A teacher’s view What an excellent start to the academic year. I am particularly impressed by the instructors this year; they were helpful, dynamic and hardworking. James and Harly have gone that extra mile on several occasions - they are a credit to JCA. We were very pleased with our accommodation - great facilities and outdoor space. The evening entertainment was great - loved the talent show around the camp fire. We were blown away by the amazing JCA staff. Their dedication and endless enthusiasm really made the trip.

Meet the Condover Team…

A teacher’s view I just thought I would drop you a note to say how much the staff and pupils enjoyed their visit to Condover Hall last week. It all ran very smoothly and we were very well looked after. All your staff were extremely helpful and went out of their way to make sure we had a great visit. Our pupils worked hard and played hard and came away having had a wonderful experience. All the facilities were excellent! Thanks again for all the help you provided in planning our trip. Abraham Guest Academy

Andrew Smeed-Curd JCA General Manager

When I wanted to go and work for an American Camp during gap year, my mum said, ‘Ooh you may not like that, why not try it in England first’. 22 years later I am still in England and working and living at Condover Hall…. and yes, I definitely like it. I was captured in my first year working at an adventure centre, as I really believed in what the experience gave the children and staff alike; independence, confidence (in a nonegotistical way), a sense of achievement and memories that would last a lifetime. I really wanted to have a job which would enable me to help kids who may not have had some positive elements to their childhood and I realised that working at adventure centres I played a part in giving a child an amazing experience for the time they were with us, whatever their background.

It was then I decided that I wanted to work my way up in the industry. I started as a junior staff member and soon progressed to a senior staff member. I eventually became operationally responsible for a centre with 1000 guests and 330 staff. For the last 3 years I have worked for JCA and at the start of 2014 I took the position of General Manager for JCA and haven’t looked back since… so maybe my mum was right for suggesting that I’d be better off in England?

Favourite JCA Activity: I think we have lots of great activities at JCA but for me the best is Archery; the reason being is that when the children start an archery session they mostly miss the target (not that the sheep in the field behind are too impressed with that!) but by the end a good majority are hitting the target and even getting gold, and the sense of accomplishment is incredible to see.

NEW High Ropes Course We are pleased to announce the unveiling of our new high ropes course at Condover Hall. This high ropes course is designed to encourage groups to work together to overcome various challenges on the ground or at a height in a safe, controlled environment. This will supplement the existing high ropes course and enable more children to experience this popular and exhilarating activity. Taking the very best advice from industry experts to build the new high ropes course, we have looked at ways of giving new and exciting challenges to children on a new linear course enabling more children to take part at any one time. This course includes many new items not already featured at Condover Hall and we really believe that it will enhance their JCA experience and give them an even greater adventure during their stay.

High Ropes Challenge… Our existing high course remains a popular choice for adventurers of all ages at Condover Hall. We have considered what activities provide the most exciting, adrenaline-pumping and cohesive experiences to provide an additional high ropes activity area. Introducing a series of fresh challenges, your children can reach new heights as individuals whilst building confidence and co-ordination in a team environment.

Power Fan Descender

P.E

Offering the ultimate adrenaline rush, the fan descender takes you from the highest point of the top platform to the ground at the click of the fingers. Children can support each other in the ultimate test of trust in the ropes and courage to succeed. Those with an appetite for heights will be scaling the tower to repeat the thrill.

High Aerial Trek

P.E

It’s amazing what can be achieved with a little faith as participants take on an obstacle course mid-air. Negotiate through a series of activities including Indy Bridge, the parallel wires and criss-cross rope challenge as children support their peers in overcoming personal trials.

Bouldering Wall…

P.S.H.E

P.E

Problems require time to find solutions. Sometimes the answer is staring at you right in the face, other times you need your peers to provide some hints. Bouldering provides the perfect opportunity for children to explore different routes across the wall while their peers provide encouragement and tips for their next move. Scaling back to the nitty-gritty of rock climbing, bouldering provides endless fun as groups enjoy the opportunity to explore and map out routes whilst waiting for their turn on the high ropes course. Whether you’re an experienced climber or just starting out, the bouldering wall is a safe and captivating problem-solving activity that stimulates communication.

Meet the JCA Instructors Andy Hainey

JCA Activity instructor My passion for the outdoors is limitless, despite only having worked in the industry for a short period, and working with kids in the outdoors provides an experience which is unforgettable and life changing! I was submerged into an industry where the happiness, excitement and freedom are so pure, that you eschew transient distractions such as television or mobile phones. As the famous conservationist John Muir said, “Going in to the outdoors, I found, was to actually go in.”

26

I have taken many residential trips over the years but have never felt the need to write a letter of commendation before. The instructors we had were amazing and the best I have ever worked with on any residential and I wanted you to be aware of what a good team they made. I watched some very shy and nervous children grow in confidence and stature over our 3 day stay at Condover Hall.

St Giles Junior School

A teacher’s view All of our instructors were EXCELLENT!! The children were whooped up/motivated/excited from the moment we arrived. All 3 instructors have made the children’s experience absolutely fantastic and our staff really appreciated their hard work. Lucy Lee, Badsey First School

Favourite JCA Activity: My favourite JCA activity has to be the campfire. I am one of those people who lives solely to amuse themselves and, excuse me while I blow my own trumpet, my quirky selfgratification is usually well received by others - I get to jump around and crack jokes that are terribly unfunny. I love to see kids get up for the talent show and perform for their classmates, it takes a lot of courage and the kids always support each other - it is a wonderful thing to see! Some of the talents are hilarious and others are mind blowing – but all are memorable in their own right!

Recruitment, Supervising and Training… As a recognised Investor in People, we understand that the training and development of staff is the key to any successful company.

Recruitment Three Steps to recruiting JCA staff… 1. Many of our centre staff have worked for JCA in previous seasons and choose to return year after year. We also place advertisements in specialist publications to attract new recruits. 2. Prior to recruitment, all staff are required to complete a detailed JCA application form. Individuals are then selected for interview and are assessed on their enthusiasm, friendliness and suitability to work with students. 3. Two mandatory references are taken for each potential employee, plus an enhanced disclosure to the Criminal Records Bureau (or equivalent government agency).

Instruction and Supervision ● Our instructor to student ratio is a maximum of 1 to 12 for land-based activities, 1 to 8 for

multi-trained instructor per group for the duration of your stay. ● Having a multi-skilled instructor helps us to understand the strengths, limitations and personalities of

each student which, in turn, helps students to reach their full potential through trust and support. ● A full list of instructors’ names and qualifications are held on-site and is available to groups

upon request.

Professional Training ● Successful applicants are offered contracts of employment which are subject to satisfactory

completion of our intensive training course. ● The training course prepares them for their future role and involves coaches from national governing

bodies as well as extensive in-house training by managers and/or senior instructors. ● Successful staff must then complete a probationary period of work, during which time they are

supervised and assessed by senior JCA instructors. ● Instructors are provided with our comprehensive company training manual which includes:

Activity Sessions Standards and Procedures - Strict Safety Standards and Guidelines for the conduct of all activities. Other subjects include health & safety at work, student protection, group management and other essential skills.

Our Pledge…

Learning Outside the Classroom…

We have pledged to engage in an ongoing process to sustain high-quality learning outside the classroom, by demonstrating that we have met six quality indicators:

Every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age ability and circumstances.

● We have a process in place to assist users to

plan the learning experience effectively ● We will provide accurate information about

what we are offering ● We will provide activities, experience and

resources which meet learner needs ● We will review the experience and act

on feedback ● We will meet the needs of the users ● We have a safety management

processes in place to manage risk effectively

Young people of all ages benefit from real life ‘hands on’ experiences; when they can see, hear, touch and explore the world around them and have opportunities to experience challenges and adventure. They need to realise the relationship between school experiences and the wider world. The classroom environment doesn’t always provide young people with enough of these opportunities. Learning Outside the Classroom aims to get students and young people out and about. Experiences ranging from activity days to residential stays help motivate young people, reducing poor behaviour and truancy, while helping schools to raise attainment and meet Every Student Matters outcomes. There is an increasing body of evidence which clearly demonstrates the benefits for young people’s learning and personal development outside the classroom. In summary, when young people learn outside the classroom, they: ● are exposed to new experiences ● learn in different ways related to their learning styles

are motivated to learn more and feel positive about learning ● become self-confident, developing self-esteem and self-awareness ● work together, fostering decision-making and teamwork ● improve communication skills with peers and adults ● are healthier, and their sense of well-being increases ● appreciate the links between formal and informal learning ●

JCA are Learning Outside the Classroom quality badge holders ensuring good practice, high quality teaching and learning experiences and risk management. Our courses promote personal, social and health education by: ● allowing young people to face new challenges and overcome fears ● developing coordination and mastering new skills ● developing effective communication skills ● adapting to new situations and environments ● solving problems and taking responsibility ● encouraging discipline and self control

i ncreasing self esteem and confidence ● promoting team work ● gaining independence ● promoting a healthy lifestyle ● developing a positive attitude towards others and balancing points of view ●

H - Our Liability 1. The company accepts responsibility for the service which it provides. Many services included in your overall course provision such as the services provided by the site, coach companies or other transport operators are provided and performed by organisations over whom Travel Class has no direct control. However, the company accepts responsibility for providing all the various parts of your trip to a reasonable standard and the company has done its best to ensure that the services provided by its various suppliers are efficiently supplied and are of a reasonable standard. The company accepts the responsibility for acts and/or omissions of its employees, agents, subcontractors and suppliers provided they were at the time acting within the scope of or in the course of their employment agency or contract of supply. This acceptance of liability does not apply where the term and definition of “Force Majeure” as defined in these conditions occurs. In all cases where personal injury, illness or death occurs, the companies liability is limited to the trip price (excluding insurance premiums and any alteration/amendment charges) of the person(s) affected in total. 2. The company also accepts responsibility for the death, injury or illness of any member of the party which occurs as a result of failure to perform or improper performance of any part of our contract with you by any of the companies employees, agents or subcontractors, provided they were at the time acting within the scope of or in the course of their employment, agency or contract of supply, with the exception that the failure to perform or improper performance was due to your own acts and/or omissions, or those of any third party not connected with the provision of your trip arrangements and which were unforeseeable and unavoidable, or an event which either ourselves or the suppliers of the service(s) could not have foreseen or forestalled even with all due care. As far as sea carriage is concerned the companies liability is limited as if we were carriers within the appropriate national convention. Our acceptance of this liability is conditional upon your notifying us in writing within 28 days of your return from your trip, and where any payment is made to you or a member of your party by us or our insurers, we reserve the right to claim against any third party responsible. It is also a condition that the person(s) in receipt of such payment will assign to ourselves or our insurers any rights they may have to claim against any third party. 3. You must also agree to give ourselves or our insurers your full cooperation. 4. Should you or any member of your party suffer illness, injury or death during the period of your trip by misadventure arising from any activity which does not form part of the services we are contracted to provide, we shall do our best at our absolute discretion to give assistance, guidance and financial assistance, where appropriate, up to a limit per booking of £5,000 cost to ourselves. 5. Under the terms of your insurance, all the members of your party are

covered for medical expenses, medical emergency service and legal expenses cover. If any costs incurred by the company in providing you with the aforementioned financial assistance are for insured risks or in the event of a successful claim against a third party, the company reserves the right to recover costs from the party member concerned.

I - Complaints Procedure 1. If there is a problem during the course, the party leader should speak immediately to the Centre Manager who will probably be able to resolve it. 2. If the problem cannot be resolved at the Activity Centre during the course, the Party Leader should write to the company with full details on his/her return within seven days. 3. Disputes arising out of, or in connection with, this contract which cannot be amicably settled may be referred to arbitration, if the customer so wishes, under a special Scheme arranged by the Association of British Travel Agents, and administered independently by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. 4. The scheme provides for a simple and inexpensive method of arbitration on documents alone with restricted liability on the customers in respect of costs. Full details will be provided on request or can be obtained from the ABTA website (www.abta. com). The Scheme does not apply claims for an amount greater than £5,000 per person. There is also a limit of £25,000 per booking form. Neither does it apply to claims, which are solely in respect of physical injury or illness or their consequences. The Scheme can however deal with compensation claims, which include an element of minor injury or illness subject to a limit of £1,000 on the amount the arbitrator can award per person in respect of this element. The application for arbitration and Statement of Claim must be received by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators within nine months of the date of return. Outside this time limit arbitration under the Scheme may still be available if the company agrees, but the ABTA Code does not require such agreement.

J - The Party Leader’s Responsibility 1. The Party Leader should ensure that all party members observe all laws and customs at all times. 2. The Party Leader is in loco parentis and should at all times be responsible for the party’s welfare and the good behaviour of the party towards property and other people and to ensure that party members should be acting reasonably at all times.
