MagNut Program Starts Oct. 1 Our annual fall program of magazine orders and nuts/candy gives each registered Girl Scout the chance to set a goal and earn proceeds. Ask your troop leader for your girl packet at your September meeting so you can see all the rewards available to earn. (All rewards are cumulative.)

Treats for Troops – Share 2012-2013 Patch

MagNut 2012 Timeline:

Last year, almost 9,000 cans of Honey Roasted Peanuts were sent to our U.S. Military. This year, the girls can participate in a virtual sale of nuts that will be shipped directly to our U.S. Military. Girls who have six or more donations will receive the Share 2012-2013 patch. The Share Program helps customers not interested in purchasing product for their own use to participate in the MagNut Program and to share with our men and women in the military.

Monday, Oct. 1 MagNut Program begins Week of Nov. 12 Delivery of nuts and candy

Program Reward Certificates – For Indie Girls

What Can MagNut Do?

Indie Girl Scouts (girls who participate in Girl Scouting without being in a troop) will receive GS Program Reward Certificates as their proceeds. Use these certificates for your yearly registration fee; GSWPA and local service unit events, series or camping opportunities; Gold Award projects; Girl Scout Shop purchases; and GSUSA destinations. For details on how Indies can participate in the Girl Scout MagNut Program and earn rewards, please contact Deb Hazlett at 800-248-3355 ext. 1209 or dhazlett@gswpa.org. For more information about the MagNut Program, e-mail MagNut@gswpa.org.

Last year, troops and girls set goals resulting in troops earning more than $410,000. They used the proceeds in many ways, including: • Girl Scout Washington D.C. Sing Along, • GSWPA 100th Celebration in Pittsburgh, • Day Camp and GS camping programs, • making and donating Build-A-Bears™ to nursing home residents, • caring for animals at local shelters and • making blankets for the homeless.

New This Issue

We know it’s almost impossible to fit everything you want to do into your busy schedule. That’s why GSWPA is introducing new program opportunities to accommodate girls’ active lifestyles. LEADERS: Among our exciting new offerings are Programs by Request. These

special GSWPA programs can be provided to your group on a date and in a location that you choose. Programs by Request can be requested by troop leaders, service unit team members and other volunteers. Choose a program from the suggested list on page 35-36, or work with GSWPA staff to design a program that meets your specific needs. Along with Programs by Request, GSWPA now offers Program Kits. These kits are great for troops, groups or service units who want to run programs on their own. Each kit includes written program instructions and non-consumable materials. Look for a list of available kits and descriptions on page 34.

Not a member yet? Not a problem! Membership is easy and affordable. Visit gswpa.org and click Register Online. Remember, scholarships are available for membership and programs, so start making your program wish list! Look for an application on page 45.

GIRLS, LEADERS & PARENTS: Travel by Progression is also new – offering girls travel trips at various levels of difficulty. Trips range from day trips to several days, (30 miles away to a state away) and are designed for every age group to help girls develop and enhance their love of travel. Younger girls can try smaller, shorter trips to get comfortable with traveling, while older girls can embark on longer and more adventurous excursions. Some exciting trips include traveling to New York City, visiting a spa or snow tubing. Check out the rest of the exciting places you can go on page 37. Of course, you’ll still find tons of great, scheduled S’more Fun Events. These events are listed alphabetically to make it easier to choose your favorite activities. The Date Planner, organized by grade level, and the County Event Planner, are still included.

Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania is proud to feature our own girls, adult members and camp properties in this publication.

Discover Volunteerism Volunteer of the Year

Special congratulations to our first annual Volunteer of the Year, Kriss Svidro (Washington). Kriss has been involved with Girl Scouts for more than 30 years and was nominated for this award by both her service unit team (Tingoocqua Service Unit) and the Gold Award Committee for her exemplary service as a volunteer in her community and throughout the council by mentoring girls through the Gold Award process. Our beautiful one-of-a-kind 100th Anniversary Volunteer of the Year pin was designed by Sarah Schoolcraft (Edinboro), Girl Scout alumna and volunteer. Do you know a volunteer who has made a significant impact on the council with her/his time, talent and treasure in the last service year? Be sure to nominate them for the 2013 Volunteer of the Year Award. Only one special volunteer will be selected for this prestigious award. Nominations will be accepted Oct. 1, 2012-March 15, 2013. Congratulations to GSWPA’s 100th Anniversary pin contest winner, Amy Robinson. Amy won a night’s lodging at the Grand Celebration by wearing her 100th Anniversary Pin to MagNut Training. Amy’s name was drawn from the names of all qualifiers who proudly wore their 100th Anniversary pins at designated council meetings.

Calling all former Girl Scouts!

Super Saturday (Erie) Coming this fall 2012 to Erie, PA! Date/Time: Saturday, Sept. 22, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Location: GSWPA Edinboro Office, 5681 Route 6N, Edinboro, PA 16412 Cost: TBD This should be a fun-filled day for existing leaders and new recruits! Come learn, engage and share in the GSWPA training traditions. You’ll be inspired by other leaders who continue to influence our young girl leaders of tomorrow! You’ll be able to learn in a think-tank facility that includes several breakout rooms, a gymnasium and a 250-seat auditorium. A light breakfast and brown bag lunch will be provided. The creative juices should really be flowing. Come join us for this GSWPA Super Saturday! Free Parking & babysitting available.

One hundred years ago, Juliette Gordon Low imagined that Girl Scouts could be “the magic thread” that would connect girls everywhere – and for 50 million women, the ties have never been stronger. Girl Scout greats – our Girl Scouts Alumnae – come from all walks of life. They are inspirational volunteers, business and political leaders, scientists and inventors, devoted parents, and celebrities pursuing their dreams. They all have this in common – they’re Girl Scouts, just like you. The stories of today’s generation of girls are being written at this very moment…And the missing link in the journey from girl to future leader may be you!

As a Girl Scout Alum, would you like to: • SHARE your Girl Scout story and experiences? • RECONNECT with old Girl Scout friends and make new ones? • LEARN what Girl Scouts Western Pennsylvania is doing today to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place? • SUPPORT current Girl Scouts by sharing your special skills as a volunteer or mentor or by sponsoring an event or girl? • PARTICIPATE in adult Girl Scout activities and events with like-minded women? Reconnect with Girl Scouting through our Alumnae Association. For more information about GSWPA’s Alumnae Association, visit gswpa.org/alumnae or alumnae@gswpa.org.

It’s a great time to be a Girl Scout Volunteer to teach girls to be daring, skilled and competitive like Princess Merida and The Hunger Games’ Katniss Everdeen.

Volunteer Recruitment

Long before THE HUNGER GAMES and Disney/Pixar’s BRAVE… Girl Scouts offered the strategic outdoor skills that girls love such as archery, outdoor survival skills, climbing, fire-building, rope skills, campfire cooking and more! Do you have outdoor certifications and/or skills that you can share with girls so they can be like Princess Merida or Katniss Everdeen? Archery, life guarding, canoeing, backpacking, camping, fishing, etc.? Are you passionate about outdoor activities? Share your skills and passions with a Girl Scout! Our council encompasses some beautiful areas of Pennsylvania – the perfect setting to foster and inspire a connection to the outdoors in young girls. Whether your passion is swimming, fishing, archery or camping, you can share it with the girls. Volunteer opportunities can fit around most any schedule. Contact adulttraining@gswpa.org to begin your outdoor experience.
