Explore the iconic attractions that explain the story of Berlin’s toilsome past and head for the main avenue of Kurfürstendamm to test out your German language skills in the many high-street stores.

Language Lessons Travelbound can arrange language lessons at a local language school. This gives students a chance to work on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. This focused study combined with immersion in the German language aids development and comprehension skills.

Fernsehturm Located on Alexanderplatz the 368 metre TV tower dominates the city skyline and is the tallest building in Germany. The Tower was built in the 1960s by the East German Government not least to demonstrate the strength and efficiency of the socialist party system.

Guided Tour in German Explore Berlin’s rich culture and history on foot by taking a walking tour. The tour includes must-see sights such as the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and Unter den Linden – the most well-known and grandest street in Berlin.

The Story of Berlin This interactive, walk-through exhibition is perfect for groups who want to add some European history to their language tour as it focuses on an 800-year journey through Germany’s capital city. Guided tours also include a visit to an original nuclear bomb shelter housed under the exhibition.

City Trail Discover Berlin on a self-guided tour with a twist. Explore 3 historical areas of Berlin as students look to find the clues to a series of questions by venturing to sites including Alexanderplatz, Brandenburg Gate, Potsdamer Platz and Checkpoint Charlie. Questions can be set in German or English.

DDR Museum Beyond the border checkpoints and secret police, this museum displays the everyday economic, social and recreational elements of life on the other side of the wall. It is one of the most interactive museums in the world, where visitors are encouraged to take part and handle the exhibits.

The Rhineland

Explore the local traditions of the Rhineland as students dive into landmark cities full of cultural delights. From the larger historic hotspots of Koblenz and RĂźdesheim am Rhein to the enchanting castles along the Rhine River, students will be able to develop their linguistic skills through unscripted conversations with native speakers.

Language Lessons Travelbound can arrange language lessons at a local language school giving students a chance to work on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Afterwards, they can use what they have learned in a real context as they soak up the atmosphere in the Rhineland’s lively town squares.

Boppard Your group can enjoy the riverside promenade of this small town, its lively squares and quiet lanes, as well as its lush hills, valleys and vineyards. For the best view of the largest bend on the Rhine, take a trip on the chairlift from Mühltal to Gedeonseck. A town trail is also available.

Market Visit The Rhineland is full of towns holding bustling local markets that draw in visitors from afar. Benefiting from hearing local intonation, accents and pronunciation, students have a brilliant opportunity to engage in real social situations with native speakers.

Imhoff Chocolate Museum This engaging museum in Cologne shows the entire history of chocolate, from its beginnings with the Olmec, Mayan and Aztec civilizations to contemporary products and production methods. There’s a tropicarium with cacao trees, and students can indulge in the chocolate fountain. Guided tour available.

Romanticum The interactive exhibition is housed in a stunning new building: the Forum Confluentes culture centre in Koblenz. It brings to life fascinating aspects of the Middle Rhine Valley over an area of 800m². Take a journey through time as a steamship passenger and experience the romance of the Rhine up close while getting to know the river, its legends and myths.

Vineyard Visit Visit Germany’s famous Palatinate wine region and take in a visit to one of its exquisite vineyards. Students will be able to gain a great insight into local production of wine and enjoy a tour of a beautiful wine cellar which exhibits traditional wine production tools.

Did you know

You can complete your tour with a visit to Marksburg Castle. A main site of the UNESCO World Heritage Rhine Gorge, Marksburg Castle is the only one of 40 hill castles in the region never destroyed.

Barcelona

As the capital of Catalonia, Barcelona has two official languages: Catalan and Castilian Spanish. The pull and popularity of this vibrant city on the Mediterranean makes it a great choice for young language learners. Barcelona is a capital of both culture and sport packed with museums, art galleries, music, amazing architecture, a former Olympic park and the Camp Nou – home to the world’s most successful football team, the FC Barcelona.

La Boqueria Market Dating back to the middle ages, the Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria is one of Barcelona’s leading attractions. Located on Las Ramblas, this covered market has a dizzying array of fruits, vegetables, meats, fish, confectionery and more. There’s also a ‘culinary classroom’, where you can learn to cook.

Flamenco Show Pupils can enjoy the colourful spectacle of this traditional Andalusian art form on stage. The passion, strength and confidence of Flamenco performers make for an unforgettable show. See how they artfully convey their full range of emotions within a strict framework of rhythmic patterns.

Tapas Evening An evening of tapas tasting makes for an enjoyable way to learn about Spanish/Catalan food and culture. Try manchego cheese, as well as olives, air-dried ham and various types of sausage, including the popular chorizo. Fish and seafood also feature on the menu.

Camp Nou Stadium Visit the FC Barcelona’s home, the Camp Nou for a unique experience: giving your students the chance to walk through the most emblematic areas of the stadium including the away team changing room, the players’ tunnel, the press room and commentary box. There is also a museum documenting Barça’s history.

A Day in the Life of Pedro With this Spanish language game, students can enjoy an accompanied two hour group language activity around an area of Barcelona following a day in the life of Pedro, a fictional Spanish boy. Tasks involve listening, reading and speaking Spanish with language activities and teamwork. The day ends with churros and chocolate for all!

Paella Lesson A lesson in how to make Spain’s famous rice-based dish provides a great new skill, plus some historical background. Paella originated in the fields of Valencia, but today it is made in every region of Spain using just about any ingredient that goes well with rice.

Granada A tour of Granada brings to life Spain’s Moorish and Christian history. Walk through the Old Quarter and visit the famous Alhambra. Built for the last Muslim emir in Spain, the beautifully preserved architecture and intricate decoration of this palace and fortress feeds students’ interest in the area’s past.

Málaga Pupils discover the attractions of the port city of Málaga, with its winding old streets, impressive monuments, beautiful gardens and countless shops and cafés. Highlights include the ancient fortress of Gibralfaro – which overlooks the modern city – and a visit to the Museo Picasso Málaga.

Tapas Evening An evening of tapas tasting makes for an enjoyable way to learn about Andalusian food and culture. The menu includes cold tapas, such as air-dried ham, cheeses and olives; and hot options such as chopitos – battered and fried baby squid – succulent bull’s tail, and flamenquines – deep fried ham rolls.

Flamenco Lesson With roots in Indian, Arabic and Spanish cultures, flamenco dance is known for its sweeping arm movements and rhythmic feet stomping. Combined with singing (cante), guitar playing (toque) and handclaps (palmas), flamenco dancing has become a folk art form that is popular across the world.

Flamenco Lesson As flamenco has developed from Andalucian roots, a lesson in Córdoba is a perfect way to engage with the region’s culture. From sweeping arm movements to feet stomping that would make a bull shudder, students will be guided through the key points of this popular dance.

Madrid

This vibrant capital pulsates with life providing language students with inspiring art, culture and food. It’s easy to be enthused by the Spanish city that has become a cosmopolitan capital steeped in history. Language students will appreciate the chance to develop their linguistic skills as they explore el rastro (flea market), the El País newspaper office and the grand Palacio Real.

Language Lessons We can arrange language lessons with local teachers in the Spanish capital for your students. Bringing together grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, students can develop their linguistic skills before immersing themselves in the fantastic city of Madrid.

El País Newspaper El País is the highest-circulation daily newspaper in Spain. It was first published in May 1976, six months after the death of dictator General Franco, and became the newspaper of Spanish democracy. From reporting to design and printing, students will learn about the politics and ethics of the newspaper.

Palacio Real The Royal Palace was commissioned in the early 18th century by Felipe V, who was inspired by his childhood at Versailles with his grandfather Louis XIV. Inside, 2,800 rooms compete with each other for over-the-top opulence. The guided tour winds a mile-long path through its highlights.

Bernabéu Football Stadium Visit the 81,000-seater home of legendary football club Real Madrid for a look behind the scenes. Students can walk in the steps of the players, from the tunnel to the locker rooms, the bench, the pitch and even the presidential box.

Museo Reina Sofia Dedicated to 20th century Spanish art, the biggest draw of this museum is Picasso’s Guernica, shown with preparatory sketches and photographs of the artist at work. This exhibit gives students an appreciation of how artists create their work and respond to the world around them. Dalí, Miró, and others are also represented in film, sculpture and photographs.

Florence

Florence has long attracted language students for its beauty and archetypal image of Tuscany. Set below the rolling Fiesolean hills, the Tuscan capital offers students numerous opportunities to engage with the city’s quaint markets and iconic landmarks while also being able to develop their linguistic skills through hearing local intonation and pronunciation.

Language Lessons Our Florentine language assignment combines lessons with activities outside the classroom. All lessons at the local language schools are designed to promote practical learning experiences with the added benefit of using native Italian teachers.

Guided Walking Tour in Italian or English Provide your students with the chance to develop their listening and linguistic skills on a walking tour around the Tuscan capital. Your group will be introduced to historic monuments including the Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi Gallery and the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore.

Tuscan Vineyard and Olive Oil Tasting Tuscany is a region famous for having produced many of the world’s most loved wines. Students can take a journey into rural Tuscany and learn about the language of food and drink in the production of some of Italy’s biggest exports – wine and olive oil.

Cookery Lesson Italian cuisine has become the epitome of traditional Italy, culture and family life. Students can take part in an authentic cookery lesson to gain a true taste of the importance food has in Italian daily life while picking up culinary knowledge and skills in a beautiful Tuscan setting.

San Lorenzo Market Students love the indoor and outdoor street markets at San Lorenzo. Offering the chance to engage with local stall owners, the San Lorenzo markets enable students to enjoy unscripted and spontaneous conversations in Italian while also benefiting from hearing local intonation, accents and pronunciation.

San Gimignano and Siena Enter the historic centre of Siena which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site and enjoy the city’s famous social centre at Piazza del Campo. The walled medieval hill town of San Gimignano gives students a fantastic insight into the structures of urban life while getting a flavour of local products and an all-important gelato at Piazza della Cisterna.

The bustling markets and refined towns and cities of this sun-drenched region are the ideal place to enjoy practising the French language while dipping your toes in the southern French culture. From the idyllic streets of Nice Old Town to the glamour and luxury of Monaco, students will be able to immerse themselves in practical situations to develop their confidence and fluency in the French language.

Language Lessons Continue your students’ language development with lessons at a local language school with a native speaker. Providing the opportunity to study grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, your students can fine-tune their skills before hitting the streets of Nice.

French Cinema Evening If you want to help students brush up on their French, head to the Cinéma Rialto in Nice for non-dubbed English-language films, with French subtitles. The Rialto has an air of luxury and is known for screening indie films, new releases and classics.

Market Visit The most famous market area in Nice is the Cours Saleya in the old town. Bustling any day of the week, it serves as a flower and produce market every day but Mondays, when it becomes an antiques market. On summertime evenings, there is an arts and crafts market from 6pm.

Guided Tour in French or English Explore the narrow winding streets of the Vieille Ville; a quaint neighbourhood with a strong Italian influence. Stop at the main square, Place Rossetti, for an ice cream before wandering further into the town to gain a feel of life on the Côte d’Azur and views from Colline du Château.

Perched Villages and Grasse Perfume Factory Amongst the natural beauty of the Côte d’Azur, students will be able to explore the idyllic views of the hilltop villages that adorn the region. Your group will also learn how the Parfumerie Fragonard bottle this beauty on a tour of the factory in Grasse.

Monaco Monaco has attracted international glitterati for more than a century thanks to its staunchly maintained independence and tax-free policy. Its capital, Monte Carlo, is a world-famous symbol of glamour, with a grand casino, royal castle, luxury shops, and chandeliered palace hotels. Students can mingle with the super-rich at its many museums, monuments and gardens.

Nice, situated on the stunning Côte d’Azur, is a perfect combination of a vibrant city and beach resort. The coastal train can be used for local visits to Cannes, Antibes and Monaco.

Normandy

Normandy has long been a favourite destination for teachers wanting their students to immerse themselves in the French language. Offering numerous on-site activities, our exclusive Château du Molay provides groups with the ideal base to explore a whole host of cultural attractions including market towns, goat farms and boulangeries.

Top Excursions/Activities

French Market Assignment Each student is given a budget in Euros and has to use their French-speaking skills to buy ingredients to make a cold lunch back at the Château. After they have prepared the meal, it is then judged by the Château’s head chef.

Chèvrerie du Mesnil (Goat’s Cheese Farm) This hands-on goat farm allows students to see how dairy products such as milk and cheese are produced. It’s a great way to find out more about the traditional produce of the area and also presents a good chance to practise language skills and develop vocabulary.

Bayeux Tapestry and Town Trail Bayeux not only has the most important relic to survive from the 11th Century – the tapestry – but also a vibrant market (Wed and Sat) and many fine examples of Medieval architecture. Our Bayeux Town Trail helps students discover the history of the town in a collaborative and interactive way.

La Cité de la Mer and PenPal Project Look ahead to your Normandy tour with La Cité de la Mer’s PenPal Project. Students have the chance to share information about their cities and school life before meeting up with their French pen pals to learn about deep sea exploration and the world’s largest submarine open to the public in this maritime museum.

Boulangerie Visit A trip to a traditional French bakery lets pupils learn about the complete process of bread making. Students can actively participate and eat in or take away what they help to create. This tour is worthwhile just for the smell alone, but there are also opportunities to ask the baker some questions in French.

Château Activities Excellent on-site activities are what our experienced Château du Molay staff do best. After a day discovering the local attractions, students can enjoy a wide selection of exciting activities ranging from football to tasting frog legs, BBQs to blind trails, and cheese tasting to crêpe evenings.

Language Lessons There’s no better place to learn French than the land of the Tricolour itself! We can arrange lessons at a local language school in Paris with a native speaker giving students a chance to work on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.

Seine River Cruise Take to the River Seine for a relaxing and interesting tour of some of the main sights of Paris. Hop aboard at Pont de l’Alma and cruise past the Eiffel Tower, the Grand Palais, Notre-Dame, the Musée d’Orsay and the Louvre amongst many other sites.

E3 City Language Trails Designed around a variety of learning strategies, students develop and improve their use of the French language through tasks that stimulate social and cultural engagement. Students learn about significant Parisian sites while practicing French.

Stade de France On a tour of the national stadium of France students can wander through the changing rooms, stroll alongside the pitch, and experience the VIP stands of this huge 80,000-seater venue. Students gain an insight into the stadium’s design, construction and collection of autographed memorabilia.

Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris dominates the city skyline thanks to its position at the top of Montmartre, the highest point in Paris. The Basilica was dedicated to atone for the sins of the Paris Commune. It is a building of great beauty reflecting the hopes, fears and attitudes of fin-de-siècle France. Behind the Sacré-Cœur is the Place du Tertre with its community of artists.

Theme Parks Explore some of France’s best theme parks at the home of Parc Astérix and Disneyland Paris. From roller coasters to log flumes and ghost trains to unique themed rides, students have the chance to immerse themselves in the many exhilarating attractions depicting their favourite animated characters. Educational material is also available.

Did you know

The majority of art museums in Paris offer free or reduced entrance for school groups. You will need to supply a full names list on your establishment’s headed paper, which must include the ages and year group of each person. Organising this in advance will save time and money!

Top Excursions/Activities

The Forbidden City This palace lies at the heart of Beijing and was the home of the emperors for over 500 years. Surrounded by a 52m-wide moat, it’s an adventure to explore the labyrinth of rooms, halls and gardens with magnificent decoration and rare curiosities throughout.

The Great Wall of China One of the wonders of the world, this impressive 600km long wall was built to protect the Chinese Empire from northern invaders. An amazing feat of defensive architecture, sections within easy reach of Beijing have been restored so that visitors can walk on the wall and see the watch towers.

Temple of Heaven Once used by emperors in the Heaven worship ceremony, the temple park in Beijing is now one of the grandest examples of China’s sacrificial buildings open for tourists. First built in 1420, the temple has been enlarged and rebuilt by both the Ming and Qing dynasties.

Chinese Calligraphy Lesson The ancient art of Chinese calligraphy is still widely practised and respected in East Asian culture. It’s about capturing life through traces on silk or paper – a dynamic technique prized for both its aesthetic and expressive qualities. Students take part in a lesson by a skilled calligrapher and keep their finished work.

Kung Fu Lesson Kung Fu is an ancient martial art and one of China’s greatest cultural exports. Students really enjoy this activity because it blends an exciting new skill with a history of the famous practice. All the instructors are highly trained and tailor the lesson to all ages and abilities, ensuring everyone can get the most out of the class.

Traditional Chinese Tea House The Chinese tea house has the same cult following as our coffee shop culture. It’s a great way for students to get a taste of oriental tea tradition. The tea ceremony reveals different types of scent, colour, taste and brewing methods for individual blends and their health benefits. The ceremony is an art form and a joy to watch before enjoying a cup.

Predating Taoism and Confucianism, Heaven worship is a ritualistic religious belief in which the emperor oversees sacrifices at an altar of Heaven – the most famous being the Temple of Heaven, Beijing.
