REMEMBERING ‘MR. BULLDOG’ STAFF REPORTS Turlock Journal

It’s been 24 years since Frank Godinez passed away, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional sports reporting in the town of Turlock. Often referred to as “Mr. Bulldog” during his 15-year tenure with the Turlock Journal, Godinez was known for having his involvement with all levels of athletics, from Little League baseball to high school football, all the while focusing on the players and doing his best to make each athlete feel like a pro. “He and I were a pair,” said former Turlock Journal managing editor, Don Hansen. “Frank was not only involved in the community as a sports writer, but he was also a Little League coach. Frank lived sports; that and his friends and family.” Godinez was a 1970 graduate of Turlock High where he was a starting line-

man for the Bulldog football team his senior year. He began his sports writing career at the Journal while still a student at Turlock High. Godinez quickly became a fixture on the sidelines of any local sporting event. The Journal sports pages won two California Newspaper Publishers Association Awards while under his direction. Godinez became friends with many coaches. When not covering a sporting event for the paper, Godinez was passing along his love of baseball to dozens of young athletes as a Little League coach. In January of 1985, he was honored posthumously by the California Park and Recreation Society for his outstanding volunteer service. “Through his involvement as a sports writer, through his work with youth or his volunteer commitment to the leisure activities of our community, he helped make Turlock a better place to

live,” said then Turlock Recreation Director Abe Rojas. “There will never be another person who will exceed the commitment and dedication he had for the betterment of our community. He was a true friend in promoting leisure services of our town, county and state,” he added. But for many young, up-and-coming athletes in the area the name Frank Godinez doesn’t hold the same significance as it does for older generations. For many, particularly basketball players, they know Godinez as the namesake for the annual Frank Godinez Memorial Basketball Tournament, a three-day competition featuring some of the area’s top tier teams across multiple divisions. This year will mark the 41st anniversary of the tournament, a milestone that has spurred those who both knew Godinez personally and have watched his legacy cement itself in the community to look back and reminisce. Doug Cornfoot is one such person,

having lived in the area as an athlete from 1979 to 1982 as part of the California State University, Stanislaus men’s basketball team and as a coach for more than a decade as the leader of Turlock High’s boys basketball team. “I knew him for a short period of time, but the thing I remember vividly is that he was at everything,” Cornfoot said. “Living in the town of Turlock you were always curious to see what the athletic teams were doing and he was always the one out there covering it all.” According to Cornfoot and others who knew Godinez the man, the fact that his name now represents competitive cornerstone of local athletics is fitting. This year’s tournament will feature eight teams: Turlock High, Pitman High, Denair High, Merced High, Golden Valley High, East Union High and Davis High. The tournament will be held from Dec. 6-8 at Turlock High School.

TURLOCK HIGH BULLDOGS 2017-18 Record: 14-13 overall, 9-3 CCC Head Coach: Doug Cornfoot

Outlook: When you take a look at the 2018-2019 Turlock High boys basketball team, you have to take into account Cam Sherwood — one of the more premier perimeter shooters in the area. Sherwood, along with 6-foot-8, 300-pound Everett Johnson, were a big reason why the ‘Dogs finished 9-3 in the Central California Conference, placing second in league. They went 14-13 last season, and earned a berth in the SacJoaquin Section playoffs after going 10-4 in their final 14 games. The 2017 Godinez Tournament saw the Bulldogs coming in a close second to crosstown rivals Pitman. Turlock is seeking redemption this year for their home tournament. “I think they are more excited than last season,” said Turlock head coach Doug Cornfoot. “I just want us to compete and it doesn’t take skill, just heart. I think if we compete and hustle, skill wise we have what it takes to be competitive and put ourselves in every game. But in the end, it just depends how bad they want it.” Turlock is 2-1 after their first three games played and they know the Godinez tournament could provide the team with an opportunity to see local tough opponents. The team always has expectations to reach their peak, but so far it is pretty high said Cornfoot. “We want to just shoot threes sometimes but we have expectations and know how we want to run things…last year it took some time to buy into it,” said Cornfoot. “This year I just hope they buy into it sooner so that we don’t have that eight or nine game losing streak. We have a good core of returning varsity players, about seven of the 13.” The new Central California Athletic League should be a fun and evenly contest league, so the possibility of winning a title is very much within reach.

PITMAN HIGH SCHOOL PRIDE

2017-18 Record: 18-9 overall, 6-6 CCC Head Coach: Harvey Marable Outlook: Pitman High head coach Harvey Marable is pumped up about the season and competing in the Godinez Tournament. Heading into the tourney, Marable hopes it will help his squad to prepare for the newly developed Central California Athletic League. Pitman has taken the Godinez trophy two years about to the last three. However, the Pride graduated half a dozen players from last year, a team that included current pro basketball player Dom Von Waaden. “I loved last year because we had a lot of varsity players with experience who were returning, and Dom who played four years,” said Marable. “Compared to this year, we have three players with a bit of varsity of experience. But the other guys were major contributors when they were juniors so they know what to expect, and now the roles have changed.”

Josiah Frank, Dylan Anderson, Gunndeep Hayer and Navjit Bath are expected to take on bigger roles for the Pride, which went 18-9 last season. This included a 6-6 record in the Central California Conference —the last year competing in it. Despite their second-best start in program history last year that saw them kick off the year at 8-1, the Pride still failed to make the postseason and that is one of the goals heading into the new year. “This is basketball, so they will come out ready to win, but it is a different style now that we head into the new year,” said Marable. “I would like to be in the mix for the CCAL title, but it will be important to put it together from the start and for the entire season. “The kids wrote some goals down, and one was making the playoffs, another was communicating and get along, and to win a league title. Recognize, anticipate, relax and communicate: This is high on our list.” GODINEZ TAB

DENAIR HIGH SCHOOL COYOTES

2017-18 Record: 13-13 overall, 9-3 SAL Head Coach: RJ Henderson Outlook: Last year was one to remember for the Denair High varsity boys basketball team and the Coyotes are looking to not only repeat the success, but best it. To accomplish that, they will have to continue to progress. With nine victories and a playoff berth, coach RJ Henderson was happy with his team’s results last season, but was even more thrilled about the thought of returning his two first-team all-league selections in Drew Pritchard and Steffin Winston this year. But Henderson is telling his players to take it one game at a time. “We return the core, about seven of nine,” said Henderson. “It is apples and oranges with the success they had in the fall with football and still playing, it will be an open book, still trying to see where we are going to be.” Section and State football champions Pritchard and Winston will look to repeat their recent success on the basketball court. “Good players and good kids, just

great leaders,” said Henderson. Denair so far is 1-3 after their first four games played. Last season Denair kicked off the season losing four of five. They ended up going 4-10 in pre-league play before they finished strong in the Southern League. Denair closed out the year with a 9-3 league record, winning nine of the last 12 games. There was a stretch where Denair won eight of nine during last year’s playoff run. Denair reached the Division-V Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs but were immediately booted by Summerville in the opening round, 5532. “What we did together and started last year is over and there is now an open and clean canvas — a new chapter to write and we are trying to take that approach because it is a new team regardless,” said Henderson. “We tried to preach that it will be new and unique experience… “We know coming back we have talented returners and we wanted to put together a challenging schedule.” GODINEZ TAB

GOLDEN VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL COUGARS 2017-18 Record: 18-10 overall, 7-5 CCC Head Coach: Keith Hunter

Outlook: Golden Valley High has head coach Keith Hunter is thrilled about the upcoming season for the Cougars and the new Central California Conference. He is also pumped up about competing in the Godinez tournament once again. “I think it looks like a very good tournament, always great to see Harvey and Doug, they are great guys, lot of respect for them,” said Hunter. “So great to see them, I want to beat them as bad as they want to beat us, but it’s a great friendship.” GV finished 7-5 in the CCC a year ago, placing third while also earning a berth into the Sac-Joaquin Section playoffs. They ended up falling to Manteca, 68-65, in the first round, but they were happy with the 18-10 season that saw them compete game in and game out. It didn’t help that they closed out the year dropping four of their last five games. This is a new season, however, and they return a lot of players with plenty of experience

under their belts. “For a high school team, we are as deep as we have ever been,” said Hunter. “We have some depth of great athletes and I think we work hard. If we play some solid defense, shooting will come. We had a lot of football players this year so will take time to execute our offense, but we will refine it and continue to improve. The outlook is I like this team and as time goes on, we will continue to improve and be ready when league comes and that is what it’s all about.” There are only five juniors, while the other six players are seniors. Etrell Bowers and Isaiah Daniel are two of the most experienced seniors who will play big minutes and contribute largely, according to Hunter. “I have a great group of guys and our expectations are high as usual. We expect to compete for league and win some games for playoffs; expectations are the same every year,” Hunter added. “Our roster… we have some solid guys, it is just getting it together and getting them rolling.”

MERCED HIGH SCHOOL BEARS Outlook: Merced High alum and head coach Hector Nava has been leading the varsity boys basketball team since 2011 and heading into this season, he says the program is on the cusp of a sensational campaign. “Long journey to make it back to Merced, learned quite a bit,” said Nava. “I am glad I met coach Hunter at GV and learned all basketball from him, he does a great job out there at GV.” Nava and the Bears have been flirting with a winning season the last few years. Last year, Merced outscored its league opponents in the Central California Conference, 671-640. They went 5-7, placing fifth and missing out on the playoffs. Two of their league losses came in double overtime, while all seven of their losses in the CCC were decided by seven points or less, including four games decided by one possession. “The basketball gods were not looking out for us last year, lots of close games,” said Nava. “Never been in double overtime games before and made it to

two, and buzzer beater, and all that happened to us within 12 games. But we live and it is a learning experience and we have to learn and move on.” Nava’s optimism is evident as his team heads into the Godinez tournament, having lost two of their first three games. This is, however, the progress needed after a senior deep squad last year. “Now, this year, we worked hard with our lower level kids and started making them into men and this preseason is going to be key for us. I have a lot of juniors, this is varsity basketball now,” said Nava. “I’ve got three returning guys, and a power forward as well. It is a nice shake up, add Central Valley and Patterson and telling the guys we can make a nice playoff run and it should guide us to win, at least prepare for playoffs, we will be battle tested.” Nava said they are excited about joining the Godinez Tournament. “I wanted to be local and have good competition like those teams…I know it is a prestigious tourney,” said Nava. “Now they are not in our conference I wanted to get on board.”

FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL YELLOWJACKETS 2017-18 Record: 10-16 overall, 3-7 SJAA Head Coach: Donald Mack Outlook: It is a transition year for Franklin High of Stockton’s varsity boys basketball team and that is okay according to head coach Donald Mack, who is determined to change the culture. Mack takes over a squad that went 1-2 in last year’s Godinez Tournament and 10-16 for the season. “This year we are in transition, new athletic director, the whole thing, and we had a late start… they didn’t hire till October,” said Mack. “These guys missed the whole summer, so we are diving in and trying to get out in transition. We are working hard to get caught up and we have a little ways to go. We have guys coming from a different system and we’re getting down to basics and grass roots.” They went 3-7 in league play last season, but this year things are looking to change. One of the catalysts could very well be tournament play, including the upcoming Godinez. “I think we played at the Godinez when I was coaching the underclassmen,” said Mack. “We are going to be able to step into this tournament, I think, and fit right in there and maybe towards the end of the year we will peak. But (the tournament is a) great way to play different teams to get experience we didn’t get in the summer and playing different levels.” The Yellowjackets are off to a 1-0 start after beating Venture Academy in the season opener Nov. 30, in a 68-53 win. Of the 10 on the current roster, Kevon Churchill is one of the leaders and the team captain, while senior point guard Mateo Morales is the team’s staple. “I think he is going to be our catalyst,” said Mack of Morales. “We also have Churchill, who is pretty much leading the charge for us. It is sudden, but they know me since I was there a couple years ago when they were freshmen. They know my style and everything and they should be able to understand. I want them to know that … we can get there because of how hard we work and I try to keep them inspired.”

EAST UNION HIGH SCHOOL LANCERS 2017-18 Record: 4-23 overall, 0-14 VOL Head Coach: James Ward Outlook: East Union High has a new varsity boys basketball head coach in James Ward and he is bringing with him a successful history and the hopes of beginning a new tradition to a program that has struggled the past few years. After four games played, East Union is off to a 3-1 start to the year after they won four games all of last year. They went 4-23 last year and 0-14 in league play and coach Ward is looking to turn that around. “We didn’t win a game in league last year. We are a small team so it will be a challenge this year to find ways to be competitive,” said Ward. “What I preach is playing hard and tough and if we do that, we find a way to compete win or lose. It will be a challenge, but I enjoy a challenge. The culture has to change since they have done poorly.” Ward has seen the capabilities and knows that success starts with leading by example. “As long as we play tough, scrap and hustle, are not intimidated — so far we have done that since every team we played has been bigger and more physical as well. I am also getting the lower levels as well, and we need the culture change, you have to get players to play tough,” said Ward. East Union returns Christian Cuevas and Asiah Scott who are big contributors. “Christian started as a sophomore, but both are great, just predominantly a junior team, so we are pretty young,” said Ward. “We have good all-around players. Big or small schools, we play anybody, anywhere, no matter where. I would like to play the toughest competition no matter what. We play in the Valley Oak League, so it will help us a lot to get ready for league competing in the Godinez, never played in tournament, first time. I look forward to playing in it.”
