2015 record: 6-5; 3-2 CCC Head Coach: Tom Tyler Points per game allowed: 18.5 (204 total) Points per game scored: 28 (309 total)

T

he Pride are coming off a dominating year defensively. They only allowed 204 points over 11 games, which was an average of 18.5 points per game. They were led by a powerful handful of seniors on both sides and were able to amass an average of 28 points per game. However, the Pride is fortunate to return a solid core who hope to compete for more than a CCC title in the upcoming year. There is no question that a lot of focus is on the humble, yet very dominating left tackle in Chris Martinez who stands at 6-foot-4 and over 270-pounds. Martinez is a three-year varsity player for head coach Tom Tyler and has already committed to the University of Nevada-Reno on a fullride — Pride alum and 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick's college team. He will be blocking for an offense that returns standout running back and receiver Devan Bass and quarterback Jacob Perez, who were key players for the Pride as juniors in the CCC just a season ago. Their 3-2 CCC record was good enough to earn them a postseason berth in the Division-II CIF Sac-Joaquin Section tournament but unfortunately the Pride fell to No. 6 Del Campo as the No. 11 seed in the bracket, 28-20. The Pride return a year wiser for a group of seniors who are ready and keen to make a long run behind the experience of Perez, says Tyler. “It's always nice to have a QB returning,” said Tyler. “Perez has a good handle on what's going on in the field and I think he knows better what everyone is doing each play. I'm excited to see his feet and he has a strong arm. We also added things and some new weapons.” Some of those new weapons include Kamio Borja and Marcus Mcbay. Linebacker and fullback Brandon Pacheco will be utilized mostly on offense as a fullback, but he adds on a versatility that is uncommon. Brendan Patterson, at 6-foot-2, 180-pounds, might prove to be one of the best safeties around, according to Tyler. “We lost a few starters like Sinue Cortez at safety but Brendan Patterson might be the best safety and a good receiver as well,” said Tyler. “He should be a good player and we are happy with that. Also, Austin Bird can cover for us and he will be part of the defense.” The team can't forget about another versatile weapon in Bass, who was explosive just a season ago, used all over the field, as a defensive back, running back, and receiver among various other duties including special teams.

Along with Martinez, center JT Mercer and tackle Adrian Martinez will be additions to a line that looks to stand as one of the most athletic in the CCC with two tackles standing over 6-foot-4, and weighing roughly over 255 each. Junior Brendan Tallent, also a wrestler, will look to get plenty of snaps in and on the defensive line, and Alex Baker and Julian Barrera should be stalwarts if they can keep healthy. “We did lose seven starters on offense, we have to replace but I am real happy with our guys. Tyler Stout has been competing and should be in the mix, I really like the guys we have in place,” said Tyler about the line. “I think we always go into all we do by putting our best foot forward every day. We don't talk about winning and losing,” Tyler added. “We talk about the hard work we are putting in and dedication from kids working since December. I could not be happier for it and we have a great contingent of 40 plus kids showing up, they seem really close and care about doing things the right way and are very coachable. "We have not talked about team goals, we talk about being there for each other and have one another's backs.”

urlock is coming off back-to-back playoff seasons and back-to-back years of defeating Pitman for the first time since their inaugural meeting and this year the team is looking just as capable of accomplishing that and much more. Led by two of the Central California Conference's best in Danny Velasquez and Mustafa Noel-Johnson, the Bulldogs also bring in a big core of junior talents to the team that seem to compliment the remainder of the seniors who are back and hungrier than they've ever been. “These kids have been working hard,” said Turlock head coach James Peterson. “Mustafa and Danny, they are the leaders but we have tons of kids from that class which are great athletes and have been in their shadow and I don't see them sitting down, they seem to want some action as well.” Of all the six schools the Journal covers, Turlock had the biggest margin of defeat per matchup at 15 points per game. They were able to dominate on defense, especially up front with their front seven, front eight at times. The Bulldogs were able to constantly put pressure on the opposition and force them to throw the ball, considering their run defense was their strength all season long. As the game wore on, the opposing side found it tougher to gain yards on the ground and this year's Bulldog squad looks to

play the same game. Last year's star inside backer Chris Silva hands over the torch to his younger brother, and last year's starting linebacker Dom Silva. Silva is just as capable as his brother in containing the run game and providing the defense with a leader. Along with Noel-Johnson will be Juan 'Mango' Lopez, who was a strong defensive linemen from a year ago and a very consistent pass rusher. “We will rely on our pass rush more than last year. We want to bring the heat,” said Peterson. “I am really proud of the guys and throw the line a bone, we return four of five. That right there and staying consistent, the coaches understand the potential and if we hit all cylinders we will be in good shape.” Noel-Johnson was named the Best Defensive Player in the CCC and Velasquez was the offensive player of the year and led the Bulldogs in rushing with 780 yards and 10 touchdowns last season. Velasquez also tallied 270 receiving yards and caught three scores, amassing 1,050 yards of total offense in nine regular season games and started the final two games of the regular season at quarterback, engineering a consecutive Harvest Bowl victory over city rival Pitman. “I never had any players quite like these two, although we do have so many talented players, including our offensive line,” said Peterson. “These two guys are trying to play college ball so they are big leaders for us. They have taken over this team and we will be successful with great leaders.” The line returns four of five starters from last season including Nicolas Berry and wrestling standout Breck Jeffus. Brother and wrestler Mike Jeffus should also start as a sophomore on the line. “Mike was handling guys at Sections in wrestling as a freshman, he is a monster,” said Peterson. “Cool thing is we have our guys we can count on but we are adding to that, four or five six guys that are really good.” Also expect to see Dustin Grein and Mark Flores step in and provide the team with some flair. “Never had guys quite like this group, they are dedicated and die hard, it's in their DNA... I mean they bleed it,” said Peterson. “I am juiced, it's going to be a fun year. We set the bar high, we have a tough preseason schedule.”

he Hilmar Yellowjackets varsity football team had one of the program's more exciting years in 2015 when they battled their way into the Section Championship game and captured a 9-4 overall record through their highly competitive preseason schedule that included four playoff teams, two league champions and two section winners. That followed into the always-grinding Trans Valley League. There the 'Jackets faced turmoil early on, especially after starting off league at 0-1. They shook off that opening league loss to Ripon and went on to win four straight to tie the Redskins for the league title at 4-1 and won six straight heading into the SacJoaquin Section Division-VI Championship before falling at the hands of No. 2 Bradshaw Christian. It also marked the third time in five years that the 'Jackets made the Section title game. Look for the rich tradition of success on the football

field to continue this season for Hilmar but, again, this year won't be any easier. “Success for us, the goal is to make state playoffs," said Hilmar head coach Frank Marques. “Every year we go in trying to go undefeated so it's our goal, this group were undefeated as sophomores so their expectations is a state title and if we fall short we do but that is our goal, we talk about it all the time.” The team will have to rely heavily on a favorable defense which returns over eight of its starters from a year ago. There is no question that Hilmar's rush defense was one of the best in the TVL and all around just a season ago, although they gave up a couple plays, but many of the playmakers are back and better than ever. Linebacker and running back Cody Rentfro is the staple of the team, after tallying 120 total tackles for the year, and is the 'Jackets' heart along with defensive standouts Wyatt Amaral, Xavier Burke, Elias DeLeon, Bryan Walley, Kelby Peres and last year's top pass rusher for Hilmar, Joey Pereira. The offense loses a significant bunch who were extremely impactful in putting up points during critical games during 2015, including the best quarterback-receiver tandem in the TVL in Alex Chavez and Daniel Teixeira, and three of Hilmar's four starting linemen. Ethan Jones and Derek Rios are the only two linemen returning and wide receiver Klay Farris should be the No. 1 wideout as he proved

during his junior season that he is reliable and can snag any ball within sight. Chase Kindberg, who was mainly used as a receiver and defensive back last year, will take on the duties under center as the quarterback. Junior kicker Marcus Mouro is back after starting as a sophomore. Josh Jennings should carry the load after topping at 1,029 rushing yards on 115 carries last year as a junior and Rentfro might also carry the rock a bunch after he followed up second on the team with 811 yards. Both Rentfro and Jennings averaged over 8.9 yards per carry. Physicality isn't the team's concern, but more how they will respond under a much less capable offense who lost some of the TVL's best from a season ago. For a small school in a small town, it can be challenging to top what coach Marques and the D-VI 'Jackets are facing this fall against a playoff team in Beyer, the No. 1 team from last year's D-IV playoffs in Lathrop, a 10-2 Gustine team and also including last year's D-V champions in Sonora before closing out with Livingston. “I think you do that by keeping our kids off their feet. We practice 2 hours and 15 minutes a day, try to keep them fit and limit wearing them out,” Marques added. “We have had great runs, six section finals and seem to be okay, injuries happen and can't do anything about it but those are some things we try to be proactive about.”

he Eagles of Turlock Christian have been striving to achieve signs of success and last year was that, despite their 1-9 overall record and 0-5 in the CCAA. If a few pieces would have fallen in place, the Eagles of TC would have notched at least three league wins. Their closest league win was against a 10-3 Big Valley Christian team which the Eagles only lost to by four points. But the progression might either take a halt or continue as they welcome a new head coach in Mike Turpin. The team also has 6-foot-1, 235 pound Kyle Rodrigues at the line position that should help out Skinner and the rest of the offense. The Eagle also managed to compete in multiple 7-on-7’s and scrimmaged last years Section and State Champions, Stone Ridge Christian before the beginning of the season. “Believe it all, the kids have to,” said Turpin. “We have tons of sophomores that are good, cant wait for them to be juniors and seniors, they will give me everything they got. F

or the third consecutive season, the Delhi Hawks varsity football team finished with a 5-5 Southern Athletic League record under head coach Rod McCombs but failed to make the postseason. Now, in a year of growth and working towards building their own tradition, playoffs are the goal. The Hawks' best defensive linemen in the SAL over the last two seasons, Jesse Flores, is back for his senior season and will carry this team on his shoulders if he has to. Luckily, he will have the help of a number of returners and newcomers who seem to impress coach McCombs more and more as they days wear on. Scorpio Castorena will be starting at inside linebacker and is more than capable of providing the team with a fierce tackler who has a nose for being at the right place at the right time. “We have got a bunch of third-year varsity starters who will be seniors this year,” said McCombs. “We are thin up front, but we are linebacker rich.” Along with Castorena and Flores, the Hawks will also rely on the talents of senior Samuel Cortez. Safety and senior Fabian Garcia is also back, standing at 5-foot-11 he will be a key contributor as well as Alecxis Miranda on both sides of

the ball. Look for Damian Rivera and Alvin Prasad to get major snaps as well on both sides. Last year's junior varsity quarterback, Aiden Rocha, should take on the quarterback duties. “Rocha is looking real sharp,” said McCombs. “He has got a great accurate arm and strong and our offensive coordinator, Erik Martinez, should put some good combinations to put defenders in jeopardy.” Look for a highly competitive team for the Hawks which could make a splash in league if their standout players can not only stay healthy. “Beginning of summer we pulled all the kids into a team meeting and asked them what their specific team goal was and they want to go 10-0,” said McCombs. “It's a real tall order, but we have high expectations and hope to compete for a Southern League title.” Perfect execution is key to reaching those goals, says McCombs. “It's the work they have been doing over the summer, they really gelled as a team,” McCombs added. “We have had kids who have worked very hard and power ratings are up, our power has definitely gone up.”

he Coyotes will finally have some stability this year as second-year head coach Anthony Armas is back for another stint and the young coach is taking everything he learned from last year and hoping to continue the progression of the program and the players into what is looking like a wide open Southern Athletic League in 2016. The only challenge will be numbers this upcoming year as the Coyotes will have to rely on a select few. A total of 16 to be exact, but there are a few tough players who can play both sides. Justin Steeley, along with Chase Pritt and Dylan Mann should be the standout leaders of the group. “Our strength is that a high percentage of those players saw significant playing time last year and are getting to run a system two years in a row for the first time,” said Armas. “We have eight to nine guys returning who played both sides.” Armas will also have the likes of Steeley, who, from a small school like Denair, is getting heavily recruited by Division-I San Diego State among vari-

ous other Division-II schools. Steeley, at linebacker and running back, should be a strong player for the Coyotes, standing at 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds. He rushed for over 650 yards and scored a total of eight touchdowns last season. The three-year varsity starter also had two interceptions and two fumble recoveries on the defensive side. Joe Brasil will also be another player to watch for the Coyotes in the upcoming year. “We are hoping the familiarity they have developed with the system will help in our execution this upcoming season,” said Armas. “Our expectations for the new year is consistency. Consistency in our weight room attendance. Consistency in our effort, in practice. Consistency in our execution on the field. “The good thing was the number of players showing up for workouts is already increasing from last year,” Armas added. “We are making strides towards developing the program into a program that kids will be proud to be a part of.”
