Amara & MTN to invest USD 1.5 billion for operator Mizzima News:Yangon Amara Communications Ltd and Africa-based MTN Telecommunication Company will cooperate together and invest USD 1.5 billion if they win the bid for two places of mobile operator launched by Myanmar Post and Telecommunication, said Daw Aye Mya Mya Kyi, General Manager of Amara Communications Ltd. "The investment will be made during the long term period: 10-year or 15-year period. The investment proportion of our two companies will be realized after winning the tender," she said. At present, altogether 12 companies are included in the tender list and the participants will have to submit the final proposal as of 3rd June for the third and the final stage of selection. Myanmar Communication Scrutiny Board pressed that the two winning companies will be announced on 27 th June. As the Telecommunications Bill of Myanmar is not still promulgated, Ministries are collaboratively carrying tasks based on the existing one, said Mr. Serame Taukoboung. He added, "We will abide by the rules and laws of the country while paying respect to Human Rights according to the law. We also follow the International Law while abiding local law of a particular country. We are a business-based company. There is nothing to do with Chrony." Daw Aye Mya Mya Kyi explained that as there is no telecommunication law in Myanmar, both local and foreign telecommunication operators have to refer to the existing laws. As the two winning companies can operate the telecommunication work nationwide, Amara aims to provide sim card to the public free of charge. MTN Telecommunication company is now operating in 22 countries in South Africa and Middle East, providing services to 195 million people.
South Africa-based MTN to assist Myanmar for other sectors if it wins telecommunication tender Eleven Daily : Yangon South Africa-based MTN company, which is now attempting to win telecommunication tender for Myanmar, will provide assistance for development of other sectors including telecommunication sector if they win the bid, said Mr. Taukobong, Chief Marketing Officer of MTN at a press conference held on 20 th May 2013. MTN is a foreign company cooperating with Amara Communication Company, owned by U Nay Aung, in applying the tender for local telecommunication industry and it will provide assistance to sectors like education additionally. MTN is one of the 12 companies applying for the telecommunication license and it is projected to apply the technology for the development of Myanmar's telecommunication sector, education sector, social and other sectors. MTN is well-known for its telecommunication services in 22 countries including South Africa. The press conference revealed that as the current situation of Myanmar telecommunication industry is quite similar to that of South Africa five years ago, MTN which has many experiences in operating in telecommunication sector of developing countries, will transform the country's ICT sector rapidly if they win the license. It also stated that MTN will provide 3G and Wi Fi services mainly with paying bill through mobile phone. The investment amount will depend on the project and infrastructure will be constructed after negotiating with the relevant ministries. Most of the foreign –based telecommunication operators are attracting to win the operator license with assistance and contributions to Myanmar as marketing means. Companies which are applying for the operator license will submit a report including their services and investment as of 3rd June and the two foreign companies will be eventually selected on 27 th June.

MTN Group to meet local media Trade Times : Yangon 12 companies shortlisted for two telecoms licences for Myanmar are holding press conferences to give information on tasks to be carried out locally to the public through media. South Africa-based MTN Group will meet with press at 10 am, on 20th May at Chatrium Hotel and Mr. Serame Taukobong, Chief Marketing Officer and member of Executive Committee of MTN South Africa will explain their operation process. MTN entered South Africa as the second mobile phone network and gained official license in 1998. As of in 2013, it has 195 million consumers. At present, MTN is providing telecommunication services to 22 countries in Africa and Middle East. MTN is bidding for the telecommunication operator license in cooperation with Amara Communications which is also collaborating with Myanmar Post and Telecommunication for mutual interest. The shortlist includes MTN Group, three other local companies in joint venture with foreign companies; local Kambawza Company and Myanmar Telephone Company Limited in cooperation with Singapore-based Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel); KDDI Corporation and Sumitomo Corporation from Japan with MICTDC and A1 Construction. Out of 91 candidates, 12 companies were named in the shortlist announced on 11th April and they have to submit the detailed proposals to the tender selection board as of 3th June. The two selected companies will be announced on 27th June. Two local companies and two foreign companies will be given permission as mobile operators. Out of the 12 shortlisted names, two foreign companies will be selected as foreign mobile operators. Myanmar Post and Telecommunication and Yadanarpon Teleport (the public company which was formed with local entrepreneurs) will run as the two local mobile operators.
Competition for the two communication operators 7 Day Daily : Yangon International companies are competing to win more marks from the consultants, hired by the Myanmar government, in bidding for the two communication operator licences for Myanmar. Telecom tender selection board chose 12 foreign companies for the two telecommunication operator licences and the two final winners will be announced on 27th June. The 12 shortlisted companies include globally well-known companies like Digicel, Vodafone, Singtel, MTN and Telenor Group. Furthermore, the list also includes several groups like collaborated group of Airtel Consortium, Malaysiabased Axiata, France Telecom, Orange and famous Japanese companies; Marubeni, a group of KDDI corporation, Sumitomo corporation with local companies like MICTDC and A1 Construction; a group of Millicom International from Luxemburg, Qtel from Qarter, Singapore Telecommunications (Singtel) with local companies like Kambawza and Myanmar Telephone Company Limited; and Viettel Group. Myanmar government hired Munich -based Roland Berger International Market Strategy Consultant Company, from Germany, for selection of the successful applicant. At a press conference held in Yangon, executives for Singapore office of Roland Berger Company said they will give 1000 marks for technology qualification and 500 marks for financial security. Those selected ones are permitted to run operations for 15 years with additional extension period for 10 years. They need to run the operation and start providing services within nine-month period after issuing the licence. In accordance with the agreement, the operator must provide, within one year, both voice service and data-transferring service nationwide, particularly one fourth of the country's area. Apart from the two selected operators, the government-owned Myanma Post and Telecommunications (MPT) and Yadanarpon Teleport will also provide such services. Those in the shortlist are now advertising their logos in TV channels, newspapers and journals as well as online media whereas some are taking media persons to their headquarters for further explanation. Mr. Ola Jo Tandre, Director of Corporate Responsibility of Telenor Group, based in Oslo, Norway said "If we have a chance to operate here in Myanmar, we will contribute both for the mobile services and socioeconomic development of local community for the interest of the local people" Other prominent mobile operators like Vodafone and China Mobile also said mobile communication will bring rapid development to socio-economic interests of the local community and they will provide service with the world class mobile technology. "If we win the bid, we will provide perfect and quality telecommunication services to all the 60-million population of Myanmar. We will substitute the old outdated technology with the modern one while creating more job opportunities for the local community. Our communication technology will be the latest and world class with the super-fast data transfer," said Mr. Serame Taukobong, Executive and Chief Marketing Officer of MTN.
