Fair offers 10 days of sizzling entertainment
The Stanislaus County Fair will open for its 106th season on July 14, continuing a tradition of celebrating the county’s agricultural heritage and offering visitors top-notch entertainment. “There are never ending options at the Fair, whether you are looking to just sit back and enjoy or participate in an event,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. “The Fair has something to offer each guest, you will not want to miss out on some of the free entertainment.” Watch as your friends are convinced to do outrageous things they would never attempt by one of the most sought-after performers around the world, Suzy Haner. Her combination of talent and charisma makes her a must-see at the Fair. If you are searching for something to entertain the kids, visit the pig races. Each exciting and educational show includes four race heats featuring audience participation, pig trivia, and prize giveaways for winning race cheerleaders. Another must-see event at the Fair is the high diving performance. Witness

Local hospitals offer healthcare-related activities

The Walk-Through Heart Exhibit will be on display all 10 days of the fair.
Visitors to this year’s Stanislaus County Fair will be able to take a walk through a giant human heart, play a game that tests their skill at performing surgery and learn about potentially life-saving hands-only CPR. Doctors Medical Center and Emanuel Medical Center have joined together to provide a variety of healthcare-related activities at the fair. Many of the activities will be available only on a special night –July 17 – jointly sponsored by the two hospitals. The Walk-Through Heart Exhibit, which is especially popular with children, will be on display all 10 days of the fair. This free, interactive exhibit is designed to educate visitors about the importance of heart health. It includes interactive questions about heart function and a heart-healthy lifestyle. The exhibit, which is wheel-chair and stroller accessible and air-conditioned, will be located adjacent to the giant corn dog concession, near the entrance to Kids Zone. “This is a fun exhibit for children and families to explore but it also serves a very serious educational purpose,” said Warren Kirk, CEO of Doctors Medical Center and CEO of Tenet Healthcare’s Central Valley Market. “Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of both men and women in the United States, so raising public awareness of cardiovascular disease is critical. Doctors Medical
and Emanuel Medical Center are pleased to be able to both entertain and educate our community at the fair.” On July 17, at their sponsored booth located near the Baby Care Center, the two hospitals will offer the following activities: • The game Giant Operation in which players use over-size tongs to carefully lift specified body parts through holes in an 8-footlong board representation of a “patient.” Lights and buzzers are activated when the tongs touch the sides of the holes. The game will help participants decide whether they have the dexterity to be a surgeon! • Instruction in “bystander” cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) – also known as hands-only CPR. This method, which is recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA), only requires the bystander to perform chest compressions on the patient and not breathe into the person’s lungs. The instruction will be provided in partnership with American Medical Response. Each person completing the training will receive a CPR kit from the AHA to take home and teach their family members and friends. In addition, the first 1,000 fair guests through the gate on July 17 will receive a container of sun screen, compliments of Doctors Medical Center and Emanuel Medical Center. Gates open at 5 p.m.

The Salvation Army will hold a toy drive at the Stanislaus County Fair gates on July 20. In exchange for a toy donation, Fair visitors will receive two carnival ride tickets from Butler Amusements.
CHRISTMAS IN JULY It’s Christmas in July at The Stanislaus County Fair with the annual toy drive. On July 20, the Stanislaus County Fair and The Salvation Army are holding a toy drive at the Fair gates. Fair guests who donate one or more toys will receive two carnival ride tickets from Butler Amusements. All donations will help local children receive gifts for Christmas this year. “The Fair is about making memories for the children in our community. We are happy to be a part of such a wonderful cause,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Fair. The Mayor’s challenge is back this year. Turlock Mayor Gary Soiseth has challenged his fellow mayors from the nine cities in Stanislaus County to add a competitive element to the toy drive. Modesto Mayor Ted Brandvold has agreed to take part in the challenge. Each mayor will staff an entrance gate for a two-hour block between the hours of 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on JULY 12, 2017 14 FAIR TAB
July 20. “The Mayor’s Challenge adds an element of friendly competition to a worthy cause,” said Soiseth. “We hope to break last year’s toy drive record to make sure children in communities across Stanislaus County can have a memorable Christmas.” No donation is too small for The Salvation Army. Every donation will help give toys to children during Christmas. If a guest forgets to bring a toy, the Fair has vendors that sell toys. For the past 19 years, the Turlock Salvation Army has worked with the Turlock Together organization to collect and distribute hundreds of food boxes and toys for families in need. The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the Universal Christian Church. Itis a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization. All donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

The empowHER Lounge will once again return to the Stanislaus County Fair and will offer a series of presentations during the Fair’s 10-day run.
Fair brings back empowHER Lounge In the hopes of embarking on a new tradition of building confidence and leadership skills in the region’s young women, the Stanislaus County Fair will once again host the award-winning empowHER Lounge. The Stanislaus County Fair has partnered with Vintage Faire Mall, Yonan’s Jewelers, Women’s Education and Leadership League and KHOP @ 95.1 to bring guests a contemporary and inspirational lounge for young women, ages 16 and older, to enjoy. The empowHER Lounge will be a lounge geared towards inspiring young girls to be great leaders in our community. “Young women must feel confident within themselves and harness leadership skills to succeed in the real world,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. “This lounge will provide fun educational opportunities that will inspire young girls to be leaders in our community.” Alkhas created the lounge to teach young women how to support each other instead of competing, which will set the tone for becoming a successful leader. “When women adopt innovative leadership roles they can create a unique set of skills that can broaden the company’s environment,” Alkhas said.
JULY 12, 2017 16 FAIR TAB
“Women leaders can nurture and recruit other talented females and in turn create a supportive environment that actively empowers women, like putting family first or taking the pressure off.” Giving girls the confidence to be themselves through workshops is the goal of the lounge. The lounge will also encourage girls to empower others as much as they empower themselves. W.E.L.L. Leadership, a woman’s education and leadership league, will provide daily presentations on how to conduct themselves in different aspects of their daily lives. Presentations will include topics such as becoming a better digital citizen; speaking up and finding their voice; as well as finding their cause and passion in life. The workshops help young women improve their leadership skills, navigate their relationship with technology, and create meaningful and inspiring online content by being careful with what they are posting on social media. Guests who sign up for the seminars will also receive a Fair and Vintage Faire Mall Swag bag (maximum of 40 guests per session will be allowed). The lounge will be open daily during the Fair from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends.
