Outdoor learning at a glance:
Key outcomes from a JCA adventure
• JCA recognise the positive impact of outdoor learning and make it a reality.
There are provisions set out by governing organisations in the development of outdoor learning, which help to shape the JCA programme at our centres. While each centre has its own specialisms, all provide the opportunity to develop in the following key areas:
• Our instructors work to inspire and help children learn and achieve. • Our team can collaborate with teachers to better understand the needs of their group. • All-round inclusion – opportunities for all children, no matter their circumstances.
Social and emotional awareness Awareness of the environment
Learning Outside the classroom with JCA
Skills specific to physical activities
JCA have been awarded full accreditation for the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge scheme and our activity trips have been recognised for their emphasis on safety, enjoyment, education and selfdevelopment. JCA recognise that learning can be an adventure, and an outdoor environment can help to embed a wealth of knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviours.
Self-motivation and desire for future learning
Freedom outside can reinforce children’s emotional well-being and allow them to embrace the natural world. Our centres provide open environments that encourage children to experience natural phenomena and pursue a desire to engage in learning. By helping children to participate with physical activity early they are more likely to remain active in later life and our outdoor adventure programmes strongly promote health and well-being. All the elements explored in a JCA residential can translate to creative thinking, productivity, good interpersonal relationships and resilience in the face of adversity. Providing high-quality outdoor learning experiences, a JCA adventure is a chance to participate in new and exciting activities and develop new skills. Our aim is to inspire children to achieve at their highest level and we ensure inclusivity is encouraged so that all children can access the activities. By committing to the huge benefits gained from learning outside the classroom, we are confident that JCA adventures provide a truly memorable and fun experience. 8
Health and well-being
Individual attributes Life skills
Future prospects Holistic development of character Fun! These can be measured against several quality indicators to ensure children are provided with the best opportunities to develop during their outdoor adventure.
Maintaining the quality and effectiveness of JCA programmes JCA understand the importance of progressive formal education alongside experiences in non-formal settings. We believe a tailored outdoor learning experience can positively impact on attainment, retention, and work hand-in-hand with classroom education. Our JCA instructors are trained on specific activities, are selected for their understanding of the benefits of residential trips and have exceptional interpersonal skills to shape learning experiences for school groups. Collaboration between teachers and JCA instructors allows children to develop holistically by understanding the individual and collective needs of the group.
Group Leader’s Checklist A residential trip can be a huge leap for some children and for group leaders the prospect of planning the trip can be equally daunting. Choosing the right activity centre that meets your educational aims and learning outcomes, provides an exciting activity programme and is a safe environment is of paramount importance. We have been developing our adventures for 25 years, and this has seen JCA become one of the leading providers of activity residential trips. Offering action packed curriculum linked itineraries, support throughout the booking process and your stay, plus exceptional value for money, organising your next school residential trip is made that much easier. ‌For these reasons and loads more, JCA ticks all the right boxes:
9
For a lot of pupils, a JCA activity trip presents an array of new and exciting activities that they may not have heard of before, not to mention it could very well be their first time spending the night away from home. This can be an unfamiliar and scary environment, but it provides the perfect opportunity for your students to develop their self-confidence, overcome their fears, gain independence and simply get used to the experience of trying new things. Residential trips form an important part of growing up and provide an opportunity for a valuable learning experience.
Support from peers Close friendships are often formed on the school trip, with pupils coming together as they adjust and adapt to a new environment. While they remain under the instruction of group leaders and staff, students are given more freedom compared to being in the classroom, enabling them to come out of their shells and to bond with their classmates through new experiences. Subsequently, this leads to improved confidence and peer support, allowing pupils to help one another conquer back in the classroom and beyond.
10
Our instructors operate on a typical ratio of 1:12. This allows them to get to know each child - their strengths, weaknesses and personalities. It also helps the children get the most out of their JCA adventure, with instructors supporting children to help them overcome their fears and really embrace each activity. Children have been seen to bond with and look up to instructors, and JCA are proud of the special relationships that often support the growth of confidence in pupils during their time at the centres. Activities such as climbing, abseiling and water sports provide the perfect situation for your students to increase their resilience, determination and allay any fears they might have. With the support of teachers, instructors and other pupils, children will feel a boost of confidence to tackle the wall, the lake or the zip wire, and to push themselves beyond their comfort zone. Once you see your students reach their goal with a huge grin on their face, you’ll soon witness a change in their attitude to tackling issues back in the classroom, trying new things and their overall self-confidence.
Improved resilience, well-being and self-confidence
Teachers also see other soft skills developing such as working as a team, considering others, handling conflicting opinions and problem-solving.
With a multitude of activities across our centres including abseiling, aerial trek, archery, canoeing, climbing, fencing, tunnelling and many more, there’s plenty of chances for your pupils to challenge themselves, build their confidence and eradicate any anxieties.
A JCA residential will help to develop, nurture and build character within your students, helping them to exceed personal barriers and become more engaged in learning - with teachers able to refer to these learning experiences and use them to their advantage back in the classroom.

Far more than just a school trip, our residentials provide an outdoor learning experience that can provide lifelong memories for your pupils and be one of the best first experiences children spend away from their parents or guardians. With JCA, your school residential doesn’t have to be taken in the height of summer, in fact there are some extremely rewarding benefits of taking a JCA activity trip during autumn and spring.
Boost pupil’s resilience, self-confidence and wellbeing Allowing your students to challenge themselves and in a residential environment can enhance their willingness to try something new and further their self-belief. Taking the trip earlier in the school year will increase your students’ self-confidence and participation back in the classroom - setting them up for the rest of the academic year or perfect for pre-exam teaching.
87% of secondary students felt more confident to try new things after a residential
Create lasting relationships between students, teachers and the whole class The change of environment on a residential brings a new dynamic for children to adapt to, it helps them explore options beyond their fixed ‘home’ or ‘school’ personality and gives them the opportunity to truly be themselves - this allows deeper relationships to be formed and sustained back in school, boosting cohesion and fostering a sense of belonging. The sooner the residential, the sooner children can bond with one another and the sooner teachers get to know their pupils, leading to a more trusting and respectful relationship on return to the classroom, and throughout the year. Residentials are also perfect for smoothing student’s transition experiences, such as their first few months back in class, whether that’s with new or returning classmates.
79% of primary pupils said they know their teacher better as a result of their residential and 84% of secondary students said they get on better with
others in their class 28
Uncover new learning opportunities, embed learning back in the classroom and increase engagement with learning Ignite a passion for learning in your pupils that can be taken back into school life and nurtured throughout the year. Going on an off-peak residential leads to improved student engagement in learning, which can have a longterm impact on their education or give that much-needed boost before important exams. The residential will also give teachers the opportunity to gain a better understanding of their students, how pupils interact with activities differently to how they may typically approach tasks in the classroom, how teachers can respond to them and a range of new learning opportunities to be practised back in the school environment.
Positive changes in behaviour and attendance Residentials have also been proven to lead to improved behaviour and attendance post-trip. Better relationships and understanding between staff and students results in better behaviour within the classroom, often stemming to an increase in attendance.
72% of primary pupils said that their behaviour at school is
better after a residential
Greater return on investment As a Party Leader aiming to take your students on an activity trip, you don’t want to place a large financial burden on the children’s families. With JCA, our residentials taking during low season are offered at a discounted price, providing schools and parents or guardians with the benefit of a greater return on investment. With cheaper prices per person compared to the peak season and the advantage of reaping all the benefits from the residential throughout the year, low season activity trips are not to be overlooked. Data taken from Learning Away’s Winter Residentials campaign.
29

Disco night brings all groups together for a fun and energetic final evening of throwing shapes. Silent discos use wireless headsets and a choice of channels so you only listen to the music you like.
Children will take to the centre’s woodlands and outdoor areas to discover the environment around them.
Movie night is a great opportunity to reflect back on the day’s events with friends and enjoy a classic film – don’t forget the popcorn!
Children must get their thinking caps and running shoes on as they compete in this active quiz.
