This is always an exciting time for 209 Magazine, as our Best of 209 feature continues to grow in reach and popularity. With the recent closings due to the pandemic, we were uncertain of the response our annual Best of 209 survey would receive. We were amazed that not only did we receive just as many votes as last year, but exceeded that
number by 50,000! This response shows how much support local businesses and organizations continue to have throughout all the communities represented in the 209 area. Please congratulate all the winners the next time you patronize their business. Along with the Best of 209 winners, this issue features a number of businesses that are thriving despite the recent adversity and ideas for fun and safe summer activities, keeping fit and creating a relaxing outdoor space. We welcome your comments, calendar events and stories. We hope you will support the businesses and charities that have chosen to partner with us. We appreciate them and look forward to being the most relevant magazine in your home, a place called 209.

By VINCE REMBULAT 209 Staff Writer No doubt the newly opened Ice Cream Emporium in downtown Ripon was influenced by the likes of Farrell’s, Ghiradelli in San Francisco, and The Gibson Girl on Disneyland Main Street USA. Owner Monica ‘Moe’ Willey mentioned that during the planning of the ice cream parlor at 120 W. Main St. “We took a lot from the different (places) that we enjoy as far ice cream and the different stores we liked,” said Moe, who credits her husband Bob for helping provide the menu items. Ice Cream Emporium offers 42 gourmet flavors, including the old standbys of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, to such selections as White Pistachio, Matcha Green Tea, Pralines & Cream, Dulce De Leche, Strawberry Cheesecake, World Serious Brownies, Coconut Almond Joy, Sea Salt Caramel Truffle and White Grasshopper, to name a few. Her daughter, Katie, is the general manager. Ice Cream Emporium had a soft opening on Friday, July 17. “What a happy day,” said Ripon Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, Kelly Donohue. he coolest place on a 105-degree day in the 209 will soon be the same place it will be the warmest on the drabbest day of lingering Tule fog that keeps the temperatures in the 40s round the clock. The place is the Great Wolf Lodge Resort opening Sept. 1. Describing Great Wolf as “just a water park” is about as accurate as describing the imposing El Capitan overlooking Yosemite Valley a “just a rock.” Everything about the Great Wolf in Manteca from the 95,000-square-foot indoor waterpark — the second largest in the 17-location operation being the Anaheim Great Wolf — is tailored so both parents and kids can enjoy their stay at true resort location. Unlike with an outdoor water park where you have to deal with wind, scorching sun, chilly weather, oppressive heat or rain and have a limited mid-spring to late summer window to enjoy, it’s always a pleasant 82 degrees with the water two degrees warmer. Extensive skylights keep the water park bright without having to worry about sun burn.

But if you want to work on your tan there is a massive outdoor guest pool complete with shelves you can partially submerse yourself in water on a lounge. If you opt to eschew the outdoor pool to cram in a much slide and water play time as possible, Great Wolf will more than accommodate you. They use a green/red light system that allows personnel to move guests quickly — and safely — onto the slides. Conveyors take the tubes to the start of the slides. A visit to Great Wolf is designed as a staycation. Accessing the 13 indoor waterpark attractions that are open 24/7, 365 days a year from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily comes with the booking of a room overnight that gives guests two full days of waterpark access. If you opt to access every possible hour you can in the water park, there is a guest luggage storage area and locker rooms so before and after your check in and out times you can splash around without packing up your vehicle. And these are just your average hotel rooms. For starters there are 500 rooms making the Great Wolf located along the 120 Bypass on Manteca and accessed by the Airport Way exit the largest hotel ever built in the Great Central Valley stretching from Bakersfield to Redding. Many of the rooms are theme suites with “Wolf Dens” and “Kids Cabins” for children with their own bunk beds and TVs. That way mom and dad can watch Netflix and even opt for in-room alcoholic beverages while the kids can watch cartoons and
such in their own suite in a suite. The Great Wolf experience starts when you drive up to the resort that features a northern lodge design. The lobby has a grand fireplace that also serves as the backdrop for the nightly story time featuring Great Wolf characters such as Wiley the Wolf. To minimize check in time to avoid having antsy kids, Great Wolf “pack members” — the moniker given to resort staff — armed with devices greet and process guests if lines start to form to make sure check in time is minimized. There are also eight dining options ranging from traditional sit down and casual dining to fast food as well grab and go opens. The 55,000-square-foot family entertainment center features eight attractions including a ropes course, candy store, miniature golf, bowling, an arcade and second most popular Great Wolf attraction for kids — MagiQuest. Great Wolf can teach Harry Potter a thing or two about magical fun thanks to MagiQuest. Young and old can use ‘magical wands’ to embark on a magical quest throughout the lodge. You determine the play time that can range from 30 minutes to three hours. You can take a break and come back hours later or the next day. You can even return with your wand months later to finish games or purchase new ones. The dining options and games area are open to the general public meaning you do not need to be resort guests to access them. Once

Great Wolf Manteca is up and running for a number of months, one-day water park passes will be available based on occupancy and will feature demand pricing. Great Wolf caps water park access to guarantee a true resort experience and avoid having guests spending time in lines. Besides story time kids that are hotel guests can access yoga classes, interactive science experiments, a high energy dance party and a crafts area dubbed “Paw Projects” and more at no additional charge. For those seeking to spend more time in the water park or at the outdoor pool and want a bit of privacy, Great Wolf rents cabanas. They come with two loungestyle chairs, a 20-inch flat screen TV, mini-fridge with non-alcoholic beverages, plus plenty of towels as well as Great Wolf Lodge playing cards for a mini retreat of sorts for families. Part of the safety and convenience of the resort stay are wristbands that have chips. Guests can have specific wristbands activated so they can be scanned to allow for the purchase of food, drink and items in the gift shop that are charged to your room without having to worry about lugging around a wallet and purse and worrying about keeping them secure when accessing the water park and other attractions. The Manteca resort also has a 12,000-square-foot conference center. That makes it the second largest conference center in terms of available space in the same location in the Northern San Joaquin Valley after the Modesto Centre Plaza. It includes a main ballroom that can be split in thirds or used as one giant venue that has a capacity of 360 people in a classroom setting, 450 people in a banquet configuration, and 600 for theater-style seating. Additional smaller spaces means Great Wolf, with the right mixture of booked events, can accommodate over 900 people at the same time. ■

hen Jerry and Paula Baker’s youngest son was 9 years old they got the heartbreaking diagnosis that he had a brain tumor. Jerry Baker describes it as a lightning strike moment, in that it altered the course of all their lives in a single moment. Five years after the diagnosis and five surgeries later, their son came out of it tumor-free. And while they were beyond grateful for the end result, they were a little saddened when they thought about some of the formative experiences their son had missed out on because of having to be in the hospital.

“He didn’t really get a chance to be a kid,” Baker said. In that little twinge of sadness an idea was born that they could give kids going through similar medical issues a chance to experience one of the staples of childhood - summer camp. “We assumed we’d be all about kids like ours, but it turns out that’s not much of a market,” Baker said of the initial idea for the camp. They did, however, see that there was a need to create something special for the underserved population of adults with medical and/or developmental needs and with that, Camp Tuolumne Trails came to life. Located in Groveland on 80 acres surrounded by the mountains and woodlands, Camp Tuolumne Trails gives people a chance to delve into the camp experience by adapting it all to fit their needs. The Bakers believe camp is a unique experience shared in songs, games, explorations and nights around a camp-
fire and they wanted to make sure that experience was open to everyone. “We are in the business of overcoming adversity,” Baker said. Camp Tuolumne Trails offers campers all the essentials of summer camp - hikes, swimming, team games, music and arts and crafts, while also having a medical program to meet the needs of the campers. Counselors come from all over the globe and undergo a rigorous training program. Baker said the benefits of the camp are multi-fold and believes the experience the counselors gain is invaluable to their general understanding of people with special and medical needs. “They walk away with an understanding of these challenges that they wouldn’t have gotten somewhere else,” Baker said. Typically, Camp Tuolumne Trails offers six sessions during the summer and fills the off-season working with different school districts for outdoor education and special projects with 209MAGAZINE.COM

various organizations, like the Wounded Warrior Project. However, this is most definitely not a typical year. The Bakers and their staff have set up COVID-19 precautions and are changing the structure of the camp. Rather than just campers coming for a stay, Camp Tuolumne Trails is renting out their cabins for whole family stays. “This summer, we have seen families rejuvenated by a weekend away outside of their homes,” Baker said. “We have had the opportunity to chase after this need and have served over 30 families with socially distanced guidelines in place. We have provided a safe, welcoming and fully accessible space for families to have time outside they have so desperately needed.” The camp also is upgrading the internet at the site to offer people a work in the woods stay. ■ For more information about Camp Tuolumne Trails visit http://www.tuolumnetrails.org or call (209) 962-7534.

here is usually great times to be had in the 209 during the summer. Yes, it’s almost always hot, but the list of fun to be had is long. Concerts, summer theater, cruising in a boat on the Delta, hiking the trails, food festivals and winery tours just to name a few. But just because we’re all having to stay home this summer doesn’t mean that the 209 doesn’t have some options for some summer fun. ■
One popular summer activity is heading to one of the many community theaters in the 209 and watching the summer shows. Theaters have had to close their doors for the time being, but some are finding ways to keep the show happening. In the case of Changing Faces in Lodi, they’re bringing the show to the people. They’ve been hosting pop-up shows in backyards, neighborhoods and other outdoor spots that allow for social distancing. The group is planning on performing pop-up shows of “Robin Hood” starting in August and continuing through October. Let’s face it, we’re all doing a lot more cooking these days and perhaps your meals have fallen into a rut. Ron Erickson is here with some help. 209 Magazine has previously written about Erickson and his Yankee Hill Winery and Cooking School in Columbia. Erickson’s classes are always entertaining and the end result is scrumptious. But since he can’t conduct his classes in person, he’s turning to a virtual platform. Yankee Hill is offering online cooking classes via YouTube and Facebook for free. The classes focus on everyday items, so no searching for hard to find ingredients. To find the links to the cooking videos visit https://yankeehillwinery.com.
Getting out and exploring the outdoors is an activity that harkens back to summer camp for many people and fortunately is one of the safe activities people can do right now. People should be staying in their own county, but the good thing is that all the counties in the 209 region have some great options for hiking. Need help finding some local trails? Check out the app All Trails.
When it gets too hot, one of the best way to escape the heat is to visit some of the great art galleries that can be found in the 209. Unfortunately, an in person visit is not possible right now, but that doesn’t mean a life without art. Galleries are hosting shows online and some are taking annual events to the virtual world. The Calaveras County Art Council is planning on making their annual Artist Studio Tour an online event this year. Typically, the event is a two-day tour in September, but this year it will be September through October and will include filmed studio tours and images of the artwork. ots of folks flock to Knights Ferry to stroll across the historic covered bridge, enjoy dinner on the veranda of the River’s Edge restaurant, drop a paddle in the water or take a summer swim in the ever-chilly waters of the Stanislaus River. But many folks have no idea that Ulysses S. Grant, future Civil War general and president of the United States, fell in love with the quaint town as well. Grant was drawn to Knights Ferry three times from 1852 to 1854 because of his wife’s brothers – who realized there was money to be made in accommodating all of those flocking from Stockton to the gold fields around Sonora – moved there. Three brothers of Julia Dent Grant, whom Grant married on Aug. 22, 1848, arrived in town not long after William Knight established it in 1848. It was an important stop at the Stanislaus River during the height of the Gold Rush of 1849. When Knight was killed in a Nov. 9, 1849 shooting, his business enterprises were left to partner Captain James Vantine. John Dent and Lewis Dent later partnered
up with Vantine to add a restaurant, store and boarding house to capture more business. Eventually Vantine left town, leaving the Dents in charge of the ferry. George Dent joined his brothers as they became the most prominent people in the village. At one time the Dents tried to rename the town “Dentville,” an idea that failed to gain traction. In 1852 Grant, then 30, sailing aboard the “Golden Gate” from Panama to San Francisco. He was stationed in nearby Benicia as a brevet captain with the 4th Infantry Regiment. In the nine years since he had graduated West Point, Grant had served frontier duty in Texas and fought in 10 battles during the Mexican-American War which earned him decoration for gallantry in action. When ordered to California, Grant left pregnant Julia and their first son with his parents in Illinois. The voyage to Panama in a cramped ship was hellish with a seventh of the troops and family members dying of malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, cholera and dysentery. During his short stay in Benicia, 209MAGAZINE.COM

Grant was quartered at a wooden set of buildings where the present-day AMPORTS parking lot is today. They burned in 1922. Grant wasted no time in visiting his brothers-in-law. His stays were for a week at a time. In those days, traveling from Benicia to Knights Ferry required boarding a steamer to Stockton, disembarking and riding overland. It’s believed that Grant rode on the back of a mule by way of Sonora Road, traveling through Farmington and Eugene. Grant stayed with Lewis and Annie Dent in their house, built in 1851, which still stands at the corner of Ellen and Dean streets. Grant, who was miserable about being separated from his young family, was awestruck by the Dents’ businesses in Knights Ferry. He wrote in his diary that he had dreams of quitting the Army – which offered meager pay for his rank – and either joining the Dents or setting up business enterprises of his own. In May 1854 he visited Knights Ferry for the last time. He boarded a ship from San Francisco on June 1 for New York City, passing overland through Nicaragua and arriving on

June 25. He spent time farming in Missouri before leading the Union to victory during the Civil War. Grant was elected president in 1868 and served two terms. Contrary to often-repeated claim, there is no evidence that Grant designed the covered bridge or its predecessor, the Locke bridge. The first bridge was erected over the river in 1857 because the ferry no longer suited the heavy demands of travel. Because the Stanislaus River had no flood controls back then and could swell to uncontrollable proportions in winter, the first bridge was wiped out in virtually the same weather conditions that hit California in 1997 – heavy snowpack melted rapidly by warm Pineapple Express winds from the south. In mid-January 1862 flood waters not only damaged Knights Ferry, the Valley was covered from Stockton to Merced. The same torrent of water dislodged the bridge at Two Mile Bar upstream, sweeping large

Julia was self-conscious about her lazy eye and when she suggested surgery, Grant told her: “Did I not see you and fall in love with you with these same eyes? timbers into the first Knights Ferry Bridge leaving it battered and splintered. Until the present covered bridge was completed in 1863, the old ferry had been placed back into service. It’s said the Dents built the first dam on the Stanislaus River in August 1853 for the purposes of a grist and saw mill. In the spring of 1854, Grant was transferred from Benicia to Fort Humboldt, another cold, wet, windy and isolated frontier outpost. He became more morose and continued to drink. Grant and several companies from the 4th Infantry sailed to the Columbia River in Oregon. He eventually returned to San Francisco twice. Because he missed his family and his pay was inadequate to bring them to join him, a profoundly depressed Grant resigned from the Army on July 31, 1854. He returned to New York via San Francisco and the Horn of South America on a sailing ship, never
returning to Benicia. In his autobiography, Grant wrote: “I left the Pacific coast very much attached to it, and with the full expectation of making it my future home. That expectation and that hope remains uppermost in my mind until the Lieutenant-Generalcy bill was introduced into Congress the winter of 1863-64. The passage of that bill, and my promotion, blasted my last hope of ever becoming a citizen of the further West.” The Dents sold off their enterprises and left Knights Ferry for good in 1856. David Locke purchased the Dent ferry and replaced it with a wooden bridge. Lewis T. Dent was part of the Mormon Battalion in 1847 and had lived in San Diego and Monterey where he was a judge and one of the writers of the California State Constitution. He served as postmaster in Knights Ferry and moved to Stockton in 1858

to practice law. After the Civil War, he raised cotton in Mississippi and Louisiana. In 1869 Lewis Dent was nominated for governor of Mississippi. He moved to Washington D.C. to practice law until he died in 1874. He is buried in St. Louis’ Bellefontaine Cemetery. It’s there you’ll also find the grave of John Cromwell Dent who passed away in 1889. George Wrenshall Dent came to California’s Calaveras County in 1851 to mine for gold. It was reported that he served in the state Senate in 1858, representing San Joaquin and Stanislaus counties and may have gone to Tuolumne County after leaving Knights Ferry. For 16 years George Dent was appraiser of customs in San Francisco, an appointment he received from brother-in-law President Grant. He died in 1899 in Berkeley and is buried at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Colma. ■

he Carnegie Arts Center may not be able to open its doors to the public at this time, but that isn’t stopping the organization from sharing arts with the community. The Carnegie Arts Center recently selected the winners for their annual Carnegie Art Showcase and has plans on showing the exhibit in a virtual format. Additionally, the Center is calling for entries for a new exhibition and is working with Stanislaus State on gathering proposals for a staircase mural in the university’s new library. The Carnegie Art Showcase is an annual all-media juried exhibition that is open to entries from artists, age 18 and over, residing in California. A panel of three professional artists selected 84 works from among more than 215 entries for this year’s exhibition. The exhibition includes pieces by 52 artists from 23 different communities from across the region and the state. Works include paintings, drawings, prints, photographs, sculptures, ceramics, digital art and mixed media. Best of Show was awarded to Eddie O. Rodriguez of Merced, for the 2017 oil on canvas work “Grazie Mille.” Awards of Excellence were awarded to Richard Gomez of Atwater and Vivian Patton of Groveland. Awards of Merit were given to Frank Ayala of Merced, Carol David of Modesto, and Geri Patterson-Kutras of Morgan Hill. Honorable Mentions went to Ray Briones of Modesto, John Claes of Turlock, Susan Conner of Altaville, Marcy Duarte of Modesto, Jennifer Van
of Denair, and Christopher Viney of Atwater. A virtual version of the exhibition, with images of each of the accepted works, will be available soon for viewing on the Carnegie’s website, said Carnegie Art Center Director Lisa McDermott. For those individuals creating art right now, the Carnegie Arts Center is seeking entries for a new show. In This Time is a juried exhibition for the Carnegie’s Lobby Galleries that will explore creative responses to the current state of our communities, our nation and our world. “Throughout history, artists have confronted, examined and responded to the issues of their moment,” McDermott said in a release. “Today, the crises that are actively defining this time – from quarantine to climate change, from social justice to economic uncertainty— fundamentally impact our lives. This moment calls out for artists to help us collectively make sense of who and where we are. In This Time we rely on our creative community to explore the issues we confront. Through the arts we have opportunities to connect, heal, share diverse perspectives, and envision possibilities for change.” Entries can be done in: Oils and Acrylics, photography and digital media, prints, drawings, watercolors, collage and mixed media, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, and decorative arts. The exhibition will award a grand prize of $400, two awards of merit of $100 each and four honorable mentions of $50 each. The jurors will be McDermott and Stella Bertalis, the Modesto poet laureate

and author of “Alkali Sink: Poems.” Entries are due Sept. 20. the dates of exhibition are planned for Oct. 14 to Jan. 17, 2021. All the rules and requirements can be found at https://www. carnegieartsturlock.org/call-for-entries. For those individuals who work in a larger format, the Carnegie Arts Center is partnering with Stanislaus State for a public art mural. This call is for an interior Grand Staircase mural proposal in the renovated Vasché Library Building. The mural is projected to be on the south wall in the Library lobby near the staircase and approximately 805 sf in size. The estimated budget for the mural is $25,000. The interior theme of the Library will be a celebration of the region’s agricultural roots. The Grand Staircase mural should reflect that theme through the unique landscape of the San Joaquin Valley’s farmland. Proposals should demonstrate the wealth of the region’s natural resources as well as the diversity of agricultural production. Independent artists specializing in two-dimensional mediums may choose to submit proposals for consideration. Artists may submit letters of interest and qualifications, along with images or project renderings, to be considered for installation. Artists are encouraged to submit work that complements the university’s architecture and supports its mission. ■ For details on submitting a proposal visit www.csustan.edu/universitycommittee-public-art/call-proposals.

ince retiring 21 years ago as an educator, Turlock resident Rhett Regina Owings has been able to give her time over to one of her lifelong passions: her artistry. “Painting and creating means everything to me,” Owings said. “My art is like having children. I have imagined it, created it, nurtured it and watched my art grow and develop. I have always loved to create art as long as I can remember. It relaxes me, lifts my spirit and gives me great joy. When someone buys my work that is so encouraging to think they like the art I have created and want to enjoy it in their own home. This makes me want to explore more creative adventures.” On any particular day, Owings might be found in her studio working on a painting, but if she’s given the opportunity, she prefers the practice of
plein air painting, and in the 209, she’s found plenty of inspiration. “My favorite subjects are things in nature, landscapes, flowers and birds,” Owings said. “I have painted in the Central Valley, the Monterey coast
and in the foothills and Sierras. Plein air painting (painting on location) is wonderful. I am in the fresh air listen-

ing to the sounds of nature and doing my best to capture the color which the camera cannot do.” Owings works with a variety of mediums, including pastels, collage and mono printing but her favorite medium to work with are oil paints. “I love the way it can be mixed into so many colors and can be blended and pushed around on the palette and canvas,” Owings said. Within the 209 region, Owings art has been shown at galleries in Turlock, Tracy, Murphys, Modesto, Sonora, Stockton and areas outside the 209, including Saratoga and Pacific Grove. Her works have garnered her many awards in local shows and her work is owned by collectors throughout the United States, Australia, Canada, and Europe. Owings studied art in college, but

she says her real education in the field came after she retired and took up painting full-time. “I have studied with many wellknown artists including Dean Packer, Susan Sarback, Brian Blood, Tim Horn, Peggy Kroll Roberts, Peter Adams and many others,” Owings said. “I have attended three Plein Air Conferences where I have met some great artists from around the world. I belong to several painting groups where we have workshops and lessons, and I have a vast collection of painting DVDs and books from wellknown artists which are all helpful for learning. There are so many more opportunities for people today who want to learn about art then there were when I was growing up. “One of the things I had to learn was that art is a business, just like any other business,” Owings said. “Artists create a product and try to sell it in order to create more art, pay for their supplies, framing, advertising, and workshops. When I was teaching school, I really had no idea that this was the way the art world worked. College classes rarely include marketing and business classes to go with the art classes. I have had to learn this by taking workshops, reading books, and talking to other artists.” For Owings, the creative process starts with an idea that finds its way onto her sketch pad. And from there the art begins to take shape. “I spend a lot of time making

sketches, looking at photographs and going outside to study nature,” Owings said. “When I have an idea in my head I try to explore various ways it might work in a painting. Sometimes I just like to play with color, shapes and textures. “I guess my favorite is the actual working on the painting,” Owings said. “Painting is solving problems. How big should that be? What to put into the painting and what to leave out? How to lead the eye through the composition? How to capture the color of the sky? And a million other problems to solve. When I have finished the painting, I let it rest to think about it for a while. Sometimes I go back and rework parts, but mostly I am ready to move on. Each painting is a practice for the next painting and each painting gives me ideas for another one.” Owings does do paintings on commission and note cards from some of her paintings can be purchased at the Greenery Nursery and Carnegie Art Center, both in Turlock, the Mistlin Art Gallery in Modesto, Creative Cookware in Murphys and the Bookworks in Pacific Grove. ■ While the galleries are closed, the best options for viewing Owings’ works are online at www.RhettsStudio.com or on her Etsy shop at www. veryone knows that when it is time to celebrate it is time to ‘Pop the Bubbly!’ There is something about popping the cork and hearing the fizz from a bottle that sets the tone for a celebration. Although the mandatory COVID-19 shutdown caused a few complications for David and Mandi Westerback, they were able to open their Champagne Bar in Murphys called Pop the Bubbly where each day they have a reason to celebrate. They are both a little country chic so the historic Thompson building suited them perfectly with its rustic charm. Popping open a French Chateau de Bligny they toasted and gave each other a kiss and expressed how much their little corner in Murphys has meant to them and how great the community has been. “Everything that you see is stuff about us, about who we are,” Mandi explained. “I was raised very country and he was raised country. He built everything from scratch out of our garage. It is all redwood and local. Local cut raw wood and he made every bit of it.” They acquired the space in February and began their transition with the anticipation of upcoming annual events like Murphys Irish Days to help them build their income for their new business. Then COVID-19 hit and everyone had to shut down and events were canceled. “When they shut everything down, we literally panicked because we had to take every bit of our savings, everything that we worked hard for and had to throw it all into this and had no money,” stated Mandi. “With things shut down we could not get permitting or people out here to work on things. We were constantly communicating with our customers online and I would just let them know with photos and everything how we were doing and we were very honest.”

“Everyone came out of the woodwork calling us, buying bottles, getting food, it was emotional,” added David. “It was really neat. Our customers were literally throwing tips bigger than what they were purchasing at us.” Since their hard beginnings they have recovered and were able to open the first week of May despite all their struggles. Adjusting once again to the seemingly always changing situation they continue to take all safety precautions to ensure their customers are safe by keeping everything sanitized along with spacing tables for the proper social distancing guidelines. They also have an outdoor patio for customers to enjoy while taking in the fresh air. With the thought in mind to create a place that is different than a bar but more of a relaxing, safe, comfortable, space that couples, mothers, daughters, or friends can enjoy a few hours and hang out is the environment that the Westerbacks have created. Their clientele consists of many locals and people that want a spot to celebrate events like engagements, bridal showers, anniversaries and birthdays. When they had a woman come in with a book, order a glass of champagne and a bite to eat then grab a seat and read, they knew they were creating something special. Then they had a couple of Army doctors that were on leave from Afghanistan sit at the end of the bar with a bottle of champagne playing a game of chess over several hours; they knew they created the place they had envisioned. “We love to hang out with everybody and learn everybody’s story,” said Mandi. “We love to chat. I am at the point in my life where I want to be with my husband, I want to have fun and I want to connect with people. People have stories if you just listen. It is so much fun.” They serve beer, wine and champagne but don’t worry if you are looking for a cocktail; they’ve got you covered. Mandi decided to do some research and found a creative way with help from the family to make custom cocktails out of the bubbly. The importance of the Champagne Cocktails is to make them taste like their inspiration which led to a few fun nights of experimenting for the whole family. Some of the customer favorites are the French Mule Mosa which is a bubbly spin on the Moscow Mule without the vodka
and tastes just like a mule. The Murphys Sunrise is another crowd pleaser that takes after a tequila sunrise without the tequila and the Mai-Tai Mosa not only tastes like a traditional Mai Tai but has the coloring to prove it, without the rum of course. The Strawberry-Brr-ita is not only pretty but it tastes like a strawberry margarita even though it is made with strawberry sparkling wine, a little margarita mix, and a full squeeze of lime. Just about all their champagne cocktails have a story of creation. Although their custom champagne cocktails are a hit their specialty is the Champagne flights. The flights are in specific categories that have been tailored by Mandi to have your palate take flight with the different flavors of bubbly. “The flights could have something that is really soft, a little bit sweeter, drier, tart or a little bit creamy all in the same flight,” she noted. “We designed it that way so that people can start learning what their palate is for champagne. So, we want people to come in and broaden their spectrum and get to know what they really want to get off the shelf.” They offer a small food menu for those that want a bite to eat while they enjoy their libations. For breakfast they have bagels, for lunch they have sandwiches like the Cubano, and an option for dinner could be the BBQ Pulled Pork. With the fluid situation of the pandemic they are constantly adjusting at Pop the Bubbly with curbside pickup, limited occupancy, the outdoor patio and following all the safety guidelines, but have no plans to close. ■

here is a hidden gem of a restaurant in Hughson named Agave Azul Kitchen & Tequila bar that has a very extensive menu created from family recipes, fresh ingredients and innovative twists on traditional items. Three sisters had an idea to open a restaurant in their hometown and eight years ago it finally came to fruition. Currently, sisters Sandra and Gabriela Lujan are running the restaurant along with head chef Alfredo Arevalo and a staff of about 40 employees including servers, bartenders, and the kitchen crew. Agave Azul has seen success through the years and serving up homemade flour tortillas has kept guests coming back from near and far along with their tasty dishes and great service. Restaurants and bars have been hit hard through the pandemic with closures and changing regulations on a constant basis. Agave Azul has tried to adjust through all the changes and looks forward to the day that they can reopen their dining room. “In the beginning when everything closed down it was awful,” said Sandra. “We came in that Monday and I started crying. We did not know the future of our business. We had to lay off most of our employees and that was difficult. It was just me, my sister and Alfredo and then a couple more employees came in when we started doing take out.” They have managed to stay viable with their takeout orders and outdoor patio, but it was a real struggle. The takeout orders kept them afloat and they were able to bring back more employees and although it was a lot of work and changed their business model a bit, it was worth it. When they reopened with limited seating, they were able to get creative and extend their outdoor patio into the parking lot with canopies and plants to continue to offer guests an inviting dining experience. “People were being more supportive than ever,” added Sandra about reopening. “I think we have been busier at times than we were before. It has been a huge blessing. So when things are changing every day we just take it day by day right now. There is nothing else you can do, really. It is really sad to see other businesses close because I know how much hard work it takes.” Originally the sisters worked the family business taking fruit and vegetables from their farm to farmer’s markets in the Bay Area, Lodi and Tracy. This is where the customer service skills were honed. The family farm grows peaches, nectarines, cherries, plums, oranges, apricots, kiwis, apples and grapes. They wanted something
of their own and were originally going to open a taqueria but then decided to open a restaurant. They bring the same farm fresh produce right to their Agave Azul restaurant along with goods from other local farmers. “We never realized how much we were going to grow,” expressed Sandra. “We have people that come here from Turlock, Modesto, Lodi, Manteca and even the Bay Area like Livermore. So it hasn’t been all locals but Hughson has been very supportive. It is still Mexican food but it is not always traditional Mexican.” The big menu is filled with family recipes from their grandma and mother with some creations from the sisters. They like to travel and get ideas from other areas but also put their own signature on the dishes served. Although they are a Mexican restaurant, Sandra said that what they bring is something a little different. Some guest favorites are the chorizo, Agave Enchiladas, Tacos Caseros, Pollo Con Crema y Rajas, or the very popular Molcajete. Grandma’s chorizo has been a hit at the restaurant and they do not plan to change it in any way. The Agave Enchiladas are made just the way their mom makes it with shredded chicken, cheese; pan fried, dipped in red sauce and topped with cabbage, avocado, tomatoes, sour cream and cotija cheese. The Tacos Caseros are made with a handmade corn tortilla that is crispy with potatoes and cheese. Pollo Con Crema y Rajas is a creamy dish with grilled chicken, poblano chiles, onions, and rich cream. Their version of the molcajete is filled with cheese, homemade tomatillo sauce and your choice of meat. “For the past two years we have been doing brunch and it has been going really well,” Sandra said. “Our weekends are really busy and Sundays are a mad house. Everything that we cook is fresh; we don’t buy anything premade. We make our own salsas and if we are out of something we are out. We make sure our quality is great and we do not want anything to come out sloppy.” They are open from Tuesday through Sunday and although the future is unknown, they plan to continue to serve delicious food to their customers. Catering is available as well. The handmade fresh tortillas will continue to roll out at Agave. “I love what I do,” Sandra stated. “I love coming to work every day. I love our employees. The people that work here are passionate about what they do. I love our customers. We have met so many people that have become friends. We have been very blessed.” For the full menu visit agave-azul.com or for more information call 209-883-0800 or visit Instagram or Facebook. ■

or local wine enthusiasts it seems like it has been ages since they have connected with their favorite wineries or discovered new ones in 209’s numerous wine country destinations. While the pandemic has dramatically changed our opportunities to taste wines or tour facilities at the hundreds of wine producing spots in our area code, it has not diminished our appreciation or pleasures of a nice bottle. anything during the past four months, our wine purchases and consumption have been on an increase. Super markets are recording record wine sales as we are now forced to enjoy a glass at home rather in the pleasant surroundings of a local winery, a favorite restaurant, or nearby wine bar. “This does not mean you shouldn’t enjoy or support local producers in this time of winery closures,” said Tom

numerous wine regions. Wineries in Amador, Calaveras, San Joaquin and Tuolumne counties have had to find new ways to establish new customers while maintaining connections with former loyal patrons.” While most supermarkets shelves are dominated by larger California producers or popular labels from Napa or Sonoma, many markets have offering a growing number of wines from our local wineries. Bender has been faced with new ways of introducing his shoppers to a wider range of wines since the store has had to close their wine bar which featured a weekly changing tasting opportunity. “We enjoyed featuring a local region and pouring their wines because they were small enough to have a story behind them. In many cases our patrons were actually familiar with the winemaker or owner. I now encourage customers to continue enjoying Barbera from Amador County or an Old Vine Zin from Lodi. Or get away from the usual Chardonnay or Cabernet routine and try an unfamiliar Spanish or Italian grape type being grown and produced in our region.” So, support your local favorites the next time you go searching for a wine at the market and savor its special qualities while looking forward to visiting the winery again in the near future. ■

s summer reigns and restless masses yearn to get outside, the pandemic still requires restrictions at national parks and other popular recreation areas. But options abound for those in the know. Rather than fight for a Yosemite reservation or a Lake Tahoe parking space, consider some of these lesserknown Sierra Nevada outings where you can stretch your legs without rubbing too many elbows. ■
A four-mile loop circles the picturesque Kinney Lakes near Ebbetts Pass. Anglers will enjoy fishing the lakes and anyone will enjoy the clean air and High Sierra view. Children and dogs should like it too. Take Highway 4 east for about 15 miles from Bear Valley. There’s roadside parking at the pass and in a trailhead lot half a mile east of it. Hike north on the Pacific Crest Trail past Sherrold Lake. If you want to bag a summit, Ebbetts Peak stands just a few hundred feet above to the south, requiring a short off-trail scramble. Otherwise, continue northwest to

Upper Kinney Lake. Various use trails connect from the PCT, circling the lake and leading to Lower Kinney Lake. Many options exist to circle the lakes and return to the road, either out and back or on a loop. Fun facts: Miwuk and Washoe Indians traveled the Ebbetts Pass corridor, as did Jedediah Smith, the first non-native to cross the Sierra Nevada, surviving a fierce snowstorm in 1827. John “Snowshoe” Thompson delivered mail through this area on his cross-country skis from 1856 to 1876.

Carson Pass, Eldorado National Forest Picturesque mountains and lakes abound on a 5.8-mile loop with minimal elevation gain. This hike will make you feel like you’re deep within the wilderness but only takes half a day. It’s dog legal but might be a bit much for young kids. Park beside Highway 88 at Carson Pass, about five miles east of Kirkwood, where a $5 parking
fee applies in summer and fall. Hike south through the woods on the Pacific Crest Trail through Mokelumne Wilderness, passing Frog Lake. Turn right at the trail junction toward Winnemucca Lake, leaving the PCT and passing Elephants Back on your left. Winnemucca Lake provides a great opportunity for pictures of neighboring mountain Round Top.

The ambitious can scamper up Elephants Back, Round Top or both. But to complete the loop, turn north towards Woods Lake and then follow a path beside the highway back to Carson Pass. Fun facts: Winnemucca Lake apparently takes its name from a Paiute chief in Nevada. The name means “one moccasin.”

Horsetail Falls, Eldorado National Forest If you’ve ever driven to Lake Tahoe on Highway 50, you’ve probably seen the lovely Horsetail Falls north of the road. Instead of zooming past, stop for a change and appreciate it. This outing doesn’t qualify
as a secret, but it’s less crowded than other short and scenic hikes within the Lake Tahoe Basin. Kids can do it and it’s dog legal. Park at Pyramid Creek Trailhead, two miles east of Strawberry, where a $5 parking applies. A
HORSETAIL FALLS A short and scenic hike leads to the base of Horsetail Falls from Highway 50.
1.5-mile loop hike leads through the meadows below the waterfall and features a viewing area of the cascades. Hikers can also extend the outing by trekking to the waterfall for a closer look, adding about a mile.
Fun facts: The Pony Express delivered mail through this river canyon in the 1860s, and noted free solo rock climber Alex Honnold made his first ropeless ascents across the highway at Lovers Leap.
While the pandemic continues, officials discourage unnecessary travel, so recreation options close to home are best. However, scientists have measured lower coronavirus infection rates at high elevations. So, if you live near the mountains or are passing through them anyway, you’d might as well enjoy some outdoors time away from large crowds. 209MAGAZINE.COM

hen I think about fishing during the months of August/ September I’m reminded about my family’s annual camping trip while growing up. We used to camp once a year, right before we headed back to school. Most of the time we would camp at lake Camanche, Amador or Lake Pardee. The weather was always hot, and the fishing was always good. Most importantly, the camping trip was something I looked forward to all year long. Like Christmas, I would often count the days until we would go camping. Once there, I would often fish all day long and late into the night. ■

The Lakes August and September are some of the busiest times on our local lakes. Fortunately, we have some fishing only lakes that enable us to get away from the crowds. No matter where you decide to go, one thing is for sure — there will be a lot of smaller fish up shallow. Growing up, this was the time of year when I used to walk the bank all day and catch bluegill. I would often dig up worms in my backyard the night before and often never had enough. Backs of coves with brush piles remain high percentage areas. For bass, the morning bite is worth getting up early for. In the morning the bass are looking to feed on the surface. Some of the best topwater fishing often happens in the morning hours. Some of my favorites are small poppers and Whopper Ploppers. As the day starts to warm up, I usually begin searching for the bait with my boat’s electronics. Usually the bait can be found around main lake points. Once finding the bait I’ll fish a variety of baits until I find out what they’re biting on. Some of those baits are ned rigs, swing head jigs, neko rigged Senko’s, or possibly a jigging spoon. For trout and kokanee every year is different. Some years the kokanee are still biting and some years the kokanee aren’t biting, but the trout are. This year has been difficult to figure out so far. Some of our best kokanee lakes aren’t doing so well while others are. The best advice that I can give you is to get there early and find the bait. Once finding the bait, troll a lure such as a small chrome Triple Teaser. The Triple Teaser is one of my favorite baits to troll for locating fish.

The Delta Fishing on the Delta this time of year can be very exciting. Many people wait for the weather to cool down before they start targeting striped bass. What they don’t know is that they’re possibly missing out on some great action. It’s important to keep a close eye on water temperature and sea lion activity. With the longer nights, the water will begin to slightly cool, causing schools of bait, sea lions and striped bass to migrate through the Delta. Some of the best areas to target striped bass are around Franks Tract, Sherman Island and Liberty Island while using live bait, trolling deep diving Rapalas, Top Water Walking Baits, Glide Baits or Swim Baits. Fishing for largemouth bass is all about finding the grass and current. The biggest bass will still be around the thickest grass next to current. The smaller bass will be feeding heavily on just about anything. This time of year is a great time to get lots of bits on reaction baits as the bass will be feeding in preparation for the winter. For catfish, the nights are still warm enough to fish. catfish on the Delta like to position themselves in slack water, either behind a big rock or on the inside of a bend in the levee. One of my favorite baits for catfish is raw prawn meat found at the local grocery store. It’s just as effective as any other bait and it stays on the hook.

ALL NOWORK PLAY By ANGELINA MARTIN
S
taying committed to any fitness routine requires dedication, willpower and a whole lot of stamina. Some might say that living through a global pandemic requires those three things as well, so trying to stay fit as the coronavirus surges through both our communities and our thoughts is like attempting to keep a ship afloat that already has a hole in the bottom. With gyms closing, reopening and then closing again, I’ve taken to the great outdoors in order to try and stay in shape over the past few months — something incredibly important
for not only my physical well-being, but my mental health as well. As the economy struggles and coronavirus restrictions continue to change, the one thing I do have control over is my health. My local park has served as my gym as of late, keeping me safe from COVID-19 and ensuring that if I do catch the virus, I’ve kept my body healthy enough to put up a fair fight. When the pandemic first began and my gym closed, I was met with an interesting dilemma. I love to lift weights, but I don’t own any myself. Sure, I had a couple of eight-pound dumbbells lying around, but they don’t
209MAGAZINE.COM

really weigh enough to challenge me. After some research, I realized that resistance bands were an affordable option that would give me the workouts I desired. Now, the park is my gym. Instead of hopping on the treadmill to warm up before I workout, I jog or walk a couple of laps around the park. Instead of walking over to the weight rack, I pull out one of my resistance bands, loop it around a piece of playground equipment and get to work. I no longer utilize different machines at the gym; now, I take advantage of different features at the park. Benches

aren’t for sitting, they’re for weighted step-ups or tricep dips. Rather than endlessly marching on the stair stepper, I walk up and down the staircase on the playground — taking care not to touch anything as I move. Sure, the “new normal” felt a little bit weird at first, but now I’m even considering cancelling my gym membership altogether — even after the pandemic — to continue working out underneath the 209 sun. When my gym was able to reopen for a couple of weeks before consequently shutting down again, it was sensibly required that all gymgoers wear masks. I returned to the gym and wore a mask to keep myself and others safe, but it wasn’t easy to catch my breath as I gasped in between heavy squats. Working out by yourself at the park is simple if you do the research. There’s an endless catalog of workout ideas on the internet that utilize resistance bands (I purchased mine from Home Gym) or whatever at-home equipment you already have on hand. Sometimes, I spend my night before a morning workout scrolling through Instagram and looking up posts under the “#resistancebandsworkout” tag. There are countless apps, too, that can help you remain committed to your workout during the pandemic. Since I’m not being charged for my monthly gym membership, I’ve been putting that money toward the Kayla Itsines SWEAT App which provides daily workouts, nutritional advice and motivational goals that have so far kept me on track. For runners, I recommend the Zombies, Run App. As you embark on your daily jog, this app makes sure you keep a good pace by talking you through a “The Walking Dead”-esque mission filled with zombie chases and an interesting storyline. These days, the park has become my home away from home. I see the same people walking their dog every morning, and when I workout in the afternoon I’ve become accustomed to
seeing the same group of boys on the court playing basketball. Down on the grass, I’ve noticed high school athletes coming out by themselves, or with a parent, to complete the drills they normally would be doing alongside their team. We’re all doing things a little bit differently these days, but there is still a community to be found even outside the gym when it comes to working out. All of us at the park have one thing in common when we step outside our homes every day: we’re doing the best we can with what we have, and we know one day we’ll be back in the gym. But for now, we’ll make ourselves better as we hope the world recovers. ■ 209MAGAZINE.COM

ome has always been a place of rest and regeneration, but recently it has also become a sanctuary from the pandemic and other concerns of the world. According to Joe Garnica of Creative Water Gardens in Escalon, this is the perfect time to create a truly peaceful space in your yard or patio area with a water feature. “Now is the time to really enjoy being around your house and take pride in where you live and your community,” said Garnica. Creative Water Gardens is known across the state for its ponds, but the landscape retailer also has a large number of fountains and other garden supplies. Creative Water Gardens sells a pond kit that includes a pump and filter for those do-it-yourselfers and offers full-service design, construction and landscape services. Ponds can include fish and other wildlife or just be a water feature alone. “Every yard needs a focal point, like a fountain or a 209MAGAZINE.COM

pond,” he said. “A fountain is ideal; you can put it anywhere… Open up your sliding door off of a living room and you can see the lights and hear the water. It’s very relaxing. It’s like going to the ocean and having your room right by the ocean.” A visit to Creative Water Gardens is a destination in itself, as the large property has a number of working fountains and pond displays to let customers get a first-hand look at what they’re buying. “People come from all around. I hear it every day that it’s a hidden gem, a destination,” said Garnica. Garnica bought Creative Water Gardens two years ago with a vision to continue its reputation for quality ponds and fountains and to expand into a full nursery. “I want to make this the best place in Stanislaus and San Joaquin counties,” he said. The recent pandemic saw the store close for a couple of months, but it’s now back open and welcoming customers both in person and via phone orders. “We’ve been busier,” said Garnica about the pandemic. “We’re up 40 percent from last year… Funny how they wait until they stay home to clean up their yards. Don’t really think about maintaining their yards once they buy them.” No matter what plans a homeowner has for their yard, Garnica recommends talking to a professional before planting or starting a DIY project. “I’ve seen people buy plants and get frustrated when they die. Get educated. Go to a nursery. Professionals can steer you in the right direction. Education is important,” he said. ■

hen the coronavirus pandemic first forced the community into their homes over three months ago, one Turlock resident took it upon herself to help ensure the city’s restaurants would survive. Thanks to the creation of a Facebook page called Turlock To Go, foodies throughout town and surrounding communities have connected with each other while promoting local businesses. California and states throughout the country were first put under strict shelter-in-place orders in an attempt to curb the spread of COVID-19 back in mid-March — measures that also prohibited restaurants from serving customers inside of their establishments, instead requiring the businesses to only offer curbside pickup or delivery of meals. While some eateries closed altogether, many opted to completely modify their businesses into a “to go” operation, switching to smaller menus, offering family-sized meals, featuring daily specials and providing other creative 209MAGAZINE.COM

meal ideas, like take-and-make pizzas or cookie decorating packages. When she thought of the idea for a Facebook page, Turlock resident Kadi Ingram-Porter was having trouble keeping up with customer needs as a sales representative in the wine and spirits industry. Restaurants were no longer just trying to survive a week or two — they now had to find a way to make ends meet for as long as the shelter in place order lasted, which ended up being until the end of May. As for consumers, Ingram-Porter noticed people were tired of cooking and began posting their “to go” meals on social media. Soon enough, the Turlock To Go Facebook group was born. “With Facebook algorithms, it was difficult to see what posts were current and I kept thinking how nice it would be to have one place with all of the information. I decided to create Turlock To Go to be the place. I wanted it to be a place where restaurants could post their hours, menus and specials and a place where the community could go for all of this information,” Ingram-Porter said. “It is important to me that this page is for all to go services in Turlock (and nearby surrounding areas) and supports the community as a whole. It is my first priority that it is a positive page.” Since the Facebook group was created on March 24, it has amassed nearly 10,000 members

when we can’t really be together,” Ingram-Porter said. Thanks to the Turlock To Go group’s success, she’s also started pages for Modesto and Oakdale. She hopes that the pages can help business owners increase their takeout orders and stay afloat during the crisis, as well as learn from each other and cheer each other on. Michelle Peterson of Dust Bowl Brewing Company offered a heartfelt “thank you” to Ingram-Porter for creating the Facebook group. “What a wonderful reflection on our caring community!” Peterson said. “It’s a platform that’s not only informative, it’s bringing families and businesses together in a very personal, authentic way.” Since stay-athome orders were lifted and restaurants received the go-ahead to offer Turlock To Go dine-in services member Cirenia Valencia shares once more, the a photo of her Turlock To Go family having page is now called fun at home Turlock To Go and with a pizza kit from Rico’s Dine In. This allows Pizza in March. those whose dining rooms are now open to advertise that they are while still allowing businesses who are still hesitant to open the opportunity to promote their businesses as well. For IngramPorter, seeing the community come together to help local eateries no matter the circumstances has been inspiring. “I am so happy to hear that Turlock To Go has helped so many businesses during this difficult time. I have enjoyed watching the progression of this group,” she said. “It has been fun to watch more and more restaurants reopen for both to go and dine in, to see the creativity in the specials and meals that they have offered and it’s been very exciting to see brand new businesses open successfully during this time.” ■
— a majority of whom utilize the virtual space to post photos from restaurants that are open, share special deals with each other and discover new places to dine that they didn’t know of before. “My routine was the same until I was added to this group. I intended on cooking at home more, but have eaten out a little more often to support these small businesses,” Brianna Perez said in April. “I’ve learned of so many small businesses that I wouldn’t have otherwise heard of, so I try a few times to order to go from new places to support these businesses! I also love it because people post photos, which entices me to go try a new place.” For others, Turlock To Go offered a sense of escape while they were confined to their homes. “We feel it puts money back into the local businesses, but really it gives us a sense of normalcy. We look forward to getting in the car and making that drive around our town we love so much,” Sandra Avila said. “This group is a great source of info of restaurants we would have never known about. It really is the highlight of our week.” While there is currently no evidence of food being associated with COVID-19 transmission, according to the Center for Disease Control, there is always the possibility that the virus could be ingested through inadequate hand washing on the restaurant’s end. Restaurants have long been required to follow food safety rules, though, in addition to extra measures now put in place due to COVID-19. Those who choose to order from restaurants during the pandemic should follow CDC guidelines of maintaining spatial distance when picking up their food, whether curbside or at their front door. No matter how Turlockers choose to support their favorite eateries or grocery stores, for those who eat at home, there’s one thing they have in common, Ingram-Porter said — their love of food. “Food is one of the few things we have left during a time when we can no longer engage in so many of our usual activities. Food has always brought people together, even now, 209MAGAZINE.COM

Creating an effective small business marketing strategy By BETH DEVINE
I
t doesn’t matter whether your small business has been around for years or has expanded to multiple locations. What every entrepreneur and business owner must understand is that every small business needs a solid strategy in order to be successful. Statistics show that there are 30.7 million small businesses in the USA. However, we can also see that more than 50% of them fail in the first year — and more than 95% of small startups fail in the first five years. Do you have any idea why this is the case? It goes without saying that marketing is one of the crucial parts of any small business. Having a solid and effective small business marketing strategy can often be the difference between failure and success.
If you are in the process of starting a new business (or re-starting thanks to COVID), let’s go through some of the basic marketing principles you will need in order to set the stage for growth. Below, we are listing our guide with actionable ideas that you can use in your marketing strategy. What Is A Marketing Strategy – And How Can It Help You? According to Investopedia, a marketing strategy is the game plan that your business needs to have in order to attract prospective customers and turn them into loyal ones. Obviously, the marketing strategy is divided into many key components. These comprise the company’s value proposition, its key brand messaging, the data on the target consumer demographics and other high-level elements.
2. CONTENT MARKETING PLAN
1. A PROFESSIONALLOOKING WEBSITE
Once you launch your website, you need to start creating content. Now, this is usually one of the trickiest parts for marketing your small business. Owners either don’t have the time to create new content – or don’t know how to. The truth is, content is a primary component that can help you differentiate your business. You can add call-to-action posts for visitors to subscribe to your blog and build your email database. This way, you can start collecting leads and offer your potential customers a way to receive information (even if they are not ready to buy anything from you yet).
Having a website is not a nice to have — it’s a must have. It is the portal that works 24/7, can be accessed by anyone from anywhere, showing what you offer, where you are and how a potential customer can get in touch with you. A website takes you to a global marketplace. A website is more than just a digital doorway for new customers. Hence, it is one of the first things you need to set up prior to launching (or relaunching) your small business.
209MAGAZINE.COM

Ideally, a small business marketing strategy should help you narrow down your target audience, articulate the value you deliver and lay out your pricing strategy based on your analysis, budget and planning. If you have officially launched your small business, you need to know what the foundational next steps are in order to thrive — at least in the digital marketing world. — Beth Devine is one of the most sought-after and well-respected marketing experts in the Central Valley. 3. SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING In times when more than 90% of adults are online and nearly the same amount of them use social media, there is no excuse to not use social media marketing for your business. Being present on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and LinkedIn can help your business get found by your target audience. Since it has the “socialize and connect” attitude, social media is also a powerful business tool for increasing your traffic, improving your rankings and engaging with interested customers — ultimately leading to sales conversions.
4. UNDERSTANDING OF SEO If you are new to search engine optimization (SEO), you should know that it is another must-have for your small business marketing strategy. Basically, SEO is the process of generating big results from search engines – and making sure that you are following all the rules that can help you rank higher on Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engine providers. You can have a beautiful and functional website, but if you don’t have the components of SEO you’ll never be found online. Since it is a huge topic that cannot be summed up in a short article like this, we recommend reading more about SEO and finding guides on websites like MOZ, Search Engine Land and others.
5. CONVERSION TOOLS & ANALYTICS Last but not the least are conversion tools. They help with generating leads or customers from your website. It’s simple – whenever a potential customer lands on your website, you need to offer them a way to subscribe to more posts or even leave their email for your newsletter. This is what conversion tools are used for and how they can help you optimize your website and use it to drive leads.
ON A SIDE NOTE, connecting your website with Google Analytics can help you see how many people visited it in any specific period, how long they stayed and which pages they read. All of this lets you focus on revamping your small business marketing strategy and making sure you are targeting the right customers.

Happy cows. Fun Flavors.
Stanislaus County’s freshest bottle of milk. At Nutcher Milk Taste matters. We feed our cows a balance daily ration, that our nutritionist puts together. We pick ingredients that don’t change the flavor of the cow’s milk. When we milk our cows, their milk comes out about 98 degrees and we chill it to 38 degrees within 5 minutes of leaving the cow, saving flavor and preventing bacteria growth. This is above and beyond the Grade A standard. We pump the milk to the processing plant 20 feet away during milking. We then do antibiotic testing to ensure antibiotic free milk. We then pasteurize and homogenize, making it ready to go to the bottle. From cow to bottle in just a few hours and it is only milk from our cows.
209 Magazine 40-Aug-Sep 2020-NEW.indd 67
We offer Whole milk, 2%, Half and Half and Lactose free whole milk. Fun flavors for young and old. Chocolate, Strawberry, Cotton Candy, Root beer, Orange cream, Mocha, Cold brew Coffee, Banana, Eggnog, Pumpkin spice, and always trying new ones. 2020 has been a unique year all around. In May we ran a limited run of Horchata Flavor Milk. Then we celebrated our 5yr Anniversary in June with a Limited Edition Bottle and Birthday Cake Flavor Milk. Keep a lookout for other fun flavors in the future.
Why glass bottle? Our cows make great tasting milk, so we wanted a package that didn’t change the flavor. Glass bottles keep the milk colder, there is no taste changing residue from glass. We reuse the bottles over and over so no milk containers in the landfill. A $2.00 deposit exchange for every bottle. RETURN CLEAN BOTTLES TO ANY STORE THAT SELLS NUTCHER MILK FOR YOUR DEPOSIT BACK!!!!
We deliver directly to stores near you. Truly Farm to Fridge for you.

Strong Today. Strong To Stay. In 1916, a group of farmers and business owners gathered in Lodi, California to establish Farmers & Merchants Bank (F&M Bank). A lot has changed since then, but F&M Bank has remained true to its founding principles – to remain locally owned and operated, financially strong, invested in the community and dedicated to serving all citizens. When Our Communities Thrive, We All Thrive. Giving back to our community means giving back to the people we know and serve on a daily basis. F&M Bank employees have volunteered over 30,000 combined hours in community service and supported over 250 non-profit organizations. Not only that, but we have also donated over $2 million to local charities, invested over $60 million and provided more than $330 million community development loans. We are proud to have achieved and maintained the highest Community Reinvestment Rating possible by the Federal Government. Being recognized with an “Outstanding” rating is so extraordinary, it’s awarded to only 13% of all California banks1. Experience the Difference By bringing exceptional strength and service, we remain committed to doing business the “right way” owing to the fact that a successful, sustainable business must be grounded with trust. With innovation and forwardthinking, we have grown to 29 full-service locations, including branches in the Bay Area cities of Concord, Walnut Creek and Napa. By providing a truly unique experience that goes beyond customers’ expectations, we deliver creative solutions and simply take the burden of financial management off their shoulders.
