BOi TIPS
D A T E
Wit and wisdom by property manager Jan McCurry’s emotionally evolved alter ego “Boi.” This quarters column focuses on Floataway’s slithering scaremaker, the snake.
S
o the other day, I had just pinched open the bag of Zapp’s I’d just purchased from Z Café. I reached for a chip with one hand and idly clicked open my email with the other, when OMG!! OMG!! OMG!! SNAKES!! SNAKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I mean, chips went flying everywhere people. I scared my little dog Milli so bad that she wheedled on the carpet. I may have actually wheedled a little tiny bit myself, but anyway—you get the point. I don’t like snakes any more than you do. They are creepy and slithery and I’d just as soon never see another photo of one again, much less encounter one in person. Sadly, Georgia is an ideal habitat for snakes. And Zonolite Park, being in a flood plain, is chock full of all the things snakes need to thrive. We may not like it! But those are the facts. There are a couple things I, as your property manager, have done to help the snake situation. First, I’ve posted signs along Floataway Creek, making it clear that there are snakes in the area. Second, we’ve hired our pest control company to spray “SnakeAway” snake repellent along the mulch path. This is 70% effective in deterring snakes; however, we are told that there is no way to completely eliminate the nasty things. So, here’s what you can do to keep yourselves safe: • • • • •
Leash your pets!! If you see a snake, give it a WIDE berth. Make noise when you walk. Be aware of where you step Keep in mind that snakes are more prevalent between March and September, and they’re more often on the move at dawn or dusk.
For more info on what to do if you see a snake, check out this article at runnersworld.com/trail-running-training/snakes. (And if y’all all start sending me photos of snakes just because you think it’s funny to hear me squeal like a littler girl...I swear to God...) 4
