The art of UPCYCLING transforms interior design BY CARA HALLAM Turlock Journal

Ever since her childhood years, Turlock native Helen Johnson has been letting curiosity and determination lead her along the path of life. Added with her natural creative-flair, that path has led the young entrepreneur to find an expertise in the art of upcycling. “They don’t make furniture how they used to,” said Johnson, explaining why she prefers refurbished/upcycled furniture. “New quality, real wood furniture is extremely expensive and can be outside of many home decorating budgets. There’s so many gorgeous, high quality, solid wood furniture pieces being sold online, at yard sales, estate sales and thrift stores. The best thing is that these vintage, solid wood pieces are actually cheaper than most low end particle board furnishings at many department stores and will last you a lot longer…Furniture should be built to last, and be able to move from household to household.” Starting her business Red Dirt Revival Co. a few years ago, Johnson has found a passion in giving old furniture pieces a breath of new life. When she

sees a pair of worn-down chairs, or an aged hutch, Johnson doesn’t see “junk” that many others might toss prior to buying all-new furniture. Instead, the creative in Johnson sees a canvas with endless possibilities, as she upcycles, and repurposes old furniture pieces. After being born and raised in the Central Valley, Johnson left for college at Azusa Pacific University in Southern California to pursue a degree in Liberal Studies, in pursuit of a career in teaching. Upon graduating in 2011, she decided to take a break from school to work full time before pursuing her teaching credential. After sitting at a work desk for eight hours a day, five days a week for two years, Johnson found herself wanting to move more towards a creative job field to put her creative and artistic abilities to use. “A few months after my husband and I got married in 2013, I decided to take a leap of faith and start my own business from home,” said Johnson. “I loved refinishing furniture and home décor, so I decided to make a career out of it.” And thus Red Dirt Revival Co. was born. Now showcasing her refinished furniture and home décor

Using her talent and passion for transforming old furniture into contemporary pieces, Helen Johnson recently started her own business, Red Dirt Revival Co., to create unique furniture and home décor items that will stand the test of time.

on her own website, and selling locally in Southern California, Johnson continues taking old furniture pieces and giving them her own eclectic and contemporary flair. Using old furniture pieces such as Victorian night stands and vanity cabinets, dressers, sandpaper, wood stain and paint, Johnson creates many unique pieces that are never identical to another, often using a two color contrast method – a style that has become increasing popular. With affordable, unique pieces that are full of character now being highly sought after, the craft of transforming old furniture has swept over the nation in recent years, as thousands of DYI websites and blogs help individuals on a budget get into the art and craft of upcycling. “The best thing about most of the older furniture pieces I would find at the thrift store is that they were made of solid, real wood. These pieces stood the test of time and in my opinion were built much better than current, contemporary furniture made of particle board and a few screws, explained Johnson. “I’d have to say that dressers, credenzas and buffets are without a doubt my favorite pieces to refinish/ upcycle. I haven’t found one dresser that’s identical to another. I love using the two color contrast method on many of my dressers so that the drawers and frame of the dresser pop and have a bold contrast from one another. It makes the pieces funkier and adds so much character/style to any room. While some projects can be as simple as giving an old dresser a fresh new coat of paint, others such as Johnson have taken the craft to a whole new level by transforming old reclaimed wood or pallet boards into contemporary pieces of art or whole new pieces of furniture. On sites like Pinterest, upcyclers share

5

After

their creations with the rest of the world, often providing inspiration to the masses who are interested in saving money by refurbishing furniture or old wood. Pallets, for example, have been transformed into everything from patio chairs, to sandpits, to kids’ tree houses, planters for the garden, to even bed frames and accent walls. “I personally love a mixture of different styles, colors and textures. If you were to walk into my home you would see the eclectic modern style right away. My living room has both old and new furniture pieces with a mix of vibrant colors and patterns. I use a lot of white with a dark hardware, such as knobs and pulls, and color as contrast in my furniture pieces just because it gives furniture a beautiful, clean and crisp look, said Johnson. “I like to do a lot of color blocking in my furniture pieces as well. Lots of my furniture has two different types of color contrast which makes things fun and less predictable. I do some distressing in my furniture, but not much. Although the “Shabby Chic looks has been very popular in the last few years I like to go for a more contemporary look on my furniture. Although contemporary pieces are still a staple in interior design, reclaimed wood is continually becoming more and more popular, often having limitless uses. The beautiful deep, often slightly varying, colors of each piece of reclaimed lumber makes for a highly sought after level of “uniqueness to any given project, in addition to being a more economical choice. The sturdiness and fragrance of the wood are also reasons for its increased popularity, as it is now being used more extensively throughout the home for everything from beams to flooring purposes. Other popular unique transforma-

tions in the DYI-world include turning old doors or windows into large picture frames, wine barrels into dog beds, shutters into headboards, cribs into swinging porch chairs, and old crates or luggage into trendy shelves – proving that the possibilities are truly endless for those who think outside of the box. “My inspiration comes from a wide variety of places, explained Johnson, who says she once was inspired by a co-workers outfit. “My inspiration comes at the most random times, sometimes. I also find inspiration in traditional places such as HGTV magazines. My grandmother has started a habit of sending me her HGTV Magazine every month when she’s done flipping through it. That magazine has amazing color schemes and patterns to draw inspiration from. I do look at Pinterest for furniture inspiration once in a while but I try to limit my time on that website just because I want my work to be more authentic and not so predictable. Whether you’re recovering a dining chair, painting and stenciling an old table, creating a distressed or antique look with

paint or wood stains, or crafting your own wall art, the trend and art of upcycling and refurbishing is chock-full of projects for all skill levels. “For those who are a ‘do it yourself learner’ like me, I would recommend researching online if you want to get into the craft of refinishing or upcycling furniture. There’s an overwhelming amount of information on refinishing furniture online through personal blogs, Pinterest and Youtube tutorials, recommended Johnson, who started learning the basics through similar resources before experimenting with different products and materials to develop her own style of refinishing furniture. “For those who prefer hands on learning and don’t like the ‘trial and error’ methods, I would suggest going to a local store that refinishes furniture and ask if they offer personal classes. Many people who refinish furniture love what they do and are happy to share techniques and strategies from one artist to another. To see more of Helen Johnson’s upcycled pieces, visit www.reddirtrevivalco.com.

Repaint, Redecorate, Remodel: Jaureguy’s Paint and Decorating makes clients’ vision a reality BY ELIZABETH ARAKELIAN Turlock Journal

A

home remodel starts with an idea. A conversation. A vision. A home is sacred ground for many people, a place to relax and feel good without the pressure of the outside world. For locals looking to achieve peace of mind by remodeling their home or rooms within it, there is one store that often comes to mind: Jaureguy’s Paint and Decorating.

“We have so many resources in house to help the customer from every aspect. You’re not shuffled from person to person.” More than paint and decor, Jaureguy’s offers local home owners the ability to have their vision realized. Interior design is more than new pillows and paint as it can require a complete overhaul from the floorboards to the light fixtures— something that Jaureguy’s fully understands. Located in Turlock for 25 years, Jaureguy’s prides itself on punctuality and precision while offering clients full access to the people who are bringing their ideas to life.

“I’d say we are your one stop shop,” said Trudy Perrien, architectural and industrial coatings representative. “We have so many resources in house to help the customer from every aspect. You’re not shuffled from person to person.” Vision and budget are first discussed with clients choosing to remodel their home as they are the largest determining factors of the project. Once settled, big ticket items are the first to be implemented such as countertops or cabinets, while flooring and appliances are installed last. With the aim of being in and out in three to four weeks, which can be longer based on the size of the project, quality and quickness are at the core of Jaureguy’s mission. This is made easier by their emphasis on advanced technology, such as a computer programs to draw up clients a digital mock up of what their remodel will look like. “It is so important to visualize with the client. Depending on if we are working with existing structures or changing floor plans, we may direct you to an architect but a lot we can do conceptually on the computer. John Jaureguy is really innovative and changes with the times,” said Perrien. A family affair, Jaureguy’s Paint and Decorating began as a paint store in the 1990s and has since expanded with Sharon Jaureguy’s design expertise and her son Eric Jergenson bringing the construction component. With a team of specialists that work to make clients’ visions a reality, Jaureguy’s Paint and Decorating prides themselves on a clean and concise end product from a family that cares. “There are a lot of components to a remodel, but everyone here is very articulate in their role. I think that’s what sets us apart,” said Perrien.

Gardening through the drought id you know that you can still have a garden even in this year’s drought? You might be surprised how little water plants can survive on here in the Central Valley. You may have seen statistics stating that anywhere from 30 to 50 percent or more residential water use is “wasted” in the landscape. That is not always the case. In this article I will highlight some points to ensure you are watering efficiently as well as a few plant selections you may consider.

D

1. Monitor, service and possibly update your irrigation system Do you know when or how long your irrigation systems run? Irrigation systems on timers are wonderful tools to have when maintaining a landscape but, if they are not checked or the timer is adjusted according to the weather and season, you are probably wasting A LOT of water! Start by running your system then walk along the sprinklers, drip heads, soaker hoses, etc. Are there any sprinklers or drippers that are plugged or facing

You might be surprised how little water plants can survive on here in the Central Valley. the wrong way? Are some sprinkler heads or pipes leaking water? These should be fixed so that you are only putting water next to the plants, where it needs to be. This will also reduce weeds too! Check your timer. Is it working properly? How often and how long is it running per cycle? This

is where having different “zones” or lines running separately is really important. For instance, lawns and bedding plants will need water up to 3 times per week even in the hottest part of the summer but should be running 15-25 minutes each cycle depending on the type of sprinkler head and soil you have. Established shrubs will need longer waterings but not as frequently as lawns. Trees need even longer waterings but you should not need to water an established tree any more often than once a week, if that. Drip systems are the most efficient yet most commonly misunderstood irrigation system. Drip systems should be running long enough to get enough water on the plants but will not need to run as often as lawns. For instance if your drip heads put out 1 gallon of water per hour and most shrubs start at needing 3-5 gallons of water at each watering, you will need to run the system 3-5 hours. This may not sound like you are reducing water use but you are. You will just be putting all the water down deep where the roots are and should be instead of on top of the soil where it can evaporate or run off. Deep

Wednesday, April 23, 2014 rooted plants will withstand drier conditions because the soil just 1 foot below stays much moister much longer than the surface. Does that make sense? As for containers, almost none of this applies as containers will need frequent watering here in our climate. For more information drop by The Greenery to pick up our FREE WaterWise Guides or ask one of our knowledgeable employees for recommendations on your situation. Don’t have time to figure out your system? We offer Irrigation System audits and repairs as well as a timer reset service.

2. Mulch This is the easiest thing to do! Applying a mulch, preferably a natural mulch, will keep the soil cooler, more moist AND prevent weeds! Best choices for mulches are bark, shredded cedar, compost and more. If you choose a loose material like bark you can lay down weed barrier (never plastic!) before applying the mulch to be sure to cover the soil well. When applying mulches they need to be deep enough to do their job which is 3 to 4 inches. Natural mulches also need to be reapplied at least once per year to main-

tain the thickness. It is common to use gravel or river rock a mulch but this is not recommended unless it is for a specific purpose like a dry creek or pathway. Rocky materials radiate heat during the day and continue to radiate it at night making hot landscapes and the soil even hotter. Plastic also makes the soil hot whic h is hard on plants and it repels water when we really need any water to soak into the soil.

3. Replace thirsty plants or lawn This might be a good time to consider replacing plants that drink too much water or reduce your lawn. If you are considering this be sure to check out our California Friendly section at The Greenery. Here are just a couple of our favorites: Blackfoot Daisy – a small bushy perennial blooms almost all year long with white daisy like flowers. Needs extremely little maintenance and it loves hot dry spots. Grows 12 inches tall and 18 inches wide. Trident Sage – a Salvia that is almost evergreen. Blooms in spring and summer with whorls of blue flowers loved by butterflies and hummingbirds. Another heat lover that requires infrequent watering once established. Grows 3 feet tall and up to 3 feet wide.

Outdoor-Friendly Materials Have you ever wondered how some products are suitable for the outdoors while others can only be kept inside? Various processes and materials give outdoor furniture and decor durability and weather-resistant appeal.

Synthetic Fibers Ever think about all the abuse from the elements outdoor pillows, seat cushions and umbrellas suffer? Between the sun, rain and everything in-between, fabrics made for outdoor use are designed to withstand the elements, keeping your newly designed patio fresh for all the parties to come. Synthetic fibers used in these fabrics are designed to bead water, resist stains and maintain their color. With this in mind, you can lengthen the lifespan of such materials by covering them when not in use and avoiding prolonged exposure to rain or sun.

FAMILY FEATURES

T

he arrival of summer, along with its sunny skies and beautiful weather, beckons homeowners to create a space to entertain guests and enjoy the great outdoors. Design an outdoor living room that merges style and function, and incorporates elements of indoor comfort. Whether entertaining for two or 10, the warmer weather provides an abundance of opportunities to lounge in peaceful, open-air surroundings. New offerings in decor and design breathe indoor inspiration into your outdoor spaces, creating a beautiful extension of your home for all to enjoy. “It’s easier than ever to bring the comfort and style of your favorite indoor spaces into your porch, patio and other outdoor areas,” said Aimee Beatty, inhouse stylist with Pier 1 Imports. “From comfy throw pillows to trendy rugs, colorful artwork and cheery curtains, new outdoor products boast durability and so much style that your patio will be the neighborhood’s go-to summer hot spot.” Beatty shares some of her stylish secrets to make your outdoor space an elegant living space worth sharing.

Arrange away Treat your outdoor area as you would your living room. If space is limited, use sectionals to create seating in whatever arrangement fits best. If there is more room, add an investment piece, such as the Echo Beach Dining Table from Pier 1 Imports. This high-quality piece is made from handcrafted, all-weather synthetic rattan and offers plenty of space to arrange chairs just as you would in your dining room. Finish the look by layering your favorite accessories, such as handcrafted trays, detailed lanterns and a colorful floral arrangement to create a cheerful centerpiece that makes your guests feel welcome.

Embrace the bold Some might be afraid to create a statement outside because — it’s outside. But an outdoor living space lends itself to adventures with color and pattern, providing the opportunity to be bold and to go beyond your comfort zone. When shopping for the outdoors, remember — anything goes.

Make it uniquely yours Mix and match with color and patterns, and personalize your space with accents such as outdoor artwork, planters, umbrellas and more. A smart combination of accessories really transforms an outdoor space from simple to fabulous.

Be bright, all night The sun may still be shining when the guests arrive, but you’ll need something to light up the night and keep the party going all evening long. Create a delightful, welcoming atmosphere with a variety of outdoor lighting options, such as string lights, paper lanterns or floating LED candles placed around the patio. Fashion an elegant glow with lanterns in various sizes, such as the Scroll Trim Lanterns from Pier 1 Imports.

Serve in style

Tie it all together

Al fresco entertaining always focuses on food, drinks and friends. A self-service food station or bar enhances the casual tone, freeing guests to grab refreshments whenever they please. This also allows you, the host, to focus on the fun at hand. Look for serving and drink carts that maximize space, such as the Rania Serving Cart from Pier 1 Imports, which has three levels so there’s plenty of room to stash an ice bucket, drink dispenser, snacks, lawn games and more.

To let you in on a little secret — outdoor rugs tie everything together and really bring a space to life. Simply layer a rug, such as Pier 1 Imports’ chic Wavy Geo Rug, with a beautiful seating collection, colorful cushions and pillows, and you’ve got an outdoor area that makes everyone comfortable and happy.

So let the warmth of the season bring many memorable moments to your life and stylish elements into your outdoor spaces. For more great decorating ideas, visit www.pier1.com.

Outdoor drinkware and dinnerware made of acrylic and melamine provide much of the same great style as their glass counterparts without the breakability. A nice set of acrylic drinkware and melamine dinnerware, such as Summer Quench Turquoise Goblets and Trellis Dinnerware, both from Pier 1 Imports, will keep your outdoor soiree safe and fun throughout the evening.

Synthetic Rattan and Wicker Wicker may be the traditional material for outdoor furniture, but this new generation of synthetic wickers and rattans is not your grandmother’s porch furniture. All-weather chairs, tables and more are woven of synthetic rattan or wicker over durable, rust-resistant frames, making them durable and easy to clean. This approach offers the flexibility to incorporate a woven look into furniture of all styles — from traditional to global, modern to whimsical — without sacrificing durability and longevity.

Designer tips to create inspired dream spaces with color (BPT) - Ready to transform your home this year? The key to creating your dream interior space could be as simple as updating with color. Seven-in-10 homeowners plan a houserelated project in the next six months, according to the Sherwin-Williams National Home Design and Color Survey. Of those homeowners planning house projects, painting tops the list with 42 percent wanting to liven up their space with color, followed by landscaping (39 percent) and redecorating (30 percent). Adding color with paint makes sense to internationally celebrated interior designer Jeff Andrews, who has decorated the homes of celebrities from Ryan Seacrest, to Michael C. Hall to the Kardashian family. “Paint can incorporate distinctive touches that will liven any living space. Everyone has the potential to live in his or

her dream space, and a touch of color can easily make it a reality,” Andrews says. Andrews offers the following tips on how to create the ultimate dream space: * Upgrade living areas with creative color choices: Changing the color of your walls can transform a room from ordinary to extraordinary. * Highlight accent pieces with vivid color to bring a room alive: A distinctive color adds a layer of visual elegance to any room. Painting an accent wall, trim, crown moldings or a ceiling in a color that complements the walls can give a room a customized look. * Channel your inner designer: From stripes to geometric designs, infuse vibrant energy to a room with an on-trend painted pattern. * Create curb appeal with a bold use of color: To help your home make its best first impression, make over the exterior

of your home with a bold color. Among homeowners surveyed, almost two-thirds (64 percent) are confident handling outdoor painting projects. Consider coordinating your palettes from the inside out by painting your front door a few shades darker than the entryway. * Transform the ordinary: A fresh coat of paint can elevate a simple piece of

furniture and provide a distinctive look. According to the survey, nearly two-inthree homeowners (64 percent) want to add more color into their home. Pick a favorite desk or nightstand and use color to create a signature focal point in a room. For more tips and color inspiration, visit sherwin-williams.com/color.

14 tips to protect your home and family from earthquakes The type of property damage caused by the 5.1 magnitude earthquake that hit Southern California last month is the type that you can prepare for. According to the nonprofit Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH), by taking the following steps as demonstrated in the video “Look up, Look Around, Look Down (https:// www.youtube.com/watch?v=MGqfvhtbmOQ&list=PL R7GhNEQT6T_lJUKX-UpSQPMloBmxKMKQ) you can protect your home and family from earthquakes. Look Up 1.Support ceiling fans and light pendants with the use of bracing wire secured to a screw eye embedded at least an inch into the ceiling joist. 2.Brace masonry chimneys back to the roof joists or reinforce roof sheathing to protect the home from falling masonry. Look Around 3.Anchor the tops of bookcases, file cabinets and entertainment centers to one or more studs with flexible fasteners to prevent tipping. 4.Secure loose shelving by screwing into the cabinet or with museum putty placed at each corner bracket. 5.Secure china, collectibles, trophies and other shelf items with museum putty. 6.Install a lip or blocking device to prevent books or

other articles from falling off shelves. 7.Secure televisions, computers and stereos with buckles and safety straps that also allow easy removal and relocation. 8.Install latches on cabinet doors to prevent them from opening and spilling out their contents. 9.Hang mirrors, pictures and plants using closed hooks to prevent items from falling. 10.Cover windows with approved shatter-resistant safety film to protect against broken glass. Look Down 11.Ensure appliances have flexible gas or electrical connections. 12.Strap the top and bottom of a water heater using heavy-gauge metal strapping secured to wall studs. 13.Locate your gas shutoff valve and ensure you know how to turn off the gas supply to your home with the use of a suitable wrench. 14.Relocate flammable liquids to a garage or outside storage location. For more home and family safety tips visit www.flash.org or www.protect-your-home.org. — Technical information derived from FEMA document E-74 Reducing the Risks of Nonstructural Earthquake Damage.

Solve everyday setbacks

with five simple ‘life hacks’...

and possibly get rich doing so Amp up your shower power All too often showerheads can become clogged with mineral deposits. No need to call a plumber, simply unscrew it and soak it in a bowl of vinegar overnight and scrub with a grout brush in the morning. Double your storage space If you’ve discovered that your closets are a bit too small to store your coats and winter clothing, it’s not time for a renovation. Instead, try snapping the tabs off soda cans and putting one over the top of each hanger. The dangling tabs provide slots from which you can hang additional hangers to double the amount of clothing you can store. Tend to your tile If you notice a tile is loose, broken or missing on your kitchen backsplash or your bathroom floor and you don’t feel like wasting money on a bag of cement, there’s a tiny, mighty hero that can save the day. Just reach in your drawer full

of handy must-haves and grab a tube of Krazy Glue. FOUR STEPS FOR ATTACKING

GARAGE

ORGANIZATION

O

rganizing the garage may be one of the most feared tasks in household history. According to a recent Gladiator GarageWorks survey, nearly three out of four households can only park one car in their two-car garage, illustrating the need for a serious garage intervention. The importance of having a well-organized garage isn’t only for improved functionality — it also helps add overall value to a home. More than 80 percent of real estate brokers or agents recently surveyed said that a cluttered, unorganized garage can have a negative impact on a potential home buyer’s first impression. Since the garage is often used as the “front door” to homes, having an untidy garage can be very unwelcoming. There are a few steps that can help homeowners prepare for the ultimate battle against clutter and reclaim their space in the garage: 1. Clean and Prep Clutter is one of the biggest issues with garage organization. The only way to know what is in the garage is to remove all of the items inside and start with a clean slate. As you remove items from the garage, be realistic about what you do and do not use and move them into categories: * Keep items you use regularly. * Donate or sell items that are still in good shape but aren’t being used regularly. * Toss items that are broken and that you don’t need. 2. Have a Game Plan First, measure the garage so you can make an accurate plan for storage solutions and factor in large items, such as lawn mowers and sporting equipment. Next, decide how to

group similar items and what your storage needs are. For example, do you prefer to hang items on hooks, store in baskets or be able to hide items in cabinets? Start exploring your options with design tools, such as the one at www. gladiatorgw.com, to finalize your plans. 3. Build Your Storage System Use the walls in your garage to get gear off the floor and maximize storage space by choosing storage solutions that are durable and long lasting. Stackable plastic storage bins or shelving units can sometimes reduce clutter, but they aren’t always built to handle extreme temperatures in the garage. They also provide limited design flexibility and access to items when you need them. “Consider a modular storage system for the walls - they get everything off the floor and allow you to customize so you can reclaim your space,” said Karl Champley, DIY expert and master builder. “These garage systems are convenient and easy to install giving you the ultimate wall storage solution for baskets, shelves, hooks and various other accessories. These systems are the perfect way to achieve the dream garage.” 4. Add Final Touches Once you have stored large items in your garage, it’s time to add some final touches to maximize efficiency and make your workspace functional. * Keep a trashcan nearby your work area so it stays free of garbage and debris. * Hang tools near your workbench so you can easily put them back in their proper place. * Utilize smaller bins and storage containers for screws, nails and other small items so they don’t clutter your space.
