by Amy Williams, co-owner of the Zonolite neighborhood’s newest creative space at 1174 Zonolite Place.

With three new fitness businesses, the Zonolite neighborhood is becoming a haven for physical fitness.

xpress yourself at Zone of Light Studio, where the imagination rules! Owners Amy Wilson and Beth Deery want you to get in touch with your creative soul through classes for children and adults. Drop off your children for Kids Craft Friday nights or join us Adult Saturday Nights at the Zone. Creativity and fun are all that is required at Zone of Light Studio! Our camps and programs are incredible and diverse. All instructors are certified teachers or artists that encourage success throughout the learning process.

hanks to Studio Lotus, Zonolite has always been a place where neighbors could enjoy a great workout. Studio Lotus’ Pilates packages, Mat and Tower classes, kettlebell training and nutrition consulting have rightly earned them the title of Atlanta’s #1 Pilates Studio. Now their success seems to have rubbed off on the rest of the hood. Three new fitness businesses have recently opened on Zonolite. Serious cyclists and triathletes will love Energy Lab at 1167A Zonolite Place, which offers power-based cycling classes, triathlon and endurance coaching and group swim lessons. At 1228 Zonolite Road, personal trainer Ashley Thomas Hall has opened Polaris Performance Training, a gym with monthly memberships and personal training services. At 1185 Zonolite Road, Keith Walker brings Crossfit Identity to Zonolite. Crossfit workouts focus on functional movements like Olympic lifting, squats, box jumps, jump rope, pull-ups, rowing (and more!) performed at high intensities. Learn more at crossfitidentity.com, energylabatl.com, studiolotus.com and Polaris: (678) 777-6827.

Think of our space as the blank canvas for your next party or team building event. Sign up for a class to take with your child, or simply for your child to experience independent from you. Check out our offerings at zoneoflightstudio.com, email awilson@ zoneoflightstudio.com or call (678) 948-8059. Our Adult Only opening event is March 16th—come check us out! We hope to see you at the ZONE.

fter many long months (okay, years!) of preparation and hard work, Dekalb County is finally processing the permit that will enable the completion of an informational trailhead, permanent gravel trails and wayfinding signage throughout Zonolite Park. The permit will also allow minor grading and infrastructure work for the proposed Nickel Bottom Community Garden. On Friday April 5th, as part of FloatAway’s First Friday event, Nickel Bottom will host a “Twilight Tour” of the garden followed by a champagne toast and a short presentation. This short little luminary-lit tour will gather at the mulch path behind 1123 Zonolite at around 7pm. The tour is a $5 suggested donation and all proceeds will benefit Nickel Bottom Garden.

Floataway: a flexible workplace

Impromptu singalongs in Nickel Bottom Garden, weekly Beer:30 celebrations and calethenics in the parking lot at 1123 Zonolite: It’s how we roll. By Gerlinda Grimes

A

s 2013 unfolds into spring, the denizens of FloatAway venture out into the sunshine, break out the beer and crank up the tunes. A group from Floyd County (1123 Zonolite #23 & #24) file out into the parking lot almost every day around 4pm to do calisthenics or toss a football in the parking lot. Another office occasionally treats its whole crew to nosh from a food truck. The braintrust at Brandshake Creative (1145 Zonolite #5) crack open a six-pack around 4:30pm (sometimes 3:30 ... okay, okay, 1:30) most Friday afternoons, celebrating what they fondly call “Beer:30”. Neighbors from FirstPost and the Love & Light Center have been known drop by. They crank up the tunes, throw open their doors and the whole office takes a much-needed break from solving the web design and marketing problems of the world. I personally enjoy the occasional “5 Minute Meeting” with Rama Roy from Brandshake Creative. We’ll meet on the bridge at Nickel Bottom Garden and break shamelessly into song. So far, we’ve explored Michelle Shocked (Anchorage, 500 Miles), The Smiths (Girlfriend in a Coma) and Stevie Nicks (Leather & Lace). You’d be

amazed what 5 minutes of full-throated singing will do for productivity levels! I always come back from these meetings grinning from ear to ear and feeling curiously refreshed. These types of unconventional company activities are what makes it so cool to work in a community like FloatAway. And believe it or not, more and more studies show that allowing employees a bit more freedom may actually improve their sleep quality, reduce stress levels and improve productivity. Tech companies like Dropbox and Google provide free meals, snacks and games for their employees. Ask.com doesn’t even track vacation time! As long as employees get their work done, employees are free to take off as much time as they like. But don’t take my word for it. Read all about the benefits of a flexible workplace at the American Sociological Association: asanet.org/press/flexible_workplaces_promote_better_health_and_wellbeing.cfm. FloatAway is a great place for employers seeking to provide a flexible work environment. To inquire about available space, email drooks@tuckermott.com.

Wit and wisdom by property manager Jan McCurry’s emotionally evolved alter ego “Boi.”

M

y boss, your landlord, Michael Phillips is a man with a plan. He took a long, hard look at the coworking trend (flexible office space rented by the day or the hour) and decided that, though coworking wasn’t quite right for FloatAway, we could still benefit from the idea of smaller, more flexible space. After several inquries for smaller office spaces, we moved forward and converted 1123 #8, a large original shell space, into four small “pocket suites”. We aren’t even finished with the buildout, and we’ve already rented

two of the four spaces. The pocket suites are each between 500 and 600 square-feet with skylights, functioning windows, plenty of natural light, a shared hall, two exits and a dedicated common area bathroom. Each space has a water tap in case tenants want to add a sink or kitchenette. We’ll paint to suit, and the concrete floors will be polished and sealed. If this experiment with smaller office space is successful, we plan to add some additional pocket suites at 1075 Zonolite Road. Email Donna Rooks (drooks@tuckermott.com) for more information.
