Food Network to film at the STANISLAUS COUNTY FAIR The Stanislaus County Fair has been chosen to be featured on the Food Network’s new show “Carnival Eats.” After extensive research and contacting the Fair’s food vendors, the Food Network Channel made the decision to feature The Stanislaus County Fair in their “Carnival Eats” show. “This is a great opportunity for us to not only showcase the importance of Fair’s in California, but to highlight our great community in Stanislaus County and the mouth-watering food we have at the Fair,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for The Stanislaus County Fair.
Food Network TV series “Carnival Eats” features the unique and delicious foods found at carnivals and fairs. “Carnival Eats” is produced by award-winning filmmaker James Hyslop, and will premiere later this summer on the Food Network, Great American Country and The Cooking Channel. “Carnival Eats” is similar to the series “Diners, Drive Ins and Dives.” The host of the show will be actor Noah Cappe. The show has already chosen the food vendors that will be featured and filmed on July 12 and 13 during the run of the Fair.

Fair Food Favorites Corn Dogs
The corn dog, pogo, dagwood dog, wobo, pluto pup, mercury mutt, krusty pup, or corny dog is a hotdog coated in batter and deep fried in oil, although some are baked. Almost all corn dogs are served on wooden sticks, though some early versions were stickless. In 1942, Niel Fletcher invented the corn dog for the Texas state fair.
Funnel Cakes
Funnel cakes are a deep fried pastry made by pouring the batter through a funnel into hot fat, and then coating with powdered sugar or honey. They are a Pennsylvania Dutch specialty.
National Corndog Day is a celebration of the corn dog, tater tots, and American beer that occurs on the first Saturday of March of every year.
Funnel cakes are typically served plain with powdered sugar, but can also be served with jelly, cinnamon, chocolate, fresh fruit, or other toppings.
37660_1
Dave Barham, proprietor of Santa Monica, California’s Hot Dog On a Stick, started selling the tasty treats in 1946.
One of the oldest authentic recipes for a food like what we call funnel cakes is German and is dated back to 1879. The oldest recipe in an English language cookbook, referred to as funnel cakes, turned up in 1935.

Caramel Apples
Dan Walker, an employee of a food company back in the 1950s, is credited with the invention of the caramel apple. Vito Raimondi set up the very first caramel apple machine in 1960 in Chicago, Illinois. The best apples are those that help balance the sweetness of the caramel and are easy to bite into. A tart Granny Smith apple is a good choice and is the standard for many caramel apple makers.

thing tastes better fried — especially hamburgers and peaches. Of course, I had to have a fair staple so I chose a corn dog. But I didn’t just settle for the traditional hotdog fried in cornmeal batter. Instead, I opted for a lobster corndog at Sharkey’s— and boy was I pleasantly surprised. I topped off my adventure with a trip to New Orleans Cajun Cooking where I was met with Big Easy favorites like deep fried gator, jambalaya, and crawfish etoufee. Needless to say, I might be booking a flight to New Orleans soon. Take a look at Frankie’s “Fair Food Adventures” from 2013 at turlockjournal.com.
Journal reporter Frankie Tovar takes a bite of a fried hamburger from Lucky Seven.
There was no way I could hit every booth of deep fried, dipped and buttered treats, so I had to choose just a few.
When a 2013 Turlock Journal Facebook survey found that food was the main attraction to the Stanislaus County Fair for our readers, I knew this was my chance. I’ve always wanted to do a fair food version of the popular Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.” So, I hit the fair with an empty stomach and open mind. There was no way I could hit every booth of deep fried, dipped and buttered treats, so I had to choose just a few. In my two-part video “Fair Food Adventures,” I got a chance to try out some new menu items and satisfied my fair culinary dreams. At Lucky Seven I learned that every-

The Stanislaus County Fair opens its all-star concert line-up with five-time Grammy winner Wyonna Judd on July 11, and the stars keep on coming throughout the fair’s 10-day run. Judd has sold over 30 million albums worldwide spanning her epic 30-year career. Charting countless singles including 20 #1 hits and over 60 industry awards, the iconic performer was once dubbed by Rolling Stone as “the greatest female country singer since Patsy Cline.” “Wynonna is a staple in the country music industry for over 30 years,” said Adrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. “We are extremely thrilled to have such a legend perform at our Fair.” Legendary Billboard chart topping group, Kansas, will be shaking things up

Three time Broadcast Music Inc. song of the year winner Rodney Atkins will take the stage on July 14. The “Celebration” will continue with Kool & the Gang on July 15. “Kool & the Gang brings back many

The group consists of members Dinah Jane Hansen, Ally Brook, Camila Cabello, Normani Kordei, and Lauren Jauregui. After ending up in 3rd place on the American
version of the “X-Factor”, the group was signed by Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid’s record labels, Sysco Music and Epic Records. Their debut “Better Together”, released in October 2013, skyrocketed to #2 on iTunes and now officially lands the group their first Top 10 album, which debuted at

hard-rocking Blackhearts. “This is a show that rock ‘n’ roll fans will not want to miss,” said Alkhas. As the leader of the hardrocking Blackhearts, Jett has had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll,” “I Hate Myself For Loving You” and “Crimson and Clover.” Recently Jett released her latest album “Unvarnished” in October 2013. Jett was one of only two women named to Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 greatest guitar players of all time. Since co-founding the all-girl punk group, the Runaways, at age 15, Jett’s determination and drive have kept her in the public eye. Popular Latin Spirit Award Winner Ezequiel Pena will perform on the final night of the Stanislaus County Fair. “Ezequiel Pena has made a name for himself in both Mexico and the United States,” said Alkhas. “He offers a unique style and sound who is sure to wow the crowd.”
County’s best livestock
TO BE SOLD AT THE FAIR Local bidders will have the chance to take home some of the finest livestock in the Central Valley at the Stanislaus County Fair’s 47th Annual Replacement Heifer Sale on July 11 and the 50th Annual Junior Livestock Auction on July 19 at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds, located at 900 N. Broadway in Turlock. Buyers can pre-register for the sale and auction at the Fair’s Exhibit Office, in the Costco Commercial Exhibits Building E-2, until 5 p.m. July 16. “The 4-H and FFA exhibitors tend and care for their animals all year for and many of them use the money raised at the Heifer Sale and Junior Livestock Auction for their college fund or other necessities,” saidAdrenna Alkhas, spokesperson for the Stanislaus County Fair. “I think bidders would be hard-pressed to find animals that are better fed and better cared for than those exhibited at the Stanislaus County Fair.”
Buyers are invited to the 47th Annual Replacement Heifer Sale on July 11, following the Heifer Preview, which begins at 7 p.m. in the Thurman Pavilion. See the county’s finest rabbits, poultry, market beef, swine, sheep and goats at the 50th Annual Junior Livestock Auction starting at 8 a.m. July 19. Catalogs for the 2014 Replacement Heifer Sale are available now in the Fair’s Livestock Office. The Livestock Office is located on the Fairgrounds, near the Soderquist Road entrance. The catalogs are sponsored by Yosemite Farm Credit. Catalogs for the Junior Livestock Auction will be available on the morning of the auction and will be distributed during bidder registration and check-in. With over 1,500 4-H and FFA animals entered in the 2014 Stanislaus County Fair, this year’s sale and auction are sure to produce an impressive roster of livestock.

The Stanislaus County Fair is a bit more magical with the return of the Wizard’s Challenge. The 8,000 square foot interactive exhibit is designed to teach kids about the fun side of science, with the help of a little magic of course. “It’s better than the rides at the fair,” said 11 year-old Jorja Agnelli in 2013. Throughout the two dozen displays that the exhibit offers children can create man-sized bubbles or high tech music, manipulate a robotic arm, dance
through a wall of light, place hands on a plasma ball, and travel through a 20-foot long rotating dragon’s lair. “It’s all about the bubbles,” said 7-yearold Eddie O’Neill in 2013. “I could stay here all day playing.” The exhibit was designed by Clay and Elaine Everett, creators of the Rainforest Adventure that was the highlight of the Kids Zone in years past. Admission to Wizard’s Challenge is included in the fair admission price.

Blog offers tips on fair fashions BY MICHELLE OLIVER
It’s summer time and that means fair season. You’ve got your pre-sale fair tickets, carnival wristband, enough money to keep you in corn dogs and elephant ears for the entire visit and even a pair of shades to block out that sizzling summer sun. But what exactly should you wear to the fair? This is the question that the Stanislaus County Fair’s Imagine the Fashion blog is hoping to answer.
Outfit 1
Outfit 2 This is a very casual and classy outfit. Dressing for comfort is the way to go, especially at the fair. With all the walking around at the fairgrounds, flats are the best way to go. This is a great outfit to wear on those hot summer nights. It does not show a lot of skin and is still very practical to walk around in and enjoy the concerts. This outfit is definitely a hot trend for this summer. This yellow shirt is just the right amount of bright to add a little flare, sometimes all you need is some color to spice things up. Grey flats and a black necklace are the perfect accessories to finish out this look.

Outfit 3 Get into full on floral mode with this flirty dress. Pair it with cowboy boots because, after all, it is the fair and we do live in a very agriculturally driven area. This combination of neutral colors will have you standing out in the crowd and in a good way. Hopefully, these boots will be way more practical than wearing high heels or wedges and not have your feet feeling aching by the end of the night. The necklace adds some sparkle, as a simple accessory that does so much for your outfit. Throw on a cross-body bag and you are set to enjoy a country concert on a hot summer night!

Most people have a love / hate relationship with polka dots these days. However, you’ve got to love polka dots and stripes! Could it get any better? Pair it with denim shorts for the perfect combination for a night at the Destruction Derby. Denim shorts are the clothing item of summer; they can be paired with so many different shirts and shoes. Dark wash denim shorts go great with lighter colored shirts as they complement each other perfectly. This specific pair of shorts are good because they are a bit longer than most and quite frankly, we need to keep it classy. The black sandals are comfortable, yet still very fashionable. Top it off with a sparkly bracelet to add a little flair and you are set!
Country Casual: His and Hers
3
These two outfits are perfect for men and women who like to dress country casual. For the men, it’s a button down collared shirt, jeans and boots. It will more than likely be hot during the fair so a short sleeve shirt, in summer yellow, is a great option. It’s paired with traditional brown boots and bootcut jeans. This is a great combination for the typi-
cal country man that will be heading out to the rodeo. For those women who like jeans that have sparkle or designs on the back pockets, this is the outfit for you. These dark wash denim jeans are paired with a subtle grey shirt as to not over power the designs on the back pockets. Finish it off with dark brown pointed-toe boots and a bright coral cross body bag. For more fair fashion ideas, visit www.stancofair. com/imagine-the-fashion-blog/
