What can a cookie do?

2012 Cookie Program

All Girl Scouts can benefit from the financial literacy skills that the Girl Scout Cookie Program offers. But did you know your cookie sales can help pay for Girl Scout camping programs?

Individually Registered Girl Scouts

• Earn 70-80 cents for every box of cookies sold, which is received as Girl Scout Program Reward Certificates.

• These Girl Scout Program Reward Certificates can be used to pay for camp programs, Girl Scout merchandise at our Camp Trading Posts and membership registration.

• An Individually Registered Girl Scout who sells 121 boxes of cookies could earn approximately $85 toward her camp experience!

• For complete details on how Individually Registered Girl Scouts can participate in the Girl Scout Cookie Program and earn funds that can be used toward the camp programs of her choice, please contact Deb Hazlett at 800-248-3355 ext. 1209 or dhazlett@gswpa.org.

Troop Members

• Troop members experience group planning and decision making by working with their leaders and other troop members to decide how they want to use their cookie proceeds.

• Troops can earn 70-80 cents per box.

• If a troop decides to attend a Core Camp that costs $60 per girl, they can earn the funds by each girl selling approximately 82 boxes.

• For more information on your Girl Scout’s participation in her troop’s cookie sale, please contact her troop leader.

Cookie Dough Incentive Option

All girls can choose to earn Cookie Dough in lieu of the merchandise incentives for their cookie sales. Cookie Dough can be used toward Resident Camp, Day Camp and purchases at the Camp Trading Posts and Council Shops, as well as membership registration.

Can you imagine Girl Scouting without camp?

One of my favorite parts of my job is the time I get to spend at our camps — watching the girls learn from being outdoors and talking with volunteers who love the experience just as much as the girls. Camping takes girls away from their day-to-day stresses and lets them explore the environment, try new things, make friends, and most importantly, have fun. Camping is a strong Girl Scout tradition. Our Girl Scout alumnae tell us time and time again that when they remember their times as Girl Scouts, memories of camping are vivid.

Camping is such an important part of Girl Scouting, we felt it needed to have its very own issue of S’MORE. In this issue, you’ll find tons of great programs from Bubble Fun CORE Camp at Camp Curry Creek (page 13) to Horsin’ Around at Camp Redwing (page 19). We’re excited about camp as we celebrate our 100th anniversary — and we hope you are too.

You’ll notice we’re also including information about the Girl Scout Cookie Program in this issue. Goal setting is a major part of selling cookies. Whether you’re in a troop or are an Individually Registered Girl Scout, you can use your cookie proceeds to pay for your camp experience. Remember, scholarships are also available for one camp program each year. (See the form and instructions on page 33.) So, make your wish list and discover how many boxes of cookies you need to sell to go to your favorite camp.

With so much fun at our fingertips, we need to share it. As we celebrate our 100th year in Girl Scouting, make this your year to connect with camp — and bring a friend to share the fun! It’s a great way to try Girl Scouting for the first time, or to reconnect.

You don’t need to be in a troop to go to Girl Scout Camp.

So what are you waiting for? A whole world of outdoor adventures awaits! Registration starts January 9, 2012. I hope you’ll enjoy your time at camp this summer as much as I will.

Shop Info 2012 Day Camp T-shirt & Patch Both the 2012 Day Camp T-shirt ($12) and the Patch ($2.50) will be pre-ordered again this year. Order them while registering for your camp session (on your camp registration form or online under the registration tab/camp activities). The order deadline is six weeks prior to the start of your camp session.

The Day Camp Patch is a multicolored embroidered patch with metallic thread and rhinestone bling! (Pictured at right.) The green T-shirt will have a multi-colored screen printed graphic — similar to the patch design.

Council Shop Extended Hours & Sales Get your camping gear early by shopping extended hours at most GSWPA Council Shop locations: April 21, May 5, and May 19, 2012. Check with your local shop to ensure participation.

Stop by the Trading Post at Day Camp or Resident Camp this summer. We’ll have all of your favorites: T-shirts, stuffed animals, flashlights, water bottles, jewelry and much more.

Cookie Dough and Nut Bucks are accepted at all Trading Posts.

The Trading Post gives the girls a chance to make choices, learn money management and feel confident about their purchasing decisions.

Life at Camp Types of Camps Core Camp

Enjoy the fun, friendship and adventure of CORE Camp! Girls* or groups, along with their adult chaperones,** participate in camp program opportunities designed and organized by GSWPA staff members. The CORE Camp experience provides well-balanced meals, project supplies and experienced instructors.

Day Camp

Grow, explore and have fun at Day Camp! Girls* enjoy a variety of activities like nature hikes, arts and crafts and songs and games at these council-sponsored camps conducted during the daylight hours.

Transportation may be offered.

Contact your local service unit manager for additional Day Camp opportunities.

Resident Camp

Experience the fun and adventure of summer Resident Camp! ALL girls* can register for Girl Scout Resident Camp and may even bring a friend. These overnight camping experiences offer a wide variety of activities at several of GSWPA’s properties.

Staff and volunteers provide 24-hour supervision, prepare well-balanced meals and conduct specialized activities like horseback riding, swimming and canoeing.

*Girls who are not registered as a Girl Scout will pay $12 in addition to the camp fee for the annual Girl Scout Membership. **Must go through GSWPA volunteer approval process.

General Camp Info Who Are The Camp Staff?

The camp is staffed with activity specialists, a cook, a health supervisor and specialty staff for the horse program and adventure program. Staff members are carefully selected for their skills as well as how they work with children and adults.

They participate in weeklong training sessions where they earn appropriate certifications. At CORE Camp, troop or group leaders or adult volunteers assume responsibility of girls for Safety Activity Checkpoint ratio and ACA (American Camping Association) standards.

We provide lifeguards, NRA instructors and boating and canoeing instructors — depending upon your camp’s features.

You just show up and have fun!

Health And Safety

Your camper’s health/safety is our first priority. Programs are planned and staffed according to the high standards of the Girl Scouts of the USA. Healthcare managers direct the health centers at each camp and are supported by on-call services of a local physician and emergency medical center.

If your camper is on medication, the healthcare manager will administer and document it. Campers must turn in all medication (in the original container) to the healthcare manager upon arrival at camp.

Meals At Camp

All camp meals are prepared by camp staff and served in a dining hall facility. Menus are planned based on the summer food service program guidelines (the same guidelines used in most school cafeterias). Based on the camp session’s theme, a cookout may occur. All campers receive an evening snack.

Milk is available at all meals. Campers will participate in cleanup activities after each meal.

Program Disclaimer

We reserve the right to cancel any program activity when weather conditions are unsuitable, to include but not limited to, extreme heat, thunderstorms, etc. Refunds are not given when activities are cancelled as a result of acts of God.

Visitors And Phone Calls

For safety reasons, access to camp properties is limited when camp is in session. Mail from home is welcome and will be delivered daily. Parents may leave mail at check-in for delivery during the session. Please include the following information in all mail you send: session name, session date, troop number and camper’s name.

In the event of any emergency or change in plans, please call the camp director. Camp phone numbers will be provided with your confirmation materials. Camp directors will contact the parents in case of an emergency or illness. Camp phones are limited to camp business only.

Rippling Trails’ Got Talent

Camp Curry Creek is situated on 63 acres in Brockway, in Jefferson County. Accommodations include lodges, platform tents and Adirondacks. Curry Creek flows through the property, forming a pond and creating conditions that support diverse animal and plant populations. Camp Elliott

Camp Elliott is situated on 101 acres in Lawrence County, just outside of Volant. The camp has two fully equipped lodges with kitchen, bathroom, shower and dining facilities. Experience two platform tent units, as well as two Adirondacks for primitive camping. The grounds include a swimming pool, hiking trails, a sand volleyball court and a combination basketball/tennis court. Campers can also explore the property’s archeological dig site. Camp Redwing

Built in 1923, Camp Redwing is located near Butler on 123 acres of wooded property.

Accommodations include platform tents and yurts (really cool round tents). Four of the five units have flush toilets and a washhouse.

A swinging suspension bridge connects the grounds on either side of the creek that’s used for canoeing. The camp features a riding program with two riding rings, horse trails and a stable, as well as a heated swimming pool and water slide.

Camp Singing Hills

Camp Singing Hills sits on 221 acres, in central Venango County between Oil City and Franklin. Accommodations include platform tents and yurts (really cool round tents). The wooded hills and valleys are traversed with wonderful hiking trails and bridges. Singing Hills features a multi-level challenge course, a swimming pool, an outdoor rifle and an archery range. Camp along the rim of the gorge and take a horsedrawn wagon ride along the canyon floor. Then, head to Elk County Visitors Center for a safe viewing area and a potential encounter with an Elk herd. Camp Skymeadow

Camp Skymeadow sits on 371 acres of grassy meadows and a stand of evergreens at the southern tip of Armstrong County, near Avonmore.

There are two platform tent units and four lodges with bathrooms and showers. The camp specializes in horse programs, with stables, a riding ring and riding trails. Other features include a log cabin, a pond for fishing and another pond for canoeing and a large picnic pavilion. For specific camp questions, email skymeadow@gswpa.org.

Frequently Asked Questions About Camp How will camper placement occur?

Girls are placed in camp sessions for which they are eligible (grade level, prerequisites, etc.). Placement will be made on a first-come, first-served basis until the camp session is full. Additional registrants will have an option of being placed on a wait list.

My camper wants to designate a buddy; how does this work?

Each girl can designate a single buddy. Both girls must sign up for the same camp session (not just the same date) and list each other on their individual registrations. It helps if the forms arrive on the same date. Every effort is made to honor buddy requests, but we cannot guarantee placement.

How will I know what time to be at camp and what to bring?

A confirmation packet/registration receipt will be sent stating the session(s) and date(s) for which you are registered.

These packets will be sent electronically if an email address is provided. Check your junk mail/spam for filtered emails.

What is a Tagalong and what is their fee?

Tagalongs are potty-trained children ages 3-5 and boys ages 6 and older whose parent is volunteering at Day Camp. Please register and pay the Day Camp fee of $10 for each Tagalong.

Bus fees apply for any child using transportation.

Can I apply for a scholarship to send my daughter to camp?

Yes. Please fill out the scholarship form on page 33 and submit appropriate payments, including the $50 deposit to: 5681 Route 6N Edinboro, PA 16412. You may also submit your deposit of $50 online. However, you still need to complete the scholarship form and send it to 5681 Route 6N, Edinboro, PA 16412. Once a scholarship is awarded, a refund may be approved, depending upon the amount of the financial assistance.

Is my deposit refundable?

The deposit must be paid for each camp session when you submit your registration, and it’s only refundable if the camp session(s) is cancelled or the girl is unable to be placed in a camp session. If you pay in full when you register, the deposit is still non-refundable if you cancel at a later date.

My daughter isn’t currently a Girl Scout.

Can she still attend?

Yes! For girls not currently Girl Scouts, please include the $12 membership fee in addition to the deposit.

Look for more detailed camp information in your confirmation packet after you register.

When is final payment due?

Final payment is due by May 1, 2012. Parents will receive an invoice with their confirmation packets and will not be able to attend unless complete payment is made. If final payment is not made by May 1, 2012, the space will be opened to others.

What is the Summer Camp refund policy?

A full refund, including the membership registration fee and deposit, will be given for a filled or cancelled camp session OR if financial assistance is not granted. Otherwise, full camp fees (exclusive of membership registration fee and deposit) will be refunded only upon written request when: • the camper is not able to attend a full camp session due to illness and a physician’s statement accompanies the written request for a refund. This request must be received within two weeks of the end of the camp session.

• GSWPA receives a written notification within two weeks of the end of the camp session stating the girl cannot attend due to a family emergency.

• if a girl must leave early because of an illness or family emergency, refunds will be granted on a per-diem basis.

Refunds will not be given for late arrivals, no-shows or campers dismissed for behavior issues.

Can I be a volunteer at Day Camp?

Yes, simply follow the steps below:

1. Send a completed volunteer application with the Disclosure Agreement to GSWPA Volunteer Placement, 5681 Route 6N, Edinboro, PA 16412. Volunteer placement is not guaranteed and is subject to a background check, availability and camp staffing needs.

2. Send your child’s summer camp registration form and membership registration form (if applicable), with the $50 deposit to 5681 Route 6N Edinboro, PA 16412. If the child’s camp fee exceeds the $50 deposit, it must be paid in full by May 1, 2012, or two weeks prior to the start of the camp session. Bus fees apply for any adult or child using this provided transportation.

3. Once Day Camp has occurred, and if you attended the entire week, a refund or partial refund of the discounted child’s Day Camp fee will be issued.

Can a girl volunteer at Day Camp?

Yes, if you completed any of the following trainings, you are eligible to assist at Day Camp: Program Aide (PA), volunteer-in-training (VIT) or counselor-in-training (CIT).

Assignment is subject to staffing needs, availability and proof of completion of training. Please note: some camps will not accept 6th grade program aides. Bus fees apply forany girl using this provided transportation.

Scholarship Form SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Scholarships are available to GIRLS ONLY who:

• are registered members of Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania (GSWPA).

• are new to GSWPA for the Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) membership registration.

Scholarships may be requested at any time at least three (3) weeks prior to an event. Scholarships for the membership fee may be requested at any time.

Scholarships may be requested and awarded for each of the following, once per membership year: • Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) membership registration fee • One council-operated event as listed on our online calendar and registration website, or in the fall/winter or spring/summer issues of S’MORE • One council-sponsored summer Day Camp • One summer Resident Camp (including CORE and family camp) • GSUSA Destinations Scholarships may be granted for other national or council girl opportunities and will be made available based on the availability of funds.

Parents/guardians are to complete the scholarship application and include it with the membership and/or event/camp registration form. Submit them together along with the appropriate deposit and/or fee.

For events/programs, the Girl Scout’s family will be expected to pay a minimum of 10 percent of the fee.

For summer camp (including Resident, CORE and family camp), the Girl Scout’s family will be expected to pay the registration deposit plus 10 percent of the total camp fee.

Indicate total annual household income and all income sources. All information provided on the application is strictly confidential.

Scholarships are awarded based both on apparent need and the availability of funds.

GSWPA will determine the grant amount based on the family income, circumstances and budgetary limitations.

Scholarships will not be granted when there is an outstanding debt (i.e. NSF check, delinquent Fall Product or Cookie Sale monies and/or debts to the Council Shop).

Scholarships are non-transferable and not redeemable for cash.

The parent/guardian will be notified by letter regarding the scholarship amount granted.

Notification for Accounts Receivable Conversion (ARC): Checks received by Girl Scout Western Pennsylvania may be converted into an electronic debit for clearing. Register Online In 6 Steps!

Step 1—Sign up.

Go to www.gswpa.org and click on the Calendar & Registration button at the top of the page.

Step 2—Activate your account – or your daughter’s account.

(If you attempt to activate any account without success, please contact the GSWPA Help Desk at 800-248-3355 ext. 1460 or helpdesk@gswpa.org. If you’re registering multiple people, you must activate each new account individually.)

• Select the New Visitor box in the middle of the screen.

• Enter the name of the person you’re registering. (First name, last name, and email address. These should all match the information currently in our membership database if she’s already a registered member.)

• A message will be sent to the email address provided.

• Open the email and select the link in the body of the email.

• You’ll be asked to create a username and password.

(Password must be 7 characters with no symbols.)

• Choose a hint question and enter the answer.

• Click “Create Account.”

• You’ll receive an email confirmation and will be logged into the registration portion of the site. The name of the person you’re registering will appear in the top right corner of the Web page.

Step 3—Log in once the account is activated.

Once the account has been activated, use the username and password to log in and register for future events, programs or trainings!

Step 4—Select camp activities, programs and events and/or adult trainings and events.

To view GSWPA camp activities, programs and events or adult trainings and events, you can: • Select the appropriate section on the left side of your screen, and • Select the different links on the page.

You’ll find specific program information, as well as the registration deadline and number of spaces available. Simply click on the green name listed. A detailed page will appear with the name and description.

• Click “Add To Cart.”

Step 5—Verify your shopping cart.

Your product will appear in the shopping cart. At this point, you can click on “Continue Shopping” or “Check Out.” Be sure to review your information to make sure it’s correct.

Step 6—Pay for your order.

If you’re registering your daughter for an event, her name and address must appear in the “Ship to Address” field.

• Enter payment information.

• Select “Process My Order.”

• Print your receipt.

Congratulations! You’ve successfully registered for an activity! *If you’re paying with Cookie Dough, Nut Bucks, Program Award Certificates, or if applying for a scholarship, please use registration forms.

Registration Tips Registration Deadlines

• Camp Registration starts January 9, 2012 (unless noted otherwise). Most registration deadlines are three weeks in advance of the start date, so please check each camp listing carefully.

• Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Camps fill quickly — so be sure to register early. Add-ons after the registration deadline will be made as space is available.

• Troop leaders: when going with girls to an event, please keep in mind adequate adultto-girl ratios. (You can find this on page 15 of Volunteer Essentials.)

Payment Options

A $50 deposit is due at the time of registration.

Full payment is due by May 1, 2012. If you’re mailing in your registration, please send your payment or scholarship request (see the Scholarship Form on page 33) with the Registration Form. If reserving multiple events, please send one check per event.

Girls ages 5-17 who aren’t currently Girl Scouts must add $12 to the event fee to cover the annual membership dues for Girl Scouts of the USA. The membership year runs from Oct. 1-Sept. 30.

Once she’s registered as a Girl Scout, she’ll receive information about many more Girl Scout events and opportunities.

Camp-Specific Details

Detailed confirmation materials will be sent directly to each participant — after we receive your final camp payment. Receipt of confirmation materials doesn’t mean we’ve met the minimum participants for the event to take place.

When attending an event, please bring the completed Camp Health History form with you.

You can download this form at www.gswpa.org.

It’s also included in the Camp Confirmation Packet you receive after registration.

All registration correspondence, including confirmation materials, happens via email if one has been provided. (If you’re using paper forms, please write neatly.)

All incoming registration checks are receipted/ processed before being entered into our registration system. Please do not assume that you’re registered for an event if the check is cashed.

Once an event is full, registrations are placed on a waiting list. If this happens to you, we’ll notify you of this status and you’ll be able to (1) remain on the waiting list, (2) reschedule or (3) cancel. New sessions may be added if the camp fills quickly.

If for some reason your Girl Scout is unable to attend camp, please contact 800-248-3355 ext. 1460 or registrar@gswpa.org so someone else on the waiting list can enjoy camp.

Come join the fun at your favorite camp for a Camp Work Weekend!

Who: All Girl Scouts and registered volunteers who are approved through our Volunteer Application process.

When: May 4-6, 2012 Where: Camp Conshatawba, Camp Curry Creek, Camp Elliot, Camp Hawthorne Ridge, Camp Singing Hills, Camp Skymeadow, Camp Redwing, Camp Resting Waters and Camp Roy Weller.

Team up with other girls and adults working on projects throughout the camp. Bring your Girl Scout(s) and join the camp’s site team in repairing and refreshing the camp property. Registered members can stay overnight at no charge. (You’re welcome to stay Friday, Saturday or both nights.)

A hot breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served Saturday and a continental breakfast served on Sunday. In the evening, join us for sports and games followed by a campfire. We have the job for you!

HELP WANTED: Summer camp positions will be open at Camps Skymeadow, Conshatawba, Elliott, Redwing, Hawthorne Ridge, Roy Weller and Singing Hills for summer 2012. Summer camp employees will participate in pre-camp training and assist in the daily operations of camp. Applicants must successfully pass the required background checks and have the ability to work as a team member with a flexible schedule and live in a camp community. Room and board are provided.

These positions are available for ages 15 and older: junior counselors, kitchen aides, barn aides and lifeguards.

Ages 18 and older: positions include assistant camp director, health supervisor, horseback riding director, assistant horseback riding director, horseback riding instructor, waterfront director, assistant waterfront director, canoe instructor, kitchen manager, cook, program director, nature instructor, arts & crafts instructor, activity specialist, adventure staff, unit leader and unit counselor (not all positions are available at every camp).
