Welcome to Turlock, the second-largest community in Stanislaus County, located in the “Heart of the Valley.” Since 1949, when the Turlock Chamber of Commerce was first chartered, its members have worked to improve the vitality and quality of life in the greater Turlock area. Over the past 62 years Turlock has grown to over 70,000 residents, and still retains its small-town charm and diverse agricultural heritage and hospitality, all the while conforming to the ever-changing dynamics of the area. This past year was a significant year for business development; several ‘new businesses’ are making their home here while others are expanding. The Turlock community is pleased to see the development in all areas of business, from retail to production. The Turlock Chamber of Commerce has had an outstanding year, and has received wonderful recognition for the effort of its board, staff, volunteers and partners. It has taken an active role in ensuring that growth and economic stability continues in a positive manner. The goal is continually being realized through teamwork with community leaders, through the support of area businesses and through the hard work of volunteers. Turlock is proud to be the home of MedicAlert and California State University Stanislaus, as well as the Stanislaus County Fair Grounds. Recreation abounds in Turlock with more than 14 soccer fields, three volleyball courts, four softball fields and one Hardball Field, and you can visit Turlock Lake just a few miles out of town. Turlock is proud to be considered a family oriented community. As the voice of business in Turlock, the Chamber’s goal is to advocate for our members’ best interests and for those of our community. Being Turlock’s number one business resource, citizens look to the Chamber for the area's economic wellbeing. That is why we seek to have a major impact on business, the creation of wealth and future growth of the Greater Turlock Area.
2013 is going to be an exciting year and I appreciate the opportunity to serve the business community as the Chairman of the Turlock Chamber of Commerce. We have a great group of people assembled for the board of directors who will work hard to promote a strong local economy. Turlock is an amazing city and a great place to raise a family and run a business. It offers an outstanding quality of life and has created a place where people can live, work, learn, shop and play. As a small business owner in Turlock, I appreciate what it means to be living and working in a business friendly community. To name a few, Turlock has: 1) A welcoming attitude to people, families and businesses. 2) Pro-business approach by local government officials. 3) CSU Stanislaus for work force training and education. 4) An active and supportive Chamber of Commerce I also appreciate the burden of rising health care costs being placed on businesses around the country. Most recent estimates for 2011 annual premiums for employer-sponsored family health coverage average over $15,000 per year ($11,000 covered by employers and $4,000 covered by employees). With the Supreme Court decision to uphold the 2010 health reform law we will see even more of the cost burden shifted to individual workers and businesses. In order to offset these external cost pressures we must invest in well designed, coordinated employee wellness initiatives, rather that more costly disease management and injury care. The Turlock Chamber of Commerce is leading the way with creative new health care initiatives for member businesses. Fortunately for Turlock we also have a community hospital with excellent physicians. The Turlock Chamber of Commerce will work hard to promote local businesses and local community. They will provide networking opportunities and represent the interests of business with government. The Chamber will take the appropriate steps to ensure economic growth and therefore economic stability.

nown as the heart of California’s Central Valley, Turlock is centered among California’s most popular tourism destinations with access to San Francisco, Yosemite Park, Monterey Bay, as well as Turlock’s many cultural activities that draw thousands of visitors each year. Turlock is adjacent to major highways and interstates including Hwy 99 and I-5, which is located just 15 miles west of Turlock.

he Westside Industrial Specific Plan includes 2,600 acres that will accommodate and nurture the development of a major industrial/commercial center in Turlock’s industrial west side. The city of Turlock has prepared WISP to facilitate economic and job development through orderly growth and development. The plan was prepared during a time of significant change in the structure of the national economy. The plan was adopted in 2006. A Certified Environmental Impact Report has also been adopted, saving significant time and money for those that want to develop. Many types of manufacturing jobs have declined nationally or have been transferred elsewhere. However, the essential need for food and agricultural products indicate an opportunity to create a center for an enduring and
sustainable economy based on agricultural products and related processes and services. It is anticipated that the benefits available from WISP and the Enterprise Zone will stimulate industrial development. In addition to the development of WISP, the city has invested $15 million in backbone infrastructure improvements to provide “shovel ready” sites for industrial development. A significant portion of the Greater Turlock Area, including the entire WISP area, is located in Stanislaus County’s Enterprise Zone. The Enterprise Zone is a state-sponsored tax benefit program designed to reduce the cost of doing business. There are several areas in Turlock designated for retail and office use, including a recently
renovated and viable downtown area property along Hwy. 99 and areas near Emanuel Medical Center, as well as commercial areas on Geer Rd., Golden State Blvd. and Countryside Plaza. he history of how Turlock was named varies; however, some believe it originated from the term ‘turlough,’ an Irish dry lake. Founded on December 22, 1871 by prominent grain farmer John William Mitchell, the city was comprised of a post office, a depot, a grain warehouse and a few other buildings. Mitchell and his brother were successful businessmen, buying land and developing large herds of cattle and sheep that were sold to gold miners and others as they arrived. They were also leaders in wheat farming and cultivated tracts of land under the tenant system. Eventually, the Mitchell’s owned most of the area, over 100,000 acres, from Keyes to Atwater. In the early 20th century, 20-acre lots from the Mitchell estate were sold for $20 an acre. Turlock experienced economic and agricultural growth and development in the early 1900’s and was incorporated in 1908. A thriving community with a diverse population, that brought their skills, ideas, capital, culture and religious beliefs to this area. Turlock prospered and became the hub of activity throughout the end of the 19th century. A Board of Trade (known today as the Turlock Chamber of Commerce) was formed, a school district, a newspaper and numerous religious and civic organizations. By 1960 businesses had grown and Turlock became home to California State University Stanislaus. Today with a population over 70,000, Turlock has achieved their early city planning goals of creating a safe environment, a strong school system and maintaining their hometown atmosphere. Economically sound and agriculturally elite, Turlock continues to promote growth and development that complements both the city’s business and industry, as well as the needs of its residents.
