REMEMBERING ‘MR. BULLDOG’ STAFF REPORTS Turlock Journal
It’s been more than two decades since Frank Godinez passed away, leaving behind a legacy of exceptional sports reporting in the town of Turlock. Often referred to as “Mr. Bulldog” during his 15-year tenure with the Turlock Journal, Godinez was known for having his involvement with all levels of athletics, from Little League baseball to high school football, all the while focusing on the players and doing his best to make each athlete feel like a pro. “He and I were a pair,” said former Turlock Journal managing editor, Don Hansen. “Frank was not only involved in the community as a sports writer, but he was also a Little League coach. Frank lived sports; that and his friends and family.” Godinez was a 1970 graduate of Turlock High where he was a starting line-
man for the Bulldog football team his senior year. He began his sports writing career at the Journal while still a student at Turlock High. Godinez quickly became a fixture on the sidelines of any local sporting event. The Journal sports pages won two California Newspaper Publishers Association Awards while under his direction. Godinez became friends with many coaches. When not covering a sporting event for the paper, Godinez was passing along his love of baseball to dozens of young athletes as a Little League coach. In January of 1985, he was honored posthumously by the California Park and Recreation Society for his outstanding volunteer service. “Through his involvement as a sports writer, through his work with youth or his volunteer commitment to the leisure activities of our community, he helped make Turlock a better place to
live,” said then Turlock Recreation Director Abe Rojas. “There will never be another person who will exceed the commitment and dedication he had for the betterment of our community. He was a true friend in promoting leisure services of our town, county and state,” he added. But for many young, up-and-coming athletes in the area the name Frank Godinez doesn’t hold the same significance as it does for older generations. For many, particularly basketball players, they know Godinez as the namesake for the annual Frank Godinez Memorial Basketball Tournament, a three-day competition featuring some of the area’s top tier teams across multiple divisions. This year will mark the 41st anniversary of the tournament, a milestone that has spurred those who both knew Godinez personally and have watched his legacy cement itself in the community to look back and reminisce. Doug Cornfoot is one such person,

having lived in the area as an athlete from 1979 to 1982 as part of the California State University, Stanislaus men’s basketball team and as a coach for more than a decade as the leader of Turlock High’s boys basketball team. “I knew him for a short period of time, but the thing I remember vividly is that he was at everything,” Cornfoot said. “Living in the town of Turlock you were always curious to see what the athletic teams were doing and he was always the one out there covering it all.” According to Cornfoot and others who knew Godinez the man, the fact that his name now represents competitive cornerstone of local athletics is fitting. This year’s tournament will feature eight teams: Turlock High, Riverbank High, Beyer High, Golden Valley High, Merced High, Davis High, Franklin High and East Union High. The tournament will be held from Dec. 12-14 at Turlock High School.

TURLOCK HIGH SCHOOLBULLDOGS 2018-19 Record: 14-13 overall, 7-3 CCAL Head Coach: Doug Cornfoot Outlook: The second season in the Central California Athletic League is right around the corner for Turlock High, but first is preseason play. Turlock is fresh off a second-place finish in the newly created CCAL last season as they enter their home tournament. “We have four guys that are coming back from last year,” said THS head coach Doug Cornfoot. “A lot of the guys have been talking out there when they are out on the court, and the bench is more vocal during the game, instead of maybe sitting back and maybe not as involved. For the 14 we understand that it is one team, it has been a surprise so far, and everyone has been pulling for each other.” Turlock’s 7-3 CCAL posting a year ago earned them runners-up in their inaugural season in the CCAL, while they also earned a playoff berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-I playoffs. They went 14-13 overall, while sweeping their crosstown rivals in their two league meetings. The Bulldogs won three of the last five games heading into the new year and Coach Cornfoot is looking forward to this season. Cameron Walker is one of the few standouts from a year ago for the Bulldogs squad while the team boasts over eight players that stand over 6-feet tall. They have one sophomore up on varsity in Daniel Malagon. “We are going to rely on the younger guys since Cam Walker is just a junior as well,” said Cornfoot. “They will have to show and prove that they are ready to compete and they are not intimidated, but we will compete and see whatever happens will happen. I think we are ahead of where we have been at this time of the year in the past because we only have two football players. We are further along because we have not had to wait for the kids to come out so I hope it will help going into preseason, but we have a pretty tough preseason schedule. We added new teams to our tournament and it will be a good challenge for us.”

RIVERBANK HIGH SCHOOL BRUINS
2018-19 Record: 14-11 overall, 8-4 TVL Head Coach: Jeff Jennings Outlook: The Riverbank Bruins are a steady contender in league and always have a chance because they have a coach like Jeff Jennings, arguably one of the best in the area. The Bruins are off an 8-4 finish in the Trans Valley League last season, when they took third place in a stacked small school league that provides the entire section with some of the stiffest competition. The Bruins are fresh off a first-round loss to the D4 Sac-Joaquin Section champs, Sonora High, but are looking to build off that. Unfortunately, they must do so without their two leading scorers and all-league selection players. “We are a senior heavy team this year and will rely on our depth and quickness and pressure defense. We feel that we are
pretty balanced and will play 8-10 guys,” said Jennings. Returning starters are Bryce Martin, Ty Luu (3 year) and Jesus Flores. “We feel that we are a playoff caliber team but the TVL will be tough top to bottom this year. We’ve put a pretty challenging preseason schedule together including this tournament to help prepare us,” said Jennings about participating in the Godinez. “There is a lot of size in the TVL but we need to see really athletic teams and being the smallest school there will help us see that. I really like the teams that the Godinez offers. We will definitely have our work cut out for us but that is what we are looking for that way we are ready for league and hopefully playoffs. We used to be in the tournament in the early 2000s so we are excited to come back. Ron Peterson and Juan Alaniz coached at Riverbank and then later at Turlock.” GODINEZ TAB

BEYER HIGH SCHOOL PATRIOTS
2018-19 Record: 21-9 overall, 12-2 WAC Head Coach: Kyle McKim Outlook: Last year was another successful season for the Beyer High boys basketball team. To make things even more interesting, they defeated last year’s Godinez and CCC champs in Golden Valley in the first round of the D3 SacJoaquin Section playoffs enroute to their fifth straight 20-plus win season for head coach Kyle McKim and the Patriots. “Our team was very senior heavy with a ton of great leaders,” said McKim. Beyer also earned their sixth consecutive playoff berth, falling in the second round to No. 2 Wood. While there are very few returners from last season, McKim is not worried. “We only have three players re-
turning from last season’s varsity team. But we have a large number moving up to varsity this year from a 27-0 JV team last season,” said McKim. “The expectations are to play hard, play together, and be bought in at all times.” McKim knows that using the pre-league schedule, which includes numerous tournaments, the Godinez tournament included, will help his team get ready for the ultimate prize. “I’m very excited to be back in the Godinez tournament this year after a few years away. Coach Cornfoot always puts on a tremendous tournament with solid teams. We are looking forward to playing tough teams and growing as a group during the tournament,” McKim added. “We should be a very fun team to watch this season. Our pace of play will be extremely fast and exciting.” GODINEZ TAB

MERCED HIGH SCHOOL BEARS 2018-19 Record: 11-17 overall, 5-7 CCC Head Coach: Adrian Sanchez
Outlook: This year is a new season for the Merced High Bears and they bring in first-year head coach Adrian Sanchez, who is expecting the team to compete. “Things are obviously different when there is a new coach. So, expectations are simple: Play hard, be good teammates, and try their best,” said Sanchez. Boasting a roster of 14, including seven returners, the Bears know that in order to compete in the Central California Conference they will need all the help they can get from each and every player. The preseason will be huge, and the Godinez Tournament could assist them in what could be a lengthy season. In 28 games played last season, Merced won 11 of them while they won just five of 12 league contests. This earned them a fourthplace position in the CCC after Golden Valley placed first with a 12-0 record. The goal as they head into a new season is simple — to improve on a day-to-day basis. “Team goals are to improve from how they finished last year. League title and playoff appearance would be nice but it is one game at a time. That’s what we are striving for,” said Sanchez. The Bears also know that playing in the Godinez this year will prepare them for the regular season. “Playing in the Godinez will be good so we can see teams that aren’t in our area or league,” Sanchez added.

DAVIS HIGH SCHOOL SPARTANS
2018-19 Record: 3-23 overall, 1-13 WAC Head Coach: Brian Bergerson Outlook: Davis High head coach Brian Bergerson is happy with the progress his squad made last season. Heading the new year, the Spartans lose four key contributors and bring back eight. “We have eight returners… it is helpful because they know what I expect and makes things a little easier,” said Bergerson. “Little higher expectations I can say that in regards to having guys know my expectations, the effort and hardworking guys I have coming back and excited to see how they respond with new stuff I am throwing at them.” While the Spartans have athleticism on this year’s squad, they will have to deal without having size on their side. “One goal is we are undersized, getting a body on somebody to compete
on the boards that will be critical,” said Bergerson. Progress will be vital and Bergerson knows that a solid pre-league schedule will pay off in the end. Competing in the Godinez will offer the Spartans a chance to go up against teams that are league champions, league runners-ups and numerous playoff contenders. “In the past we have taken beatings and so it kind of shows our guys what kind of competition is out there in our area… and it helps because there are always high-quality teams there with great coaches, so we get to see high level of competition pretty much every game,” said Bergerson. Don’t count the Spartans out, however. “I am just excited about the chemistry we have going. Our guys do a great job communicating on and off the court and I never had that before so I am excited to see how that plays out during games.” GODINEZ TAB

FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL YELLOWJACKETS 2018-19 Record: 8-18 overall, 1-9 SJAA Head Coach: Demond Spradley Outlook: The Franklin High Yellowjackets of Stockton are coming off an entire overhaul of the program as they welcome in first-year head coach Demond Spradley. “Just getting to know the players, and had plenty of summer practice, but far as I know is that they progressed well from when I got here till now, I am excited and I think we will make noise this year,” said Spradley. Last year Franklin won eight games out of the 26 played for the year. Heading into this new year, the squad looks fresh and has a blend of newcomers and even a few sophomores. “We’ve got a mix of both seniors and juniors, and we have a couple sophomores on my squad, 13 total and we are balanced right now,” said Spradley. “I say this a lot, people will look at us and underestimate, but every time we go out it will be a fight, nobody should underestimate us. We have the skill and the best coaching staff under me and we are looking forward to going to our first tournament and moving on from there, and if not, we learn from it, and go to the drawing board.” Heading into the Godinez, Spradley knows that it is an opportunity for his squad to get a feel for different competition within the section. “A tournament like this will help for sure, whether we lose or win, will set the bar and see where we are at and what to work on. We will go hard and hopefully get better each and every game and day,” Spradley added.

EAST UNION HIGH SCHOOL LANCERS 2018-19 Record: 12-16 overall, 3-9 VOL Head Coach: James Ward Outlook: Heading into year No. 2, head coach James Ward has high expectations for his East Union squad. Last year, they were coming off a better year than expected after they played in the Godinez championship, but this year, the goals and expectations are much higher. The Lancers won 12 games overall and three in league after the previous season they just won four games total and no league games. This year, after four pre-league games played, they are off to a 3-1 start and look to be rolling into the Godinez tournament on a high note. “Last year we did better than expected, in the Godinez we played in the championship, lost but nobody expected that,” said Ward. “We barely missed the playoffs, performed better than expected. We took a bigger jump than baby steps, finished middle of league, Valley Oak League.” Four of the five starters from last year’s team are returning as seniors. The Lancers also welcome a couple of transfers and look to finish better this time around than they did last year at this point. Christian Cuevas is a big returner for the Crusaders after he was seventh in scoring in the Valley Oak League last season. He will lead a squad of 15 and coach Ward is thrilled. “We are expecting to make playoffs this year and not be a bubble team… we need to be committed and be tough players,” said Ward. “My motto is tough players play and if we are tougher than the kids across, we should be alright. “Last year was the first year in Godinez, I liked it, higher division levels, and really tested us, and helps us prepare for future tournaments and league and we appreciate competing in the Godinez tournament.”
