AN OASIS IN THE CLOUDS The 65-year-old beloved ski resort in South America is still a long-time favorite.
It all started in 1961, when Henry Purcell, a recent graduate in hospitality from Cornell University in New York, arrived in Chile. His uncle, Bob Purcell, along with his business partner, Dick Aldrich, had just bought Portillo at a Chilean government auction and was looking for someone to take care of the hotel. In what would be the greatest adventure of his life, Henry moved to South America with the whole family, determined to transform that corner of the Andes into one of the most renowned ski resorts in the world. A high-quality team began giving lessons at the ski school, lifts were installed, slopes were opened and in 1966, Portillo hosted a world-wide ski event. In the following years, Henry bought the ski resort and his son, Miguel, took over its

administration. However, the mission remained

the same: to offer a unique experience amidst the Chilean mountains. Portillo has embodied this spirit and with it, continues to write its story.

SKIING A true playground in the snow, the ski resort has perfect descents for all levels of skiers. With 2500 feet of maximum vertical gradient, 295 days of sunshine per year, 13 lifts and an average of 25 feet of snow each winter, Portillo has 34 perfect runs for beginners as well as experts. Those who are new to skiing can take classes at the local ski school and take their first glides along the wide, unpaved run operated by Magic Carpet, a treadmill that replaces the lift. It is also there that children learn to ski, then just go back up the mountain. There are seven beginner runs, among them, the favorite Las Lomas, with a gorgeous view of the lagoon. For those who have a bit of experience, there are six other incredible runs, including the famous Juncalillo. Experts are more than welcome in Portillo as well, which usually hosts professional teams from all over the world when it is summer in the Northern Hemisphere. More advanced skiers aim to explore Roca Jack and three other descents that have already become famous in the world of skiing: Condor, Garganta, and El Caracara. In addition, powder snow is easily accessible with daily heli-skiing trips to the most unexplored areas, bringing even more excitement to the mountain.

HELI-SKI Heli-ski fans get ready to experience the thrill of skiing along virgin snow on otherwise inaccessible areas.
To reach the pristine snow… This is one of the greatest desires a skier or snowboarder can have, but reaching it can be a challenge, especially when there are no lifts that will take you up. Early risers are the first to experience the powder snow. Many also want to try something new, so why not venture into unmarked areas? In the Portillo region, this type of terrain is plentiful and offers distinctive challenges for skiers. The best way to reach these areas is by helicopter. Skiers are dropped off at areas, previously chosen by experts in the region, which correspond to the skill level – from advanced to expert – for those who seek the unique thrill of a lifetime.
22
PORTILLO KIDS The family atmosphere of Portillo allows children to freely playing in the snow and at the hotel.
There are numerous activities the little ones can partake in Portillo, including ski lessons, cooking, diving in the heated pool, hot chocolate, and enjoying the game room. The routine is lively: Mornings begin with ski lessons taught by experienced instructors. In the late afternoon, children partake in the après-ski, especially designed for them, with activities at the sports court or a swim at the outdoor heated pool. With freedom to have fun and explore safely, children see Portillo as the perfect place to spend a snow holiday.

Where to eat? Chilean and international classics in the restaurant, sushi in the bar, barbecue in the middle of the slopes… The choice is yours. Seafood from the Pacific Ocean, good pasta, and creative Chilean recipes are just some of the options. The hotel's main restaurant serves exquisite meals accompanied by fine wines. Want a change of scenery? During the day, Tío Bob's is the official stop in the middle of the slopes. The hotel’s bar serves good sushi and dishes that are perfect for winter.
Bar Portillo Wood, leather, fireplace, low lighting, and even tasty alternatives for dining. You can book a Japanese dinner at the bar (the menu includes delicious sashimis, temakis, and rolls) or a delicious fondue accompanied by good wines and drinks. Then, a live band adds to the lively vibe with classic rock from the 80s and 90s.
26
Hotel Portillo The hotel’s restaurant welcomes guests for breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner with traditional Chilean dishes, as well as light alternatives and options for children. Menus may include recipes such as crab (a kind of giant Pacific crab) with avocado slices and cheese ravioli with walnuts. The service is always top-notch: the waiters make the restaurant the heart of the hotel, under the leadership of the iconic maitre’d, Don Juan.
Cheers The resort's wine cellar is special and features over 150 different white, red and sparkling wines. The main focus is the Chilean producers, but there are also Argentine wines, including wines from other countries. Awardwinning brands include Alma

Viva, Clos Apalta, Chadwick, and Don Melchor.
The view of the Laguna del Inca makes any meal here mandatory. Choose a sunny day and enjoy a barbecue or hamburger. To head back, you need to go down intermediate runs, but do not worry if you are not at that level quite yet. From Monday to Friday, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., you can go up and down the lift without skis on your feet. • SKIUSA.COM • + 1 884 531-0960

HELI-SKI Heli-skiing is the perfect option for those who wish to explore the vast, untouched regions in Valle Nevado.
In Valle Nevado, heli-ski – which is the practice of skiing and snowboarding in areas only accessible by helicopter – is a tradition that began in 1988. Athletes had become fascinated with the peaks of the more than 13 thousand feet of the snow-covered Andes Mountain Range. Although the adrenaline rush is high – just the sound of the helicopter and view of the mountains are breathtaking – everything is done with the utmost care. The focus is safety. Instructors are experienced and are able to anticipate the conditions that the participants will encounter. In addition, specialized companies offer the special equipment used for heliski. Following the safety brief, participants will board the helicopter with confidence as they prepare to experience skiing on untouched snow.
40
VALLE NEVADO KIDS For children, Valle Nevado is the snowy version of an amusement park
The ski resort offers a number of tailor-made activities for the little ones. Children can learn techniques at the Kids Club, the ski and snowboard school for children ages four to 11 years old. In class, they will learn to adapt to the equipment, develop proper posture, make curves, and how to slowly make a full stop in the snow. After mastering those first steps, they will train on the Magic Carpet until they gain enough confidence to go on the slopes. In addition to snow activities, the resort has a Kids Zone, a supervised area that entertains kids with fun activities, workshops, and even a 3D movie theater. In addition to card games and bingo rooms, there may be special activities, such as magic shows or costume parties – making sure the holidays in the snow are unforgettable.

A VIBRANT MOUNTAIN The soft snowcovered slopes is what draws skiers to this volcano region, while the hot springs help muscles recover after experiencing sensational descents amidst the absolutely magnificent landscape.
52
Chillán is a winter destination known for its native, picturesque woods and stylish mountain accommodations. The real charm, however, lies in Chillán, the name of two volcanoes in the region, and the hot springs, which add a unique touch to the ski resort. The ski slopes themselves deserve special attention: there are over 22 miles of runs, including Tres Marias, the most extensive in the Southern Hemisphere with 8 miles of descents and incredible views of the region. The resort has a structure that includes nine lifts, 28 runs of different levels, a snowpark, and a large backcountry area for freeride enthusiasts to enjoy.

The versatility of the terrain also led to the creation of a ski school with 45 instructors capable of teaching in eight different languages. In addition to training new skiers, the team has the expertise to help skiers and snowboarders of all levels improve their performance. • SKIUSA.COM • + 1 884 531-0960

THE FORCE OF NATURE IN THE ANDES The spectacular view of the top of the Lonquimay volcano, dry snow and perfect slopes make Corralco the ideal place for those who want to ski amidst natural beauty. A ski resort that thrives on the quality of the snow, the beautiful scenery, the long ski season, and the high-quality backcountry skiing. The Corralco Mountain & Ski Resort is located in a privileged area of the Andes within the Malalcahuello National Reserve, and at the foot of the Lonquimay volcano in a region further south of the Cordillera, which allows for longer seasons and great snowfall – about 29 feet per year. All the runs are above the tree line, which allows for great visibility. The volcano’s slope and gravel terrain make the backcountry areas “smoother” and safer to ski on. While the resort is still relatively unknown to the general public (making the runs and lifts less crowded), Corralco has become a haven for those adamant about skiing.

SKIING Corralco is one of those places that make us want to wake up early to make the most of the day on the mountain. Located in the southernmost part of the Andes, the resort is in an area with few lakes, which makes the snow drier and lighter. The top of the mountain is 7,546 feet above sea level and the slopes have been formed on the sides of the Lonquimay volcano, in the area above the tree line. This means excellent angles for runs and about 2,822 feet of different levels. With a wide variety of runs and lifts, the resort is much larger than it looks because its skiable terrain is more than 4,448 acres and includes the safe, backcountry skiing area. To meet the desires of skiers and snowboarders of all levels, the ski school also offers freeride, freestyle, and racing classes.
