The hustle and bustle of the holidays can leave us all a bit frazzled sometimes, which is why it’s important to remember that what makes this time of year so special – time spent with our loved ones. The season brings with it lots of tasks to get done, but it also brings lots of opportunities for making memories that will be cherished through the years. This issue of Holidays in the 209 focuses on handy tips to help keep the stress out of holiday festivities, especially if you’re entertaining guests or planning the office holiday party. There are some truly talented craftspeople in the 209 and our One-of-a-Kind Christmas gifts story will give you some great ideas for some truly unique presents to put under the tree. Congregation Beth Shalom in Modesto is planning their annual Chanukah celebration and we’ve explored some lesser known traditions with the holiday. This issue of Holidays in the 209 highlights some of the merrymaking opportunities that the 209 has to offer, from the calendar of holiday events to the uplifting Christmas tree lighting hosted by Hospice of San Joaquin. We’ve also got some great holiday how-to stories, Christmas crafts, the perfect playlist and caring for fresh Christmas wreaths. To round out the year, we’ve got some great tips and recipes for hosting a New Year’s Day brunch. Thank you for your continued support and we hope you enjoy this issue of Holidays in the 209.

3 holiday crafts families can make together
Decorating for the holidays can be made even more special when decorations are handmade creations families can cherish for years to come. Holiday crafting is an enjoyable way to pass some time and create lasting holiday traditions and memories. The following are some crafts families can make together.
Personalized elf
Time to Paint the Town Fancy yourself a bit of an artist? Grab some plain wooden or ceramic ornaments and let your imagination run wild. From classic holiday scenes to funky abstract designs, these ornaments are like tiny canvases waiting for your creative touch.
Craft and Connect But here’s the real kicker: It’s not just about the ornaments. It’s about the fun you have while making them. Gather your family or friends around the crafting table, and you’ve got yourself a bonding session that’s better than any holiday movie marathon. In a world that’s always on the go, taking a break to craft your own Christmas ornaments is like hitting the pause button on the chaos. These decorations aren’t just objects; they’re pieces of your heart, your creativity and your holiday spirit. So, this festive season, why not give DIY ornaments a shot? Who knows, you might just create a new tradition that’s as heartwarming as a cup of cocoa by the fireplace.
Crafting Christmas.indd 17
For families who want to make their own personalized elf dolls, all it takes is a little computer knowledge, some clever photo work and a some sewing skills. Find a template for a rag doll sewing pattern or an illustration of an elf online. Superimpose an image of your child’s face on the template in a photo editing program. Print out the entire image onto iron-on fabric transfer paper. Iron it on to a light-colored piece of fabric from the craft store according to the product directions. Cut out the fabric with ironed-on decal, leaving about a one-inch margin to allow for sewing and eventual stuffing. Duplicate the shape of the doll onto another piece of fabric to make the back of the elf doll. Place the front elf image face down on the back piece of fabric and sew the edges together, leaving a small opening at the end. Using that opening, flip the elf right-side out and stuff with pillow fill material. Sew the small opening closed and enjoy a personalized elf doll for the holidays.
Holiday candle This craft is attractive and also smells good. Gather one bar of fragrant soap (like Irish spring); a small, white washcloth; red and green ribbon; a round of colorful mesh or tulle fabric measuring roughly 12 inches or enough to wrap your bar of soap; craft glue; a piece of yellow felt cut to look like a flame; and one or two sewing pins. Roll the washcloth into a cylinder shape to serve as the “wick” of the candle. Glue the edges together and wrap a piece of ribbon diagonally around the wick and adhere to secure even further. Glue the felt flame to the top of the wick. Place the soap in the center of the round piece of fabric. Attach the wick vertically to the soap using the pins. Then gather the tops of the mesh fabric around the base of the wick and use another piece of ribbon to tie into a bow and secure the fabric to the wick base. The soap and pins should now be concealed. Place the “candle” out of direct sunlight and away from heat, preferably on a little dish so the soap will not damage any furniture.
Growth indicator ornament Purchase a large glass or plastic Christmas tree ball. Select an acrylic paint in your color of choice and squirt some into a paper plate. Have a child dip his or her hand into the paint and then transfer the handprint to the ornament. Let dry and then attach a ribbon to hang on the tree. Through the years see how much children have grown from that little handprint.

Tips for less stress and more joy this season 3 ways to take the stress out of holiday hosting (StatePoint) The holiday season is one of the best times of the year! Between cooking, cleaning and keeping guests entertained, it can also be pretty demanding on your time and energy. In fact, during the holiday season, adults are five times more likely to say the level of stress in their life increases rather than decreases, according to the American Psychiatric Institute. This year, make life easier for yourself with these stress-reducing holiday entertaining tips:
Meal Prep Getting ahead on meal prep can mean more time spent with friends and family. If you’re tasked with serving a big holiday meal, prep the main dishes a day or two ahead of time so you can just pop them into the oven the day of your holiday feast. You can also brine and season turkey, prepare your glaze and score the ham, chop veggies and pre-mix salad dressings the night before. Festive beverages can be batched in advance so guests can easily serve themselves, helping you stay calm and collected during your party. And of course, don’t feel shy about asking friends and family to contribute a dish.
Have Dessert Ready Whether you’re throwing a holiday bash or expecting overnight guests, you’ll be the host with the most if you have delicious desserts on hand. Fortunately, serving baked goods made with care and quality ingredients is easier than you think! Stick with the classics like Entenmann’s – a 125-year-old brand with many delicious options to choose from. Powdered Pop’ettes will satisfy your guests’ sweet cravings, Pop’ems Glazed Donut Holes are great for bite-sized snacking, and Baker’s Delights Mini Crumb Cake has a rich and delicious homemade taste. Convenient choices such as these can keep you prepared for the night ahead should the doorbell surprise you with carolers or other visitors. They can also round out a buffet spread, help you end a multi-course feast on a sweet note or simplify breakfast for overnight guests. All you’ll need to do is put the coffee on!
Plan a Game Night If your overnight guests will be spending more than a night or two at your home, you can keep them happy and entertained with some activities that require very little planning but are a lot of fun. For example, you can organize a game night, which is a nice way to maximize your time together. Pick a few games that are well-suited for the size of the crowd and the age of the players. Remember, the best choices for a party are

games that inspire conversations, teamwork and creativity. Or plan a movie marathon, picking some holiday themed crowd favorites in advance. You can simplify feeding your guests during these low-key activities by putting out some finger foods like crudité, popcorn, pretzels and donut holes. With a few tips and strategies, you can ensure holiday entertaining goes as smoothly as possible.

Must-haves to achieve a holiday wonderland
Holiday wreath dos and don’ts No greenery is more recognized during the holiday season than Christmas trees. However, wreaths likely take a close second to towering evergreens when it comes to green holiday decor.
The end of the year marks a period of heightened festivity. Come the holiday season, homes and businesses are decorated and everyone seems to have an extra spring in their step.
It is important to treat wreaths with care in order to maximize their longevity and beauty. The following tips can help ensure wreaths remain fresh and festive throughout the month of December.
The sight of snowflakes, candy canes, evergreen wreaths, and Christmas trees can elicit nostalgia for happy holidays of the past, as well as excitement for what is yet to come. When it comes to decorating for the holidays, there are certain items that set the scene.
* Choose the right design. Select a wreath that is not too busy nor too boring. It is important to strike the right balance. A good wreath has a focal point, which may be a festive bow or another decorative piece. Keep in mind this is a wreath which should have lots of greenery on display, rather than flowers that characterize other seasonal wreaths. * Weigh your wreath. Take a moment to ask a salesman how heavy the wreath is when you purchase it. Knowing the weight of the wreath will help you identify the proper hanging mechanism, as hooks are generally characterized by the weight they can hold. A less than sturdy hook can increase the chances the wreath falls and ends up damaged.
* Christmas trees: Germany is credited with starting the modern Christmas tree tradition. It dates back to the 16th century when devout Christians brought trees into their homes and decorated them. German settlers brought Christmas tree traditions to America upon their arrival in Pennsylvania in the 19th century. * Mistletoe: Mistletoe is known as the kissing plant and it is customary for couples to kiss while standing beneath the plant, typically hung in doorways and arches. Mistletoe was once hung to drive off evil spirts and ensure fertility. Kissing under the mistletoe was first found associated with the Greek festival of Saturnalia and later with primitive marriage rites. * Lights: Lights are commonly seen during the holiday season. The custom of having holiday lights dates back to when Christmas trees were decorated with candles, which symbolized Christ being the light of the world. These traditions evolved from pagan rituals that would celebrate the return of light of the sun as the days grow longer after the winter solstice. * Yule log: Many families burn a yule log in the fireplace and watch it burn while listening to Christmas carols. The familiar custom of burning the log dates back to solstice celebrations and the tradition of bonfires. The Christmas tradition called for burning a portion of the log each evening until Twelfth Night, also known as the Epiphany, which takes place on January 6. * Poinsettias: Poinsettias are a tropical plant that originated in Mexico. Joel Roberts Poinsett was the first Ambassador from the United States to Mexico. He became enamored with the plants, and brought them back to his native South Carolina. An old Mexican legend suggests a poor girl had nothing to offer baby Jesus at Christmas Eve services, so she picked a handful of weeds and put them at the bottom of the nativity scene. These weeds burst into bright red flowers and became known as Flores de Noche Buena, or Flowers of the Holy Night. Holiday decorations borrow traditions from all over the world to help establish a festive wonderland.
* Determine your hanging method. Once you know the weight of the wreath, you can figure out how to secure it to a door or window without having to drill holes into any structures. Removable adhesive strips are one option, provided you attach something like cardboard or another material to the back of the wreath upon which the adhesive strips can be stuck. Otherwise, over-the-door wreath hangers are wise investments that can support large, heavy wreaths. * Consider the safety of pets. When decorating with plant material, it is important to know what is safe for pets in the household. According to the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, most holiday plants cause irritation of the mouth. Pine trees produce oils that can cause gastrointestinal issues. * Exercise caution with storm doors. If you hang a wreath between a glass storm door and your front door, the air around the wreath will heat up and cause the wreath to turn brown. * Choose a cool spot. In addition to avoiding heat that builds up between doors, you should select a cool spot out of the hot sun. Many pine trees, like balsam fir, react more favorably to cooler temperatures and will keep their vibrant green color and fragrance more readily. * Go artificial. If you want to hang a wreath indoors, opt for an artificial one. Prolonged warm temperatures inside may prematurely dry out a fresh wreath, ultimately turning it into a fire hazard. A few pointers can ensure wreaths remain a beautiful component of holiday decor throughout the season.

Last-minute holiday shopping tips Though devotees of early holiday shopping do not hesitate to point out how convenient it can be to get all their gifts long before the arrival of Chanukah and Christmas, scores of shoppers still wait until the last minute to begin checking names off their lists. It might be beneficial to shop early, but it’s easy to procrastinate. Last-minute holiday shopping might not be as enjoyable a custom as family dinners or office parties but scrambling to find the right gift in the waning days of the holiday season is a familiar situation for millions of shoppers. Shoppers who find themselves with some last-minute shopping on their to-do list can utilize these tips to make the frantic search for the right gift go smoothly.
* Work with store personnel. If a shopping list is lengthy but the time before the holiday arrives is dwindling, speak directly with store personnel, who may offer suggestions but can also help shoppers find what they need. In-person shoppers can speak with a store clerk immediately upon entering a store, while online shoppers can utilize chat functions on retailers’ websites for help finding something that’s in stock and deliverable before the big day. * Expect competition. Though online shopping would seemingly make last-minute shoppers relics of a bygone era, that was not really the case in 2022. A survey of more than 1,000 shoppers conducted by the retail industry publisher
Best Black Friday found that just about 16 percent of consumers estimated they would finish their shopping during the week of Christmas. Last-minute shoppers who want to avoid crowds should consider shopping during off-peak hours, such as on weekday mornings and afternoons when most people are working.
* Shop local. Last-minute shoppers may be flocking to malls and busy downtown shopping districts as they hurry to get gifts for friends and family members with different interests. Shopping at small, local businesses can help last-minute shoppers avoid such crowds. And with less on their shelves and smaller storage rooms, small business owners and their staff also tend to know their inventories inside and out. That can ensure a shopping trip is not spent wandering numerous aisles in search of the right gift. * Bag it, don’t wrap it. Shoppers who wait until the very last minute likely won’t have time to wrap all the gifts they pick up for loved ones. Gift bags conceal gifts just as well as wrapping paper, but it takes a fraction of the time to place a gift in a bag as it does to wrap it in paper. Quality gifts bags also are reusable, which can appeal to anyone looking to create less waste this holiday season.

* Don’t forget food. If it’s truly impossible to find something late in the season and a gift card feels too impersonal, give the gift of food. Adult recipients also can be gifted a bottle of wine or another spirit that can be enjoyed during a holiday meal. Shoppers skilled in the kitchen can whip up a homemade treat, while those without such talents can give a store-bought delicacy or even a subscription to a monthly food club or service. Last-minute shopping may look different than it used to, but scores of shoppers still wait to buy gifts for their loved ones. A handful of strategies can simplify last-minute shopping.

The perfect holiday party playlist Experienced party hosts understand that certain elements are essential to throwing a successful gettogether. Guests expect a few things when they arrive, with good food and drink topping the list. Music also figures into the magic formula for a wellreceived party. The late Aretha Franklin said, “Music does a lot of things for a lot of people. It’s transporting, for sure. It can take you right back, years back, to the very moment certain things happened in your life. It’s uplifting, it’s encouraging, it’s strengthening.” The power of music is so strong that party hosts know they must curate a playlist to complement the festivities. When hosting during the holiday season, hosts can rest easy in the knowledge that curating a playlist tends to be easier than at other times of the year. That’s due in large part to the prominent role some classic holiday tunes play come December. When curating a holiday party playlist, be sure to include these options.
«Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas» (1943): This is a song written for Judy Garland for the MGM musical «Meet Me in St. Louis.» Many artists have covered it, including Frank Sinatra and Sam Smith.
«Run Rudolph Run» (1958): Written by Chuck
Berry, and first performed by him, the song is a 12-bar blues. It›s similar in style to Berry›s popular «Johnny B. Goode.»
«It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year» (1963): Recorded by Andy Williams for his first Christmas album, this song is a celebration of holiday gatherings with friends and family.
· «What Christmas Means to Me» (1967): Stevie Wonder›s
recognizable tenor shines through on this song that shares all the traditions that help make Christmas merry and bright.
«Happy Christmas (War is Over)” (1971): John Lennon and
Yoko Ono released this song in 1971. Though it’s a protest song against the Vietnam War, it has since become a Christmas standard. · «Santa Claus is Coming to Town» (1975): Bruce Springsteen›s rocking version of this song is one no holiday playlist should be without.
«Do They Know It’s Christmas?» (1984): Written by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure, this song was recorded to raise money for famine relief in Ethiopia. It features Band Aid, a supergroup made up of popular Irish and British musical artists.
«All I Want for Christmas Is You» (1994): Love it or loathe it,
Mariah Carey›s song is one of the few modern Christmas songs to enter the esteemed Christmas music canon. It also helped pave the way for Carey to be forever tied to Christmas.
«It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” (2011): Several
artists have recorded this song, which was written in 1951. Jazz standards artist Michael Bublé made it his own in 2011. Curating a holiday party playlist can start with the above songs, and the list can then be customized with more tunes that help make the season magical.

4 unique office holiday party themes The holiday season is a festive time of year filled with plenty of opportunities to socialize with friends and family. Parties abound this time of year, and many people may find themselves hosting everything from intimate gatherings to large family dinners. As people will be attending many different events in the weeks to come, savvy hosts and hostesses may want to set their occasions apart in different ways. One option is to pick an entertaining party theme that guests can get excited about. A fun theme can provide a break from the standard traditions. Consider these four unique party themes when planning holiday parties.
1. Ornament exchange Decorating the home is commonplace this time of year. Who couldn’t use a new trinket for the mantle or an ornament to adorn the tree? Ask all guests to bring a gift-wrapped ornament to the party. Then place numbers in a bowl and have each guest draw a number; this is the order in which they will then select an ornament. After the first person makes their selection, subsequent guests can choose a new ornament from the pile or “steal” one from those already picked. The guest who picked first then has one last chance to
keep or steal at the end.
2. Tropical holiday The weather outside may be frightful, but a tropical island party can be utterly delightful. Give the event an island flair with fruity drinks, grilled kabobs, coconut desserts, and steel-drum music.
3. Grinchy party A party devoted to the Dr. Seuss character The Grinch can be a fun way to pass time together. While the holidays are supposed to be holly and jolly, a Grinch-themed party can put the emphasis on being a little bit more naughty than nice. And who doesn’t enjoy an ample serving of roast beast? Have guests come decked out in Grinch costumes or Grinch emblazoned t-shirts or other clothing.
4. Christmas karaoke Set up the karaoke machine or utilize one of the services available online, and make sure that guests are prepared to belt out their favorite holiday tunes - whether traditional carols or pop hits. A group of ladies can join together for The Waitresses’ “Christmas Wrapping” or guests can try their hands at hitting the high notes of Mariah Carey’s ubiquitous “All I Want for Christmas Is You.” Chances are serving some liquid courage will help guests loosen up and be more inclined to grab the microphone.

How to host a safe and enjoyable holiday office party Many people look forward to annual celebrations with coworkers during the holiday season with a customary office party. Here’s a few ideas to make it a festive and fuss-free event. Take the party outside
Weather varies across the country during the holiday season. But if concerns of congregating in tight spaces still prevail, especially with new variants of COVID-19 driving up infection rates, it may be safer to socialize outdoors. Heaters and fire pits can warm up spaces if the weather is chilly. Opt for individually plated or prepackaged foods
Prevent the spread of germs and safely address the myriad food allergies employees may have by serving individually packaged meals. Similarly, suggest that well-meaning employees refrain from annual Christmas cookie or fudge exchanges this year. Limit alcohol
Set parameters for how much alcohol is served, perhaps setting a drink limit for each employee. Alcohol can loosen

inhibitions, which may make people engage in risky behaviors that can make them vulnerable to the virus and other threats to their health. Provide transportation options
If the office party will include alcoholic beverages, develop a plan for getting attendees home safely afterwards. This may include hiring a ridesharing or cab company, or financing rides in a town car. In addition, ensure employees who do not feel comfortable leaving a venue alone at night can get home safely. Pair up employees who can carpool together. Allow employees to expense ride services. Carefully consider location
· Defer to company rules.
Companies may have guidelines in place that govern gifting. Check employee handbooks or company policies, which may dictate spending limits or even prohibit gift-giving. · Keep it holiday nonspecific.
Companies feature staff from various cultures, ethnicities and religious backgrounds. Therefore, resist any urge to affiliate the gift exchange with a specific holiday. Keep terms generalized, avoiding the use of «Secret Santa» or references to Christmas or Chanukah. Specify that gift wrap be generic as well. · Recognize that gift-giving flows downward. The general rule of
the workplace is that people at the same employment level can give gifts among themselves, but employees should not feel pressured to give gifts to their supervisors or bosses. Should one choose to do so, it could be misinterpreted and may cause rumblings across the company. If supervisors and managers want to gift their subordinates, then 209MAGAZINE.COM

that is fine so long as everyone is treated fairly. · Decide on a spending limit. Set a firm spending limit. A range of $15 to $20 may be affordable to most, and ensures a nice gift. However, if yours is a laid back environment and everyone is lighthearted, you can have gag gifts or set a silly amount for laughs, such as purchasing gifts only at the local dollar store. · Do not pressure participation. Engaging in a company-wide gift exchange should be completely voluntary. Only those who choose to participate will exchange with others. The easiest way to do this is to collect the gifts, then hand out grab bag numbers, enabling all participants to grab a random gift from the bag or table. Also, gifts should not be highly personal or anything that may be viewed as offensive. · Keep some spare gifts on hand. It’s happened before
when someone has become ill or simply forgotten to bring a gift to the exchange. Human resource managers or department heads may want to use an expense account to have a spare gift or two on hand so that no participant walks away emptyhanded. · Exchange at the party. If an office party is part of the plan, the gift exchange can take place there at a certain point in the festivities where it will be convenient for all involved. Office gift exchanges are common during the holiday season. A few guidelines can keep such exchanges festive and fun.

Think about how location may play into overall safety risk. If there are plenty of bars or clubs nearby, then employees may indulge before or after the company party and their employer could be held responsible for their actions. Employers also must be cognizant of the neighborhood in which the event is held. Does it have a high crime rate? Is it far from public transportation? Is it desolate after certain times? Let safety be a driving force when choosing a location for the party.
The average person will spend around eight hours at work each day, and do so roughly five days a week. Over time, relationships with coworkers may grow, and many people become friendly with their colleagues. In such settings, it can be customary to celebrate holidays with coworkers at company-sanctioned events. Personnel tasked with organizing the sharing of gifts across departments or the company can employ the following tips to make things run smoothly.

t’s not too late for those looking for unique, hand-crafted holiday gifts made by local artisans. Everything in Crinklaw Fine Art Gallery in Gustine is hand-painted by local artist Katherine Crinklaw. She has been a commission artist for 47 years and then five years ago, she decided that the time was right to open a retail studio space, which also allowed her to expand her creativity into ceramics. “I realized that I had the space to try something I’ve always wanted to try, which was having something for the tabletop, something that could be useful, yet still fine art. I’ve always adored ceramic art,” said Crinklaw. Crinklaw obtains blank ceramic pieces from The Pottery Place and More in Modesto and then paints them by hand in her Gustine studio. “I create all the designs and then freehand paint them like my paintings…which means there’s nothing involved but you and a pencil and paint brushes,” she said. “It’s really exciting to take that ceramic paint onto the raw disc and start making brushstrokes.” Crinklaw said that she did not follow the instructions from the pottery place, but instead uses ceramic paint with acrylic brushes. “It was just amazing to be able to paint these pieces and then when they’re fired the colors just spring to life and it’s so exciting,” she said. Her ceramics pieces are also her most popular gift items, as not everyone has space for a painting, but everyone uses plates and dishes in their kitchen and dining rooms. Those stopping by the Crinklaw Fine Art Gallery may even catch the artist at work at her desk in the same space as the gallery. She said all ceramic pieces come in secure boxes for transportation and are ready to be gifted.
Crinklaw will also be showcasing her work at local artisan markets. The next one will be the Pageo Holiday Market, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 25 at Pageo Lavender Farm, 11573 Golf Link Rd., Turlock. She will also host a Holiday Open House at her gallery with special guest jewelry designer Patty Novoa from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 2. Crinklaw Fine Art Gallery is located at 377 Fifth St., Gustine.
It’s really exciting to take that ceramic paint onto the raw disc and start making brushstrokes. For more information, visit crinklawfineart.com/ or call (209) 573-3523. Those seeking a more personal holiday gift should look no further than Master’s Touch Jewelers in the McHenry Village Shopping Center in Modesto. Mike Cruce is a second generation jeweler and for 40 years worked alongside his parents in a wholesale jewelry and diamond supply company. Master’s Touch was one of their best customers. When the original owners were ready to retire three years ago, Cruce jumped at the chance to buy the store.

“We’ve continued their tradition of high-quality custom jewelry,” he said, while adding that they also offer high-quality pieces at prices everyone can afford. Cruce said that with so many images on social media today, it’s not uncommon for someone to come into the store with a picture of a piece of jewelry they want created, but with maybe a different shaped stone or a different colored metal. “There’s so much available that they can see from pictured of jewelry online, but they want a local family to be making the jewelry. They may have seen the picture and it’s out of New York, but they don’t want to order it online,” said Cruce. Another popular custom order is to take heirloom jewelry and not only resize it, but also update the design. They can also take the stones out of one ring and create a whole new ring with a unique design. Cruce shared that one customer who had recently lost her husband asked them to take both of their wedding rings and create one ring that she could wear in memory of her spouse. If a custom jewelry piece is something you may want as a Christmas gift, Cruce recommends putting in the order as soon as possible as it takes weeks to create a piece and then go over any changes requested by the customer. Cruce is also continuing the family business tradition, with both his mother and his son working at the store, making Master’s Touch Jewelers now a third generation family business. Master’s Touch Jewelers is located at 1600 McHenry Ave. Suite F, Modesto. The store is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. hat better ways to celebrate the diversity, uniqueness and creativity of independent, local businesses than by supporting them during the busiest shopping season of the year? Plaid Friday was conceptualized in Oakland, Calif., several years ago in an effort to encourage holiday shoppers to slow down and shop locally at small businesses rather than partake in the frenzy of the traditional Black Friday rush at big box retailers. Similarly, Small Business Saturday® was founded by American Express in 2010 as a community-centric day to support local businesses. Small Business Saturday was the catalyst for the generalized Shop Small® movement, which encourages consumers to patronize small businesses. Local businesses are at the heart of their communities. In a 2015 survey by the Urban and Land Institute, researchers found that more than
half of respondents said they wanted a neighborhood where they wouldn’t need a car very often. More than 40 percent specifically noted the desirability of local shopping and entertaining as main features. A neighborhood with a Main Street or thriving local shopping hub can be a big draw. Consumers make these neighborhoods a reality. Every time they grab a coffee from a local café, purchase a piece of artwork from a neighborhood artist or dine at a family-run restaurant, shoppers are supporting local business owners and strengthening their communities. Here are some ways to make shopping small a priority this holiday season. Take inventory of Plaid Friday

and Small Business Saturday sales by keeping up on local social media. Build holiday shopping lists around the offerings at local businesses. Dine out at local restaurants or shop smaller food merchants. Visit a local tree farm. When decorating for the holidays, support the farm or local nursery that grows Christmas trees and makes their own wreaths and garlands. · Keep your money in your community at a local bank or credit union rather than a large national bank. Local banks may have special promotions to boost savings for holiday gifting. The holiday season is the perfect time to support small, local businesses.

BRINGING IN THE LIGHT by KRISTINA HACKER
hanukah may be the “simplest” holiday, according to Congregation Beth Shalom Rabbi Shalom Bochner, but the message is profound and one needed in times of darkness. “Chanukah is not the most important Jewish holiday, but it does have a very important distinction. It is the easiest Jewish holiday. How so? The essence of the holiday is simply to add more light. It’s that simple,” said Bochner. Chanukah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday that commemorates the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem at the time
C
of the Maccabean Revolt in the 2nd century. The Maccabees led a Jewish revolt against the Seleucid empire, which had claimed their territory, including the Holy Temple. The Jewish fighters were able to reclaim the temple, but didn’t have enough oil left to consecrate the holy site. The small jar of oil they found was only enough to light the Temple’s Menorah for one night, but lasted eight nights, allowing for new consecrated oil to be prepared. The holiday follows the ancient Hebrew lunar calendar and this year started at sundown Dec. 7 and the last night will be Dec. 15. Rabbi Bochner said there is a lesson to take from the shamash, the candle that lights the other candles on the menorah. “It lights the other candles and it doesn’t give up its own light. Light wants to spread. Light wants to bring other light…the ultimate thing that we dedicate ourselves to is knowing

night. According to 18Doors, a resource on the Jewish faith, it’s the same blessing traditionally said on the first night of all Jewish holidays and other special occasions.
Chanukah celebrants still participate in various customs each year, some of which are customized according to family preferences. While some traditions, such as the lighting of the Chanukah menorah, are familiar, others may not be as widely known especially to those outside of the faith. Here’s a look at a select few.
· Display or use of the shofar: A shofar is a type of instrument made from a ram›s horn. It is a symbol of the ram that Abraham offered as a sacrifice in place of his son Isaac, exemplifying heroic faith of the fathers of the Jewish people. The shofar also serves as a reminder of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem, and calls people to strive for Israel›s renewal and fellowship with God.
· Saying the Shehecheyanu blessing: Traditionally, there are two blessings that some people say each night while lighting the candles. The first is recited while holding the lit shamash, and the second is said while lighting the candles. Another blessing, known as the “Shehecheyanu,” is said the first

of the festivities. “Oh Chanukah Oh Chanukah” and “The Dreidl Song” are some of the most widely known songs, but some people also follow the custom of singing “Ma’oz Tzur (Rock of Ages)” around the menorah. The words were composed in the 13th century, and the song summarizes historical challenges faced by the Jewish people that were overcome
· Singing «Ma’oz Tzur”: Chanukah songs may not be as numerous or as widely sung as Christmas carols during the holiday season, but there are a select few that are part

that light is always going to be more powerful than darkness…So, be like a candle that wants to share its light; spread its light. Dedicate ourselves to ways of making this world full of light and justice and freedom and peace and unity and understanding and compassion,” he said. Congregation Beth Shalom will end Chanukah with two more events this weekend. For information on Congregation Beth Shalom’s Chanukah events, visit www.cbsmodesto.org.

· Use of oil in Chanukah feasts: It›s well known that latkes, or fried potato pancakes, are served around Chanukah. The reason is due to the oil used to fry them, which traditionally is olive oil. Fried foods call to mind a specific Chanukah miracle. After the Greeks destroyed the sanctuary and defiled what was thought to be all of the oil, one jug sealed with the imprint of the High Priest was found. That one jug managed to keep the Temple›s menorah lit for eight days, despite it being insufficient to handle this task. This was considered a miracle and celebrated in subsequent years. Chanukah is a relatively modern holiday with few traditions. However, the customs associated with this holiday are held dear.

HOSPICE OF SAN JOAQUIN TREE OF LIGHTS CELEBRATES
35 YEARS L
ight up a light, light up a life.” Hospice of San Joaquin is celebrating 35 years of bringing honor to loved ones through their Tree of Lights events throughout San Joaquin County, and beyond. Each light on the trees in their respective community, represents a loved one who has touched the lives of families and friends. The Tree of Lights program helps those left behind transition from grief and sorrow to remembrance and honoring. The lighting ceremonies have become a tradition for many families within our community over the past 35 years. Hospice of San Joaquin is grateful to our host sites, sponsors, community partners, and multitude of volunteers who support lighting ceremonies throughout the season. Dedicate a light to remember or honor a loved one by donating to Hospice of San Joaquin.
“Our trees are ‘Trees of Life’ honoring the gift of life.” says CEO Rebecca Burnett. “Each tree brings light to the dark night, as do the memories of our loved ones whose light will shine throughout the holiday season. We are thankful to PG&E who has, from
inception, provided employee volunteers and funded grants for tree set up and maintenance.” For 35 years, Hospice of San Joaquin has been shining brightly through their Tree of Lights event. Held every November and December throughout San Joaquin County, Tree of Lights is an opportunity for anyone in the community to recognize, pay tribute, and honor their loved ones. Tree of Lights began when Mark Rasmussen wanted to honor his late wife, Kathy, who had received services from Hospice of San Joaquin. Mark was a PGE employee who rallied fellow PGE volunteers to create the first Tree of Lights on the San Joaquin Delta College Campus in Stockton. The enormous pine tree at the corner of Pacific and Yokuts Avenue was, and still is the very first Tree of Lights. Fellow PG&E employee, Dave Ayers, created the Memory Boards that were displayed that first year. These memory boards show the names of the loved ones who have a light on the tree and are not at all locations throughout the county. Now retired from PG&E, Dave continues to volunteer for Tree of Lights. He has recruited his son and grandson to help with the project! As we were preparing for the 35th Anniversary Celebration, Dave and his family have been busy creating fresh, new donor boards. Not only do the Ayers make the boards, but they also install and take down at each of our eight locations, and then store them for the following year. We are grateful for the three

In addition, from the very beginning, PGE has provided employee volunteers who put the lights on our trees in Manteca, Ripon, Escalon, Rio Vista, Tracy, Lockeford and Lodi. Tree lighting Ceremonies are held in each community and have become a tradition for many families as they pay tribute to their loved ones. We hope you will “light a light” and join us at one of our ceremonies.

How to host
A New Year’s brunch
N
ew Year’s Day unofficially marks the end of the holiday season. After the turkey and trimmings of Thanksgiving and the gifts galore of Christmas and Chanukah, New Year’s presents one final chance to toast to fun and fortune. Chances are good that after an evening of ringing in the New Year and dancing until dawn, most people sleep in and catch up on a few extra hours sleep on January 1. Breakfast may come and go before tired revelers are ready to greet the day. That is what makes brunch so popular on January 1. Brunch is a meal eaten in the late morning or early afternoon - generally between the hours of 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. It consists of a blend of breakfast and lunch foods. Historical evidence suggests that brunch originated in the British upper classes in the late 19th century. Many upper-class people gave servants partial or full days off on Sundays. Staff would set out buffet spreads in the morning before leaving, enabling homeowners to graze among breakfast and lunch items. It may be challenging to compete with the excitement of New Year’s Eve, but a New Year’s Day brunch can be just as memorable, especially when
Breakfast may come and go before tired revelers are ready to greet the day. That is what makes brunch so popular on January 1st planning is a priority. · Send invitations early on. The holiday season is a busy time and people often commit to invitations early on. If you want to host certain guests at the brunch, send out those invitations several weeks in advance. · Keep it intimate. Individuals will be feeling the effects of a late night of partying and it›s likely you will be as well. Make things easier on yourself by keeping the guest list on the small

side. In turn, there will be less food required and perhaps less mess to clean up afterward. · Serve familiar foods. Brunch combines the best of breakfast and lunch. Guests will be expecting some of the standards, including omelets, French toast, bagels, deli meats, and salads. If you want to get creative, change up these recipes in subtle ways, such as serving French toast stick dippers with a warm maplecaramel dipping sauce or bite-sized omelets baked in small ramekins. · Keep the coffee flowing. Coffee, teas and hot chocolate are great at brunch. It›s easier to recover from New Year›s Eve overindulgence with a warm jolt of caffeine. Set up a nice beverage bar, and be sure to include other drinks that enable guests to rehydrate after a night of revelry. · Keep it simple. Soft music and nice conversation may be all that›s needed to entertain during a New Year›s brunch. Another low-key option is to queue up a light-hearted movie or play a relatively easy trivia game. New Year’s brunches can close the door on another successful holiday season with a relaxing afternoon spent in the company of family and friends.
