier Valley belongs to the most beautiful valleys of South Tyrol and reaches from the town Meran to the well-known Jaufen- and Timmels pass. GEHEIMNISVOLLE LADINISCHE GESCHICHTE LA STORIA MISTERIOSA DELLE VALLI LADINE THE MYSTERIOUS HISTORY OF THE LADIN VALLEYS Sie ist die zweifellos älteste Sprache in Südtirol. Aber auch die kleinste. Denn Ladinisch, vor Jahrtausenden die am weitesten verbreitete Sprache im Alpenraum, wurde immer weiter zurückgedrängt. Und konnte sich letzten Endes nur noch in fünf entlegenen Tälern halten. 30.000 Menschen sprechen in Südtirol ladinisch. Die Sprache geht auf die Römer zurück, die 15 v. Christus den Alpenraum eroberten und sich ansiedelten. Die Ureinwohner im Alpenraum waren die Räter. Deren Sprache vermischte sich im Laufe der Jahrhunderte mit dem Lateinischen und eine neue Sprache – das Räterromanische entstand. Einst reichte die Sprache vom Gardasee bis an die Donau und vom St. Gotthard Pass bis nach Triest. Doch dann kam die Völkerwanderung und mit ihr die Langobarden vom Süden und die Bajuwaren vom Norden. Sie brachen in den räterromanischen Sprachraum ein und verdrängten die ursprüngliche Sprache. In abgelegenen Tälern konnte sich das Ladinische halten, aber erst mit Inkrafttreten des Südtiroler Autonomiestatutes haben die Ladiner die Anerkennung als sprachliche Minderheit erhalten. Die ladinischen Täler in Südtirol sind das Gadertal, das als Nebental des Pustertals von St. Lorenzen 35 km bis zum Sellastock reicht, und das Grödnertal, das bei Waidbruck als Nebental des Eisacktals 30 km ebenfalls bis an die Sella reicht. Die Bewohner dieser beiden Täler sind heute stolz auf die eigene Sprache und Kultur, die in den Schulen unterrichtet wird und sich somit in die Zukunft retten sollte. In Gröden hat sich neben der traditionellen Sprache auch eine besondere Handwerkskunst erhalten: die Holzschnitzerei. Diese Handwerkskunst ist entstanden, weil so die langen Wintermonate genutzt werden konnten, um die Einnahmen aus der kargen Landwirtschaft aufzubessern. Denn die ladinischen Täler, die heute Tourismushochburgen sind und aus dem Fremdenverkehr ihren Wohlstand erlangt haben, waren sehr arme Talschaften. Ladinien verdanken wir aber nicht nur eine einmalige und schöne alte Sprache, sondern vor allem auch die wunderschönen Geschichten, die vom Königreich des Fanes, von König Laurin und seinem Rosengarten, von Puppen, Hexen und wundersamen Gestalten handeln – nämlich die einmalig schönen Dolomitensagen.

Tra gli idiomi ufficiali del Sudtirolo, la lingua ladina è senza dubbio la più antica, ma anche quella che può vantare il minor numero di parlanti. Nel corso di circa due millenni, da lingua più diffusa dell'arco alpino si è trasformata in un idioma a diffusione molto limitata, i cui locutori sono concentrati in cinque aree distinte. In Sudtirolo la lingua ladina è parlata da circa 30.000 persone. Il ladino nacque in seguito alla conquista delle Alpi da parte dei Romani, avvenuta nell'anno 15 a.C. Nel corso dei secoli successivi, la lingua degli abitanti originari dell'area alpina, i Reti, si fuse gradualmente con il latino, dando vita all'idioma retoromanzo. In passato l'area linguistica ladina si estendeva dal lago di Garda al Danubio e dal Passo del San Gottardo a Trieste. Nell'epoca delle grandi migrazioni, i Longobardi da sud e i Baiuvari da nord irruppero nel mondo alpino, limitando notevolmente l'area di diffusione della lingua retoromanza, che continuò ad essere praticata in poche valli isolate. Solo con l'entrata in vigore dello Statuto di Autonomia della Provincia Autonoma di Bolzano, i Ladini hanno ottenuto il riconoscimento di minoranza linguistica. Le valli ladine del Sudtirolo sono la Val Badia, una laterale della Val Pusteria che si estende da San Lorenzo al gruppo di Sella, e la Val Gardena, una trasversale della Val d'Isarco che si apre all'altezza di Ponte Gardena estendendosi anch'essa fino al gruppo di Sella. Gli abitanti di entrambe le valli sono orgogliosi della propria cultura e della propria lingua, le quali, essendo insegnate nelle scuole, vengono preservate dai rischi della globalizzazione. In Val Gardena, oltre alla lingua, si è riusciti a conservare anche una forma particolare di artigianato artistico: l'intaglio del legno. Questa pratica nacque per ovviare all'inattività dei lunghi mesi invernali, allo scopo di integrare gli scarsi guadagni ottenuti con l'attività agricola. Le valli ladine, che devono il loro attuale stato di benessere al turismo di qualità, erano infatti delle valli molto povere. I Ladini non meritano però attenzione soltanto per la loro lingua bella ed antica. A loro dobbiamo anche le splendide saghe che narrano del regno dei Fanes, di re Laurino e il suo roseto, di streghe, bambole e altre bizzarre creature: stiamo parlando naturalmente delle saghe delle Dolomiti.

Among the official languages of South Tyrol, the Ladin language is without doubt the oldest but it is also the one with the fewest number of speakers. During nearly two thousand years it went from being the most widely spoken language in the Alps, to an idiom with a very limited area of use, whose speakers are concentrated in five distinct zones. In South Tyrol, the Ladin language is spoken by about 30,000 people. Ladin began after the conquest of the Alps by the Romans in the year 15 B.C. Over the following centuries, the language of the inhabitants of the alps, Reti, gradually merged with Latin, creating this Rhaeto-Romance idiom. In the past, the Ladin-speaking area stretched from Lake Garda to the Danube River and from the St. Gotthard Pass to Trieste. In the large migration era, the Longobards from the south and the Bavarians from the north burst into the Alpine world, greatly reducing diffusion area of this Rhaeto-Romance language, which continued to be spoken in a few isolated valleys. Only with the entry of the Statute of Autonomy of the Autonomous Bolzano Province, the Ladin have obtained the recognition of their minority language. The Ladin valleys of South Tyrol are the Val Badia, a side of the Val Pusteria extending from San Lorenzo to the Sella group, and Val Gardena, crossing the Val d’Isarco opening up at Ponte Gardena, and extending up to the Sella group. possible to maintain a particular craft form: woodcarving. This practice grew to overcome the inactivity of the long winter months to help supplement the low profits of the agricultural activity. The Ladin valleys, which owe their present welfare state to quality tourism, were very poor valleys. However, the Ladin do not deserve attention only for their beautiful and ancient language. We owe them also the wonderful sagas of the reign of Fanes, of King Laurino and his rose garden, witches, dolls and other bizarre creatures: these are of course the Dolomites sagas.

TAL DER BAHNEN DAS PUSTERTAL LA PUSTERIA, VALLE DELLE FERROVIE PUSTERIA, VALLEY OF THE TRAINS Es war die österreichische Südbahngesellschaft, die den touristischen Reiz des Pustertals schon sehr früh erkannte. In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts entstanden in allen Teilen der k.u.k. Monarchie Eisenbahnen. So auch im Pustertal. 1871 wurde die Eisenbahn eröffnet – eine Bahn, die in Toblach ihre höchste Erhebung zu passieren hatte. Es war die Zeit des boomenden Fremdenverkehrs. Die Südbahngesellschaft beschränkte sich nicht nur auf den Bau von Eisenbahnlinien, auch die dazugehörige touristische Infrastruktur wurde mit gebaut: So entstand in Toblach das Grand Hotel, in dem die Reichen und Schönen der Zeit die Sommermonate verbringen konnten. Nachdem die Hauptstrecke eröffnet worden war, gab es auch Seitentäler, die überzeugt waren, dass ihre Zukunft im Tourismus liegen würde. 1907 begannen die Arbeiten an der Bahnlinie zwischen Bruneck und Sand in Taufers. Das Tauferertal sollte an den internationalen Bahnverkehr angebunden werden. Dazu wurden keine Kosten gescheut: Die Taufererbahn war ab ihrer Eröffnung 1908 elektrifiziert. Nach den ersten Betriebsjahren gab es Pläne, die Strecke bis nach Steinhaus zu verlängern. Doch zur Umsetzung dieses Plans kam es nicht. Denn 1914 erschütterte ein epochales Ereignis die gute alte Zeit: Der erste Weltkrieg brach aus, Bahnen bekamen eine neue Bedeutung. Der erste Weltkrieg wurde in den Gipfeln der Südtiroler Berge mit Erbitterung geführt, um Nachschub an Menschen und Waffen an die Front zu bringen, wurden neue Bahnen angelegt. Eine führte von Toblach durch das Höhlensteintal nach Cortina. Diese Bahn war als reine Kriegsbahn angelegt worden, doch nach dem Krieg übernahm sie eine friedliche, eine touristische Rolle. 1956, als die olympischen Winterspiele in Cortina abgehalten worden sind, spielte diese Bahn eine wichtige Rolle beim Zuschauertransport. Mitte der 1950er Jahre wurde es eng für die Nebenbahnen in Südtirol: Der Zeitgeist war ein anderer, die individuelle Mobilität verdrängte die Bahnen: 1957 wurde die Tauferer Bahn eingestellt, 1962 die Dolomitenbahn. Geblieben ist die Erinnerung an jenes Verkehrsmittel, das die Entwicklung des Fremdenverkehrs möglich gemacht hat. Und das heute wieder viele gerne zurück hätten. Weil Eisenbahnen nicht nur auf Nostalgiker eine besondere Faszination ausüben. Sondern auch entspannte Mobilität ermöglichen.

Il merito di aver individuato e valorizzato le notevoli attrattive turistiche della Val Pusteria si deve all’Imperial Regia Privilegiata Società delle ferrovie meridionali. Nella seconda metà del diciannovesimo secolo in tutti i territori dell'impero asburgico furono costruite delle linee ferroviarie. La ferrovia della Val Pusteria, il cui punto più elevato si trova all’altezza di Dobbiaco, fu inaugurata nel 1871. In quel periodo il movimento turistico era in rapida espansione. La Società Imperial Regia non limitò il proprio intervento alla costruzione di linee ferroviarie, ma realizzò anche le necessarie infrastrutture destinate alla ricezione dei turisti: nacque così il Grand hotel di Dobbiaco, meta estiva del "bel mondo" europeo dell'epoca. La ferrovia della Val Pusteria, nella quale la Provincia autonoma di Bolzano ha investito notevoli risorse per migliorare la qualità dei servizi, raccoglie sempre più consensi tra i viaggiatori. Lungo la linea ferroviaria compresa tra Fortezza e San Candido si snoda una pista ciclabile percorribile in entrambe le direzioni di marcia. Durante il tragitto è sempre possibile percorrere alcuni tratti di strada con il treno per risparmiare energie. Una volta terminata la costruzione della ferrovia principale della Val Pusteria, si comprese che il movimento turistico costituiva un'opportunità anche per le valli laterali. Nel 1907 furono avviati i lavori per la costruzione del tratto ferroviario compreso tra Brunico e Campo Tures, grazie al quale la Valle di Tures entrò a far parte del circuito turistico internazionale. Non si badò a spese: fin dalla sua inaugurazione la linea ferroviaria Brunico-Campo Tures era elettrificata. Dopo qualche anno si progettò di prolungarla fino a Ca' di Pietra, ma l'idea non venne realizzata. Nel 1914, con lo scoppio della Prima Guerra Mondiale, la funzione delle ferrovie mutò radicalmente. Le cime delle montagne sudtirolesi divennero teatro di aspri combattimenti e, per garantire il trasporto al fronte di uomini e armi, vennero costruite nuove ferrovie. Una di queste conduceva da Dobbiaco a Cortina passando per la Val di Landro. Dopo il conflitto essa perse la sua funzione bellica e assunse un importante ruolo turistico: nel 1956, in occasione delle Olimpiadi invernali di Cortina, si rivelò utilissima per il trasporto degli spettatori. Nella metà degli anni Cinquanta del secolo scorso le linee ferroviarie secondarie subirono un inevitabile declino, legato alle mutate esigenze del tempo che spingevano verso la mobilità individuale: nel 1957 fu chiusa al traffico la ferrovia Brunico-Campo Tures e lo stesso destino toccò alla ferrovia delle Dolomiti nel 1962. Quel che ci resta è il ricordo di un mezzo di trasporto che ha reso possibile lo sviluppo turistico nella nostra provincia. Molti lo rimpiangono. Anche perché oggi le ferrovie, sarebbero la soluzione a molti problemi.

The credit for having recognised and added value to the many tourist attractions in the Pusteria Valley should be given to the Imperial Reign of the Privileged Society of the Southern Railway. In the second half of the 19th century throughout the territory the Hapsburg Empire was responsible for building rail lines. The Pusteria Valley line, of which the highest point is in Dobbiaco, was inaugurated in 1871. At that time tourist travel was in rapid expansion. The Imperial Reign Society did not limit themselves with building a railroad, but also built the infrastructure for tourism: this is how the Grand Hotel of Dobbiaco was conceived, a summer residence of the European elite of the era. The rail line of Val Pusteria is enjoying growing popularity from tourists thanks to the substantial resources spent to improve services by the autonomous province of Bolzano. Along the rail line between Fortezza and San Candido there is a bike trail that can be taken in two directions. During the trip there is always the option to take certain parts by train to save energy. Upon completion of the main rail line from Val Pusteria, it was clear that tourism was a new opportunity for the neighbouring valleys as well. In 1907 work began for the railway seg-

ment from Brunico to Campo Tures, thanks to which Valle di Tures entered the international tourist circuit. Price was no object: since its inception the Brunico-Campo Tures line was electrified. After a few years there was a plan to expand the line to Ca' di Pietra, but the project never materialised. In 1914, with the outbreak of WWI, the functioning of the railway changed radically. The mountain peaks of South Tyrol became theatres of terrible battles and to guarantee the transport of arms and soldiers, new lines were built. One of these connected Dobbiaco with Cortina through the Landro Valley. After the conflict, the line assumed an important role in tourism: in 1956, for the Winter Olympics in Cortina, the route was extremely useful for the transport of spectators. In the mid 1950's,the popularity of the secondary railway lines waned, due to the new way of life that favoured independent transport : In 1957 the line from Brunico to Campo Tures was closed and the line of the Dolomites railroad met the same fate in 1962. What remained was the memory of a mode of transport that made tourism to our province possible. Many people are displeased about it, because railways could be the solution to many of today's problems.

SEISER ALM: GRÖSSTE HOCHALM IN EUROPA ALPE DI SIUSI: L’ALTIPIANO PIÙ GRANDE D‘EUROPA ALPE DI SIUSI: THE LARGEST PLATEAU IN EUROPE In jedem Gebirgsland sind Almen der Inbegriff für Erholung und Genuss. So auch in Südtirol. Und hier vor allem im Gebiet der Dolomiten. Denn kaum sonst irgendwo auf der Welt wachsen die Felsen scheinbar aus den Hochalmen und werden zu unvergleichlich schönen Fotomotiven. Almen spielen eine wichtige Rolle für die Landschaft und Landwirtschaft. Und das nicht erst seit kurzer Zeit. Almen entlasten die Bauernhöfe im Sommer, weil das Vieh auf die Almen geschickt wird, und somit dem Bauern im Tal mehr Zeit für die Erntearbeiten bleibt. Gleichzeitig wirkt sich die Alpung positiv auf die Tiergesundheit aus und nebenbei wird durch die Bewirtschaftung der Almen ein wichtiger Beitrag zum Landschaftsschutz geleistet. 34 Prozent der Landesfläche in Südtirol ist Almfläche. Dabei handelt es sich vorwiegend um Hochalmen, die oberhalb der Waldgrenze liegen. In etwa die Hälfte die Südtiroler Viehbestandes wird auf die Almen gebracht. Das allein beweist, wie wichtig die Almwirtschaft auch heute noch ist. Die größte Hochalm Südtirols ist die größte Hochalm Europas. Das ist die Seiser Alm, zwischen dem Grödnertal und dem Eisacktal gelegen. Dominiert wird die unendlich scheinende Alm von den Dolomiten: dem Schlernmassiv, den Rosszähnen, dem Lang- und Plattkofel. Auf der Seiser Alm, die mit einer modernen Umlaufseilbahn von Seis aus zu erreichen ist, stehen zahlreiche Almhütten. Freilich: viele dieser Hütten werden heute als Ferienhäuser für gestresste und erfolgreiche Manager genutzt. Wodurch der Reiz der Alm jedoch nicht geschmälert wird. Heute spielen Almen auch für den Fremdenverkehr und die Freizeitwirtschaft eine bedeutende Rolle: Die Almhütten sind zu Wirtschaften ausgebaut worden und laden zu mehr oder weniger traditionellen Almgerichten ein. Wanderungen auf den Almen sind beliebt: Vor allem für Familien und weniger geübte Wanderer sind sie geeignet, weil hier wenig Höhenunterschiede zu überwinden sind und weil praktisch nirgendwo die Gefahr besteht, abzustürzen.

In ogni regione montana gli alpeggi sono sinonimo di relax e piacere. Questo vale anche per l’Alto Adige ed in particolar modo nella zona delle Dolomiti dove le rocce che spiccano dagli altipiani regalano un panorama davvero unico, che raramente troviamo altrove. Gli alpeggi giocano da sempre un ruolo estremamente importante per il territorio e l’agricoltura. Semplificano il lavoro estivo nel maso poiché il bestiame viene mandato a pascolare sugli alpeggi ed il contadino ha più tempo da dedicare al raccolto. Da questo ne traggono beneficio anche la salute degli animali e l’ambiente stesso dell’alpeggio. Il 34% della superficie dell’Alto Adige è costituita da alpeggi, in prevalenza si tratta di altipiani posti al di sopra delle zone boschive. All’incirca la metà del bestiame altoatesino viene condotto sugli alpeggi. Questo dimostra quanto ancora oggi sia importante l’alpicoltura. L’Alpe di Siusi posta tra la Val Gardena e la Valle Isarco non è solo il più grande altipiano dell’Alto Adige, ma di tutta Europa. Questa distesa che ai nostri occhi appare infinita è dominata dalle Dolomiti: il Massiccio dello Sciliar, i Denti di Terrarossa, il Sassolungo e il Sasso Piatto. Numerose malghe sono dislocate sull’Alpe di Siusi, oggi raggiungibile tramite una moderna cabinovia che parte da Siusi. Molte di queste malghe vengono attualmente utilizzate come case vacanze da manager di successo stressati che cercano un po’ di riposo. Gli alpeggi giocano un ruolo di primo piano anche in campo turistico: le malghe sono fonte di entrata economica ed i turisti si fermano volentieri ad assaggiare specialità locali e non solo. Le famiglie e tutti coloro che amano escursioni non troppo impegnative prediligono una passeggiata sugli alpeggi anche grazie allo scarso dislivello e all’assenza di pericoli.

Wherever there are mountains, alpine pastures are synonymous with relaxation and pleasure. This is also true for South Tyrol and in particular in the Dolomites where the rocks jutting out of the plateau offer a panorama that is truly unique and rarely found elsewhere. The alpine pastures play a very important role for the territory and agriculture. They simplify the summer work in the maso (mountain farm) because the livestock are sent out to pasture and the farmer has more time to dedicate to the harvest. This is also beneficial for the health of the animals and for the pasture. 34% of the territory of South Tyrol is comprised of pastures, mostly on plateaus above the forested areas. Approximately half of the livestock is taken out to pasture, underlining the importance of the alpine pasture culture. The Alpe di Siusi is located between Val Gardena and the Isarco Valley and is not only the largest plateau in South Tyrol but in all of Europe. This expanse that extends as far as the eye can see is dominated by the Dolomites: the Massif of Sciliar, Denti di Terrarossa, Sassolungo and Sasso Piatto. Many malghe (mountain farms) are located on the Alpe di Siusi, today reachable via a modern cable car that departs from Siusi. Many of these malghe are used as vacation homes for successful managers that are stressed out and are looking for some peace and tranquillity. The pastures play a primary role in tourism: the malghe are a font of income and tourists enjoy stopping to taste local specialties and more. Families and all those who like easier hiking tours will find a trip in the pastures perfect because of its flat nature and its safety.

AUF DEN SPUREN ROMS – RADFAHREN IM VINSCHGAU SULLE TRACCE DI ROMA – CICLISMO IN VAL VENOSTA ON THE TRAIL OF THE ROMANS – CYCLING IN VAL VENOSTA

Sie hatten die Welt geprägt, wie kein anderes Volk vor ihnen, und den Grundstein für die moderne Zivilisation gelegt. Die Rede ist von den Römern, die ein Weltreich aufgebaut haben. Und deren Spuren sich in Südtirol herrlich erfahren lassen. Die Hauptverkahrsader zwischen Germanien und Italien verlief durch den Vinschgau und über den Reschenpass. Von Verona kommend nach Trient und Bozen führte die Via Claudia Augusta, vom göttlichen Kaiser selbst in Auftrag gegeben, weiter nach Meran und durch den Vinschgau bis nach Augsburg. Es lohnt sich, heute den Verlauf des antiken Datenhighways zu folgen – und auch das ist ganz physisch gemeint. Zufällig haben sich in Südtirol wunderbare Radwege genau dort durchgesetzt, wo einst die Römer reisten. Am Reschensee beginnt die Reise. Energie ist dem modernen Menschen so wichtig, dass die Heimat ganzer Gemeinschaften geopfert wurde. So geschehen in den 1950er Jahren, als das Dorf Graun geflutet wurde, um einen See anzulegen und Strom gewinnen zu können. Übrig vom Ort ist noch der alte Kirchturm, der wie ein Mahnmal aus den Fluten des Sees gen Himmel zeigt. Der obere Vinschgau ist alleine schon eine Reise wert und wer ihn mit dem Fahrrad durchfährt, wird sich entscheiden müssen, was von den vielen Sehenswürdigkeiten besucht werden soll. Einmal wäre die Gelegenheit, das Kloster Marienberg zu besichtigen, eine Benediktinerabtei aus dem 12. Jahrhundert. Oder das Dorf Mals, das auch als Siebenkirchen bezeichnet wird. Das 1.051 m hoch gelegene Dorf ist Hauptort im oberen Vinschgau. Grund hierfür: In Mals endet die Vinschgerbahnlinie, die Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts erbaut worden ist und einen wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung in das westliche Südtiroler Tal gebracht hat. Die

Stadt Glurns wird von der Vinschgerbahn nicht berührt und hat aus diesem Grund nicht am wirtschaftlichen Aufschwung partizipieren können. Dadurch hat die Stadt ihr historisches Gesicht bewahrt. Die kleinste Stadt Südtirols ist komplett von einer intakten Stadtmauer umgeben. Der Bahnhof für Glurns ist in Schluderns, ca. 2 km von der Stadt entfernt. Schluderns ist aber wegen der Churburg bekannt. Die Burg aus dem 13. Jahrhundert enthält die weltweit größte private Rüstkammer. Weiter geht die Radreise Richtung Prad. In Prad werden die ambitionierten Radfahrer ihre Freude haben, denn hier ist der Ausgangspunkt für eine Tour auf den höchsten durch eine Straße erschlossenen Pass Italiens: das Stilfser Joch (2.757 m). Der Höhenunterschied mit einer durchschnittlichen Steigung von 9% wird über 48 Spitzkehren bewältigt. Das Stilfser Joch ist ein Muss-Abstecher für jeden ambitionierten Hobbyradler. Wer weiter gemütlich an der Talsohle entlangfährt, kommt nach Laas, ein Dorf, das durch seinen Marmor weltberühmt geworden ist. Ausgangsmaterial von Marmor ist Kalkgestein, das unter Hitze und Druck umgewandelt wird. Neben dem Marmor hat der Vinschgau einen weiteren Exportschlager zu bieten: Die Marille (Aprikose), die seit Jahrhunderten im Tal kultiviert und seit einigen Jahrzehnten neu entdeckt und verstärkt vermarktet wird. Letzte Station auf dem Radweg ist Naturns, ein großes Dorf, das vor allem touristisch geprägt ist. In Naturns besonders sehenswert auf unserer „Römerreise“ ist die Prokuluskirche am Dorfeingang, eine altromanische Kirche, die auf den Fundamenten eines spätantiken Hauses aufgebaut worden ist. Die Kirche entstand in der ersten Hälfte des 7. Jahrhunderts und ist damit wenigstens 1.350 Jahre alt.

Stiamo parlando dei Romani, che hanno costruito un impero mondiale, e le cui tracce sono straordinariamente percorribili in Alto Adige. L’arteria principale del traffico tra Germania e Italia passava per la Val Venosta, e attraversava il passo Resia. Arrivando da Verona, verso Trento e Bolzano, la Via Claudia Augusta portava, come da ordine del divino imperatore, verso Merano e attraverso la Val Venosta fino ad Asburgo. A oggi vale la pena di percorrere le antiche strade. Per caso, in Alto Adige si sono sviluppate meravigliose piste ciclabili, proprio dove una volta viaggiavano i romani. Il nostro viaggio parte dal lago di Resia. L’energia è una caratteristica importante per l’uomo moderno, che ha sacrificato le case d’intere popolazioni. Questo è successo nel 1950, quando hanno allagato il paese Curon, per creare laghi e poter fornire elettricità. Di questo villaggio è rimasto il vecchio campanile, che sorge dalle acque come un monumento che guarda verso il cielo. Vale la pena di essere visitata, anche la parte superiore della Val Venosta. Chi la percorre con una bicicletta dovrà decidere cosa vedere delle tante attrazioni. Si potrebbe cogliere l’occasione e visitare il convento Marienberg, anche chiamato Montemaria, un’abazia benedettina del 12° secolo. Oppure il paesino di Malles, anche chiamato “sette chiese”. Questo paese si trova a 1.051 m di altezza ed è capoluogo della parte superiore della Val Venosta. Il motivo è che la linea ferroviaria della valle, costruita nel 19° secolo, rappresentava una svolta commerciale a ovest della valle altoatesina e

terminava proprio li. La cittadina di Glorenza non è stata toccata dalla ferrovia, e per questo motivo non ha potuto partecipare al recupero economico. Ha causa di questa mancanza, Glorenza ha mantenuto il proprio carattere storico. La più piccola città dell’Alto Adige è completamente circondata da una muraglia intatta. La fermata per Glorenza è a Silandro, a ca. 2 km dalla città. A Sluderno si trova il Castel Coira. Un castello costruito nel 13° scecolo, che contiene la più grande armeria mondiale. Il viaggio in bicicletta prosegue poi verso Prato. Qui i ciclisti ambiziosi proveranno un grande piacere, poiché qui si trova il punto di partenza per il passo più alto d‘Italia: passo Stelvio (2.757 m). Il dislivello, con una pendenza media del 9%, è caratterizzato da 48 tornati appuntiti. Passo Stelvio è un obbligo per tutti gli appassionati ciclisti amatoriali. Chi prosegue tranquillamente per la pianura della valle arriva a Lasa, un paesino divenuto famoso a livello mondiale per il suo marmo. Materiale di partenza per il marmo è la calce, che attraverso il calore e la pressione viene trasformata. Oltre al marmo la Val Venosta ha anche un alto successo d’esporto da offrire: le albicocche. Da diversi secoli vengono coltivate nella valle e da alcuni decenni sono state riscoperte e rafforzate sul mercato. L’ultima tappa del nostro “viaggio dei romani” è la pista ciclabile che prosegue per Naturno, un grande paese con una forte affluenza turistica. Qui bisogna assolutamente visitare la chiesa di San Procolo alle porte del paese. È una vecchia chiesa romanica di 1.350 anni costruita sui fondamenti di un’antica casa costruita nella prima metà del 7° secolo.

They made their mark in the world like no other population before them and set the basis for modern civilization. We are referring to the Romans, who constructed a world empire and whose legacy can be clearly traced in South Tyrol. The main artery of traffic between Germany and Italy passed through Val Venosta, and crossed the Resia pass. Arriving in Verona, towards Trento and Bolzano, the Via Claudia Augusta brought travellers, as ordained by the divine emperor, towards Merano and across the Val Venosta all the way to Hapsburg. Today you can still walk the same road. On bicycle in South Tyrol there are wonderful bike paths where you can travel the same roads the ancient Roans walked. Our trip starts from the Lake Resia. A source of energy is important for the modern man, and they sacrificed the houses of an entire population for this cause. This occurred in 1950, when they flooded the town of Curon to create lakes and to generate electricity. Of this village, the only remnant is a tower that rises from the lake like a haunting monument pointing to the sky. The upper part of Val Venosta is worth a visit as well. If you go up by bike you will be spoilt for choice from the many attractions here. You could take this chance to visit the Marienberg convent, also called Montemaria, a Benedictine abbey from the 12th century. Or the little village of Malles, also called “sette chiese” (seven churches). This town is found at 1.051 m altitude and is the capital of the upper part of Val Venosta, because the train line of the valley, constructed in the 19th century, created a huge change in commerce west of the South

Tyrolean valley and the route ended there. The village of Glorenza was not reached by the rail line, so it was not able to profit from the economic upturn. Because of this, Glorenza maintained its own historical character . The smallest city in South Tyrol is surrounded by a wall that remains completely intact. The stop for Glorenza is at Silandro, about 2 km from the city . At Sluderno there is the Coira Castle, constructed in the 13th century housing the largest armoury in the world. The cycling trip proceeds towards Prato. Here ambitious cyclists will find a great challenge because this is the starting point for the highest pass in Italy: Stelvio pass. (2.757 m). The difference in altitude with a median gradient of 9%, has 48 switchbacks. Passo Stelvio Pass is a must for those passionate about amateur cycling. Those who want to proceed at a leisurely pace through the lowlands will reach Lasa, a little town that gained world fame for its marble. The base material for marble is lime that through heat and pressure is transformed. In addition to marble Val Venosta also has another important export: apricots. For many centuries they were cultivated in the valleys and in the last two decades they have been rediscovered and promoted in the market. The last stop on our “voyage of the Romans ” is the cycling path that proceeds for Naturno, a large town with a high tourist flow. Here, an absolute must-see is the church of St. Procolo at the entrance to the town. It is an old Romanic church over 1,350 years old constructed on the remnants of an earlier church built in the first half of the 7th century.

WEINMEKKA IM SÜDEN SÜDTIROLS LA MECCA DEL VINO NEL SUD DELL’ALTO ADIGE THE WINE MECCA IN DEEP SOUTH TYROL Im Überetsch hat der Weinanbau eine lange Tradition, die durch kontinuierliche Innovation in den Bereichen Qualitätsmanagement und Sortenvielfalt bis heute glänzen konnte. Das beinah mediterrane Klima mit rund 2.000 Sonnenstunden im Jahr, spiegelt sich in den Überetscher Weinen mit hoher Qualität und Vielfalt wider. Eine Entdeckungsreise entlang der Südtiroler Weinstraße ist daher für Weinliebhaber ein Muss. Inmitten von Weinreben und Apfelbäumen schlummert der Kalterer See. Die gleichnamige Marktgemeinde Kaltern ist der bekannteste Weinort Südtirols, nicht zuletzt, weil hier der „Kalterersee“ entsteht, ein traditioneller Vernatsch-Wein. Die warme Lage bietet hier die besten Bedingungen für die roten Rebsorten Cabernet Sauvignon, Blauburgunder und Merlot. In höher gelegenen Gebieten werden hingegen die weißen Weinsorten Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Ruländer und Weißburgunder angebaut. Diesen Reben entspringen weitere aromatische Weine, wie der Gewürztraminer und der Goldmuskateller. Eine Besonderheit ist der Rosenmuskateller, aus dem ein seltener, feiner Süßwein hergestellt wird. Fährt man nun entlang der malerischen Weinstraße Richtung Bozen, gelangt man nach Eppan, wo ungefähr 20 Prozent der gesamten Südtiroler Weine auf der größten zusammenhängenden Anbaufläche produziert wird. Die unterschiedliche und variantenreiche Lage der verschiedenen Fraktionen Eppans, wie z.B. St. Michael und Girlan, macht den Anbau der diversen Weinsorten möglich. Der Wein, der über den Hügeln der ältesten Weinstraße Italiens produziert wird, beweist hohe Qualität. Das lebendige Aroma der Weißen und die ausdrucksstarken roten Weine sorgen für Genussfreuden bei der Entdeckung des Weinlandes Südtirol. Nella zona dell’Oltradige la viticoltura ha una lunga tradizione, caratterizzata da uno spirito d’innovazione sia nella qualità, sia nella varietà dei vitigni, grazie anche al clima mediterraneo tipico di questa zona che garantisce 2.000 ore di sole all’anno. Gli amanti del vino non possono trascurare un delizioso viaggio lungo la famosa Strada del Vino altoatesina. I vitigni e gli alberi di mele si rispecchiano nel bellissimo Lago di Caldaro, il cui paese omonimo è il comune vinicolo altoatesino più conosciuto e deve questa sua fama alla tradizionale produzione della Schiava. Il caldo clima offre le condizioni ottimali per far maturare rigogliosi i vini rossi quali il Cabernet Sauvignon,

il Pinot Nero e il Merlot. Sui versanti più alti si coltivano invece gli eccellenti bianchi quali lo Chardonnay, il Sauvignon Blanc, il Pinot Grigio e il Weißburgunder. Questi vitigni favoriscono inoltre la produzione di altri vini aromatici quali il Gewürztraminer o il Moscato Giallo. Molto particolare è invece il Moscato Rosa, una varietà dolcissima che raramente viene coltivata, in quanto la sua rendita è incerta di anno in anno. Procedendo lungo la pittoresca Strada del Vino in direzione Bolzano si giunge ad Appiano, dove viene coltivato circa il 20% dell’intera produzione vinicola altoatesina. La posizione differente delle diverse frazioni di Appiano, come ad esempio S.Michele e Cornaiano consentono la coltivazione di diverse qualità di uva. Il vino che viene coltivato sulle colline delimitate dalla Strada del Vino più antica d’Italia è sinonimo di alta qualità. L’aroma vivace dei bianchi e la buona qualità delle viti rosse dell’Alto Adige trovano appassionati in tutto il mondo. Winemaking in the Oltradige area has a long tradition, marked by a spirit of innovation, both in quality and in the variety of grapes, thanks to the typical Mediterranean climate of this area offering 2,000 hours of sunshine a year. Wine lovers shouldn't miss a delightful journey along the famous Wine Route in South Tyrol. Vineyards and apple orchards reflect in beautiful Lake Caldaro, whose eponymous village in South Tyrol is best known for its wine and owes its fame to the traditional production of Schiava. The warm climate offers ideal conditions to mature lush red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and Merlot. On higher slopes there are excellent whites such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Weißburgunder. These vineyards also produce other aromatic wines such as Gewürztraminer and Moscato Giallo. The Moscato Rosa, a sweet variety that is rarely cultivated, is very special because its yield is uncertain from year to year. Proceeding along the picturesque Wine Route towards Bolzano, we reach Appiano, where about 20% of the entire wine production in South Tyrol is grown. The different solar exposures of the villages under the Comune of Appiano, such as San Michele and Cornaiano, allow the cultivation of many different grape varieties. The wine grown on the hills bordered by the oldest wine route of Italy is synonymous with high quality. BOZNER WEINKOST MOSTRA VINI DI BOLZANO WINE EXHIBITION “BOZNER WEINKOST” 18. – 20.05.2012 Bei dieser Veranstaltung werden im Merkantilmuseum Spitzenweine, die Jahresende auf den Markt kommen, vorgestellt. Die Verkostungen der verschiedenen Leitsorten der neuen Jahrgänge werden hingegen im Parkhotel Laurin stattfinden. Hier findet am Freitag, 18. Mai die Südtiroler Wineparty, sowie am Sonntag, 20. Mai das Südtiroler Sektfrühstück statt. Durante questa manifestazione che si terrà presso il Museo Mercantile verranno presentati in anteprima i vini di punta che verranno introdotti sul mercato entro la fine dell’anno. Dall’altro lato il Parkhotel Laurin offrirà in entrambi i giorni la cornice ideale per la degustazione e per il Wineparty Alto Adige che si terrà la sera di venerdì 18 maggio. Das Mittelalter hält Einzug am Fuße der größten Hochalm Europas. Ein sportliches Ereignis, das man in der Ferienregion Seiser Alm am ersten Juni-Wochenende erleben kann. Mutige Reiter zeigen in vier Turnieren Geschick und Ausdauer. Heuer findet diese Mischung aus Wettkampf, Volksfest und Historienspiel, in den drei Dörfern Kastelruth, Seis und Völs am Schlern bereits zum 30. Mal statt. Der Ritt wird zu Ehren des legendären Südtiroler Ritters und Minnesängers Oswald von Wolkenstein veranstaltet, und gilt als die größte Reitveranstaltung Südtirols. Il Medioevo entra in scena ai piedi dell’altipiano più grande d’Europa. Un evento sportivo che si terrà all’Alpe di Siusi il primo fine settimana di giugno e che vede coinvolte le località di Castelrotto, Siusi e Laghetto di Fiè. Destrezza e abilità, sono le qualità necessarie

per affrontare i quattro tornei. Si tratta di una vera e propria festa di popolo nella quale confluiscono molti elementi diversi: la storia, l'arte, l'amore per i cavalli e la passione per le sfide. Das härteste Mountainbikerennen der Dolomiten findet heuer am 07. Juli zum 18. Mal statt. Wie gewohnt starten die Biker in Niederdorf, und setzen es entlang der wunderbaren Bergwelt der fünf Gemeinden des Hochpustertals fort. Die Besonderheit dieses Rennens ist die Tatsache, dass die Teilnehmer erst während des Rennens entscheiden müssen, welche Distanz sie bewältigen möchten. Hierbei handelt es sich um das größte Mountainbikerennen mit einem Streckenprofil, das es in sich hat. La più ardua gara di MTB si terrà quest’anno per la 18a volta

il 07 luglio. I biker partiranno da Villabassa e attraverseranno i meravigliosi paesaggi montani dei 5 comuni dell’Alta Pusteria. Peculiarità di questa gara è che i concorrenti hanno la possibilità di scegliere solo durante la gara tra due tracciati con due distanze diverse. Si tratta della più grande manifestazione MTB. The event, which is renowned for its arduousness, attracts more competitors than any other event of its kind in Italy and expects to see up to 3,500 participants. Entrants can choose between two distances, 119.9 and 56.9 kilometres.
