The Fair is a special time of year in Stanislaus County. While the county is home to over half a million people, during Fair time it feels like the rural community that is the heart of the Valley.
Life happens at the fair, as the new Fair logo states, and we are excited to be a part of that. We will once again be sponsoring a day at the Fair, and we look forward to being a part of your family’s Fair experience.
We hope this Fair preview magazine will help you plan your trip to the Fair and get the most out of all the exhibits, arena events, concerts and wondering performers.
See you at the Fair!

STANISLAUS COUNTY FAIR NEW CEO WELCOMES
By CHRISTOPHER CORREA
or the rst time in the Stanislaus County Fair’s 112-year history, a woman will be leading the charge as Kimberly A. Williams was named as the next CEO in March. Williams succeeds Matt Cranford, who served as Fair CEO for over seven years and resigned from the position in December to take on a new role overseeing facility operations at the California Exposition and State Fair.
Williams has worked at over 25 annual fairs, 18 of which have been the Stanislaus County Fair in Turlock. She rst found herself doing miscellaneous jobs for the Stanislaus County Fair in the 1990s before becoming a permanent employee in the concession department until 2010. For the past 10 years, she has served as operations manager, designing and executing the layout of the grounds with a mission to boost revenue and enhance patron experience.
Williams said. “While my love for this fair is steeped in those traditions, it is enriched and inspired by my visions for the future.”
Prior to working in the fair industry, Williams graduated Summa Cum Laude, with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of the Pacific. Her rst job was at the Chowchilla Fair in the administration o ce booking commercial vendors and processing entries for the Chowchilla Stampede. Working at fairs is in her blood as her father has worked as a repair manager for fair operations in the Bay Area.
“Kim is one of the most talented fair executives I’ve known, and our board is so excited to have her lead our fairgrounds and build it into one of the most dynamic venues in California,” said Stanislaus Fair Board President Ray Souza. “We know she will inspire all of us.”
Williams has served in the interim CEO position since Cranford stepped down just over three months ago. At the time Cranford similarly expressed the ultimate con dence in his colleague.
“Kim has a lot of experience on site… she’s grown up in the fair industry. She probably actually knows more about fairs than I ever will,” Cranford joked.

Withstanding the Test of Time
Bank of Stockton is a commercial bank with a proven track record of sound banking management principles and a strong consumer and commercial customer base. As the oldest bank in California still operating under its original charter, we are here for the long haul. We have survived recessions, depressions, economic downturns, COVID-19 and many uncertainties throughout our history. Established in 1867, just two years after the Civil War, the Bank of Stockton’s founding principle, “With the safety of the depositors in mind” was a promise to our customers and the community to keep depositors’ money safe and secure. As we enter our 156th year of community banking, we’ve weathered many historical challenges along the timeline of our existence but the foundation upon which we began remains a constant you can bank on.
We are proud to continue “Withstanding the Test of Time” and be a source of strength and stability for our customers and our communities.

BLOODLESS BULLFIGHTS
The Turlock Pentecost Association Bloodless Bullfights will be in the Estrella JaliscoArena at 6:30 p.m. July 9. This style of bullfighting differs from the Portuguese-style in the fact that the bull isn’t hurt or killed. The same promise to not hurt the animal is not given to those who choose to step into the arena and test their courage against the bull. The forcados are the bullfighters. In Portuguese tradition, they taunt the animal in hopes that it will charge them. They follow the cavaleiros, who battle the bull from horseback into the arena. The bullfights have been created to always be bloodless. The cavaleiros use a Velcrotipped banderilla and a short
spear-shaped tool, which attaches to a Velcro pad on the bull’s back. After the cavaleiros finish what they call their “dance with the bull,” the forcados enter the arena. They challenge the bull directly, aiming to grab the bull by the horns without any protection or defense. The forcados this year are Tiago Carreiras, Joao Soller-Garcia and Antonio Nuncio. These brave men will enter the arena and face the bull head on. Along with the bullfight, traditional bands like Filarmonica Portuguesa de Tulare will also be at the arena.
Tickets for the Bloodless Bullfights are $15 to $20 and can be purchased at: stancofair.com or at the Fair’s box office, 900 N. Broadway, Turlock.

TYPHOON
You won’t have to brave a storm to experience the wind and thrills on the Typhoon. See the fair in a blur as the fabulous Typhoon takes you on a fast, updown-around slopes that have you travel faster and faster, then backward too.
FOOTLOOSE
Thrill-seekers have touted this ride as one of the Midway’s “craziest!” On the Footloose the ride’s two gigantic arms loop counterclockwise to each other, turning completely upside down. Riders are secured by over the shoulder harnesses while their legs dangle free in the open air. This ride is sure to thrill even the bravest of riders.
SHAKE UP
The Shake Up is one of the most exciting rides on the midway. Made in England it stands 45 feet high and has 6-4 passenger seats. Passengers sit in one of four on the outside edge of the ride. As the Shake Up begins to rise six sets of seats begin to spin. Up, down, and around passengers’ thrill to the sight and feel of Shake Up.
ROCK STAR

18 FAIR MAG 2023 209MULTIMEDIA.COM
seats 16 people and takes them on a thrilling journey into the sky! Passengers are secured by over the shoulder harnesses as they dangle in expectation. Once the ride begins the seats slowly rotate as the entire boom begins to swing horizontally. Passengers swing over the midway directly overhead of those watching from the front of the ride. The ride climax is reached as the boom reaches a height of over 40 feet in the air while the passenger seats rotate.
ZIPPER
The Zipper has been one of the Midway’s most recognizable attractions for years, providing thrills to riders from teens to adults. There’s more spinning going on with the Zipper than an out-of-control top. While the ‘cages’ holding two passengers each rise and descend on a tower boom, each spin independently and the entire boom turns, too. Three times the action, backed by spectacular lighting bringing them back for more.
RAPTOR
The Raptor has a familiar look of the classic scrambler, but with an extra special kick that multiplies the fun and excitement. Four arms are connected to seats in pods of three. Each pod of seats spins counterclockwise while the entire arm turns counterclockwise giving riders the feeling of being in the center of a crazy vortex. The Raptor has 18 seats each holding 2 adults per seat.
SCRAMBLER
Families delight as they spin in two directions at the same time. The Scrambler has 12 seats each seat capable of holding 3 people. The main frame spins as each arm of seats spins independently, creating a feeling of funky flight. The Scrambler also features Deluxe Lighting and programmed incandescent “Ultra Lights.”
HAPPY SWINGS
This small swing rides gently rocks back and forth just like a porch swing.
SLIDE
No playground would ever be complete without a slide! Kids of any age enjoy the thrill of this giant slide as they sail down the undulating path. Passengers climb a stairway, higher and higher to the top of the slide and then laugh and squeal with delight as they sail to the bottom.
ALIEN INVASION
The Alien Invasion welcomes passengers aboard an enclosed alien spaceship. Once inside the entire ride revolves, spinning at 24 RPM and uses centrifugal force to sweep passengers off of their feet giving them the feeling of weightlessness. All aboard this 45-person capacity Alien Invasion for one wild ride
SUPER SHOT DROP TOWER
The world-class Super Shot Drop Tower is one of Butler Amusements’ most popular rides. Unlike any other ride on our midway, the Super Shot will bring a new dimension of thrills to your carnival goers. 12 passengers are loaded into each circular passenger station. Over the shoulder harnesses secure patrons while they are gently lifted up the 90-foot tower. Once the passenger station reaches the top, it is released in an accelerated freefall and riders experience G-Forces more than 3½ times normal. Riders are then cushioned by a magnetic braking system stopping the station before it reaches the base of the tower. The Super Shot is an exciting spectacular addition to the Butler midway.
PHARAOH S FURY
The Pharaoh’s Fury is a spectacular swinging boat ride. Passengers climb aboard and are secured by lap bars, once the Pharaoh’s boat begins to rock, riders experience the feeling of weightlessness as they soar through the air.
DIZZY DRAGON
On the Dizzy Dragon four magical dragon’s welcome children and parents aboard for a smooth ride. Passengers can move the ride at their own pace by turning a giant steering wheel inside the dragon’s belly spinning themselves round and round while the entire ride revolves as well. This ride is a great introduction for ride enthusiasts in training before stepping up to the Tilt A Whirl.
AMERICANA CAROUSEL
For decades, audiences have been awed by the beautifully handcrafted majesty of the carousel. To witness The Americana Merry Go Round is to see this piece of Americana in all its glory. This 30-foot Americana Themed Carousel features jumping horses, and 2 chariots. Parents and children create memories while they enjoy the sights and sounds of this beautiful ride together!
WACKY WORM COASTER
The Wacky Worm coaster is designed for the whole family. This two-level family roller coaster is a great way for the entire family to enjoy the carnival. This brightly painted worm, surrounded by flower cup lights, is a charming addition to the Midway.
LOLLI SWINGS
Enjoy all the fun of the sweet colors and savory sensation of a lollipop without the calories and sugar! This brightly colored ride has 16 swings decorated with large swirl lollipops and lights. The centerpiece is a large clown complete with a red nose and floppy shoes.
WIND SURFER
This exciting ride, manufactured by Wisdom Industries, is the very first of its kind and Butler Amusements is the first to own it! The Winder Surfer has eight cars each with a sail and a two-person capacity
19 FAIR MAG 2023 209MULTIMEDIA.COM
seat. Each wing is controlled by the riders, so the seat flies up and down. The center of the Wind Surfer tips and lifts to simulate the swooping action of Wind Surfing on ocean waves.
YO-YO
Passengers take their seats and then slowly rise into the air and they’re off on a variation of the swing, called the Yo-Yo. As it turns the top leans, giving riders the thrill of ‘flying’! A family ride for youngsters, teens, and adults.
TILT A WHIRL

“I love acting! I love doing sitcoms; that’s something I really want to do more of,” exclaims the multi-faceted R&B superstar.

The Stanislaus County Fair will welcome Latin Grammy Nominee “El Dasa” on July 9. e concert will be hosted by Radio Lazer 93.9 and sponsored by La Mejor Magazine.
El Dasa premieres his second record production entitled “Alegre y Enamorado,” which contains 14 songs with the collaboration of famous composers and new talents, inspired by the life of the young star. An album that, as El Dasa says, “is made with a lot of heart, passion, dedication and, above all, sincere” since the songs are his own experiences, thus giving it a more intimate twist. “Alegre y Enamorado” contains the singles “Por Ser Bonita” and “Mi Amiga, Mi Amor, Mi Amante,” both already have their respective music videos, as well as including musical proposals such as a Quinceañera waltz and a theme dedicated to single mothers, among others.

e group outlasted the next two decades as well.
ey stood out as the rare act whose presence could be felt loud and clear at Woodstock ’99. Twenty years a er its initial release, the Billboard Music Award-winning “My Own Worst Enemy” not only went double- platinum, but Post Malone also covered it on Instagram Live as did Kelly Clarkson and Jimmy Fallon on his late night show. Further speaking to their enduring in uence, they’ve inspired think pieces by everyone from American Songwriter to Kerrang! while Consequence of Sound named them one of the “100 Best Pop Punk Bands.” Not to mention, their music blared through American Reunion, Central Intelligence, Parks and Recreation, Rock Band, and beyond as they also impressively averaged over 2.2 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
e guys have amassed a catalog highlighted by fan favorites such as the platinum A Place in the Sun [1999], Atomic [2001], Lit [2004], e View from e Bottom [2012], and ese Are e
Days [2017]. Meanwhile, they teased the next chapter with “Yeah Yeah Yeah” in 2021, arriving to acclaim from Loudwire, Alternative Press, and more.
Now, the quartet—brothers Ajay [vocals] and Jeremy Popo [guitar], Kevin Baldes [bass], and Taylor Carroll [drums]—continue to do what they do best on their seventh full-length album and 2022 debut for Round Hill Records, Tastes Like Gold.
“We made a conscious decision to go back to when we had arrived at what we represented musically,” says Ajay. “It took a little bit of time to cleanse the palette and hit reset. However, the creativity owed better than it had in the past couple of decades.”
“We just decided to make what people expect from Lit and, honestly, what we expect from Lit,” explains Jeremy. “Our fans have been very cool and gracious over the years. ey’ve allowed us di cult to go back to that place when we were in our early twenties in an Anaheim warehouse with cases of cheap beer and friends without a care in the world other than the next show. While everybody reevaluated the whole world, we tried to make a really fun rock ‘n’ roll record.”
“We managed to not only make a classic record with a modern approach, but we did it during a pandemic. We realized you don’t have to be consumed by negativity and social media to the point where it sti es your ability to

have fun, be happy, and do what you’re good at. Maybe the music inspires you to turn all of the other stu o and get back to what makes you happy.”
When you rock out with this epic band you can’t help but feel nostalgic. e Stanislaus County Fair will welcome “ e All-American Rejects” on July 13. is band is Sponsored by Ten-Pin Fun Center and hosted by 97.7 KWIN.
Vocalist/bassist Tyson Ritter and guitarist Nick Wheeler were best friends in high school in Stillwater, Oklahoma, when they founded e All-American Rejects in 1999. And while their emo-pop band has traveled far and wide and sold millions of albums in the years since, their music retains an irrepressible energy and infectious scrappiness, two qualities that seem quintessentially teenaged in the best sense.

ey’ve also always understood the lasting value of big sticky melodies, a lesson they absorbed from a wide range of early in uences that included Bon Jovi and Def Leppard, as well as emo forebears such as Weezer and Jimmy Eat World. Already fully realized on their 2002 indie hit “Swing, Swing,” e All-American Rejects’ catchy mix of arena rock, power pop, and emo soon landed them a deal with DreamWorks. Later hits like 2005’s “Dirty Little Secret” and 2008’s “Gives You Hell”—which hit No. 1 on the iTunes chart—con rmed the wide appeal of Ritter and Wheeler’s sometimes snarky and always punchy songwriting.
Platinum album Rock and Roll band “Blue Oyster Cult” will hit the Coors Light stage on July 14. e concert will be hosted by 104.1 e Hawk.

FAIR PROPOSAL
Smiles abounded at the 2012 Stanislaus County Fair opening — especially for fair visitors who saw Mike Munch of Modesto propose to his girlfriend Lorene Novoa in front of hundreds of people, and she never saw it coming.
Mike, Lorene and her three children watched as a flash mob from the YES Company erupted in
front of the big Ferris wheel. Then suddenly Mike joined in the flash mob and Lorene was shocked. Moments later Mike knelt down and held out his ring while the flash mob and the crowd of people chanted “say yes!”
Through a grinning face she said yes and the crowd erupted. What a way to kick off the fair.

TWIGGY THE WATER SKIING SQUIRREL
n 1978, a baby squirrel was rescued a er being blown from her nest during a hurricane. Chuck and Lou Ann Best chose to take her in and make her a part of their family. e little squirrel adapted very well to her new home in Sanford, Florida.
Shortly therea er, Chuck bought his daughter a remote controlled boat for her birthday.
eir friends started teasing him saying that he bought it for himself, since he played with it all the time. Defending himself, he quipped, “I have to learn to drive the boat so I can teach my squirrel to waterski!” In that moment, Chuck and Lou Ann decided they were going to teach their squirrel to ski while on their river outings.
Twiggy has been performing since September of 1979, traveling all across the US, Canada, Bermuda, Europe and
Germany. She has appeared in numerous books, magazines, newspapers, and television shows all over the world.
Chuck and Lou Ann also trained other animals to water-ski, two miniature horses, two French poodles, a black cat, an armadillo and a toad. ey taught one of their squirrels named Ollie to jet-ski. Chuck and Lou Ann also taught three squirrels to ski in a pyramid and named the act “Lights, Camera, Action.” Other than water skiing, Twiggy also learned to hang glide and ride in a helicopter!
In November of 1997, Chuck Best had a heart attack and drowned while saving the life of his stepfather. Lou Ann canceled all shows. She asked for a sign and that is just what she got. One a ernoon, while sitting in her dining room, a squirrel showed up at her sliding glass door. Lou Ann let the squirrel into the house and immediately started working on water ski train-
ing in order to continue on the business. Just like in the beginning when all this craziness began, she was ooded with phone calls. Everyone wanted Twiggy.
Lou Ann trained Twiggy IV and started touring again with this amazing water-ski act. Due to her husband’s passing, Lou Ann decided to make water safety an important part of Twiggy’s act. She created a squirrel-sized life jacket for Twiggy to wear in her performances. erea er, all of Twiggy’s shows were focused on teaching her fans about water safety.
A er 39 years, Lou Ann decided it was time for her to retire her tour. Lou Ann’s son, Chuck Best Jr. decided to take on the family business and continue Twiggy’s story. Chuck and his ancé, Toni, have reimagined his parents’ show and together they embarked on an all new, revamped, interactive and exciting show for Twiggy. Twiggy is now the spokes animal for e National Safe Boating Council’s “Wear It” Campaign promoting water safety all over the world.
is amazing squirrel will be performing each day at the Stanislaus County Fair.
