FROM THE ASSISTANT EDITOR “I am shook from my head to my toes!” I recently heard this exclamation while working from a local coffee shop. Two women near my table were animatedly discussing their shock upon arriving to Tulsa for the first time and finding much more than the piece of flyover country they were apparently expecting. I smiled to myself, welling up with pride of course, but also silently agreeing with them — and not just because I’m biased being from Tulsa. Having recently returned from living in Europe for a year, I was also head-to-toe “shook” when I came home to find the explosion of arts, restaurants and culture

Direct importer of European antiques for over 25 years.

that had happened just since I’d left. Returning and catching up with friends at new eateries like Tina’s — a SOBO District hot spot where ’60s mod meets cafeteria kitsch — or strolling the vintagy, cowboy-cool stalls of Meadow Gold Mack’s Outpost on Route 66 gave me the same piqued feeling of curiosity I sometimes get when exploring a new city abroad; I want to find out its secret, distill its essence — what, exactly, is responsible for cultivating such a unique

charm? For Tulsa this is a bit difficult to answer, because in my lifetime this city has really lived two lives. Since graduating high school in 2007, whole swaths of dead and under-utilized space downtown and beyond have transformed into neighborhoods and districts booming with breweries, festivals, farmers

LUNCH, DINNER, WEEKEND BRUNCH KENDALL WHITTIER’S BEST PATIO! 602 S. LEWIS AVE.

markets, foodie fare, green spaces, music, art and life. Kids today are growing up with epic playground memories from days spent at Gathering Place, which was named USA Today’s Best City Park in 2024 (more on p. 16). And Greenwood Rising History Center now provides an immersive and powerful walk-through exploration of Black Wall Street and the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre, an event once kept from Tulsa’s history books (read more about Tulsa’s museums, including Greenwood Rising, starting on p. 46). I am so proud of how far Tulsa has come and all that it has to offer. Its kaleidoscope essence is formed by so many individual pieces, like big-sky sunsets and buildings frosted with art deco details; saucy barbecue joints and lunch counter burgers; live music spilling out into the streets every night of the week; and cool pop culture touchpoints like The Outsiders House Museum and Bob Dylan Center all coming together to create the whole glittering picture. In short, I think you will find yourself quite shook. Welcome to the Magic City — we wish you a happy stay and memorable exploration.

BOK CENTER

Say B-O-K (not “Bawk”). Named for Bank of Oklahoma headquartered in Tulsa, this is downtown’s mega concert and sports arena with a 19,199-seat capacity. Lovingly described as architecturally resembling a giant roll of silvery-gray duct tape, this is where greats like Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift, Justin Bieber and Cirque de Soleil have graced the stage. Words to the wise: Purchase tickets online and find parking early. Nearby Italian restaurant Ti Amo, 202 S. Cheyenne Ave., makes a lovely pre-show dinner and is walking distance from your seats inside. Enjoy the show!

MUSIC AND NIGHTLIFE

THE COLONY For over 60 years, The Colony has been a key venue in the city’s music scene, once frequented by notable musicians like Leon Russell, JJ Cale and Eric Clapton. In 2024, musicians Josh Westbrook, Cassie Latshaw and Jared Tyler acquired the club with the goal of preserving its legacy while making it a more inclusive and musician-friendly space. Standing gigs like Paul Benjaman’s Sunday Nite Thing are favorites for locals.

MERCURY LOUNGE Both daytime dive bar and nighttime music hotspot, Mercury Lounge is your neighborhood jackpot for rustic roots and Americana melodies, as well as local and touring acts that span the gamut. “We’re committed to providing a safe space for all music fans, a professional experience for the working musician and a fast drink at a fair price,” says general manager Ashley Kirkley. “We have resident artists bringing some of Tulsa’s best original music every day of the week. There are also ticketed shows featuring some of the best touring acts in the nation.” Mercury’s website offers performance schedules in addition to a merch store full of punk rock hoodies, T-shirts and more.

THE CHURCH STUDIO Legendary musician and songwriter Leon Russell purchased a Tulsa church in 1972 and renovated it. The building began life in 1915 as Grace Methodist Episcopal Church, one of the city’s earliest churches, but for a brief time it became the epicenter of a music scene that resonated well beyond the city limits to the greater world of rock ‘n’ roll. The Church became a creative space for songwriters, musicians, engineers and singers. Major industry talent such as Tom Petty, Phoebe Snow and Peter Tosh recorded at The Church Studio, along with nationally acclaimed Tulsa-based acts like The GAP Band, JJ Cale and Russell himself. The Church Studio also was the home base for Shelter Records, a record label started by Russell and British producer Denny Cordell. Many point to The Church Studio as the epicenter of what later came to be known as the Tulsa Sound: that hard-to-define, potent, shuffling stew of rockabilly, country, rock ‘n’ roll and blues associated with Russell, Cale and Eric Clapton. Musician Steve Ripley owned The Church Studio for nearly 20 years before entrepreneur Teresa Knox purchased it in 2016. Today it is a recording studio, exhibit space, event center, audio engineering school, archive for the Leon Russell and Tulsa Sound collections, and a shop for Church merch. “It’s so magical what happened here,” Knox says. “It’s just a very magical, incredible time in our city’s history.” Reserve tickets for an on-site private or group tour. Tunes at Noon is a weekly concert series happening every Saturday and many Tuesdays. Expect local singer-songwriters, bands and groups of varied genres.

CAIN’S BALLROOM After its first life as a garage, the legendary Cain’s Ballroom became the home of Western swing, jitterbug and sock hop. It was just a good old-fashioned dance hall turned legend by Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. Today the 101-year-old Cain’s hosts top acts many nights of the week, and new shows are added all the time. Be sure to wear your walking shoes at this intimate venue with a reputation for rocking as most Cain’s concerts are standing room only. Mac’s Barbecue serves its signature ‘cue inside Cain’s during most shows. Empire Slice House, Soundpony and Inner Circle Vodka Bar are neighboring hangouts for pre- and postshow antics. 423 N. PHILBROOK MUSEUM OF ART

MORGAN WELCH

One of Tulsa’s most beautiful neighborhoods is the setting for Philbrook Museum of Art, an Italianate villa built in 1927 on 23 lush acres by oilman Waite Phillips and his wife, Genevieve. Philbrook, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has evolved from a grand family estate to one of America’s finest art museums, showcasing collections from around the world. Pro tip: Visit the villa’s basement for an interactive Q&A display that chronicles the site’s history. Numerous educational programs for all ages, a diverse permanent collection, traveling exhibits and lush gardens draw more than 150,000 visitors per year. Special Philbrook events range from the Internet Cat Video Festival to the MIX cocktail battle and Films on the Lawn. 2727 S. ROCKFORD ROAD 918-748-5300 PHILBROOK.ORG

MUSEUMS AND ART SPOTS FIRST FRIDAY

On the first Friday of the month, the downtown Tulsa Arts District is abuzz. Experience free art exhibits, live music and performances from 6-9 p.m. at the First Friday Art Crawl. First Friday brings more than 3,000 Tulsans and visitors to galleries, studios and museums, providing a great opportunity to mingle with the local masses, catch a street performance or two, and generally take in Tulsa’s sights and sounds. Vendors set up at Guthrie Green to sling locally-made goods and a Tulsa artist entertains the crowds from the stage. thetulsaartsdistrict.org

Acquired by the George Kaiser Family Foundation in 2016, the Bob Dylan Archive highlights the unique artistry and worldwide cultural significance of Bob Dylan. The archive is now permanently housed at the Bob Dylan Center in the Tulsa Arts District. This three-story building faces downtown Tulsa’s hugely popular public gathering space, Guthrie Green, and depicts a rare 1965 image of Dylan, donated to the center by renowned photographer Jerry Schatzberg. The center offers curated exhibits pulled from the priceless collection of more than 100,000 items spanning Dylan’s career. 116 E. WOODY GUTHRIE CENTER

The museum, archives and performance venue honoring the Okemah-born troubadour opened in 2013 and sits in Tulsa’s Arts District across the street from Guthrie Green. OKEQ GALLERY

Oklahomans for Equality (or OkEq) was founded in 1980 by a small group of people concerned about human rights and equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. OkEq opened Oklahoma’s first LGBTQ Community Center in October 1996. Thanks to fundraising from the Pyramid Project capital campaign, OkEq opened its first permanent building, the Dennis R. Neill Equality Center, on Jan. 23, 2007. The Equality Center is home to a diverse, vibrant and engaged community of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons, knowledgeable staff and dedicated volunteers. Each month, the Equality Center gallery spotlights work by local artists. Meet the artist at their First Thursdays gallery openings, held from 6-9 p.m. on the first Thursday of every month. 621 E. TULSA GLASSBLOWING SCHOOL THE OUTSIDERS HOUSE MUSEUM

In the early ’80s, Oscar-winning director Francis Ford Coppola came to Tulsa to catapult S.E. Hinton’s memorable characters off the pages of “The Outsiders” onto the big screen. Rather than use a Hollywood back lot, the filmmaker and crew transformed an ordinary Tulsa neighborhood into a fully functioning movie set. In 1983, “The Outsiders” film was released, featuring a cast of young, talented actors who would go on to become household names. Stepping into the museum gives fans young and old a chance to see rare and never-before-seen photos, movie artifacts and more. Even if you’re a longtime fan of “The Outsiders,” you’re bound to see and learn something new. 731 N. St. Louis Ave. Private tours available by calling 918-949-1345. theoutsidershouse.com

Whether you’re a novice or a skilled glass artist, the nonprofit Tulsa Glassblowing School provides an outlet for creativity, teamwork and self-expression. In McClure Park, TGS operates an open-access hotshop and kiln studio, where it leads guests in one-time hotglass experiences, multi-week classes and private lessons. “It’s a unique experience for anyone interested in the beauty of glass art,” says TGS Executive Director Janet Duvall. The school, which partners with local schools and youth programs, also offers VETri, a therapeutic glassblowing program for military veterans, provided at no cost to them. It is one of only two such programs in the U.S. 7440 E. Seventh St. 918-582-4527 tulsaglassblowing.org Tulsa Guest Guide 51

LIVING ARTS OF TULSA

Tulsa is home to a plethora of arts events, and Living Arts of Tulsa is frequently behind them. Part venue, part facilitator of arts programming, Living Arts describes itself as “a platform for evolving ideas and aesthetics, interdisciplinarity and community empowerment through exhibitions, workshops, performances, films, lectures and education.” The New Genre Arts Festival, one of Living Arts’ biggest and most well-known events, features some of the most stimulating and thought-provoking visual and performing arts in the nation, according to festival organizers. Living Arts also presents the annual Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) Arts Festival each November. The popularity of this festival is due in large part to Tulsa’s active and considerable Hispanic and Latino communities. Expect to find traditional and contemporary Latinx dancers as well as mariachi and salsa bands. Many ofrendas erected by artists and groups honor their loved ones. 307 E. Reconciliation Way 918-585-1234 livingarts.org

GREENWOOD RISING

Greenwood Rising is a history center sharing the story of Black Wall Street before, during and after the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. From May 31-June 1, 1921, white mobs destroyed 35 blocks of the city’s prominent Black community of Greenwood. Designed by Local Projects, the team behind the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, the immersive Greenwood Rising experience begins with a video introduction. Then, visitors “cross the tracks” to learn about the history of the district. In one section, visitors take a seat in a “virtual barber’s shop” to better understand racist sentiments of the day. They also have the opportunity to make a personal commitment toward racial reconciliation that is added to a wall of positive messages upon exiting the museum. The $18.2 million Greenwood Rising center was funded with local and state dollars and private donations. Tickets are required. 23 N. Greenwood Ave. 539-867-3173 greenwoodrising.org

If you’re looking to catch an all-star orchestral performance, a production of the Tulsa Ballet or Tulsa Opera, or a touring Broadway show, the four-theater Tulsa Performing Arts Center is the venue for you. Opened in 1977, the Tulsa PAC replaced the Tulsa Theater as the City of Tulsa’s municipal auditorium with a premiere concert by Ella Fitzgerald. Celebrity Attractions, a Tulsa-based presenter and producer of national tours, presents its shows at the PAC and has one of the most successful Broadway seasons in the country, according to CEO Kristin Dotson. In recent years, the PAC Trust has emphasized “the arts for all.” Its Orbit Arts initiative partners with local organizations providing arts education and experiences to the masses. 110 E.
