01 Birdwatching is in fashion and Monfragüe is the place to do it; the observation of birds in the wild as a leisure activity is one of the most popular with our Spanish and international visitors, who devoutly make their pilgrimage to this sanctuary for all feathered creatures that is the Monfragüe biosphere reserve. If you still haven't done so you are just in time to find out what flying is all about. Don't miss this great chance!

The kingdom of the cranes
Dehesa
Each year some 130,000 cranes flee the low temperatures of northern Europe and travel to Extremadura to spend the winter here.
Birdwatching on the reserve is interesting in any season, but the return every year of thousands of cranes to spend the winter with us is always a special moment. A spectacle of nature that is not easily forgo en. From any of the secondary roads of the reserve you can observe groups of these magnificent birds which visit us every year from central and northern Europe and feed on croplands and dehesas.

Arrocampo Ornithological Park
Portilla del Tiétar viewpoint
FIO Extremadura
One of the birds most frequently observed by ornithologists. You can easily see it at Peñafalcón, its favourite spot.
03
Located near the village of Saucedilla, the Arrocampo reservoir has become one of the ornithological reference points of the reserve and the region. It holds species as exciting and unusual in Extremadura as the water rail, bi ern, purple heron, spoonbill, squacco heron and osprey. The area's information centre will give you plenty of information and the keys to the 5 observatories on the two recommended routes.
Bearded tit Arrocampo is practically the only place in Extremadura where this rare and beautiful species can be seen.
Scan the code and access "Monfragüe", in Destino España, a report on Radio Televisión Española.
The jewel in the crown: one of the most endangered species which has its sanctuary here with 12 pairs.

Vultures at Peña Falcón
The Salto del Gitano, Portilla del Tiétar and Castle of Monfragüe viewpoints are the best places on the Iberian peninsula to spot large birds. At the Portilla del Tiétar viewpoint, for example, you'll find the majestic imperial eagle and at the Salto del Gitano, the park's emblematic viewpoint, you'll mostly see griffon vultures, but also Egyptian vultures, black storks, peregrine falcons... The early hours of the morning and dusk are especially spectacular due to the massive take-offs and landings of the vultures.
Imperial eagle
The immediacy of the natural park, which occupies the centre of the reserve, guarantees like no other place in the Iberian Peninsula the presence of large birds of prey that will appear as you pass time and time again: black, griffon, and Egyptian vultures, and imperial, golden, Bonelli's, and short-toed eagles... Winter or summer visitors, residents or birds of passage; small, medium, or large; there are birds everywhere. However, let us spell out for you some of the keys to birdwatching in Monfragüe.

The cranes are everywhere, but the publiclyowned Haza de la Concepción estate is one of the best places to see them. This estate maintains traditional agricultural practices on dehesas of evergreen oaks and irrigation crops.
