2013-14 record: 19-10, 6-4 CCC Head Coach: Doug Cornfoot Outlook: Turlock High enters the 2014 season looking to improve on its second place Central California Conference finish from the previous season and get back into the playoffs after being eliminated in the second round. The Bulldogs return their top-scoring guards, Demsen McFaddin and Devan Bains, as well as big man Travis Cook. The senior trio has cemented themselves as Turlock’s leaders and will be the focal point of an offense that aims to score its points by committee. Turlock also has a new focus on defense as it will attempt to hold all of its opponents to 40 points or less through four periods. Ryan Downs and Habib Velasquez are also expected to contribute on the court as well as a handful of juniors up from the JV level. Turlock won its secondstraight Godinez title last year and looks to earn its fourth in the past six years with a win in this year’s tournament.

DAVIS HIGH SPARTANS 2013-14 record: 17-10, 10-2 MMC Head Coach: Dan Pacheco Outlook: Last year’s Modesto Metro Conference champions the Davis High Spartans return five seniors from last year’s league championship run. With the help of key returning players, Jacob Taylor and Jordan Davis, the Spartans seem destined for another great run this upcoming year despite losing three key players from last year’s
squad. Both Taylor and Davis should be the team leaders in every sense as they each score and play tough defense. The front court is young, consisting of three key juniors led by Talolo Limus-Jones, EJ Jackson and Tyler Wilson. All three are newcomers to the varsity, but are expected to get a lot of playing time said Pacheco. “The Frank Godinez tourney has always been a favorite tournament for us to attend, because of the great tradition that Mr. Frank
Godinez always bought to the event. I always remember his smile and positive attitude he always had greeting you. I believe this is about our 20th year attending this great tourney and we always look forward to tough competition and great friends,” said Pacheco.

BEYER HIGH PATRIOTS 2013-14 record: 16-12, 9-3 MMC Head Coach: Kyle Mckim Outlook: Beyer High is coming off a season where they placed second in the Modesto Metro Conference at 9-3 just behind Davis, however it was enough to clinch a postseason berth for the Patriots who were unfortunately booted in the first round. Beyer is really looking to build on what they accomplished last year said head coach
Kyle Mckim especially after making the playoffs for the first time since the 2004-05 season. First year head man Mckim has high expectations for this team who wishes to finish atop in league and make it deep in the playoffs. The team returns two veteran point guards in Jake Polack and George Dancer, both of whom who really control the pace of the game for the Patriots. Mckim said that having these two out on the court is like having some key

veteran and experienced players who have been around for years. The team is well balanced with a good blend of post players, shooters and guys that can penetrate the basket. The staple has always been toughness and great culture all around and Mckim hopes to keeps this pace on. This might be the deepest team that Beyer has had in years and wearing down their opponents is their bread and butter.

MCNAIR HIGH EAGLES 2013-14 record: 1-24, 0-10 TCAL Head Coach: Matthew Morelli Outlook: The McNair High Eagles come off a down year in 2013-14, but this season after getting a bit seasoned in nearly every position head coach Matthew Morelli knows that it should be all uphill from here. With—still—a young team, the up tempo style of play seems to be the strong focal point of this year’s team. The Eagles have a deeper squad
than they have ever had at least during Morelli’s tenure and every single player is passionate about the sport. Although the team is inexperienced at the varsity level and also a smaller team as opposed to their peers, they are a smart and fast squad. Led by four seniors, the team is very junior heavy with nine and the addition of one sophomore in Justin Williams. Morelli just hopes that the team improves and gets better each day.

LAGUNA CREEK CARDINALS 2013-14 record: 11-16, 2-8 DVC Head Coach: Mike Gill Outlook: Laguna Creek High has participated in the Godinez Tournament for a few years under the leadership of former head coach Paul Casey. Last year in his final season at the helm, Casey led the Cardinals of Laguna Creek back to the grand stage despite losing to the hosts and eventual winners in Turlock High. For the second consecutive season the Cardinals became the runner-ups after back-to-back standout performances in the tournament. Now with the new head coach Mike Gill, the Cardinals are back in the Godinez, which Gill says is a quality tournament to keep on the schedule for this upcoming year. PITMAN HIGH PRIDE
2013-14 record: 13-12, 2-8 CCC Head Coach: Harvey Marable Outlook: Pitman High struggled with youth last season as it finished fifth in the Central California Conference and eked out an overall record that was one game over .500. Things are looking different in 2014, however, as the Pride hit the court with veteran players like Branson Garcia, Cyle Williams and Ethan Stinson. Garcia and Williams, last year’s top two scorers with respective point totals of 395 and 315, will be joined by newcomers Dominick Von Waaden and Chris Hanham as they seek a turnaround season in the CCC. Though the pre-season and tournament schedules are typically used to build team chemistry, Pitman will also be using the time to heal early-season injuries that have unexpectedly hit the team. But with his offensive foundation intact, head coach Harvey Marable is confident that this season will be one of success—starting with the Godinez Tournament.

2013-14 record: 13-13 overall, 5-7 WAC Head coach: Julio Marquez Key returners: Joshneil Sandhu, Austin Stiles, Nick Burt, Puneet Sahi Key newcomers: Haaydn Martinez, Ismael Ontiveros, Ramon Coral, Brad Bussard Outlook: Ceres High graduated seven players—two starters—from last year’s team, which won the consolation title at the 37th Annual Frank Godinez Tournament. Senior guard Joshneil Sandhu, junior guard/ forward Austin Stiles and senior forward Nick Burt will lead the 201415 Bulldogs. Sandhu, Stiles and Burt ranked second, fourth and sixth, respectively, in scoring for Ceres High a season ago. Joshneil averaged 7.2 points per game and shot 30 percent (43 of 143) from 3-point range. Stiles, one of the school’s best all-round athletes, averaged 6.4 points per game. Austin caught 27 passes for 347 yards and two touchdowns while playing football for the first time this past fall. Burt averaged 4.9 points per game. Sophomore guard Haaydn Martinez, sophomore point guard Ismael Ontiveros, senior center Ramon Coral and senior guard Brad Bussard are new to the team. Martinez and Ontiveros helped lead the Bulldogs’ frosh basketball squad to a 20-5 overall record and runner-up finish in league play (10-2). Coral and Bussard last played hoops at the junior-varsity level (20-6, 10-2) in 2012-13. Brad, a quarterback, and Ramon, a lineman, took last season off to focus on football. Ceres High’s varsity basketball team placed fourth in the 2013-14 Western Athletic Conference standings (5-7).

RIPON HIGH INDIANS 2013-14 record: 8-20, 6-6 TVL Head Coach: Rodney Wright Outlook: This year is a new year for the Ripon High Indians. The squad returns only one starter from last season in Cole Stevens as a sophomore, which was the only player and starter from the squad last season. After placing fourth in the Trans Valley League last year at 6-6 and winning only eight games overall, head coach Rodney Wright knows the daunting task ahead will not be an easy one but they should definitely see an improved squad as opposed to last season. Cole, who stands at 6-foot-1 is the point guard and with the help of transfer Mario Roach from Tennessee the guard position will be the deepest of the squad. Aaron Paschini, who is only a sophomore will be a big asset as a young newcomer and Cody Haines should only help the squad, standing at 6-foot-3. Ripon could very good or struggle from the look of things as they transition a large number of players from the JV level (5). There are no real rexpectations for coach Wright but he is optimistic that there will be good days with growing pains. With youth there is a learn curve and he will see how fast they transition to the varsity level of play.

PAST TOURNAMENT MOST VALUABLE PLAYERS
‘M
r. Bulldog’ lives on through basketball tournament Former Turlock Journal sports editor and passionate Turlock High sports supporter, Frank Godinez, is the namesake of the Godinez Memorial Basketball Tournament. Godinez was referred to as ‘Mr. Bulldog’ during the 15 years he covered Turlock sports from 1969 until his death in 1984. Godinez was a 1970 graduate of Turlock High where he was a starting lineman for the Bulldog football team his senior year. He began his sports writing career at the Journal while still a student at Turlock High. Godinez quickly became a fixture on the sidelines of any local sporting event. The Journal sports pages won two California Newspaper Publishers Association Awards while under his direction. When not covering a sporting event for the paper, Godinez was passing along his love of baseball to dozens of young athletes as a Little League coach. In January of 1985, he was honored posthumously by the California Parka and Recreation Society for his outstanding volunteer service. The Godinez Memorial Basketball Tournament at Turlock High began shortly after his death. Although he spent his life on the sidelines reporting on the triumphs of others, Frank Godinez’s contribution to the Turlock sporting community has not been forgotten.
