WELBEING AND STUDY DURING CORONA WWW.TUDELFT.NL/STUDENTEN/WELZIJN-EN-STUDIE

INTRODCUTION

Before the BINAS is officially introduced by the chair of the Welcoming Week committee, we will briefly mention the coronavirus. At the time of writing, the circumstances of this BINAS are totally different to any previous editions. The Netherlands is one of many countries severely affected by the coronavirus, yet we want to prepare all our new students as well as possible for their time as a student. We are still working out the precise details of the Welcoming Week, so this information is not yet ready to share in this edition of the BINAS. Nevertheless, we feel that it is important to share all the information in the BINAS in its original form in anticipation of better times, and to give an impression of how Delft, the Welcoming Week and the campus and study normally look. All external contributions are based on the pre-corona circumstances. Still, we hope to give all prospective students the best possible start in their new domain. The 47th Welcoming Week committee

Dear new student, The recent measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus have major consequences for you. You probably have many questions, for example, about the impact on your studies, your financial affairs, and your social life. At www.tudelft.nl/studenten/welzijn-en-studie we are publishing as many answers and initiatives as possible to help you with this. Right now, the top priority is your health, both mental and physical, so we strongly urge you to keep to the RIVM guidelines. Friends and family are more important than ever in times like these. So stay in touch with them and keep an eye on how others around you are coping. Take good care of yourself and each other! Professor Rob Mudde, Vice-President of Education

MAYOR OF DELFT

INTRODCUTION

Dear first-year student, I would like to wish you a warm welcome to Delft, a beautiful city famous for historical figures such as William of Orange, Johannes Vermeer and Hugo de Groot, a city of knowledge and innovation, art and culture, fun-filled events and a lively nightlife. Welcome to Delft, your new domain! This is where it will all be happening for the next few years. A brand new phase in your life starts here. You will probably also be starting out on your own for the first time, away from your parents, free to live your own life, cook your own food (or order takeaways), open your own bank account, and get up when you feel like it... That can seem a little daunting, alone in your room, without friends and parents nearby, and maybe very lonely. That’s what the Welcoming Week is for, and the BINAS which is packed with useful information. Where can I do my banking? Where can I play sports? What student associations are there to join? Delft – your new domain. That’s the theme of the 2020 Welcoming Week. The word domain has many meanings. Perhaps the first thing that springs to mind is a computer network. But domain can also mean: ‘A field in which someone works’, an ‘organisational unit’. Or maybe you would say: ‘The kitchen is absolutely not my domain!’ In the Middle Ages, a domain was an area whose inhabitants owed allegiance to a lord. But I think that Delft as your new domain means a new place where you will soon feel at home. A place where you will make friends for life. A place where you will develop your full potential, where you will experience your student days as a time of adventure, studying, partying and learning opportunities. A place where you learn about yourself and others.

Delft, your new domain, is all about you, your studies and about Delft itself. Many have gone before you. Students often settle in very quickly in Delft – particularly after the Welcoming Week and with the BINAS to refer to. Over the years, students in Delft have shown their commitment to the Delft community, for example, by doing voluntary work. Dear first-year students, enjoy the Welcoming Week and your own study programme. Whether you use your intellectual abilities and creativity to design magnificent buildings, focus on atoms, neurons and protons, or learn to solve complex issues regarding sustainability and health, what you do really matters! That’s why you need to quickly make yourself at home here – in your accommodation, student society, and among your fellow students. At home in Delft, your new domain. I sincerely hope that these next years will be unforgettable for you, and that we will meet up some time soon – in Delft, your new domain. Maybe on campus or while doing some voluntary work? Marja van Bijsterveldt Mayor of Delft

RECTOR MAGNIFICUS TU DELFT

We are writing this in the midst of the coronavirus crisis. An unprecedented global emergency with consequences that we cannot clearly predict, either in the short or the long-term. For TU Delft, this means that all teaching and exams must take place exclusively online for the coming months at least. This represents a huge challenge for lecturers and students alike.

programme.

So what will the 2020 Welcoming Week look like in August? We hope to be able to welcome you as always, with tours, parties, and the traditional singing together. You will certainly deserve that as the cohort of 2020-2021. The introduction is a seminal period in which you will get to know your new Delft domain as well as possible, prepare for your studies, and start For most of you first-year students this suddenly building the networks that will serve you well for meant that you did not have to sit the school- the rest of your life. You can be sure you will be most leaving examinations you had been preparing welcome as new students in Delft! for throughout your time at school. This must have been an anticlimax for you, followed by Prof. Tim van der Hagen the additional disappointment of not being Rector Magnificus / President of the Executive Board able to enjoy the parties, festivals and trips that Delft University of Technology would normally have been part of your schoolleaving celebrations. In addition, the part-time and holiday jobs you were hoping would fund your life as a student are also largely on hold, although new opportunities do exist, such as online supervision of home schooling, manning call centres or delivering all the stuff people now have to order online. We are all trying to make the best of things together. This crisis forces us all to be more flexible and creative than ever in our lives and our work. It is gratifying to see how our students and researchers are joining forces to tackle this crisis – for example, by coming up with solutions for the potential lack of hospital ventilators and medical PPE, and by volunteering to help vulnerable groups of people. One thing is certain: we will need solutionoriented engineering graduates more than ever in the post-corona era. The domain that you will be entering continues to guarantee interesting and socially valuable work. You should therefore have no doubts about opting for an engineering

ALCOHOL POLICY AND HOUSE RULES Dear new student, It’s already been six years since the legal drinking age was raised from 16 to 18. Many of you are 18 or over and are old enough to buy and consume alcohol. Those still under 18 may not do so. Drinking alcohol may sometimes seem an inextricable part of student culture. Such consumption often takes place away from regular cafÊs and pubs, and within student associations, in student accommodation and during events for students.

For this reason, a co-operation was launched in mid-2018 between five student associations: Stichting Jeugd en Alcohol (youth and alcohol foundation), the Delft and Midden-Delfland Red Cross, the municipality of Delft and TU Delft. It had been observed more attention needed to be paid to alcohol use among students.

Educational institutions in Delft do not permit students under 18 to consume alcohol. When they turn 18, they are considered responsible for their own actions. All events providing drinks during the Welcoming Week will have 0.0 places where nonRegular and/or excessive consumption of alcohol alcoholic drinks can be purchased. by students, who tend to be young, can pose considerable health risks. Apart from that, it may lead to nuisance for and physical damage to the surroundings, negative effects on study results as well as damaging the image of students in general. TIJDENS DE OWEE GELDEN DE VOLGENDE HUISREGELS: 1. 2.

3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

By law, the TU Delft Campus is a no-smoking area. If you would like more information about areas where smoking is not permitted, or if you want to stop smoking, visit www.tudelft.nl/ikstop. Alcohol will not be served to anyone under the age of 18. Those under 18 will be given a different wristband to those aged 18 or over. You cannot take part in any Welcoming Week event, including the evening programme, unless you are wearing a wristband. This will be checked at all events and student clubs. You should always have a valid ID card on you during Welcoming Week activities and at the evening events – even if you are over 18. Any Welcoming Week participant under the age of 18 caught consuming alcohol will be immediately removed from the activities/evening programme and their wristband will be confiscated. A note will be made of the name of the Welcoming Week participant in question. A decision will then be taken on whether the person in question can buy back their wristband. It is not permitted to pass on alcoholic drinks to underage participants. Any breach of this rule will result in both parties having their wristbands confiscated on the spot. They will then no longer be able to take part. Participants may not bring their own alcoholic drinks to Welcoming Week events. There will be a zero tolerance policy towards underage drinking and the use of drugs during the 2020 Welcoming Week. It is not permitted to use drugs, including laughing gas, during the Welcoming Week.

DELFT

YOUR NEW DOMAIN

WELCOME TO DELFT Many people refer to their time as a student as the best period of their lives. Leaving your parents, having your own place, new impressions, new friends, and of course a new city where so much remains to be discovered.

DELFT

So we are pleased to welcome you to Delft, the student city par excellence. You may well have some of the best years of your life here. Much of your time as a student will be spent on the campus, of course, but Delft has so much more to offer.

LEISURE TIME Delft has countless bars, cafĂŠs, and outdoor terraces where you can go for a refreshing drink on hot sunny days, and restaurants where you can enjoy a great meal at a decent price. Have you just sat down on one of the four large squares in Delft, but do you actually need to do something online? No problem! Free Wi-Fi is available on all four squares, and you can log onto Eduroam (European network for students). Or do you fancy doing something more active? Wander along the canals, catch a boat tour, and discover Delft from the water. Or why not climb the 376 steps of the Nieuwe Kerk and take in the breathtaking views of the city. You can even see The Hague and Rotterdam from the church. ROTTERDAM AND THE HAGUE Delft is halfway between Rotterdam and The Hague. This makes shopping in either city (10 minutes

away by train) dead easy, while a day at the beach at Scheveningen or Kijkduin is just a 45-minute tram ride away. ICONS Delft, of course, is also well known for its world-famous Delft Blue, its close ties with the House of OrangeNassau, and the painter Johannes Vermeer. Every year, the city attracts around three million visitors from all over the world. Among the attractions they come for are Royal Delft, the last remaining Delft Blue earthenware factory, where you can see master painters at work every day. They also come to visit Museum Prinsenhof Delft, where the Father of the Fatherland, William of Orange, was murdered by Balthasar GĂŠrard. The Vermeer Centre is another popular attraction. Here the story of the artist Johannes Vermeer is told, and you can admire a copy of the world-famous Girl with a Pearl Earring painting. CREATING HISTORY We still continue to write history every day. Every year, Delft makes the front pages of the world news thanks to a brilliant idea or invention coming from you, its students. Examples that come to mind are the solarpowered NUNA vehicle or Boyan Slat, who made headlines with his invention for ridding the world oceans of plastic, and who has already raised millions in investment.

HISTORY OF DELFT HISTORY OF DELFT For the next few years, Delft will be your city. A city with a rich history which has been home to many important people. It is certainly worth the effort to learn more about it. THE ROOTS In around the year 1000, it was discovered that peat bogs become dryer by digging a ditch. This digging process is referred to as ‘delving’. The name ‘Delft’ is taken from this English word. A ditch was delved, and a settlement was established at the point where Delft is now located. A hundred years later, the village had grown so big that a new ditch was needed; the New Delft. Delft became a major market centre, as evidenced by the size of the central market square. In 1246, Delft was granted city rights by the Count of Holland, William II. MIDDLE AGES The Middle Ages were difficult times for Delft; in the fourteenth century, it was besieged, and in 1536, a severe fire reduced the whole city to ashes. The biggest disaster was the ‘Delftse Donderslag’, a massive gunpowder explosion. In 1654, the gunpowder cellar exploded at the location of the present-day Paardenmarkt. 200 houses lay in ruins and another 300 were severely damaged. William of Orange came to live in Delft in the sixteenth century. “I cannot approve of monarchs who want to rule over the conscience of the people, and take away their freedom of choice and religion” is one of his statements that has found its way into the vernacular. This was the cause of his conflict with Philip II and the start of the Eighty Years War. In 1580, William of Orange was declared an outlaw by Philip II and, in 1584, he was assassinated in the Delft Prinsenhof by Balthasar Gérard.

17TH CENTURY During this century, Delft experienced a period of economic boom, partly because of the presence of the Dutch East India Company and the porcelain trade, Delft Blue. A war in China cut off the supply of Chinese porcelain, and Delft gained a monopoly in the porcelain market. This was also the time of one of the finest artists of the Golden Age, Johannes Vermeer. This great painter was born in 1632 in Delft, and lived there all his life. RELAPSE From the “disaster year” of 1672, when England, France, Cologne, and Munster invaded the Dutch Republic, the Delft economy went into decline. The city was increasingly overshadowed by The Hague (seat of government) and Rotterdam (port). CITY OF KNOWLEDGE By 1842, there was a strong need for people with engineering skills, leading to the foundation of the ‘Koninklijke Academie voor Burgerlijke Ingenieurs’ (the forerunner of TU Delft). And that is how Delft became a booming student city. The establishment of the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research in 1932 and other knowledge-intensive institutes and businesses transformed Delft from a cultural and Princes’ city into a knowledge city.

HOUSING IN DELFT You come to study in Delft, but you are not the only one looking for a room. In this chapter you will find useful tips for finding a home! Make sure to arrange your accommodation before arriving in the Netherlands, as you are officially required to register a valid Dutch address within 5 days after arrival in the Netherlands. Registering a valid Dutch address at the local municipality is a legal obligation for all who intend to stay in the Netherlands for 4 months or more, irrespective of nationality or purpose of stay. A valid and registered address allows you to obtain a BSN (Citizen Service Number), which is needed to interact with Dutch authorities. TU Delft suggests three ways to arrange accommodation. See below for information on each of these options. FINDING ACCOMMODATION THROUGH RENTAL AGENCIES OR PRIVATE LANDLORDS Prioritize finding accommodation once you know that you will attend TU Delft. Finding a room in Delft can be difficult and time-consuming. As most university cities in the Netherlands, Delft has a shortage of affordable student accommodations. The following information may prove to be useful when looking for accommodation: • Delft is a relatively small city, therefore neighbouring municipalities can provide good alternatives within reasonable travel distance from TU Delft’s campus. • Click here for a list of organisations and platforms that (also) cater to students. • Delft municipality offers several insights on housing. • Groups on Facebook could aid the search for accommodation; e.g. “Find a room(mate) in Delft” & “Find an international roommate in Delft”. Keep the following in mind when looking for accommodation: • There are fewer (affordable) accommodations available, in the months leading up to the start of a new academic year • Most accommodations on offer are unfurnished and rent often does not include utilities and municipal taxes. • Make sure the owner provides you with a declaration of permission to register the address with the municipality. • Read the rental agreement carefully. • Be aware of rental frauds. After finding accommodation register your Dutch address as soon as possible in Studielink. LODGING WITH FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND OTHER ACQUAINTANCES Moving in with someone? Make sure to have permission from the primary resident as well as the owner of the residence to register the address with the municipality, for which you can use this authorisation form. Fill in the authorisation form and have it signed by the primary resident and the owner of the residence. Bring the form with the necessary documents, as mentioned in the form, to your registration with the municipality.

23

HOUSING IN DELFT Additionally, register your Dutch address as soon as possible in Studielink. FINDING ACCOMMODATION USING TU DELFT’S HOUSING SERVICE TU Delft has partnered with various housing agencies in the greater-Delft region to offer accommodation to students coming from abroad. Accommodations will become available prior to the start of each semester and can only be reserved through TU Delft’s housing portal. TU Delft determines the order in which students gain access to the housing portal based on the order in which full payments are received. Note that TU Delft cannot guarantee to accommodate everyone who applies for this service nor that the available accommodations will meet your preferences; it remains your responsibility to find suitable accommodation in time before the start of your studies when TU Delft’s accommodation supply runs out. Indicate in Osiris when submitting your Confirmation Statement if you would like to apply for this service. Procedural information will follow after TU Delft has processed the receipt of your full payment as specified in your Financial Letter. CONDITIONS After finding accommodation register your Dutch address as soon as possible in Studielink. DISCLAIMERS • Considering the difficult housing market, TU Delft advises you to consider re-applying for next year if you cannot secure an accommodation before the start of your study programme. • For Non-EU/EFTA nationals being registered is a requirement for maintaining their Residence Permit for Study.

TU DELFT Choosing to go to TU Delft is about so much more than your choice of study. TU Delft offers highquality teaching and an inspiring, fascinating, and attractive study environment that allows you, as a student, to develop into a critical, resultsoriented, and socially responsible engineer. As well as being good at leadership, analytical, and FACULTIES AND DEGREE PROGRAMMES critical, TU Delft students enjoy a reputation for TU Delft has eight faculties. These are departments

TU DELFT showing initiative and setting up projects. That enterprising character is part and parcel of the make-up of TU Delft students and engineers. As a TU Delft student, you ask yourself not only how something works, but how it could be improved upon; you see a problem in society and find a solution to it. You will spend much of your time working alone when studying, but you will also learn how to work well in groups. You will carry out many projects as part of a group. You will experience several different teaching formats during your studies. There will be lectures, where you sit in a lecture theatre with many of your fellow students, listening to what the lecturer is saying. You can use Collegerama to replay lectures online. During tutorials, you get to grips with the course material. These may take place in a laboratory, for example, depending on what you are studying. As well as your lectures and tutorials, some teaching will take place online. STRUCTURE OF BACHELOR’S DEGREE PROGRAMME A Bachelor’s degree programme lasts three years, as is the case at all other universities. At the end of your first year, you will be given a binding recommendation on whether or not to continue with your studies. If you have obtained less than 45 of your 60 credits, you may not continue with the same programme the following year. In your third year, you choose a minor. Minors last six months, and they give you an opportunity to study a particular subject in your programme in depth, or to broaden your knowledge of other fields. You can choose a minor at another TU Delft faculty, or indeed one from a university elsewhere in the Netherlands, or even abroad. In other words, you have a lot of freedom in terms of what you do in these six months. We encourage international mobility by offering options for doing part of your programme at

another university, in or outside the Netherlands. TU Delft has partnerships with various other universities and international companies, which makes it easy for you to go on an exchange programme. After completing the Bachelor’s thesis project (BEP), you will receive your Bachelor’s degree. You will then have the choice of continuing to study, or starting work. Following on from your Bachelor’s programme, you can take a Master’s programme. At universities of technology, they take two years. STRUCTURE OF FIRST BACHELOR’S YEAR What does the first year look like? Roughly speaking, it is divided into four quarters (and sometimes octals). Exams are held several times a year. There is sometimes a ‘white week’ preceding exams, during which there are no lessons. Students use these weeks to revise all the material that has been covered during the past quarter. Our study areas, which have extended opening hours during these weeks, are always packed with hard-working students at this time! As well as study areas, TU Delft has various project rooms. This means you and your project group have somewhere to meet and work together. You are of course free to work on your studies away from the campus. The most technical degree programmes have a large number of theoretical courses during the first year; they require clear understanding and independent study on the part of students, and cover mathematics, including linear algebra, calculus, and analysis. You also do laboratory courses in which you carry out a particular assignment in a group and apply your theoretical knowledge in a practical context. TALENT DEVELOPMENT TU Delft offers various student projects – separate from the degree programmes – that give you the opportunity to further develop your talents. These student projects are also referred to as ‘dream teams’. Examples include the Vattenfall Solar Team and its

Examples include arts, crafts, reflection, lifestyle, sports and games. You can also initiate activities yourself, and you are free to use a student kitchen and living room.

Nuna, a car that runs entirely on solar energy. This is a great way to learn, and the experience gained is invaluable for your future career. Bachelor’s students who are capable of handling more than the regular degree programme and who perform at an above average level can take part in the TU Delft Honours Programme, a challenging supplementary programme in which you carry out research or do projects independently. You can design much of the programme yourself. Together with Honours students from other Bachelor’s programmes, you may find yourself working on research for a professor, for example, or writing a business plan, carrying out an assignment for a company, or organising scientific lectures for fellow students. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT During your studies, we will encourage you to develop personally as well as academically. By doing voluntary work, for example, or by being an active member of one or more of the many study or student associations that we have in Delft. You can find more information about these further on in the BINAS. X is a place on campus where you can develop the talents that you don’t necessarily need for an

What makes Stud unique is the fact that it is non-profit. This means that the profits it makes are ploughed back for the benefit of students at TU Delft. We do this in various ways. One is Stud Academy – an initiative for improving students’ knowledge about non-study related matters. It means giving students a chance to broaden their minds away from their studies. Stud is also pleased to contribute to the future and development of TU Delft students. The aim is to encourage innovation in the area of sustainability and entrepreneurship. The Stud Fund supports various student projects in this regard. Examples include the Vattenfall Solar Team, DUT Racing Team, and the TU Delft BlueDot foundation. We are the board of Stud – seven TU Delft students who are spending a year working full time on its day-to-day business operations. A new group is elected every

academic year. Stud also has a body for ensuring continuity, consisting of delegates from the university and the business community. This means you have the opportunity to spend a year helping run a successful business.

D.S.Z. WAVE

SWIMMING

SPORT & CULTURE

DSZ WAVE is a sport association with members divided into its three sport branches: swimming, water polo and triathlon. WATER POLO There are three water polo practices each week: at Monday, Wednesday and Friday. At DSZ WAVE, we have two men’s teams in competition (third class bond and third class district), one women’s team in competition (third class district), and last but not least a mixed beginner’s team. This last team offers starting water polo players the chance to get familiar with the sport. These players often join one of the teams in the competitions later. The beginners play four times a year against the other beginners of student sport associations in a fun competition. SWIMMING Swimmers can train five times a week: Monday throughout Friday. There is a practice for all levels every day. You can choose yourself which practice you want to join and how often. All the learned swimming skills can be tested at the NSZKs (swimming competitions) five times a year.

We organize 10 training sessions per week!

Every Thursday we have a drink in our own bar, the Badtrand!

At these competitions, which are spread through cities all over the Netherlands, we show to every other student swimming association that we are faster and more fun. The levels of our swimmers vary from “I once got my first swimming diploma and I think it will be fun to go swimming again.” to swimmers that swim NK-limits. Everyone is welcome! TRIATLON Another branch at DSZ WAVE is triathlon. The triathletes join the swimming practices of the swimmers and have their own running and cycling practice every week. We have a division team that participates in the third class NTB competition. For both starting and advanced triathletes, DSZ WAVE organises a triathlon in the Delftse Hout.

GEZELLIGHEID We have a nice drink at the Badtrandt every Thursday evening, but you can also stick around after the practices for a drink at the swimming pool. Besides drinks, we organize a lot of activities like: themed drinks, Crazy Thursday Dinners, the WAVE weekend, Christmas dinner, winter sports trip, a roommates tournament, club championships etc…

DSAV’40 ATHLETICS

SPORT & CULTURE

After a long time of absence, athletics is once again present among the wide range of sports offered in Delft. Since a year and a half there is DSAV`40. This is the student group of athletics association AV`40. This group is your starting shot for a fun student time. DSAV`40 trains on Monday and Wednesday from 18:00-19:30 on the track of AV`40 in the north of Delft, fifteen minutes cycling from the campus. During this training usually an hour is spent with the whole group on general athletic development, after which there is the last half hour to train more focused on specific disciplines.

We also go to competitions together as a group. The best ones are of course the Dutch Student Championships. There are no fewer than eight of these a year in athletics, including the NSK outdoor, NSK indoor and NSK teams. You can also take part in these competitions if you are not a member with us. If you want to go, please let us know. Besides athletics DSAV`40 organizes many other fun things. Every two weeks there is dinner with a drink after the training session on Wednesday. There are also activities such as a Sinterkerst-ennieuwdiner and a DIES-trip that was in Arnhem last year. Furthermore, two weekends are organized for members. A starting weekend a few weeks after the start of the academic year to get to know all new members and a training weekend in spring.

Our mascot is Arnold the Aardpig!

Before DSAV`40 existed, Delft was the only student city without student athletics!

S.B.V. SLOPEND OUTDOOR SPORTS

At student ourdoorsports association Slopend it is all about one thing: being active together outside!

Almost every day of the week we offer a survivalrun training on our own obstacle course at X TU Delft. The survivalrun sport combines trailrunning with tackling a variety of obstacles on the way. These could be any construction built up from wooden beams, ropes, nets and suspended handles. At our training you will learn how to cope with these obstacles in a way that combines technique and strength with low-profile competition in which you can push yourself to the limit. During the entirety of September there is an open training policy in which everyone can participate, so do drop by if this sounds like your jam!

During the Summer and February holidays, Slopers team up to make plans for epic expeditions. These trips could be anything you can think of: climb Mount Damavand in Iran, go horse riding in Kirgizië for a week or walking through the snow in Poland! These are just a few of the creative and daring expeditions that Slopers have completed. Of course we also value social activities: once per month we have dinner together and organize themed drinks. Lastly, there are many “extraordinary” outdoor sports activities like orientation running, indoor-trampoline jumping, lasergaming.... Just that tiny bit extra!

Throughout the whole year we organise a variety of weekends in which we go hiking together, build our own shelters and explore outdoor sports such as mountain biking and canoeing.

In addition we engage in bushcraft: surviving in and with nature with minimal means. Within Slopend there is a strong bushcraft culture with many enthusiastic members who are eager to pass on their knowledge and techniques to newcomers.

Did you know that it is possible to train with us every workday!

IMPORTANT QUESTIONS DURING THE OWEE What is an OWee group and how are they formed? OWee groups have ten prospective students and two mentors. STUDENT ASSOCIATIONS When can you sign up to a student association? The OWee is intended to let you get to know all the student associations and to sign up to the one that appeals to you. Some student associations have limits on their membership numbers, so if you want to sign up for one, don’t wait too long. In many cases, you can only sign up to a student association during the OWee, either in the daytime or in the evenings. If you would like to become a member but cannot come to the

OWee, you should contact the student association in question.

What is the introduction period? This is a period in which new members of a student association get to know each other and the association itself. How the period is filled in, and how long it lasts, differs from one association to the next, but it usually starts immediately after the OWee – that is, Friday 23 August. If you are planning to join a student association, it is a good idea to keep the week after the OWee free. Between the OWee and the introduction period it is possible to go home and swap your OWee things for those that you need for the introduction period.
