Hugh Acheson's Empire With the success of Five and Ten, The National and Gosford Wines, Hugh Acheson is already a fixture on the Athens food scene. Now, Hugh is about to add Atlanta to his empire with the fall 2010 opening of Empire State South. Story pages 8-9.

Festival of the Arts Midtown Festival of the Arts is coming to the neighborhood September 25-26 with works by over 100 visual artists

T

here's a new arts festival in town. Having raised over $80,000 in corporate sponsorships from Audi, as well as many Midtown businesses and residential towers, Atlanta's newest arts festival has also recieved a thumbs up from Mayor Kasim Reed. "I look forward to attending this new, signature event in the City of Atlanta," says 2

Mayor Reed. Created by Midtown Festival of the Arts, Inc., the event plan includes a family friendly kid zone, a Midtown Mile road race, a public art display and auction, and other festival attractions such as street performers, spoken word events and film presentations. hen people think of puppetry, they tend to think of muppets or hand puppets -- something that's just for kids. However, contemporary puppetry has its fingers in all kinds of genres including horror, drama, the surreal and even the risquĂŠ. signer duds that smell like an ashtray the second you get home from a big night out. Aurum hosts a wide variety of the hippest DJ's in the city and is located in the heart of Midtown in the Metropolis building; it's got that hidden speakeasy vibe and is definitely cozier than the bigger clubs that can leave you looking for your friends all night.

ooking for a dingy, smoky club with rude bartenders and the same old crowd? Then, stay away from Aurum. The unpretentious lounge with 24-carat decor (read: Aurum means "gold" in Latin) pulls off the swanky vibe without the noses in the air, and did we mention it's smoke-free? Meet Marti Kelefas Marti Kelefas has served as the Piedmont Conservancy's executive assistant for over 12 years

“Work is love made visible.”

Q: You've worked with the Piedmont Conservancy for a long time. What changes have you seen?

Q: Tell us a funny story about Piedmont Park. A: Once I was walking through the Park and a car with an elderly couple drove up beside me. As no vehicles are allowed in the park, I asked them how they got in. They told me they thought they might be lost and were trying to find the airport.

A: The physical condition of the Park has improved tremendously. The Park looks lush and manicured now and of course, all the old dilapidated buildings have now been renovated including the pool, which is just fantastic.

Q: Any closing remarks? A: If you haven’t been to the Park in a while, I’d like to invite you. You’ll be amazed by the changes, and by the time the North Wood Expansion is completed at the end of 2010, there will be an additional 53 acres of beautiful parkland to enjoy. For more info, visit: piedmontpark.org

Q: What do you like best about working at the Conservancy? A: I love being able to see the positive results of my work. Every morning when I enter the Park I see how beautiful and vibrant it is. It’s a natural oasis in the middle of the city and it confirms my belief in the Quaker saying, 6

Summer Stroll

We had a blast at the first-ever Summer Stroll on the Mile this past June. It was fantastic to see neighbors walking the Mile, discovering pockets of festival fun along Peachtree St., from mural making to food tasting, firebreathers, live music, inflatables and more. Here are just a few highlights:

ick Melvin got his start in cooking by pestering his mom in their Louisiana kitchen. Of his new venture at ESS, Melvin says, “As a chef from the South, it is a dream to work in a kitchen where the concept is pure simplicity at its best. Empire State South will be exactly that: a communal restaurant where Southern culture is exemplified and shines. This will truly be a great experience for me and for the city as a whole.

own brand of down-home humility to a growing community of local eateries committed to regionally and sustainably harvested ingredients. "Sure, Empire State South is 'farm to table'," says Acheson, "but the menu doesn't need to be littered with farmers' names to prove the veracity of the flavors. Good food is good food." For a chef who has more than earned his bragging rights, Acheson is decidely down to earth. A fourtime James Beard award nominee, chef/owner of two highly successful Athen's eateries, and winner of Gourmet magazine's "Most Appropriate Chef Tattoo" award, Acheson is disarmingly humble when he describes his cooking. "I want to be a part of my

community," he says. "I want to cook to comfort my community in good times and in bad. As a lot of chefs mature, their cooking gets more complex; mine has gotten simpler." Empire State South will offer a classy, but not fussy, dining experience. Clients can enjoy a game of bocce ball in the adjacent outdoor court or pick up a takeout sandwich from the full service cafĂŠ in the restaurant's lobby. It should come as no surprise that Acheson's award-winning tattoo is a radish, an ingredient best served warm from the sun, brushed with butter and sprinkled in salt, like the iconic Southern flavors you'll find at Empire State South. empirestatesouth.com
