KIDZ DAY 2018

Making a difference at the Red Shield BY LT. QUINTON MARKHAM

Ricardo “Ricky” Reynoso is interested in making a difference. After graduating from Modesto High School in 2017, he realized that he is compelled to give back to the Red Shield Community Center which has helped in his development over the past several years. Ricky, who is now 18 years old, moved with his family to Modesto from Oakland in 2013. His father, Victor, does construction work in the Bay Area, and his mother, Ana Rosa, is a homemaker. When they moved to this community, Ricky was looking for a place to get involved and make friends. “I was the new kid in the neighborhood. I wanted to find a place to hang out, play basketball and meet new people.” He was invited by a friend to visit the Red Shield where basketball was the main attraction for the then-High School freshman. But Ricky soon realized that there was more to the Red Shield than just the pick-up basketball games. He soon became a member of the teen fellowship group, and after learning that The Salvation Army was a religious organization, offering spiritual programming, he became a church member. Ricky mentions “I felt accepted,” as a part of the recreational and fellowship programs, as well as the spiritual programs. He began to recognize that The Salvation Army offers a holistic ministry, feeding physical, mental, emotional and spiritual needs. A turning point in Ricky’s development and spiritual walk occurred near the beginning of his sophomore year. He was invited to attend a teen camp session at The Salvation Army’s Camp Redwood Glen in the Santa Cruz Mountains. This was a life-changing event in his life. He realized that the camp “is a place that benefits at-risk kids. Lives are changed for the better.” Ricky applied for a summer job at the camp in 2016, and was hired as a maintenance worker. A position as a cabin leader followed in 2017. He was given the responsibility of being a camp counselor for about eight kids every week, guiding them through an exciting week’s worth of summer camp activities. This summer he will return to be a crew chief, even more responsibility. Ricky became involved in another significant program in his development in 2015—The Salvation Army’s Bible Bowl program. The objectives of the program are to excite young people with the Word of God and its

relevance to their daily lives, to plant the Word in the hearts and minds of young people, to help young people to develop Bible study habits that will continue with them throughout their lives, and to encourage fellowship with other Christians. When Ricky first checked out the program, he thought that it was “very intimidating to memorize scripture. I’ve always been interested in sports, but not a study program. Why even try?” But he quickly realized that there was value in studying the Bible and becoming part of a team. “It actually was not as intimidating as I thought!” He is now an assistant coach on the Red Shield team, becoming a leader and encouraging new kids. When he decided to become more involved in leadership, he stated that he wanted to get in on “the excitement and the opportunities to help the center that helped me out.” Ricky excelled in high school. In 2017, he was a recipient of a Golden State Seal Merit Diploma which recognizes public school graduates who have demonstrated their mastery of the high school curriculum in at least six subject areas. He is a California Scholarship Federation member, and is currently on a two-year scholarship at

Modesto Junior College, studying to become an elementary school teacher. He is looking forward to becoming a positive influence on children, recognizing that he has benefitted from the influences in his life, including the staff and volunteers at the Red Shield. He added, “The Red Shield does a great job of ministering to youth.” He is now focused on pursuing his education and giving back. When asked about the benefits of the opportunities and programs at the Red Shield, Ricky mentioned, “The Red Shield gives you a place to go after school. It helps teens and kids avoid getting into trouble. It’s more than just a place to hang out. The people there support and benefit you on a mental, emotional and spiritual level. The Red Shield is a great place to connect with people and fellowship with others.”

KIDZ DAY 2018

More than a game Maria Arellano has witnessed firsthand the impact Salvation Army Red Shield Center has had on at-risk youth growing up in south Modesto. “If we didn’t have programs like baseball and softball, kids would choose to do others things that are not positive,” said Arellano, a longtime office staff member at Red Shield. “We have a high rate of gangs and theft in our neighborhoods. Our programs help kids say no to peer pressure.” All four of Arellano’s kids have played or are playing for the Red Shield’s baseball and softball programs. Maria’s two oldest children, Lorenzo (20) and Pinky (20), both graduated from high school and are students at Fresno State. Lorenzo currently volunteers as a coach for the center’s tee-ball and 14-and-under baseball teams. Pinky helps out at the snack bar when time permits. “Having them in a structured sport kept them from participating in other activities in the neighborhood,” Maria said. “They’ve actually seen how Red Shield can save a person’s life. One of my son’s closest friends got shot and killed on Crows Landing Road. He chose to hang out in the neighborhood.” Angelica and Ari, Maria’s twin daughters, are members of her 12-and-under softball team this season.

Maria also coaches the Red Shield’s 14-and-under squad. “Being able to give back and teach the kids is amazing,” she said. “I started out as a volunteer. I’ve been working for them for 18 years. It doesn’t feel like a job. It’s a ministry. I feel blessed to be a part of something so special. When I’m off or on vacation, I always come here. It’s part of my life. They’ve become part of my family.” Red Shield fields a total of 10 teams that play in the Stanislaus County recreational league, including five baseball (14-and-under, 12-and-under, 10-and-under, 8-and-under and 6-and-under) and five softball (14s, 12s, 10s, 8s and 6s). Cost is $80 per player. The 2018 campaign got underway on April 2 and will end on May 31. Teams play twice a week, including once at home and on the road. “The kids have a fun time, make friends and learn how to play,” Arellano said. Located at 1649 Las Vegas Street, the Red Shield Center has been a refuge for thousands of youth since the 1970s. The center offers a variety of athletic programs for school-aged kids. “The Red Shield has a purpose in this neighborhood,” Arellano said. “It saves lives.”

Helping youth succeed BY ANGELINA MARTIN

When the Salvation Army Red Shield Center first began its homework assistance program in 2005, the inaugural group of seven children who first received help learned the dedication and responsibility that it takes to become a good student, which now, 13 years later, has helped a majority of those students go on to attend college. The success of the homework assistance program is evident in the numbers. What started out as a small group of students has attracted more than 30 local youth who can get help with any subject, including reading, math and science. The program instills good habits in those who participate, who can play at one of the center’s many facilities only once they’ve completed their homework for the day. “When you make something consistent, you see the long-term goals come to life,” Red Shield Business Manager Maria Arellano said. “It teaches them that they have responsibilities, and there are certain things they have to do in life and finish in order to go to the next level.” The homework assistance program works primarily with students who are learning English, Arellano said, and has seen countless success stories walk out its doors. Students have gone from being unable to read to reading four or five books in one afternoon, and poor grades are often improved after just weeks in the program. The homework assistance program has grown so much over the years that just one classroom became too small of a space. Now, students learn in several classrooms, which also includes a computer lab. Access to technology for students is important since many don’t have computers at home but are required to know how

to use one while at school, Arellano said. “It helps the kids learn familiarity with a mouse and keyboard,” she said. Red Shield Center Director Alvin Lewis added that though it’s not an easy task, the homework assistance program helps many students change their attitudes about homework over time. “It’s an ongoing process and we try to make homework normalized,” he said. “We tell them, ‘Go do your homework and then you can go play.’ The most important thing is consistency, because once it becomes normal then it’s no big deal.” Arellano has no doubt that the homework assistance program has helped many students go on to chase their dreams. “The ones that have gone to college, it’s because they had this place where every day, they came and did their homework... they learned that they had to get it done, and that’s helped them be the successful young people that they are today,” she said. The center’s after-school homework assistance program is available from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. August through June, only on days when school is in session. It is free for members and includes a healthy snack for students.

Splash and sweat at Red Shield While the pool is the center’s most expensive feature by far, Center Director Alvin Lewis says that the cost is worth it. “It saves lives,” he said. A teen who frequents the pool knows all too well the importance of a safe swimming spot, tragically losing her brother to the depths of a nearby canal when he got in to cool off one summer day. By pro-

viding an area to swim that has lifeguards and also provides swim lessons, both Lewis and the center’s Business Manager Maria Arellano believe the pool may be the Red Shield’s most important contribution to the surrounding community. “The pool is really important because it keeps kids out of the canals and saves lives,” Arellano said. “It’s needed in this

Both the pool and gymnasium at The Salvation Army Red Shield Center serve as an integral part of the facility, helping local youth form lasting friendships while staying active. With summer quickly approaching, children are already taking to the cool water of the center’s pool. Since its renova-

tion in 2016, the pool has helped provide a safe place for swimmers to beat the heat. The pool underwent a complete makeover – something that was much needed for a facility built nearly 50 years ago. Updates included new plaster, coping, tiles, skimmer and lights, a completely new plumbing system, a new pool deck, a new filter pump and new deck fencing.

letics. In an area where opportunities are limited for young people, the gym offers a healthy alternative for youth. “The kids are in there 24/7,” said Lewis said. “It’s a place for them to gather.” The gym also received a makeover of its own recently, but in 2011, which included a new playing surface and paint, and also features a new fitness room stocked with first-class cardio and weight training equipment like incline treadmills, ellipticals, recumbent bikes and a variety of weight machines. The fitness room also offers Zumba and circuit training classes, and more are in the works. The gym recently expanded its programming hours to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays for ages 16 and older, offering recreational activities at the gym like the fitness room and daily “pick-up” basketball games. Other activities hosted by the gym include indoor soccer and kickball as part of the gym’s after school program, and biannual boxing events, hosted in May and October. Gym hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and Tuesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

community especially because people are so afraid of the water because they don’t now how to swim, but when they come here and see lifeguards, they just feel safe.” The pool opened in mid-April and has since been full every day after school, Lewis said. The $235,000 remodel has allowed the center to provide open swim times, swim lessons and water aerobics, and the newly-installed “vortex” slide provides another fun way for kids to have safe summer fun. “After so many years of that thing just laying dormant, it’s nice to see it used every day,” Lewis said. “If you show up on a summer day, it’s hard to find a spot in the pool.” While safety is one aspect of the pool that is beneficial to the community, Arellano added that seeing children make new friends that they wouldn’t have made otherwise is another rewarding moment daily. “It really is a place that breaks down the neighborhood barriers. You can see friendships develop,” she said. In the same ways that the Red Shield Center’s pool helps keep kids from swimming in canals, the gymnasium helps kids stay busy and out of trouble through ath-

Have your next party at the Red Shield BY ANGELINA MARTIN

Members at The Salvation Army Red Shield Center are able to take advantage of the many facilities that the organization has to offer, and local community members can also benefit by renting the spaces for their own personal use. “We feel that this facility is in the right place because this community really needs it, but it’s also open for everybody in Modesto,” Red Shield Center Director Alvin Lewis said. “We really want to open the doors to the outside and let everyone see what we’re doing here.” The Red Shield Center originally began renting out spaces as a way to raise money several years ago, and now books one to two rentals per month for community members looking to host birthday parties, baby showers, swim parties, weddings and other exciting events. “We can’t afford to bring in new programs or do new things because of our budget issues, but what we can do is make the facility available for other people,” Lewis said. “It’s not going to change the world for us, but it’s a win-win because then people can also come in and utilize the facility, which is what we’re all about.” With facilities like the center’s pool, gym,

multipurpose room, chapel and more, rentals tend to pick up traction in the summer, said Lewis, with four to five per month. He added that those wishing to book a facility for an event should call the center at least a week ahead of time, if not sooner. “We have a lot of summer dates blacked out already, so the sooner they let us know, the more options they’ll have to rent,” Lewis said. Pricing for rentals is cheaper than most surrounding banquet halls or community centers, he added, and facilities like the gym and pool are available to rent by those who give private lessons, like boxing, karate or swimming, to name a few. “They can come in and rent our facility for much cheaper, and an ongoing basis,” Lewis said. Hours for renting are flexible – wedding receptions held at the center have been known to go until one or two in the morning, Lewis said. “The main thing is to have people here in a safe, wholesome and protected environment where they can feel comfortable,” he said. “We’re as flexible as possible.” Those interested in renting a facility at the Red Shield Center can schedule a tour by calling the organization at 209-538-7111.
