The Highland Bakery has been dear to the hearts of Inman Park residents for years. Faces of Midtown

New On The Mile

By Jeffrey Mielcarz, midtown resident, music lover and oncamera television personality

Check out some of the new local boutique shops, restaurants and art venues popping up all over the Midtown Mile.

BAKE SHOP: Johnathan St. Hilaire’s latest creation, a “true boulangerie and patisserie,” is now open at 8th and Peactree. Treat yourself! www.bakeshopatl.com/home.htm

I moved to the ATL about 10 years ago to work for The Weather Channel. Midtown was perfect and reminded me of the Big Apple (minus that godforsaken snow). My last job at The Weather Channel had me traveling to almost every state in America and no matter which big city or small town I went to, I was always excited to come back to the ATL for the weekend.

- can’t say enough about the calamari appetizer. Get it! For sushi and sake it’s Nickemoto’s. For their thin pizza, I just love Little Azio. And of course if you are looking for the best burger on the planet it has to be The Vortex without questions. Finally, honestly, if I just want something quick and easy I make a quick walk to Piedmont Park for a burrito at Willy’s to sit outside.

My hobby has always been music. In a past life, I was a drummer and toured in a scary metal band. I literally went around the world for a couple of years before I left the band to “become an adult.”

Midtown has changed pretty drastically in the last five years. When I moved in, there were a bunch of nightclubs between 12th and 10th. Now we have a Lowes hotel going up in addition to the newly opened 1010 Midtown, so there are even more places to shop and eat. I love it!

As for favorite Midtown eats - I LOVE LOVE LOVE Mitra 6

KAI LIN ART: This supurb gallery at 800 Peachtree Street features local artists. Through January 22, view work by SCAD professors, such as this piece “The Rooms Inside My Room” by Brett Callero. SCIC Atlanta: “The riches of luxury incorporated with the utmost functionality.” SCIC at 855 Peachtree brings top Italian kitchen design to Atlanta. The showroom features work by South African artists. Most consultations are by appointment but walk-ins are absolutely welcome. www.scicatlanta.com

MIDTOWN MILE T here’s one thing you can’t argue about Midtown: The change has been extraordinary. From the dicey conditions of the 90’s to the walkable, urban cityscape of today, Midtown Alliance’s big, bold retail vision for Peachtree, the Midtown Mile, is undoubtedly moving forward. 500K square feet of retail space is already built, CB2 is opening this spring at 12th & Midtown, residential condo sales are up (thanks to aggressive pricing) and several extraordinary new home-grown restaurants (Bake Shop, Empire State So.), boutiques (Drew Lewis), and galleries (Kai Lin Art) have popped up along Peachtree in the past year alone.

The vision for the Midtown Mile has overwhelming support from developers and residents alike. “I feel strongly that it is our responsibility as developers to brand our retailers as part of the Midtown Mile - for instance ‘Drew Lewis at 933 Peachtree’ Midtown Alliance’s big, rather than ‘Drew Lewis at bold retail vision the Shops of Metropolis,’” for Peachtree, says Metropolis owner, the Midtown Jamestown’s managing Mile, is moving director Matt Bronfman. With that kind of support, forward with there is no doubt that as announcements from high-quality the economy improves, national stores and progress along the Midtown Mile will continue to pick up local boutiques speed as it moves toward even in today’s its goal of 1million square challenging feet of retail in one remarkeconomy. able, walkable mile along ~ Shannon Powell, Peachtree Street. Midtown Alliance www.midtownmile.org

New developments like Viewpoint and Spire blend residential and office space with retail and restaurant space, creating the walkable, shop-able urban cityscape envisioned by the Midtown Mile planners. The Georgian Terrace Hotel’s recent renovations, which improved pedestrian access to Peachtree Street, exemplify the kind of improvements currently underway on the Midtown Mile.

Utrecht art supply store is a fixture in the Midtown neighborhood. The community-made paintings hung on the ceiling reflect the unique character of Midtown.

National brands like Crate & Barrel 2 share space on the Midtown Mile with homegrown merchants like Drew Lewis, creating a shopping experience that is unique to Atlanta. 8
