Found in Turlock Bridal Showcase coming to downtown BY KRISTINA HACKER Turlock Journal
When couples begin to plan for their wedding day, Turlock businesses hope they'll consider keeping it local. A new event is aimed at connecting local businesses with engaged couples: the first annual Found in Turlock Bridal Showcase, which is set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 19 on Center Street in downtown Turlock. st how "We want to show people just aid much Turlock has to offer," said Lynette Borges of Blown Awayy Salon and Spa. Borges and event promoter Trina Wally of Right Angle Functions are the driving force behind this new bridal fair, and they're hoping to make it an annual event. "This is a merchant-led effort to shop local," said Walley. The Bridal Showcase will feature 30 vendors, all exclusively Turlock businesses. A bridal fashion show and a fashion show that features wedding outfits for children and honeymoon attire, will lead up to a wedding dress live auction. Planning tips and tricks and live hair and makeup demonstrations throughout the event, as well as a "men's lounge" area sponsored by On Broadway with Two Guys. Beautiful Beginnings owner Carol Schellinck has been selling wedding and formal gowns and tuxedos in Turlock for over 30 years but lately she's seen a drop off in local shoppers. Schellinck said that most of her business nowadays are mothers who bought their wedding dresses from her

decades ago bringing in their daughters for their own wedding gowns. She's hoping this Bridal Showcase will draw more attention to the local shops available to brides and grooms. "I don't think they realize there's one in town," she said. Tickets for the Found in Turlock Bridal Showcase are $5 each and include entry into the door prize raffles. Alejandra Rafael Martin MARRIED — JANUARY 31, 2015 Photos by
Q A
How did you meet and become engaged?
Rafael and I met after he saw a picture of me on Instagram through his cousin. His words when he saw me were “me caso” Spanish for “I’ll marry her.” Rafa lived in Florida at the time due to work. We talked and Facetimed for two months before he flew cross country to finally meet me in person. Everyone told us we were crazy. After meeting though, we obviously clicked and our long-distance relationship began. Rafa is a pitcher for the Syracuse Chiefs, Triple-A baseball for the Washington Nationals. He was always on the road so it became difficult for us to see each other unless I flew out
to see him or waited for the offseason. We were dating for eight months before he proposed. It was Feb. 10, 2014 at Santa Monica Pier where he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I teared up, nodded yes because I was speechless with it all. In my eyes, it was perfect.
Q A
Where were you married?
Mass took place at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Modesto. I chose this church because it is my parish and it is where I attended mass on Sundays. It is the most beautiful church both inside and both in the area. I could not have had it anywhere else. The reception took place at the Larsa Banquet Hall in Turlock. After looking around and getting rates from various

venues, we chose the Larsa Hall because it was the best of our options. Along with the venue, we got the food and open bar for a reasonable price. It was also big enough to accommodate the 350 guests we were planning to have.
Q A
What was the overall theme of yourwedding/reception?
The overall theme for our wedding was elegant vintage with the use of navy blue, blush pink, and ivory colors. Raymund from Design by Fabric in Turlock made my visions become reality the day of. He asked me what I envisioned as my dream wedding and gave me just that. All I did was tell him exactly what I wanted and with the help of his team, made it all happen. Rafa and I were
amazed by the beauty of it all.
Q A
hat elements of your wedding/ W reception were especially meaningful to you?
Every element to our wedding expressed both our personalities and values. We had a traditional Catholic wedding so the Mass was very important to us. Rafa says the most exciting part was seeing me walk down the aisle. Saying our vows and having the blessing of God in our marriage was of most importance. Followed by the Mass came the celebration which was accompanied by a Mariachi and Banda for music which is a must being that we are both Mexican. The other most important element our wedding had to
BRIDAL GUIDE 2015
have been the beauty of seeing both our family and friends come together to share with us such an important day in our lives. We had all our family travel hours to make it out and to see that many people want to share and celebrate with us, was heartwarming. You could feel the love and joy from everyone.
Q A
hat advice would you like W to share with other couples planning their wedding?
First of all, make your guest list and approximate the number of guests you plan to have. Weddingwire. com will help a lot when it comes to building your list and having everyone RSVP. Next, based on that number you
can build your budget accordingly. You will want to stick closely to your budget when it comes to spending and undoubtedly that will probably be the hardest part. This is where you weigh our your wants and needs and figure out what you are willing to spend more on rather than not. For us, the most important was first booking the church and venue. After that the other most important elements were spending on photography and videography. It was one of the best decisions we made because both the photographer and videographer were amazing. We preferred to invest our money on having beautiful memories that come from photographs and our video because they will last a lifetime. Instead we cut down on small things like invitations and made
them ourselves. You have to be smart about where to spend or not. Also, there will be a lot of opinions throughout the wedding planning, some good ones and a lot of bad ones. At the end of the day though, remember it’s YOUR wedding and your day so choose what is going to make you happy. You will not regret that. You will be told time after time to just enjoy the moment because that day is going to fly by. Trust me, it does happen! No matter what goes wrong that day of, don’t stress it. You have to let go and let everyone else take care of it. Laugh, dance, drink, and don’t forget to taste your cake! It’s your day, so enjoy it. You only get married once!

MARRIED — AUGUST 16, 2014
Q A
How did you meet and become engaged?
We met during the summer of 2007 while serving as staff leaders at Mexico Caravan Ministries, serving with 16 other people in Tijuana. While there, we learned about serving others and how to sacrifice worldly comforts. Finding love was not a priority for us; we were there to learn and to grow our faith. While in Mexico we became friends who realized that we “liked” each other. This unique early experience helped grow our relationship in many ways. After Mexico Steven decided to move to San Diego and Mackenzie moved back to Turlock. After dating longdistance for a while, Mackenzie moved to San Diego. After finishing junior college, we both found ourselves moving north to Turlock. Once here, Mackenzie finished her Bachelor’s degree, while Steve completed a Master’s degree. After six years of dating, Steven decided that it was time to tie the knot. On Oct. 30, 2013, the Red Sox won the World Series. Being a die-hard Boston fan, Steven was caught up in the moment. He decided that this was a good night to propose, even though we had just finished a dinner from Taco Bell. This moment was not especially romantic
or beautiful. However, what was really important to us both was all of the moments that had led up to this, from our hardest struggles to our greatest shared triumphs. This day will be one that we never forget.
Q A
Where were you married?
Q A
What was the overall theme of your wedding/ reception?
We decided to have our wedding at the First Presbyterian Church in Turlock. Mackenzie’s grandfather was the architect who designed the sanctuary. The reception was held outside of the church, where Mackenzie’s father made partitions to create a private and intimate setting.
We decided to have our theme represent us — coast to coast. Our theme started when Mackenzie walked down the aisle to the Led Zeppelin song “Going to California.” We also had a sand ceremony, during which we poured sand from the east coast and sand from the west coast into one jar, in order to symbolize the two of us coming together. When we walked back up the aisle as
husband and wife we walked to the Dropkick Murphys’ song “Shipping up to Boston.” The color scheme was based on violet and green, but it wasn’t just two colors. Mackenzie really likes all kinds of flowers, so there were variations of orange, yellow, green and violet. We really wanted to have lots of colors to represent the outdoors, in memory of grandparents who are no longer with us. To represent the coast to coast theme on the tables, we cut up maps of the different places that we have lived or gone together and glued them to tea light holders. Folded into the napkins were papers with a game that we used to play down in Mexico and a menu that Mackenzie had printed on pages of an Ernest Hemingway short story. Mackenzie also created a stamp that said “share the love coast to coast,” which we stamped onto burlap bags of coffee to give out as favors. We had tacos for dinner to represent where we met. We had Dunkin Donuts iced coffee to represent Steve’s pride in his hometown coffee. For dessert we had donuts, and a cake for the bride and groom that was shaped like a donut. This represented a tradition in Mackenzie’s family in which her father would buy everyone donuts on their birthdays. We also enjoy playing games and being outside, so we set up fields for our guests to play badminton, bocce and corn hole.

Q A
What elements of your wedding/reception were especially meaningful to you?
Q A
What advice would you like to share with other couples planning their wedding?
Our wedding was very personalized, which meant a lot to us. We made all of the decorations, invitations, wedding favors and save the dates, which gave us a lot of pride. It also meant a lot to us to have people from all over attending our wedding; we had guests travel from California, Massachusetts, Texas, Washington and New Hampshire. We were also very excited to have our families be involved. Instead of a traditional groom and bridal party, we had our siblings stand on stage with us. These details made our wedding feel especially personal and romantic.
Finish as much as you can early on. The closer you get to your wedding day, the more small details will need to be taken care of. It helps to have a list of what you want and be consistent. On your wedding day, be flexible; unexpected things will happen, and it is best to just accept them. In the end, it is the relationship that matters. Your wedding is just one day, and you should enjoy it fully.

Maci Nick
DATE OF WEDDING: OCTOBER 3, 2015
Q A
How did you meet and become engaged?
Nick and I both went to Pitman High School, but we never knew each other (even though I was a cheerleader and he was a football player)! We later connected through mutual friends on Facebook in September of 2011. Once we started talking we realized how much we had in common. We met in person a week after talking on social media and text messaging, and we have been together ever since! Nick and I had been talking about our future plans to get married for awhile, and on Dec. 21, 2014, Nick proposed on Christmas Tree Lane in Turlock. He asked all of our closest friends and family to attend the proposal. I was ecstatic to see everyone surrounding Nick as he dropped to one knee next to a homemade sign that said “Marry Me?” in Christmas lights.
Q A
Where do you plan to wed?
Our wedding and reception will be held at my grandparents’ home in Coarsegold, California. We chose this location because they have a beautiful property that lends itself to incredible lighting, weather and landscaping. They are graciously letting us use their home
for the wedding, which is saving us a great amount of money on the venue expense. It also allows us to fully customize everything without any rules or requirements.
Q A
What will be the overall theme of the wedding/reception?
Q A
What elements of the wedding/ reception are especially meaningful?
The overall theme of the wedding is vintage. Originally, I had envisioned more of a Bohemian theme, but as we began planning, I fell in love with everything old and vintage. I am hoping to have everything be as unique and original as I can find.
One of the most meaningful parts of the reception is the dishes we will be using. Each plate set is going to be different and mix-matched. We have been thrifting to find as much vintage and floral print china as we can, but the bulk of the dishes will be made up of my relatives’ china sets that they have held onto for years. It means a lot that so many people I care about will be contributing something that has been in their lives for so long. One of the most meaningful parts of the ceremony is that Nick and I will be writing
our own vows. We are so excited to have intimate and personal vows that are unique to us rather than traditional vows that are commonly used.
Q
What advice would you like to share with other couples planning their wedding?
A
If I could give some advice to newly engaged couples planning their wedding, it would be to get organized as soon as possible. Also, download the app from The Knot. It has a ton of information to get you started, and it has kept me sane so far throughout the planning process
with their customizable timelines and checklists. Don’t forget that your wedding should be a reflection of you, your fiancé and everything you love.

Amber Chuck
Photos by Nic Castellanos
DATE OF WEDDING: JUNE 11, 2015
Q A
How did you meet and become engaged?
They first laid eyes on each other at The Boardroom in Modesto. Chuck was working the door as security and Amber was a patron. The first time they met, she attempted to strike up a conversation only to be brushed aside. A few months later, she tried again, this time successfully getting his attention and their relationship started blossoming. For their first date, he met her in the hills where he grew up, took her stargazing and they never looked back. On the day they became engaged, nothing seemed to go according to plan. They were headed out to Monterrey to meet some friends and visit the aquarium. Everything that could go wrong seemed to go wrong from leaving late to terrible parking. Finally, after a short walk through the aquarium and a long drive to the beach, they ended up down by the water surrounded by friends
where things continued to go in the wrong direction with the waves washing away the words Chuck had written in the sand for Amber. Frustrated and slightly disgruntled, he got down on one knee and proposed. She said yes and they walked around the corner to see that one of their close friends had rewritten the words “Marry Me?” in the sand to replace the words that had been washed away. After that, all of the wedding details started to fall into place.
Q A
They really wanted their wedding and reception to reflect the people they are. They picked elements that they thought represented different facets of our lives and relationships. They’re both from country roots so there’s a bit of that interwoven in the midst of everything from the centerpieces to the wedding favors.
Q
Q A
Q
A
Where do you plan to wed?
The wedding and reception are being held at New Life Christian Center in Turlock. The ceremony will be held in the sanctuary and our reception in the outdoor area. Amber has been attending New Life since she was in elementary school and Chuck began attending soon after they started dating and it was important to them to be married in their home church.
15
What will be the overall theme of the wedding/reception?
What elements of the wedding/ reception are especially meaningful?
A
The music is a very important element for us. Amber’s late grandfather played the organ and piano for 67 years and she had always hoped that he would play for her wedding. Unfortunately, he passed away a few years ago so her uncle will be playing the music for the ceremony. Another important
element was the decision to have a dessert reception catered by Cold Stone Creamery because ice cream is Chuck’s favorite dessert. What advice would you like to share with other couples planning their wedding? Remember that this day is about both of you as a couple, it should be a reflection of you and your relationship. Don’t let family or friends guilt or talk you into something if you don’t really want it. Don’t be afraid to ask for help, from friends or family and from each other. You should be working on this event together as a team, not just one of you independently. People always say it’s all about the bride, but it’s not, it’s about the couple.

A photo booth can add that "it" factor to any wedding or bridal shower. Not only does it serve the purpose of collecting life lasting memories via photos, it also provides guests with favors and the bride and groom with a guest book of faces and written sentiments to view for the rest of their lives. The Photo Lounge photo booth originated in 2011, when local photographer Candy Padilla wanted to expand the services she offered her clientele. "As much as I enjoy the photography side alone, photo booths were becoming the up and coming thing to have at any special event so I thought it would be smart and fun to add to my business" said Padilla. Padilla said she first learned of photo booths at events when friends of hers in Los Angeles got married and had one. "I think it was about 2007, I thought it was a really unique service to provided and my friends urged me to build one. It took a few years but I am glad I did it. It is really awesome to be a part of memory making for others," she said. The general package for The Photo Lounge photo booth consists of three hours of unlimited use. Services usually include double prints (one for guests, one for the guest book), a customized guest book where guests can sign a memo to the bride and groom next to their photo, a choice of color or black and white prints each session, a custom logo on the prints, props, one to two attendants to assist guests, a CD with all photo booth session photos in high resolution for the bride and groom to keep and the booth is color coordinated and customized to "blend" into the event set up and decor. and a bigger refrigerator and he told me that I could do everything here,” said Oliva. “He basically opened up his restaurant to me.” Oliva also utilizes the space to meet with couples to discuss wedding details before their big day. During this time, Oliva gives each couple an opportunity to select three flavors they might be interested in so that they can do a tasting. “Planning a wedding it is a stressful event, so I make sure the customer gets exactly what they want by paying extreme attention to all of the details and trying to help them as best as I can,” said Oliva. “I am very particular so they are getting something as If it was my own wedding basically.” “I do that for every couple,” continued Oliva. According to Oliva, this year’s most pop-
ular cupcake for weddings is her cheesecake with strawberry cream cheese frosting, a selection which took the top spot from last year’s favorite, the chocolate cupcake with peanut butter frosting. “Each cupcake is lovingly handmade from scratch using wholesome ingredients and a sprinkle of love,” said Oliva. “To me, cupcakes are an expression of love—from preparation to presentation, from first bite to lasting memory.” Customers are able to order two-dozen mini cupcakes of the same flavor for $25 and one dozen standard size cupcakes of the same flavor for $28. Gluten free, vegan, specialty, and enhanced cupcakes are slightly more expensive, depending on what exactly the customer wants. To order cupcakes from Cupcakes By Jo, call 535-6219 or email CupcakesByJo@ yahoo.com. Oliva also encourages potential customers to reach out to her on Instagram and Yelp. hat’s one thing a bride doesn’t want on her wedding day? Stress. Yonan’s Floral and Boutique is committed to alleviating the concerns complicit with “the big day” by offering practically every wedding service necessary at their one location. Yonan’s Floral and Boutique not only does floral bouquets and centerpieces, the local store also offers décor, lighting, linen rentals, dish ware and event coordination services. “I think what sets us apart is we have everything you would need for a wedding,
A to Z,” said Managing Partner Ailin Yadegarian. “It’s easier when one company can do it all instead of four different vendors for example. It’s less stress for the brides and it makes the whole process much simpler.” With roughly a decade in the bridal business, Yonan’s is well versed in coordinating and putting on weddings of all cultures including Indian, Assyrian, and Portuguese weddings which tend to be larger than other affairs said Yadegarian. Yonan’s is presently gearing up for peak wedding season, which takes place between May and August , and requires the store’s team to coordinate four to five weddings a weekend. With seven florists, two set-up managers, and 14 employees that make it happen for brides across the region, Yonan’s is comfortable playing a role in what some brides will call the biggest day of their life. “It takes a lot but it’s not a job to me, it’s a passion,” said Yadegarian.
