New CEO Cranford ready for first Stanislaus County Fair BY RYAN MLCUAGHLIN Turlock Journal

With the Stanislaus County Fair just around the corner and residents from all over the Central Valley gearing up for twisting rides and fried foods, excitement is on the rise high. The eagerness to get the fair underway is even higher for the newly appointed Stanislaus County Fair Chief Executive Officer Matthew Cranford. Having grown up in the Central Valley and graduated from California State University, Stanislaus, Cranford’s deep-rooted connection to the area made him an obvious choice for the position. “It’s exciting, with the fair this size and everything we do to prepare, it’s

definitely a big part of the community,” said Cranford. Cranford started out by working at the San Mateo County Fair in 2008 where just a year later he was promoted to Fair Manager. Being at the helm for the Stanislaus County Fair however has presented Cranford with an entirely new set of hurdles to overcome before gates open July 8. “The most challenging part is every little thing that goes into it especially getting a solid grasp on everything that goes into organizing all the organizations from community to nonprofits,” said Cranford. “It’s refreshing to see groups that want to be a part of the fair and give back to the community.” This year’s fair looks to not only

bring back fairgoer favorites like concerts and carnival rides, but include a few new exhibits as well. “We’ve added new entertainment for family and kids including exhibits for high diving, drones and video games, as well as other technology based entertainment,” said Cranford. Even Cranford himself admitted to having a weakness for what is perhaps the greatest crowd pleaser at the fair: the food. “The food is definitely my favorite part,” said Cranford. “Now being a father, I like bringing my daughter to the fair to try all of the different items that come on a stick. This might be a cliché, but it’s always fun watching people try new fair food for the first time.”

The Stanislaus County Fair is introducing three new features at the 2016 event: an interactive Gaming Expo, the spectacular High Diving Pirates of the Caribbean, and the adorably entertaining Pig Races. “We try to make each Fair better than the year before, having new exhibits and entertainment achieves that,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. “We are extremely excited to have such wonderful, innovative and hands-on attractions at this year’s Fair.” The new Gaming Expo, presented by Sky Trek Aviation and sponsored by Jack in the Box, will replace Mind Works. Guests can explore the virtual world of interactive gaming and experience flying their own drone. The Gaming Expo gives guests the opportunity to participate in their favorite digital entertainment, while experiencing the virtual world of gaming. The new High Diving Pirates of the Caribbean Show tells a salty tale of pirates on the search for Treasure Island, where a fortune in gold and jewels are said to be buried in the sand. A 22-minute show featuring springboard and tower diving, comedy and clown diving, and of course the amazing high dive into a pool that is

only 9 ½ feet deep. Not only are pirates in town, but adorable little pigs are too. The latest racers to hit the Great American Speedway are sure to be a hit at the Fair. Each exciting and educational show includes four race heats featuring audience participation, pig trivia, and prize giveaways for winning race cheerleaders. The 2016 Stanislaus County Fair opens July 8 for a 10-day run. Fair guests can count on an award-winning experience that has been over 105 years in the making. In just a short time the Stanislaus County Fair will open the gates for their 105th year and along with all the blue ribbons, fast rides and jumbo corndogs will be a bevy of entertainment options for fairgoers. The Stanislaus County Fair begins a 10day run July 8, with nearly every night seeing a new headlining band or performer take to the Bud Light Variety Free Stage. All shows are included in the price of fair admission. Kicking off the Stanislaus County Fair will be pop singer Rachel Platten, whose hit “Fight Song” has been running up the charts. “Rachel Platten is an up and coming sensation with music that connects the audience through her inspirational messages,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. “She will bring a whole new performance dynamic that will captivate the audience.” Platten’s label debut “Wildfire” was released at the start of this year and sparked a promotional tour that has seen her perform around the world. “Fight Song” has topped iTunes and radio charts, and sold more than 2 million downloads in the U.S. alone. “I’m in love with the idea of connecting people,” Platten said. “Bringing people together is to me, the most important thing we can do in this life. I feel like that’s my mission with my music. I think that’s why I’m getting this chance right now.” The following night at the Fair will have a distinctive rock and roll vibe as Night Ranger comes to town. Night Ranger shot to fame in the 1980s with hits like “Sister Christian” and “Don’t Tell Me You Love Me.” They have sold over 17 million albums worldwide, and their songs have also been featured in Oscar-nominated films and hit TV shows. In 1983, Night Ranger earned widespread acclaim for their multi-platinum album “Midnight Madness,” which included their well-known hits, “Sister Christian,” When You Close Your Eyes,” and “(You Can Still) Rock In America.” Night Ranger continues to celebrate their 30th anniversary by non- stop touring, playing to sold-out shows around the world. “Night Ranger is one of those iconic rock bands that know what it means to put on a fantastic show,” said Alkhas. “Their rockin’ 80’s hits will have their

For three decades, the Commodores have remained a force in the music industry. Just like their hit song "Brick House," the Commodores have created a foundation that just won’t budge. The Commodores went on to sell over 60 million records for Motown. With hits like “Machine Gun” and “Sail On,” the Commodores became iconic artists. They not only produced six new albums, embarked upon a world-wide tour, but also have created their own record label, Commodores Records and Entertainment. Today the Commodores are not only recognized as talented and successful musicians, but as artists determined to continue their success into the future. Parmalee, the country band that has been rising in popularity since their 2014 debut, will be playing at the Stanislaus

County Fair on July 12. “Parmalee is an amazing country group,” said Alkhas. “We wanted to bring in a country rock act to attract our younger demographic as well and I know that they will put on a fantastic show.” Parmalee’s unique country rock sound has its roots in the bluegrass, traditional country, and southern rock genres, making them universally favored among country music fans. Parmalee recently made history when its multi-week #1 smash “Carolina” became the longest climbing single by a group in the 24-year history of the Billboard Country Airplay Chart. Their debut country album, “Feels Like Carolina”, has earned praise from numerous music critics. In 2014, Parmalee earned a semi-finalist nod for the Academy of Country Music’s coveted “New Artist of the Year” award. Their latest hit, “Close Your Eyes,” recently became their second consecutive Top 3 hit on country radio. grace the stage at the Stanislaus County Fair when country superstar Dwight Yoakam plays on July 14. Yoakam’s distinctive vocals, accented with his Kentucky croon, have made him a fan favorite for decades since debut album in 1985. Its release immediately yielded hit singles, and over the course of over 21 albums – totaling more than 25 million in sales worldwide – Yoakam has continued to passionately sing, write, and play music brimming with hard country and rock & roll. His latest record, “Second Hand Heart” was self-produced by Yoakam, and reflects where he has been, but also where he is going. “Songs never die – they’re just reborn,” Yoakam said. “All of us have that need to remind ourselves that life is always worth trying, every day – surviving to hope.” Country music artist Kellie Pickler has previously delighted audiences at the Stanislaus County Fair and is expected to do so again when she takes the stage July 15. “Kellie Pickler is a talented and charismatic performer who wins everyone’s hearts,” said Alkhas. “We are extremely excited to have her back performing at the Fair.”

Pickler grew up immersed in country music in the small town of Albemarle, North Carolina with the words of Tammy Wynette, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and Dolly Parton shaping her musical footing. She was first introduced into the music scene as a contestant on the fifth season of “American Idol.” Pickler has gone on to release four critically acclaimed albums, including her Gold-certified debut “Small Town Girl” as well as “100 Proof,” which Rolling Stone named the Best Country Album of 2011. Among her best known hits are the Gold-certified “Red High Heels,” “I Wonder,” and “Best Days of Your Life.”

As the fair comes to the end of its 10day run R&B music star Ashanti will be taking the stage. Ashanti landed the #1 spot on both the Billboard Top 200 and R&B album charts with her self-titled debut album “Ashanti.” With her hit song, "Foolish," Ashanti also secured the #1 top spot on SIX Billboard charts simultaneously, including Hot R&B/ Hip-Hop Airplay, The Billboard 200, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles and Tracks, Hot 100 Airplay, Top R&B/ Hip-Hop Albums and Hot 100! Band members José Guadalupe Esparza, Ramiro Delgado, Javier Villareal, and José Luís 'Choche' Villareal crafted a sound that paid tribute to the northern tradition while incorporating modern instruments like keyboards, as well as a more melodic, pop style with elaborate costumes. All shows at the Stanislaus County Fair begin at 8:30 p.m.

Fair hopes to spellbind audiences with returning act STAFF REPORTS Turlock Journal

The Stanislaus County Fair is bringing back crowd favorite Suzy Haner the Hypnotist for a series of performances during the 10-day run. Haner will be performing on the Community Stage at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. each day of the fair. “Her comedic personality and talent make her a favorite whenever she is here at the Fair,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. “You will not want to miss out on the opportunity to possibly see your friends hypnotized.” For the past 20 years Haner has been one of the most sought after performers

around the world. Appearing at countless fairs, corporate functions, and theme parks, including; Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, Six Flags, and the prestigious Improv Comedy Clubs. Her combination of talent and charisma landed her a segment on the television show, “Inside Edition.” Before becoming a hypnotist, Haner was a professional singer for 10 years, performing all across the U.S. as well as singing on several popular recordings and movie soundtracks. When she is not performing her own show, she is the Director of Commercial Music Department at the Orange County School of the Arts in Southern California. Haner’s shows are included in the price of the fair’s admission.

The Stanislaus County Fair will be debuting the empowHER Lounge during this year’s fair, with the goal of giving young girls and women inspiration to become great leaders in the community. STAFF REPORTS Turlock Journal

The Stanislaus County Fair has partnered with Vintage Faire Mall and Yonan’s Jewelers to bring guests a contemporary and inspirational lounge for young women, ages 16 to 25, to enjoy. The empowHER Lounge will be a lounge geared towards inspiring young girls to be great leaders in our community. “Young females need to feel more confident within themselves for the real world and harness better leadership skills,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. “This lounge will provide educational opportunities for that while having fun and feeling inspired.” Giving girls the confidence to be themselves through workshops is the goal of the lounge. The lounge will also be presenting the girls with the skills needed to empower others as much as empowering themselves. The lounge will provide daily presentations, presented by W.E.L.L. Leadership, a woman’s education and leadership league, on how to conduct themselves in different aspects of their daily lives. Presentations will include

topics such as becoming a better digital citizen; speaking up and finding their voice; as well as finding their cause and passion in life. The workshops are there to help harness their leadership skills, navigate their relationship with technology, and create meaningful and inspiring online content by being careful with what they are posting on social media. Guests who sign up for the seminars will also receive a Fair and Vintage Faire Mall Swag bag (maximum of 40 guests per session will be allowed). The lounge will also provide daily hair and makeup tutorials, presented by Paul Mitchell. Young women will be mentored by professionals on the latest styles and trends inspired by natural beauty. Young women will be encouraged to embrace and emphasize their natural features. Vintage Faire Mall participating retailers will also have a back-to-school fashion show that is geared towards educating young women on how to dress for the life they want to lead. Other tenants from Vintage Fair Mall will be featured in the lounge as well. The lounge will be open daily during the Fair on weekdays from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and weekends from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m.
