Hard work paid off for Ceres High duo • Arcelia Hermosillo is Ceres High’s valedictorian, Alick Liang is salutatorian By J EFF BEN ZI GER

Editor of the
Ceres (Calif.) Courier
OCUS, DETERMINATION AND SACRIFICE were all the main ingredients of the lifestyle that caused Arcelia Hermosillo to rise to the top of the Ceres High School class of 2014 and which earned Alick Liang the role of class salutatorian. Arcelia, who earned a grade point of average of 4.357, will deliver the valedictorian speech at Friday’s commencement exercise at CHS. Alick ends the school year with a GPA of 4.279 and his speech will be a part of commencement exercises. It’s almost deja vu for the pair as both were also the top students in their eighth grade class at Mae Hensley four years ago. When aunt Maria Ruiz became the 2009 class valedictorian, Arcelia was determined to get the same prize for her class. “I wanted to do that,” said Hermosillo. “I like challenges and setting a high goal for me to reach.” Arcelia hopes to use her speech on Friday as a way of recapturing the magic of the high school experience while inspiring fellow graduates to launch successfully into the future. Off to U.C. Berkeley, Hermosillo is a physics major who is also contemplating the study of astrophysics. “But I might go into public health,” she added. Her interest in public health was prompted by an involvement with the campus club PHAST, short for Protecting Health And Slamming Tobacco. “With physics I love science and math but I feel like with public health I could reach out to people more and kind of be more involved with community issues,” she said. Arcelia was raised by her mother, Bertha Ruiz, who brought her to Ceres from native Mexico when she was only three years old. Her stepfather, Javier Mercado,

Hard work earned Arcelia Hermosillo the title of 2014 Ceres High School class valedictorian while friend Alick Liang claimed the second slot as salutatorian.
a CHS soccer coach, later entered her life. As she went through Caswell and Carroll Fowler elementary schools, Mae Hensley Junior High and then CHS, the parental support was helpful. “They’ve both just been really supportive,” said Arcelia. “My Mom tells me every day, like lately now that graduation is coming up, she’s like ‘I’m proud of you, mija!’ And I’m like, ‘thank you, Mom.’ ” While her mother provided a lot of motivation, Arcelia developed her own internal drive to do the best, whether in the classroom, playing on the Bulldogs’ girls’ soccer team, or giving her all as a member of SHH (Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica), CSF (California Scholastic Federation) and
the Leadership class. Classmates may see her and Alick as “geniuses” who had an easy time in academics but she said “we just did everything we had to to be here but everybody has the capacity; you just have to want it, that’s the thing.” Also driven to succeed in studies was Alick Liang, who also exhibited competitiveness on the tennis court. He stated that not only did he have school-issued homework but his parents dispensed their own homework from grammar and math textbooks discarded from school districts that employ both parents. Alick’s parents, Ben Liang and Mary Yu, immigrated to the U.S. from China in the 1980s and instilled
the value of hard work. “When I was in third grade (Dad) was making me study off the fifth grade math book so improvement jumped up on my math scores,” he said. Alick attended Virginia Parks Elementary School and Mae Hensley Junior High before arriving at Ceres High in 2010. Despite being good friends during junior and senior high school, Hermosillo and Liang maintained a good-natured sense of competitive in the quest to take the honored positions of the class of 2014. “Every little math test we had, I was always competing to see who was getting higher,” admitted Liang in his rivalry with SEE VAL & SAL, PAGE 14

Rodriguez-Arias at top at CVHS
2014 Grad Salute
• 16 seniors are above 4.0 GPA to be co-salutatorians Miguel Angel Rodriguez-Arias is valedictorian of Central Valley High School. Also at the top of the class of 2014 are co-salutatorians Carlos Alfonso, Giovanni Barajas, Anthony Bonales, Marlen Diaz, Francisco Gradilla, Talwinder Kaur, Surivan Khamvongsod, Mohak Kumar, Juan Medrano Fregoso, Carina Partida, Braden Rambo, Ravjot Sahota, Daravuth Sek, Tranjit Singh, Esteban Villafan and Daniela Zepeda. Miguel Angel Rodriguez-Arias was born in Stanford and raised in the bay area before migrating to Modesto. He is the youngest of five siblings
reared by a single mother. Being the first generation child of his family to be born in the United States, Miguel faced the obstacle of having to grow up in an environment different than that of his parents, who are both from Mexico. At a young age, Miguel began to learn the English language as a second language to his native Spanish tongue. Since Miguel’s childhood, his parents always stressed the importance of education, as they first-hand experienced the difficulty of working rigorously from quitting school at a young age. Although Miguel is not the first of his family to graduate from high
school, he is the first to fully enroll in a four-year university. Miguel’s older siblings always encouraged him to pursue higher education and aim high. As a child, Miguel always dreamed of attending his dream school: Stanford University. Currently a high school senior at Central Valley High School, Miguel will be the first student from Central Valley to attend Stanford University; all expenses are paid for. At Stanford, Miguel plans to study environmental engineering and computer science. In five years, Miguel plans to work on his master’s degree for Environmental Engineering.
Miguel A. Rodriguez-Arias, CVHS valedictorian.
MEET THE SALUTATORIANS OF CENTRAL VALLEY HIGH Anthony Bonales Carlos Alfonso Giovanni Barajas
Carlos Alfonso was born in Oakland and lived in San Leandro for seven years until he moved to Ceres at the age of 8. Coming from a diverse community he was aware of the differences that the Valley had brought into his daily life. Some challenges for Carlos were to adjust to his new environment such as meeting new friends and learning to cope with not seeing his family left behind in the Bay Area. However, with the resiliency Carlos Alfonso that his parents had instilled in him, he became accustomed to his new home. Both of Carlos’ parents had come from Central America; his mother from Guatemala and his father from El Salvador. Both faced difficulties growing up in a Third World country but continued to strive for education. “Seeing the passion within both my parents has always given me inspiration to pursue my goals, if they can do it there is no excuse why I shouldn’t be able to as well,” said Carlos. Being the oldest of his siblings – other than an older brother living in Central America – he was always set as the lead example for his younger siblings since he will be the first to attend a University. Carlos Alfonso will be attending the University of California Davis this fall as a Biochemistry and molecular biology major. Being a native from the Bay Area, Carlos doesn’t see the transition to Davis as “a huge change. It is still difficult leaving my family, especially my younger brother Ryan, but if it means a step closer to a brighter future, it is a step I am willing to take.” Carlos sees himself in 10 years with a PhD in his declared major and preparing to attend medical school to become a doctor, either as an optometrist or a non-invasive cardiologist.
Giovanni Barajas was born in Gilroy and moved around from city to city, until the age of 7 when his family finally settling in Ceres. As an only child of two immigrant parents from Mexico, Giovanni will be the first in his family to graduate from high school and attend college. Although, education was his top priority in school he still found the time to partake in extracurricular activities at Central Valley High School. He participated in the National Honor Society, HYLC, California Scholarship Federation, and Interact. He was also part of the basketball, tennis, cross country, track and field, and swimming teams through his four years of high school. Giovanni will most likely be attending the University of California, Berkeley, next fall. Moving to the Bay Area, someplace new to him, will not Giovanni Barajas be easy but Giovanni is open to new experiences. He wants to step out of his “comfort zone” and will fully embrace the challenge. His career goal is to become a pharmacist. He plans to achieve this by first majoring in chemistry and then applying to several pharmacy schools including UCSF, USC, UOP, UCSD and perhaps the University of Arizona. Giovanni sees himself in debt within 10 years but will not stress about it because it will all be worth the struggle since he then envisions himself helping the community and promoting awareness about good health.
Anthony Bonales was born in Modesto and has lived his entire life in Ceres. Growing up as an older brother with three other siblings, Anthony at a young age learned what it meant to be a role model for his younger siblings. However with the limitations of being deaf in one ear and also suffering a speech deficiency, he had many complications to face. He adapted to these obstacles. Coming from a family where doing your best wasn’t an option, but a given, Anthony was set along a path to accomplish anything he desired. With two parents who pushed the significance of pursuing a college degree, they instilled the basics of perseverance and determination in their son. Little did they know that 15 years later Anthony would receive a 4.6 GPA and also be widely involved on and off his high school campus. Anthony was involved in numerous clubs including the National Honors Society, Hispanic Youth Leadership Council, All Student Body Leadership, and many more. Anthony also plays an active role in the First Tee of Central Valley where he spent hours upon hours teaching young children life skills and the game of golf. Anthony plans on attending University of California, Riverside, where he will study business and play on their Division I golf team. He hopes to use the same motivation that has allowed him to excel in high school to achieve his dream of becoming an entrepreneur and also lead his team to collegiate golf Divisional Title. Ten years down the road you can expect Anthony to be either the leading money winner on the PGA Tour or a prosperous business owner. Anthony Bonales

Marlen Diaz
Wednesday, June 4, 2014
Marlen Diaz was born in Modesto and has been raised in Ceres her entire life. Her father was born in Ceres, and served in the Marine Corps upon graduating from Ceres High School. Her mother moved from Mexico to California in search of new hope, in the 1990’s. Marlen has always had the support of her parents to excel at her passions, and set her education as a top priority. Since Marlen was a little girl, she has always had big goals and aspirations; she states that even when she was in Kindergarten she knew she would be attending college. Now, Marlen will be the first of her family to attend college and she is very excited. Marlen hopes that this next journey of hers will help inspire her two younger sisters to also pursue a higher education. Marlen will be attending the University of California, Berkeley, this fall as a psychology major. She is excited to be attending Berkeley and knows that no matter what her transition is like she will make the best of it. When asked where she sees herself in five years she states, “I hope to see my life full of new experiences, on the road to becoming a strong woman; giving back to my community and those who have helped me get to where I am at this moment.” Marlen cannot wait to take this next step, and see what awaits her in Berkeley. Marlen Diaz
Patrick Khamvongsod
Francisco Gradilla
Francisco Gradilla was born in Redwood City. When he was six he moved to the Valley to begin his education. He grew up not knowing the importance of education, but the importance of survival and hard work by his father who has commuted thousands of hours a year to the Bay Area and back on weekends for more than 20 years. His mother and father both met Francisco Gradilla in the same town off the southern coast of Mexico in the 1980’s and began their new lives in Chicago, Illinois before moving to California for better job opportunities. Francisco has always had the support of his mother, younger brother, sister, and half-brothers and sisters to always do what he does best, being a good student and citizen. Francisco is the first to graduate from high school out of his family and is also a first-generation collegebound student. He has received most of his inspiration to pursue a college education from his oldest sister who attended Stanford University. He states “I never in my life expected college to be a part of my path. Work was always the notion and my mind had been set to become a mechanical tech like my brother and work with cars, but my friends and their goals changed my mind as well.” Francisco has always dreamed of working with cars and one day traveling to Japan to explore the car scene and popular culture of vehicles as an enthusiast. He loves the way in which cars work and function and is always eager to learn more about them. Francisco will be attending UC Davis and he will major in Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis on the automotive industry. Francisco sees himself working as an engineer innovating and enhancing the technology used in formula drift D1 vehicles domestically and abroad.
Patrick Khamvongsod
Patrick Khamvongsod, however complicated his name may sound, is a simple teenager. Born and raised in Modesto, he hasn’t ventured too far from the tree. Patrick’s parents, however, fulfilled that aspect of faraway journeys for him and can tell Patrick what the experience is like, as they migrated from Laos to California in the 1980’s. Being the eldest of three siblings, Patrick bears the burden of setting the standard for his younger brother and sister. Being the first of his family to continue his education after high school towards a four year university, he works diligently to make sure that he sets the standards high. But he doesn’t mind, saying, “I like the challenge of being the first in everything in
my family. I may have it the hardest but following a tough act is a challenge my siblings must face in their time.” Next fall Patrick will be pursuing a major in biochemistry and molecular biology at the University of California, Davis. He also plans to minor in music alongside this major. When asked about the odd combinations of interests, he states, “It may seem black and white when you compare the subjects, but they come together in a shade of gray. I have interests in both subjects and want to make myself as wellrounded as possible!” Although the idea of college is groundbreaking for Patrick, he believes U.C. Davis will be his “home away from home.”
Talwinder Kaur
5
Talwinder Kaur was born and raised in a traditional household in India. She moved from India in 2008 and settled in Ceres. Most of her mom’s family has settled in Ceres as well. She has a younger brother and an older sister who are always there for her. She generally tries to keep herself busy by doing extra-curricular activities for the community and by spending time with family. She has always been very family oriented in light of the fact that she knows her relatives are the individuals who will always be there to support her as she strives for success. As the middle child of her family, she is the second to graduate from Central Valley following her sister in 2010. She is the first in her family to graduate with honors and a 4.0 GPA all four years, which she hopes will inspire her younger brother to do the same. She will be attending CSU Stanislaus next fall where she will major in business accounting. CSU Stan State seems to be the perfect fit for her, located only about 15 minutes away from home, and offers great educational experiences. Talwinder has always been very dedicated and hardworking when trying to achieve her goals. She does not let any obstacles get in her way; she always perseveres and keeps working towards her dreams. She hopes to become a certified public accountant. Her future is bright as long as she keeps her strong faith and remembers what is truly important in life. She does not give up easily; she finds the positives in every situation and works around the obstacles to achieve Talwinder Kaur her goals.

Juan Medrano Fregoso
Juan Medrano was born in Hayward and has lived in Ceres since the age of five. Coming from parents who settled in the United States after being raised in Mexico, Juan is aware that his mom and dad didn’t have the opportunities he is presented with. His parents’ perseverance and support give Juan an inspiration to pursue all his goals, whether school or soccer. He states, “Without my parents, I would be nowhere near to where I’m at today.” Being the older of two siblings, Juan is the first to graduate from high school and the first to attend a four-year university. Although all this is new to his family, Juan and his family are excited to take on this new journey. Juan has also set an example for his little sister Angelica to follow. He states, “Seeing my sister grow has made me realize how huge of an influence I have on her. I just hope she can follow my footsteps of attending a university.” Juan will be attending U.C. Berkeley this upcoming fall as an undeclared/pre-business major. Berkeley seemed like the best option for him as he likes the prestigious value it carries and the location of the school. He hopes to grow and develop as an individual and says he can see himself “as a Cal graduate who is successful in a career that makes me happy.”
Juan Medrano Fregoso
Carina Partida
Carina Partida was born in Salinas in the heart of agriculture. Her family came to the United States in the 1990s in search of a better life. When she was five, Carina moved to Empire and then six years later, she moved to Ceres where she attended Blaker-Kinser. “At first I was angry I had to move since I had to leave all my friends behind but now I am grateful that Carina Partida I moved to Ceres because the experiences and people I have met here have really shaped me as a person,” said Carina. The middle child and the only girl in her family (an older and younger brother), Carina will be the first to go to college and graduate with a 4.0 GPA. College has always been a goal in Carina’s life. “Growing up my parents never had to tell me that I was going to college, because I told them. I don’t come from a wealthy family so, growing up; I observed the struggle of surviving in a world where money rules above all. I realized at an early age that to get where you want in life you need to have something valuable to offer to society, and that the first step was getting an education.” Carina will be attending U.C. Merced in the fall as a biological sciences major. She plans on getting her bachelor’s degree and then earn her doctorate. She dreams of one day becoming a well-established pediatrician so that she may be eligible to work for the World Health Organization and help children in poor countries.

In June, Ravjot will be the first child of his family to graduate from Central Valley High School and will have done so with a 4.0 GPA. Ravjot is also the first family member from his family to attend a four-year university. Ravjot will be attending the U.C. Davis this upcoming fall and will major in biological sciences. In the upcoming years Braden sees him earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing and working in his field of study. Braden was an extremely active singer he participated in the choir at his school for all four years and enjoyed it very much. The choir built up his character and shaped him into a better person. Music spoke to his heart and although he will not necessarily pursue a career with it, he will continue his singing. Braden is the first in his family to attend a four-year university and is the second oldest of three children. He grew up in a single parent home but this did not affect his ability to achieve greatness. Braden will be entering the rigor of college with an open mind and active thought. He wishes to fulfill his goals of supporting a family through his job therefore success in college is necessary for the pursuit of Braden Ram bo his dream.
Daravuth Jordan Sek was born and raised in Modesto where both of his parents’ families resided after leaving Cambodia. He has attended school there until he moved to Ceres in 2008 to continue his education. Throughout his life, he has been supported by his family and friends to work hard and thrive towards success. Since his parents didn’t have the opportunities he has today, they play vital roles of motivation for him. Although they divorced in his elementary years, his parents both continue to support him. Jordan is also the older of two boys, so he wants to set an example for his younger brother by graduating high school and becoming the first person in his family to attend a 4-year university. He will relocate to Davis and attend UC Davis next year to either major in biochemistry or engineering. In five years, Sek sees himself graduating college and creating something to utilize renewable energy to better the environment. Daravuth Jordan

Daniela Zepeda was born and raised in the Valley, the daughter of immigrants from Mexico. Growing up, Daniela was inspired by her family’s college experiences. Her father graduated from Cal Poly and her mother from Heald College. She is very thankful to have such supportive parents. Her mom, graduated from college at the age of 47, her mother has showed her that it is never too late to follow her dreams. Since a young age, Daniela took her education very seriously. At Central Valley High School, she was involved in the Impulse Dance Team, National Honors Society, AP Spanish Club, California Scholarship Federation, Link Crew Ambassador, and the Hispanic Youth Leadership Council. She is the youngest of three children and the third to go to college. Daniela will be attending the U.C. Davis this fall as a communication major. She feels that there are still so many things to explore and she can’t wait for college to see what she can do with her major. No matter what she decides to do, she is certain that she will have a positive impact on the lives of others. U.C. Davis is the perfect fit for Daniela because it’s not so far away from home and it’s both a wonderful and beautiful institution offering a wide range of academics. “I’m very fortunate to have been accepted into U.C. Esteban Villafan was born in Modesto but has lived in Ceres for most of his life. As a child he enjoyed many of the little things life has to offer but in elementary school he never quite met the bar other kids set. In class Esteban never enjoyed the academic and scholastic environment. However, once he entered junior high things changed. He finally set goals Esteban Villafan for himself and realized that if he focused and was determined, nothing could deter him from his goals—which he sought out and achieved. The honors and recognitions Esteban had been looking forward to receiving were great achievements once he obtained them, since his parents didn’t receive any when they were in high school. Because of his work ethic and determination, Esteban believes he has set a good example for those around him. He believes that anyone can succeed if they have the determination and if they put in the effort. Esteban will be attending MJC this fall because he wants to specialize in becoming an engine technician. In doing so, he can achieve his goal quicker than attending a university. He sees himself — happy, excited, and ready to work — in his new profession in five years.

Arcelia. “If we were competitive it was mostly joking around kind of competition,” she added. “Yeah, we didn’t hate each other,” joked Alick, who was a part of PHAST, CSF, and participated in Science Bowl, tennis and leadership. Liang said his address will also recount the good and bad memories of CHS but will admonish classmates to “be proud of every moment because every moment just creates who you are today.” Liang will further his studies at UCLA – his choice after seriously considering UC Berkeley – where he is entering as undeclared in life sciences. Because brother Wilson Liang (2010 CHS salutatorian) is studying biochemistry, Alick may pursue that field of study as well. While studying hard to come out on top meant sacrifices of time were made, both state that they knew how to have fun too. “Probably the most rigorous was junior year because we had AP U.S. History and AP English and personally I think those are the two hardest AP classes on campus and the most time consuming but when we really had free time we would still go out and have fun,” said Liang. Hermosillo agreed with junior year being the “hectic” with the AP classes and her participation in cross country and as stat keeper for the boys’ soccer team. “I didn’t sleep a lot but I got everything done,” she said. “Of course academics are important but if you’re stressing about a class, it’s like, don’t worry about it, go take a nap or something, go out with friends … because a year from now is that class going to matter?” Her advice for future valedictorian wannabes is to learn how to manage time. Ben Middleton was heralded by both top students as their favorite teacher. Both say Middleton’s AP English language class was very tough but was lightened by his humor and unique teaching style. The writing assignments allowed them to become introspective. “Not only did he teach you English and everything, but he also taught you a little bit about life as well,” said Liang. “And about ourselves” added Hermosillo. Arcelia complimented psychology teacher Laurie Frazier as “very fun” and who frequently “blows the minds” of students with her insights to human nature. High school is over for the class of 2014, but the next challenge will be college and the sadness of missing family relationships at home in order to do move on. “I feel like I’m ready,” said Arcelia. “You kind of have to be ready.” “Right now I just want to go out by myself,” said Liang, “but probably when I get there I’ll get homesick a little bit.”
