ETERMINATION. Gabriela “Gabby” Blandino chocks up her success – including being named the Ceres High School 2015 class valedictorian – to just

that. “I’m very determined,” she said. “Always have been, always will be. I like to put heart and soul into everything I do.” Ceres High’s top student believes she gets that trait from her parents. Her father, Mario Blandino, a computer science engineer, and her mother, Elisa Blandino, a Modesto Junior College test proctor, modeled for her a hard work ethic, she said. This semester Gabby has earned a 4.8 grade point average (GPA) and an overall high school GPA of 4.357. That GPA helped earn her a U.C. Berkeley chancellor’s and regent’s scholar worth $14,000 in tuition this coming school year. Her original plan was attending U.C. San Diego even though she applied to all UCs, the state universities and Stanford University. “Stanford was looking for something else. I don’t know what to say about them.” Gabby and Juan “Manny” Jimenez, 17, who earned the class’ salutatorian honor with a GPA of 4.279, have been friends since attending Virginia Parks Elementary School together. In fact, Gabby says talking in class to Manny got her into her first elementary school trouble. Their friendship is strong and they say there was no competition to edge the other out to the top of the class. “We knew we were both high-achieving students,” said Gabby. “We were never like, ‘Oh, I’m going to be number one,’ and ‘no, I’m going to be number one.’ It was never like that.” After graduation on Friday evening, Manny will be setting his sights on Cali-

fornia Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, to study computer science. He’s been working for his father, Juan Jimenez, who has a computer business so Manny would like to be a computer software engineer. Manny also spent time working for Don Juan Foods on Crows Landing Road. He’s worked hard to serve as a role model for two younger brothers. “I want them to see that it’s possible because I know school gets hard at times so it’ll be better for them to see like, ‘Oh if he could do it, so can I’ and have someone to go to, especially since my parents speak mainly Spanish so it’s hard to communicate course work to them.” The motivation to do his best school

was also rooted in the fact that better grades tend to lead to better paying jobs for graduates. Blandino has her sights on majoring in molecular and cell biology “hopefully to become a doctor eventually.” “It’s a long path; I’m not exactly looking forward to all of it but I’m ready.” Gabby would like to be a surgeon – but realizes it requires a lot more residency – but she would also like to be an obstetrician and deliver babies. Blandino was born in Modesto 18 years ago. Her mother liked Virginia Parks Elementary School where Gabby’s cousins attended and so she placed Gabby and older brother there. From there she went to

Mae Hensley Junior High and Ceres High. Her favorite classes at CHS were Advanced Placement (AP) Biology and AP English Language — “as hard as it was” – and AP History. She also enjoyed learning in AP Psychology. “All the hardest ones from last year became my favorites by the end of the year because they did push you and you learn for much. They’ve almost kind of inspired me to pick minors maybe and even like double majors in college. I really like history and obviously like biology.” Manny also liked the same AP classes. The pair shared in their love for the same teachers – Laurie Maldonado, SEE VAL & SAL, PAGE 14

Central Valley High School Helen Lee at top at CVHS • Nine CVHS seniors earned GPAs Helen Lee is the 2015 class valedictorian of Central Valley High School. Also at the top of the class of 2015 are co-salutatorians Ashley Del Valle, Simaran Dosanjh, Dania Gudino, Navjot Kanda, Victoria Navarro, Daisy Ochoa, Janelle Oliveros, Princess Pe and Sorrayar Sounthala. Helen Lee will be attending UC Berkeley in the fall and plans to major in the field of chemistry. She is extremely

excited to be relocating to the Bay area and states that “being independent will be difficult, but the degree of freedom that accompanies it will compensate for the difficulty.” As of now, Lee does not have a definitive career path she wants to pursue, but she does know that she wants to attend graduate school after she receives her bachelor’s degree.

above 4.0 to be class co-salutatorians Ashley Del Valle

Ashley Del Valle was raised by hard working and supportive parents that always made education a priority and dreams a possibility. They never failed to be at every student teacher conference, Tae Kwon Do tournament, and awards ceremony. As the eldest of five siblings, she hopes that she is setting a good example for the rest of her brother and sisters. Ashley states, “I hope they stay focused and keep trying hard in school. The best advice I can give to them or any other student is to stay involved because it keeps your mind open to many possibilities the world has to offer.” Born at the University of Davis while her father attended school, Ashley Del Valle will be continuing the legacy and attending the University of California-Davis this fall. She is entering with a major declared in Biological Sciences, with the hopes of entering medical school and one day becoming a doctor. She looks forward to joining an MMA club, studying abroad in Europe, volunteering with an environmentalist organization, and enjoying all college life has to offer.

Ashley Del Valle

Dania Alejandra Gudino

Helen Lee is the 2015 Central Valley High School class valedictorian.

Dania Gudino was born in Jalisco, Mexico. She came to the United States at the age of four. She moved to the Valley in 2001 with the hopes of one day obtaining the education and success her parents were unable to obtain. She had to learn a new language and adjust to the new country. “It was all worth it because that is the experience that has led me to where I am today,” she said. Dania was involved California Scholarship Federation, National Honor Society, and Spanish Club. Dania’s parents were unable to finish their education which encourages her to continue hers and make them proud. She has two brothers who attend Westport Elementary and Blaker Kinser, and she hopes to set an example for them as she will be the first in her family to attend college; she will be attending U.C. Davis. “Even though this thought of entering college is scary and new, it is also filled with happiness and excitement.”

MEET THE SALUTATORIANS OF CENTRAL VALLEY HIGH Daisy Ochoa Navjot Kanda Victoria Navarro Navjot Kanda is not the typical 17-year-old high school student. He and his sister were born in India and raised in Ceres. Navjot’s parents have continually supported and encouraged him to succeed in all of his endeavors, from education to photography and videography. His mother has worked tirelessly to ensure that he always receives the best opportunities. When he moved to the United States from India in 2002, Navjot did not know any English but he possessed a strong desire to learn. He is always happy and open to learning something new. Ever since Navjot first started school, education has been his top priority. His older sister, who graduated from Central Valley in 2011, was always there to guide him through the difficulties of high school, to inspire him to stay motivated, and to prepare him for college. Navjot is mature for his age, as exemplified by starting his own professional wedding videography business three years ago. In this work experience, he has obtained leadership, communication and business skills, and has discovered the importance of teamwork in the real world. Navjot will follow his sister’s footsteps in attending the University of California, Irvine in the fall. He will major in Business Information Management, which is a collaborative of computer science and business management. “The constant use of computers, along with my ever-growing awareness of their use in daily necessities, has helped me decide on the field of study that I will pursue in college,” he said. Navjot Kanda

Victoria Navarro, who has lived all her life in Ceres, first attended Don Pedro Elementary, then moved to Sinclear Elementary upon its opening. She is the youngest of four and the third child graduating from Central Valley High School, her oldest brother graduated from Ceres High in2006. Victoria is the first Victoria Navarro to graduate with a 4.0 grade point average in her family. At a young age Victoria was excelling in school. In fifth grade she received a perfect score on the California Standardized Test in math. She also received a perfect score on the California High School Exit Exam in math. Victoria has been very involved at Central Valley High School, serving as the ASB president this year while in her fourth year of leadership. She is also involved in cheerleading, Ambassador Club, National Honor Society and California Scholarship Federation. Victoria will be attending the University of California, Davis, this fall with a major in Biological Sciences. With the acceptance to Davis, she is the first in her family to go straight to a four-year university right out of high school. She hopes to find a career that will help better the community.

Born to hard working parents who sacrificed much so their children could take advantage of the opportunities that they did not have, Daisy Ochoa has lived in Ceres all her life. Her father has instilled in her the value of hard work as a means to reach one’s goals. Her mother served as an example to prove that education is a vessel that can carry one to sucDaisy Ochoa cess. With these two ideals in mind, Daisy was able to unite both concepts of hard work and education to strive for success in everything she does. The middle child and only girl of the three Ochoa children, Daisy aspires to set an example for her younger brother and influence him to reach prosperity. Growing up, she always felt connected with her Mexican roots and made sure to incorporate her Hispanic ideals into all aspects of her life. Her most memorable moments of high school include playing soccer four years and being anchor for CVTV. Daisy will be the first of her family to attend a fouryear university straight out of high school. She plans on attending University of California, Davis, in the fall and majoring in neurobiology, physiology, and behavior. She hopes to one day be a certified occupational therapist. Daisy looks forward to her time at U.C. Davis and aims to avoid getting a bike ticket.

Janelle Oliveros Janelle Kristel Villasenor Oliveros, 17, has lived in Ceres for themost of her life. She attended Samuel Vaughn Elementary when she was eight and followed her older sister at Blaker Kinser Junior High School and Central Valley High School. Janelle explained that her parents, Fred and Wilma Oliveros, had struggled to get the whole family into the United States but that the effort was worthwhile as she considers that her 11 years of educational experience in Ceres is a great privilege. Janelle’s favorite subjects were math and science, and she enjoyed all the science classes at CVHS, such as the highest math class,

AP Calculus. She recently was rewarded by the math and science department awards. Since the fourth grade, Janelle has been involved in the Ceres music program for almost 10 years. She specializes in the trombone and baritone, but also plays other instruments as well. She credited her skills in music as being nurtured by teachers Ric Campero, Cal Kindred, Miss Briar, and Mr. Hinojosa. Janelle joined the CVHS marching band, jazz band, and the Impact winter percussion, assuming the leadership roles of low brass section leader and drum major. Janelle was a member of CSF,

NHS, and PHAST clubs. She is also a leader in the Door Christian Fellowship Church, serving in the worship groups and teaching in the children’s church. Her excellence in her academic life has brought her many rewards. She believes that her motivation to excel throughout her subjects and activities to get these awards, such as the salutatorian title, were to make her parents proud. Janelle has planned a handful of goals in and out of college. “One of the things that I always think,” said Janelle, “is that, the only way people can come to opportunities, is if someone, just one person, decides to become a

5

miracle for them.” She described that she plans to enter the medical field, hoping to become a doctor. She notes that becoming a doctor is one of the larger ways to help others. She hopes that she can learn all that she can in college so she can both help her family and the many in need. She also aspires to join one of her church’s programs, which sends medical related aid into Africa to help those in need in the continent. Her goals may be ambitious, Janelle said, but they are worthwhile. She said that all her successes, inspirations, and goals are in appreciation and influence of her parents.

In her academic career, Princess has always set high expectations for herself in order to achieve her grand goals and aspirations. At Central Valley High School, she was the vice president of the Class of 2015, president of the PHAST club, treasurer of Interact, historian of the National Honors Society, and an active member in the Ceres Youth Commission, as well as the varsity tennis team. As the third daughter of four, Princess is the second to attend college and the first to graduate with a 4.1 cumulative grade point average. A Laotian-American who has chosen to continue her education at the University of California Davis, majoring in the Biological Sciences, Sorrayar Sounthala expresses her immense appreciation for her family for coming to the United States as refugees in search for a better life. It is thanks to them that she has developed a strong appreciation for education and the mentors who play active roles in contributing towards her academic growth. Her mother describes Sorrayar as “self-motivated,” which explains why she has accomplished so much at Central Valley High School. Sorrayar has earned a 4.1 accumulated grade point average, and is president of both the National Honor Society and the Soroptimistsponsored student club. VAL & SAL FROM PAGE 2 Anthony Gerads and Ben Middleton. “They’re a student’s teacher, I think that’s the thing,” said Manny. “They teach you the way you want to be taught but you don’t feel weird going up to them saying, ‘I don’t get this,’ or ‘I didn’t turn this in on time but what can I do?’” Gabby agreed that “Gerads and Middleton are great.” Manny was born in Mexico and came to the U.S. when he was two or three. Juan and Laura Jimenez became homesick for family back home and returned to Mexico. They came back across the border, settling in San Diego for a while and then the Valley because of the lower cost of living. His mother found work first. His father found a job but was laid off and started his own computer company. Manny attended Virginia Parks and Mae Hensley along with Gabby. Both enjoyed their high school experiences, with Manny playing soccer, tennis and wrestling and being involved with Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica, CSF, National Honor Society and Science Club. As captain of the tennis team, he enjoyed seeing the CHS team winning the Section title. Gabby had a well-rounded experience as president of CSF (of which she was a member since being a freshman), treasurer of Science Club, a member of Interact Club (two years), SHH (for three years), and playing soccer and tennis. She gave up soccer this year to prepare to play the character of Liesl von Trapp in the CHS musical, “The Sound of Music.” Singing is one of her passions. Both say they are eager to get into college but know they will miss the daily experience of Ceres High School and friends and family back home. “I was super eager all year and then these last two weeks I’m like, it’s too fast,” said Jimenez. “I really don’t want to leave. I like it here.” “You’re happy to go but not happy to leave, which is strange,” echoed Gabby. Their last duty will be speaking at graduation on Friday. Manny is less enthusiastic about writing and delivering a speech than Gabby. “I’m not a big fan of speaking,” said Juan. Gabby follows with: “I’m excited to speak.” Manny plans to convey his plans for the future and tell fellow graduates: “You’ll be successful if you’re happy.” According to Principal Linda Stubbs, the class of 2015 is taking a wide variety of paths. Thirty-seven percent have been accepted into a four-year school, 52 percent are continuing their education at a community college or trade school, six percent are going into the military and five percent are opting for work or other things fresh out of high school.
