the virtual learning assistance program, parents said they saw immediate improvements.” The Red Shield also was able to give teens in the area a safe place outdoors to connect with friends. “It was important that we keep in mind their emotional state of being,” Laubach said. Now, with Stanislaus County re-opening, the Red Shield Community Center is bringing back those well-loved programs like baseball, softball, aquatics, boxing, worship services, troop programs, and family activities. “It feels great to have these programs coming back for the community,” Laubach said.

For decades the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Community Center in Modesto has been a place that the community can turn to when help is needed. It might be providing sport outlets for children or homework help after school or spiritual guidance for anyone. Whatever the need, the organization is there to offer help. When the COVID-19 pandemic reached Stanislaus County last year and a statewide lockdown was enacted, the Red Shield couldn’t reach out to the community in their normal fashion, so they pivoted and found new avenues to help. “We had to close down at first, just like everyone else,” said Salvation Army Major Magaly Laubach. “But we knew there was a big need out there so we started looking at ways we could help.” Those ways would prove to be numerous. From March 2020 to the end of February 2021, the Salvation Army Modesto provided a total of 77,601 shelter beds to people in need; 26,806 grocery orders; 116,991 hot meals served; and $64,682 in utility assistance. A total of 103,672 people were helped over that time. The staff at the Red Shield Community Center was doing their part to help the Salvation Army’s mission aiding the community by helping in a variety of ways, including food distribution. When the school year rolled around, the Red Shield saw that some students were struggling with online learning and came up with the virtual learning assistance program. “For some of the children the challenge was getting into the flow of the online format,” Laubach said. “When they started

KIDZ DAY 2021 | VIRTUAL LEARNING
Red Shield extends a helping hand with virtual learning assistance to those in need BY JOAQUIN GALVAN
Every day, students, teachers, and support staff across the country, are participating in a virtual learning environment as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. It has pressured educational institutions to create and supply educational technology platforms as schools closed in 2020. In many schools laptops, smartphones, and internet have replaced physical books. Unfortunately, school closures have caused the most disadvantaged children to lose out on the opportunity to keep learning. The Salvation Army's Red Shield has taken on the challenge to assist disadvantage children with their education. On October 5, 2020, the Red Shield began a virtual learning assistance program serving nearly fifty students in grades K-12 from Modesto, Ceres, Keyes, and Turlock. The students served are identified by need, such as language barriers, from low income families, and those at-risk
academically. “Some families need assistance because they can’t afford Wi-Fi,” said Glafira Rodriguez, Program Manager. “Some parents may be at work, don’t speak English and so they are not able to understand what the teacher is teaching.” When the virtual learning assistanance program began in October it served an average of 40 to 42 children who needed some normalcy, structure, and assistance to be successful with online learning. However, as schools began to re-open, a hybrid distace learning program was implemented, with some students returning to school twice a week, while others continued with 100 percent distance learning. “Here at the Red Shield our staff has been 100 percent dedicated to helping the children be successful in such a difficult time,” said Red Shield Center Director Maria Arellano. “The doors open at 7:30 a.m. Monday to Friday welcoming kids from K-12th grades. We offer them help with classwork, refocusing tools, free

The students are given assistance with class work, IT assistance; as well as breakfast, lunch and snacks. The students have access to a beautiful building that has free Wi-Fi, AC/Heat and an environment that is friendly, welcoming and loving. “Our biggest focus is on our VLA program giving it 100 percent of our attention,” said Arellano. “We also offer character building programs when we are not in purple tier like Scouting Troops, boxing, baseball, Teen Night and soon our aquatics program.” Not only does the VLA program focus on academic skills, they also have multiple breaks that allows students to use blocks, puzzles, board games, do outdoor activities and go to the fitness center. For many kids, it is something they look forward to during the week. For example, one child frequently shared how happy he was to be attending the program, and would express his desire to be at the center even at the end of the day.
“It’s rewarding finding out that these kids actually really like coming here,” said After School Program Coordinator Berenice Ortega. “Just the fact that they are happy to be here. It motivates me. I’m just really happy that they are being helped.” In the junior high and high school class, most students tend to work independently. However, they also participate in algebra tutoring with junior high teachers. “These students are pretty tech savvy,” said Rodriguez. “So they understand where they need to go, what they need to do, and how to participate in online classes.” However, the initial phase of the program was challenging for staff and students alike. Kindergartners struggled with the technology. Some students in primary grades were nine weeks behind and had not completed a single assignment. Following the first four weeks of the virtual learning program, and with the assistance of the staff, many students were able to make significant strides academically. “Many of these kids were struggling, and were failing when they first came," Computer Center Aide Stephanie Thomp-
son said. "Now many of them have taken their grades up 1-2 grades since they have been in the program.” As schools have begun to reopen, the class size numbers at the Red Shield have been reduced. However, there are still a handful of students that parents are more comfortable leaving at the Red Shield. Since October there has not been any COVID-19 related exposure to the students. Staff sanitize every hour on the hour to keep everyone healthy. Staff enforce safety measures like wearing a mask, sanitizing hands, hourly sanitation and socially distancing students. The program success can be attributed
5
in part to the relationships built between the staff, teachers, and principals who work together to assist the students. “The kids are doing great,” said Arellano. “They have online help from teachers and in person help from staff. Reports cards and progress reports show the success of the students.” There is no doubt making a difference in the community has been rewarding for those involved. “It makes me feel good knowing that I’m helping these kids and giving them the assistance that they need,” said Thompson.

KIDZ DAY 2021 | BASEBALL & SOFTBALL
Teams ready to play ball at Red Shield BY DALE BUTLER
The Salvation Army Red Shield Center has been a refuge for thousands of at-risk youth since the 1970s and offers a variety of athletic programs for school-aged kids, including baseball and softball. “Fifty years later and we’re still providing the same service,” said Red Shield Center Director Maria Arellano. “They built this facility to save lives and get kids off the streets by offering them a safe environment.” Baseball and softball will be played this spring, after having to take a hiatus last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Everybody is excited,” said Arellano, longtime volunteer coordinator for the baseball and softball programs. Red Shield sponsors a total of eight teams that play in the Stanislaus County recreational league, including four baseball (12-and-under, 10s, 8s and T-ball) and four softball (12s, 10s, 8s and T-ball).
“We did a survey with parents,” Arellano said. “More than half need this program. It’s really important. It’s not just a sport. The coaches and parents grew up in this program. “It’s one of the most popular programs,” Arellano said. “The coaches are always giving the kids positive reinforcement to build up their selfesteem. They learn sportsmanship. They learn respect.” The 2021 campaign got underway on April 17 and ends on May 22. “In a normal season, kids get 12 games,” Arellano said. “This miniseason, they’ll get four games. The kids will practice twice a week.” Coronavirus safety measures will be followed. “We’ll make sure the kids are wearing masks, social distancing and using hand sanitizer,” Arellano said. “Normally, we carry 15 kids per roster,” she added. “This year, we’ll probably do 12 at the most.”

Boxing builds physical strength, self-confidence BY DALE BUTLER
The boxing program at the Salvation Army’s Red Shield may have been KO’ed last year, but it is ready to return this year with the ring opening in May. Children, teens and young adults who are enrolled in this program are taught physical, mental and spiritual endurance and strength. The experienced coaches are passionate about training young people in the “sweet science” at all levels and abilities, and providing a safe, structured and supervised athletic experience. Juan Barrera, 48, runs Red Shield’s boxing program and this will mark his 14th season coaching. Like many of the kids at the Red Shield, Barrera started learning how to box at a young age. “My dad was a fighter and started showing me boxing moves when I was 4-years-old, but I didn’t start [organized] boxing until I was 15,” said
Barrera. He was drawn to the challenging nature of the sport and to the camaraderie of training with other young boxers. Barrera hung up the gloves at age 20 but couldn’t stay away from the sport for too long. He felt a burning desire to be a mentor and leader to the kids in south Modesto. “I grew up in the neighborhood at the Red Shield,” he said. “It’s given me structure. The kids are depending on me to show up. I have to set an example, too. It keeps me grounded.” The benefits of boxing go far beyond the physical, said Barrera. “It’s not just about boxing,” Barrera said. “It builds their self-esteem and confidence. It’s good for stress. It gives them discipline.” “It’s easy to stay home and play video games and watch TV,” he added. “These kids choose to come to the gym and work out. We want to see them become champions in life.”

KIDZ DAY 2021 | FITNESS CENTER
Exercise, fun a priority at Red Shield's gym and fitness center BY ANGELINA MARTIN
The fitness room and the gymnasium at The Salvation Army Red Shield Center has provided community members and students alike with the opportunity to focus on their fitness, and teamwork and have some fun in a welcoming atmosphere. The fitness center has first-class cardio and weight training equipment, like incline treadmills, ellipticals, recumbent bikes and a variety of cable machines. After school, the center’s fitness room is open to kids 16 and older, or those younger than 16 can enter with an adult. A lot of kids utilize the weight room just to get exercise in, Red Shield Center Director Maria Arellano said, or they join programs, like boxing, that take place in the fitness room. “Many of teenagers come in after school who like to work out…especially the junior high and high school kids — they’re really into working out and looking good,” she said. “And, the other kids can’t get into that room unless they’re in a program, so it entices them to be a part of that so they can utilize it, too.” Before students arrive in the afternoon, adult community members also utilize the fitness room, which offers Zumba and bootcamp classes as well. Individuals are able to purchase fitness class passes via the Red Shield website, and attend courses led by instructors. “It gives people a place to come workout no matter the weather; if it’s too hot out-
side or raining they can come here,” Arellano said. “It’s a great place because kids and adults love it.” The gymnasium has served as an integral part of the Red Shield Center by hosting an array of recreational activities, community gatherings and social events over the years. The wide, open space serves as the perfect spot for Red Shield to offer sports and activities to students as well as the general public, providing a low-cost alternative for adults and families who want to lead a healthy lifestyle. “The kids here feel safe — they have somewhere where they’re being challenged and empowered, in a place where they can just be kids,” Arellano said. “They can utilize it, have fun and be active.” One of Red Shield’s goals is to provide a supervised, friendly and healthy alternative to students spending days after school on the streets, she added. “A place like this is important because what the streets are offering right now is the total opposite,” Arellano said. “Here, they can get away from that and don’t have to worry about the pressure of somebody trying to peer pressure them into doing something they don’t want to do. The facilities will open in June with hours set between 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Masks will be required upon entry but can be removed while engaged in physical workouts with social distancing. Sanitizing solutions will be available for cleaning the equipment.

A Safe Place To Swim BY ANGELINA MARTIN
The pool at The Salvation Army Red Shield Center continues to play a vital role in the community by offering an escape from summer heat and providing a place for people to learn how to swim in a safe and controlled environment. “They know they’re safe in this pool because there’s a lifeguard watching them,” Red Shield Center Director Maria Arellano said. “They can come, have fun and not feel so afraid of the water.” Open swim times, swim lessons and water aerobics can be enjoyed at the pool, and the “vortex” slide provides another fun way for kids to beat the heat. Students can also take a course to become a junior lifeguard and learn water safety, and a new swim program also gives kids the chance to join a team and participate in competitive water sports against each other.
.. .. .. .. . .
“Not only do they have free splash time, but they might also join a team and find something they’re really interested in,” Arellano said. Every summer, the pool fills with local children from the surrounding community who can finally feel safe while swimming, Arellano said. “Many of kids here don’t have those experiences of growing up with a pool, and especially when you come from a Hispanic culture, water can be a very scary thing,” she said. “Now when they come in, parents are starting to feel more comfortable that their kids are learning to swim and are safe.” The pool will be opening in June, with limitations on how many people can use it at one time. Masks will have to be worn when out of the pool. Reservations for use of the pool can be made online at http://redshieldmodesto.org.

KIDZ DAY 2021 | DERBY SCHOLARSHIP
Steven Derby Scholarship helps Red Shield students
BY SABRA STAFFORD
Steven Derby lived his life with a commitment to helping others in whatever way he could, so it was fitting that after his passing his family would start a memorial scholarship in his name to continue his efforts to lend a helping hand. “Steven, known for his loving and giving spirit to all, made a point of reaching out to help others,” his family recalled in his obituary. Derby was born to Marge and John Derby in 1967. He was born with hydrocephalus - water on the brain - and had undergone 11 surgeries by the time he was three years old. The condition left him with cerebral palsy and some developmental issues, but it never impacted his spirit. “Steven never complained and tried his hardest,” recalled his mother Marge Derby. “He went to a special school until he started seventh grade. In junior high and high school many of the kids were not nice to him. He was never invited to
anyone’s party but he never complained or said bad things. All he wanted to be able to do was to help others.” Derby started helping others by routinely donating blood. He volunteered with the local blood bank and met the 12 gallons donation mark. In recognition of his service he was awarded the Red Cross Good Samaritan Award and the Modesto Hometown Hero award. “He believed that each of us has an ability to help others,” his family wrote in his obituary. “His final act of generosity was to make certain that his organs be donated, so he might help someone live a healthier life.” His organs helped save and improve the lives of 15 people. “Steven still lives on by keeping others alive,” Marge Derby said. Supporting the Red Shield has been a tradition for the Derby family and it was one Steven continued. “Steven was a big baseball fan and a supporter of the Red Shield,” said Red Shield Business Director Maria Arellano. “Steven would always donate to our fundraisers, especially our educational programs and baseball program. It was an honor to get to know Steven. On the phone he was so well mannered and always a help. He may not have had a presence physically at the Red Shield but his support was well known.” When Derby passed in September 2019, the family started a scholarship fund to help students at the Red Shield. The Steven Derby Scholarship is awarded to seniors who seek to further their education by applying at the Red Shield. The applicants must have a tie or connection to the Red Shield sometime in

their childhood. The scholarship is $500 and renewable on a yearly basis with reapplication. “The Steven Derby Scholarship is available for seniors to apply and it is not only for the 4.00 students, or UC students,” Arellano said. “This scholarship is meant for teens that are looking to further their education. Teens who struggle with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Those looking at technical trade schools are encouraged to apply.” The Derby family reviewed applications in 2020 during the pandemic and found two young people that would be the first recipients of the Steven Derby scholarships - Karla Morales and Freddie Florez. “Morales is a young woman that grew
up at the Red Shield in our afterschool program,” Arellano said. “She was part of our character building program Girl Guards, as well as part of our At Risk Teen Program Teen Night. Karla has a desire to be a nurse and start off her journey into the field of nursing. “Freddie is a young man that grew up at the Red Shield his entire life,” Arellano said. “He was actively involved in a variety of programs from afterschool program to homework program, character building program of Adventure Corps, Teen Night, baseball, and church programs like Jr. Soldier, Corps Cadet and Worship team. Freddie is a young man with a desire to become a water welder and getting into the field through a technical program.”

Kidz Day 25th anniversary BY KRISTINA HACKER
It takes a special event to bring together members of the community from all walks of life to work towards a common goal. The Salvation Army Red Shield Community Center’s annual fundraiser Kidz Day has been one of those special events for the past 25 years. One day each May, volunteers hit the streets of Stanislaus County to “hawk” special newspaper publications that feature the Red Shield and the youth and spiritual services offered at the South Modesto facility. Selling Kidz Day newspapers and advertising sponsorships are a major fundraiser for the Red Shield, with 100% of the funds raised assisting in providing youth with spiritual, educational and athletic programs including: Virtual Learning Hubs during the pandemic where kids receive a free, hot meal each day; Youth boxing program in which boxers have compete in the USA Boxing Club with annual sanctioned events held at The Red Shield; The After School Homework Club that helps children with homework and academics; and Aquatic programs like Jr. lifeguard, swim team and swim lessons that are available for children six months out of the year in the newly renovated swimming pool. “It’s a place for kids to go to get a sense of belonging, and help them academically and spiritually and just a safe place to be,” said Salvation Army Board and Red Shield Advisory Council member Pete Michelini. Along with raising funds, Kidz Day is also a way to get the word out to the community on what the Red Shield is all about. “The street sales aren’t the big money maker, but it’s the face of Kidz Day and lets people know what it’s all about,” said Cecilia Michelini, Pete’s wife and fellow Kidz Day Committee chair. Hundreds of volunteers — up to 300 in years past — will hit the streets on May 11 to sell the Kidz Day papers. “Service clubs, local businesses, banks, Realtors will volunteer,” said Michelini. “Some are just individuals who like to come out and help us.” Pete Michelini is an expert “hawker” and has won the
Top Seller award many times in the past. In fact, he won so many times, his wife will no longer allow him to take the prize. “Going out on the street to sell papers, it sounds kind of funny, but once you do it you really get into it,” he said. Michelini’s advice for how to be a top Kidz Day seller: “Put a smile on your face and have fun.” The success of Kidz Day is in large part thanks to former Modesto Bee employee Patty Tharp. As an active Red Shield Advisory Council member and proponent of The Red Shield Community Center, Tharp spearheaded Kidz Day and helped to found the Kidz Day Committee.
Before her death in December 2015, after a battle with brain cancer, she held positions on the Red Shield Advisory Board, and was treasurer for the Stanislaus Police Activity League. Even though the Kidz Day publication moved from the Modesto Bee to 209 Multimedia in 2016, the project will continue to be Tharp’s legacy.
