> EVOLUTION of the earth, nature and human life in hand drawn, 2d stop motion animation. > CULTURE of the world, illustrations of countries with their lifestyle, religion, celebrations etc. represented in a book. > DIVERSITY of life, portrayed in a short live action film, highlighting different classes, lifestyles and locations.

> INFOGRAPHIC cards explaining what the earth is, it’s features (Continents, Landscape, Nature, Weather) and the it’s habitants. (Humans, Animals, Plants)

Richard Hamilton is a collage artist and painter, his most notable work is “What is it that makes today’s home so different, so appealing?” in Richard’s work, i’m looking at the contrast between the images he uses in collages. I appreciate the time spent collecting images, and the thought behind arranging them in such a way that complements each component. It also adds life to a piece, and doesn’t limit colour and pattern. I’m wanting to put the same contrast in my illustrations when coming up with compositions for a country’s culture. I’m hoping that the drawings i produce will be clear and easily distinguishable, but also detailed and intricate to show all aspects of culture.

Illustrations of countries and their cultures e

Papa New Guinea (ranked the most culturally divers country in the world)

’t Although these compositions are quite artistic, i don a believe this idea fully shows all aspects of culture of country.

Animation work for my stop animation idea

adobe flash Whilst working on colouring and inking all the frames i’ve drawn, i played around on Adobe Flash and created a short 14second film of my storyboards out of around 70ish frames. I really enjoyed animating this way, i felt comfortable doing it and it was rather easy r me to do.

infographics what are infographics? Infographics are visual representations of information, data and/or knowledge in a graphic form what are they for? Commonly Infographics are used in commonly used in publications to show the weather, as well as maps, site plans, and graphs for statistical data. They can also be a poster and anything of sorts. MY IDEA My idea is to create a deck of playing cards each with different facts about the world on, but still be able to fuction as a deck of cards. These facts would include statistics and knowledge such as: How many people live in poverty, How many countries there are, Population of certain cities, Advances in technology etcetera. This Idea is both factual and fun, meeting the brief and also giving a chance for viewers to immerse themselves more in information.

PLAYING CARDS Playing Cards were invented in China, they were the basis of change between paper sheets and paper rolls. The cards were used as a form of paper currency in their earliest form, a deck would be split into 4 sets and traded between players. In the 14th century, Playing Cards moved their way to Europe with sets matching the similiar Tarot cards at the time, these sets consisted of 10 ‘spot’ cards and 3 ‘court’ cards, this is the same amount we have today. Their purpose at the start was to tell a story, all 10 spot cards had a motif depicting a story and also the number it reprsented, all decks were painfully painted by hand. As they developed, they became printed (by wooden stanps) and in about 1480 we had the basis of the four sets we have today, this base set originated from France. By the end of the 15th century, the french had revolutionised how we saw playing cards, the court cards referenced real people and the spot cards dropped their images and were replaced with inritrcate designs corrresponding to the number. After centuries of further development, by the 18th century most countries had their desired depiction of a deck of Playing Cards, one of the most notable final changes was Europe adding the Joker to help with various games played and also for spares if any cards are missing.

I want to revisit the older meaning of playing cards and mix this with infographics. Much like showing a story, i want to show facts about the earth, it’s people and everything else. My 10 spot cards will contain a small illustration relating to the fact it’s representing, and my court cards will be historical and modern-day people who have had great impact on the earth. These will be all be corresponding to what set i give them. I’m thinking of using Spades to represent the landscape and the planet itself, whilst diamonds will be all about money and how it’s spent/recieved.

The colour is just a rough representation of the colours i may choose, i’m also considering using the classic red/blue/black/ yellow/white palette old card decks use.

At the time i thought i had a pretty good outcome but i feel it was to be more contextual rather than just a deck of cards. I wanted to make the cards more immersive and functional so i altered my playing cards so they could also be used as trading cards. I added QR barcodes onto the back of all cards, when if scanned by a smartphone or smart device a wiki page of information related will popup and, if it was a court card which was scanned, an animation documenting

their achievements/life while they were alive. Adding the barcodes gives access to the internet allowing much more information to be shown and also gives possibilities of computer generated arts, in this case animation, to help depict earth’s diversity. I wanted my cards to build relationships between communities, in particular humans and extra-terrestrial beings whilst also depicting earth’s diverse population.

upon scanning the qr barcodes situtated on the back of the cards, a wiki page followed by an animation related to that figure will pop-up on your smartphone or device.
