opening of The Salvation Army Red Shield Community Center occurred on March 15, 1970. Over the course of 17 months, a dream became the reality that remains today. The Red Shield has been a learning and activity center, resource, hang-out, recreation and sports facility, aquatic center, oasis, sanctuary, emergency shelter, and a place of worship to multiple generations and thousands of individuals over the past 50 years. The Lord blessed the plans that were made on that November evening in 1968, and He continues to bless us today!

Over the coming year, The Salvation Army Red Shield Community Center will be celebrating their Golden Anniversary. This will include some special events and a spotlight on a different program each month. The year-long festivities will culminate on the weekend of March 14-15, 2020, exactly 50 years since the opening of the center. We are planning a grand party and celebration of 50 years serving the children and families of Modesto.

“An old dream in south Modesto moved closer to reality last night as the Modesto Salvation Army revealed plans for a community center and swimming pool.” These words were reported in a Modesto Bee article in November 1968, following a community meeting at Shackleford School. Over 250 people of all ages from the community crowded into the school cafeteria that evening to discuss an ongoing need— a safe and supervised facility to serve youth and families in South Modesto. George Gagos, The Salvation Army’s Advisory Board Chairperson at the time, told the crowd, “It is our feeling…this has to be a community endeavor. This is your center. We hope to go to the community and ask for funds.” Gagos went on to state that the priority of the center was “your youngsters.” He also mentioned that the idea of a community center in south Modesto was not new. “When I was a teen-ager they were talking about a center (for south Modesto).” The response to the plea was overwhelming. There were offers of help from teenagers, tradespersons, the business community, homemakers, religious and community leaders. Everyone recognized the need for constructive activities for the youth and children in the community. Funding was to be the biggest hurdle before the idea became a reality. At the time of this announcement, only $37,000 had been raised for the project. A total of $346,000 would eventually be needed to complete construction of the facility. Through community and corporate funding campaigns and an anonymous donation of $105,000, the funding goal was reached in the spring of 1969. It took a mere six months to secure the necessary funding. Groundbreaking at our site on Las Vegas Street took place on May 12, 1969 — 50 years ago this week. Construction began soon after, and the official dedication and grand

KIDZ DAY 2019 | SOFTBALL & BASEBALL PROGRAMS

Red Shield Provides Positive Outlet For South Modesto Youth BY DALE BUTLER

With oiled up gloves and bats ready for action, the Red Shield baseball teams began their league play on April 6, with the budding ballplayers taking the field under the direction of numerous volunteers who work together to make the baseball season a success. “I started as a volunteer,” longtime employee Maria Arellano said. “Little by little, I fell in love with the mission of Salvation Army. They do amazing things and change lives. I can’t see myself leaving. It’s a great place.” Arellano fills several roles at Red Shield. She’s the center’s business manager, and a volunteer coordinator for the baseball and softball program. Arellano also is the head coach of the 14-and-under softball team and an assistant coach for the 12-and-under squad. A total of 100 boys and girls, aged 4 to 15 years old, signed up to play for Red Shield this season. “It’s one of the most popular programs,” Arellano said. “The coaches are always giving the kids positive reinforcement to build up their self-esteem. They learn sportsmanship. They learn respect.”

.. .. .. .. . .

“A lot of the other coaches grew up in the neighborhood,” said Damian Flores, a volunteer assistant coach for Red Shield’s 14-and-under, 10-and-under and 8-and-under baseball teams. “They’re giving back to the community.” Flores’ three sons, Damian Louis (12), Andre (11) and Damon (8), are returning baseball players. “I grew up in the Bay Area,” Flores said. “There were drugs and violence. Playing sports kept me out of trouble. You don’t have time to mess around. You have to go to practice and games.” With assistance from Flores and other members of the community, Red Shield renovated the on-site baseball and softball complex during a five-month span. The work included replacing the old backstop, installing new dugouts with roofing, and revamping the field. The improvements cost $30,000. “It was a big project,” Arellano said. “Four to five families were out here every day. They did the hard labor. It showed the love, passion and commitment of the community. They’re not done. They want to fundraise to build batting cages, a scoreboard and shading.” “I helped cut down trees,” Flores said. “I

helped take down the old backstop. I helped when I had time.” Red Shield sponsors a total of 10 teams that play in the Stanislaus County recreational league, including four baseball (14s, 12s, 10s and 8s), four softball (14s, 12s, 10s and 8s), and two co-ed T-ball (6 to 4 year olds). The cost is $100 per player. “We do have financial scholarships,” Arellano said. “We

offer sibling discounts. Kids also have the opportunity to volunteer during the holidays. They get a discount. Some people only pay $40.” “It’s important to have organizations that accommodate underprivileged children,” Flores added. “It’s a preventative tool in the community to keep the kids out of gangs and off the streets. It’s a positive outlet. When you do good things, good things happen.”

AQUATICS PROGRAM | Sponsored by 209 Magazine

A Safe Place To Swim BY ANGELINA MARTIN

Three years after a full-scale renovation, the pool at The Salvation Army Red Shield Center continues to help the local youth escape the approaching summer heat through its aquatics program. Over the years, the pool has served as a vital key to keeping local youth out of the area’s river and canals. “They know they’re safe in this pool because there’s a lifeguard watching them,” Red Shield business manager Maria Arellano said. “They can come, have fun and not feel so afraid of the water.” Open swim times, swim lessons and water aerobics can be enjoyed at the pool, and the “vortex” slide provides another fun way for kids to beat the heat. Students can also take a course to become a junior lifeguard and learn water safety, and a new swim program also gives kids the chance to join a team and participate in competitive water sports against each other. “Not only do they have free splash time, but they might also join a team and find something they’re really interested

in,” Arellano said. Every summer, the pool fills with local children from the surrounding community who can finally feel safe while swimming, Arellano said. “A lot of kids here don’t have those experiences of growing up with a pool, and especially when you come from a Hispanic culture, water can be a very scary thing,” she said. “Now when they come in, parents are starting to feel more comfortable that their kids are learning to swim and are safe.”

Why I Like the Red Shield Janessa “I was raised at the Red Shield. I have been coming here my whole life. I learned about Jesus here and it has been a huge part of my life. The Red Shield has given me such great opportunities to volunteer and be a part of my community. It has also been great because I get to add it to my college applications! The staff at the Red Shield is all very caring and involved. They always make sure that things are fair and that everyone is treated equally.”

Angelica “I love the Red Shield for many reasons. My favorite is the baseball and softball program. I have been playing for many years. It is my dream to be a professional softball player. I feel like the coaches really want to help me reach that dream. They have taught me so much. The coaches at the Red Shield are very caring, kind and nice. They are always pushing us to do our best.”

It all begins with a simple partnership. At Sutter Health, we understand that our care extends outside the walls of our hospitals. KIDZ DAY 2019 | EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Helping Kids Succeed BY ANGELINA MARTIN

When The Salvation Army Red Shield Center first began its homework assistance program in 2005, the inaugural group of seven children who first received help learned the dedication and responsibility that it takes to become a good student, which now, 14 years later, has helped a majority of those students go on to attend college. The success of the homework assistance program is evident in the numbers. What started out as a small group of students has attracted more than 30 local youth who can get help with any subject, including reading, math and science. The program instills good habits in those who participate, who can play at one of the center’s many facilities only once they’ve completed their homework for the day. “When you make something consistent, you see the long-term goals come to life, Red Shield Business Manager Maria Arellano said. “It teaches them that they have responsibilities, and there are certain things they have to do in life and finish in order to go to the next level. The homework assistance program works primarily with students who are learning English, Arellano said, and has seen countless success stories walk out its doors. Students have gone from being unable to read to reading four or five books in one afternoon, and poor grades are often improved after just weeks in the program.

The homework assistance program has grown so much over the years that just one classroom became too small of a space. Now, students learn in several classrooms, which also includes a computer lab. Access to technology for students is important since many don’t have computers at home but are required to know how to use one while at school, Arellano said. “It helps the kids learn familiarity with a mouse and keyboard, she said. Afterschool Homework Program coordinator Berenice Ortega said she has seen firsthand how the assistance can change kids’ overall view on homework. “Some come in with apprehension about doing their homework and we work to change that, Ortega said. The program uses some pretend money to reward the kids and twice a year they can spend it at the store they set up just for them. “It does help keep them on track and their attitude about doing their homework changes, Ortega said. “They come in and get it done and stay motivated. Arellano has no doubt that the homework assistance program has helped many students go on to chase their dreams. “The ones that have gone to college, it’s because they had this place where every day, they came and did their homework...they learned that they had to get it done, and that’s helped them be the successful young people that they are today, she said.

The center’s Afterschool Homework Assistance Program is available from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. Monday through Thursday during the school year. It is free for members and includes a healthy snack for students. Another key component at the Red Shield to help kids succeed is the computer lab. Managed by Computer Lab center Aide Stephanie Thompson, this area is run in conjunction with the homework assistance and is designed to help students reach their academic potential. The computer lab has 24 computers plus printers for the students to use. Thompson has programs to help with mathematics, reading, money management, typing, and education concepts. Children also have some time to play non-violent games. The computer lab is open to elementary students from 3:15 to 4:15 Monday through Thursday. The lab is open to all ages from 4:15 to 6:30 Monday through Thursday.

Back Where He Started BY MACI BOREN AND LT. QUINTON MARKHAM

The Red Shield has been a vital part of the south Modesto community for almost 50 years. Over those years, many children have been impacted by the activities, services and ministry there. Richard Guardado, 33, was one of those children. Guardado spent a good portion of his formative years at the Red Shield Community Center after his family moved to Modesto from Texas in the early nineties. From those first days when he was in third grade all the way through high school, the Red Shield was his home away from home. He was attracted by the variety of programming that was available to kids. “I came for the activities in the Game Room, the late-night hoops, and I was always there for Teen Night.” He knew that at the Red Shield he would always be fed, helped and cared for by the staff. Now, some 25 years later, he fondly remembers spending Friday nights at the teen program, going on field trips and being with friends. However, the thing he remembers most was the Christ-like love that was poured into him. Being at the Red Shield meant that Guardado would always have support, help with homework, and a safe place to be, instead of being out on the streets of south Modesto. He grew up to be a hardworking, responsible student. He graduated from Downey High School in 2004, and then attended Modesto Junior College, and eventually New Mexico State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology

in 2011. For the last three years, he has been employed by Modesto City Schools as an attendance liaison. “It’s what they call a truant officer now.” Guardado went on to say that his job goes beyond just tracking down kids who aren’t attending school. “I’m really like a social worker. Our mindset is more ‘How can we help Richard Guardado’s you and your family?’” experience with the Red Part of his job is discover- Shield began when he was ing the root cause of why a young child and needed a a kid isn’t motivated to at- safe environment. tend school. “I’m a bridge between the family and the community.” A few months ago, Guardado realized that coming back to the Red Shield was on his heart. He was concerned about the kids in the community and wanted to dedicate himself to a program that made such a positive impact on him when he was a kid. “I decided to make volunteering at the Red Shield a priority in my life,” Guardado said. “With all the darkness and negativity in the community, I want to be a light.”

Richard Guardado has been giving back to the Red Shield by volunteering to help with various programs, including a recent field trip to Santa Cruz.

He’s since become a very active volunteer and has spent many hours helping in the Boxing and Teen programs. He recently accompanied some of the teens on a field trip to Santa Cruz, an excursion that helped him get to know the current generation at the Red Shield a little better. “I want the kids to say, ‘He’s from here, and if he can make it, I can make it, too!’”

KIDZ DAY 2019 | GYMNASIUM PROGRAMS

Red Shield Gymnasium Keeps Kids Active

BY ANGELINA MARTIN

Since The Salvation Army Red Shield Center’s development nearly 50 years ago, the gymnasium has served as an integral part of the facility by hosting an array of recreational activities, community gatherings and social events. In an area where opportunities are limited for young people, the gym offers a healthy alternative for youth. “The kids here feel safe — they have somewhere where they’re being challenged and empowered, in a place where they can just be kids,” The Red Shield business manager Maria Arellano said. “They can utilize it, have fun and be active.” A new playing surface and paint came as part of the gym’s renovation several years ago, and now, the wide, open space serves as the perfect spot for The Red Shield to offer sports and activities to students as well as the general public, providing a low-cost alternative for adults and families who want to lead a healthy lifestyle. The gym recently expanded its programming hours to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays for ages 16 and older, offering recreational activities at the gym like the nearby fitness room and daily “pick-up” basketball games. Basketball is a prominent part of The Red Shield’s gym programming, and serves as a good workout for anyone interested in a friendly game. According to Arellano, the afterschool program at The Red Shield utilizes the gym for a number of activities, including structured sports like volleyball, dodgeball, soccer and more in the afternoon, all overseen by the center’s new after school sports coordinator. One of The Red Shield’s goals is to provide a supervised, friendly and healthy alternative to students spending days after school on the streets, she added. “A place like this is important because

what the streets are offering right now is the total opposite,” Arellano said. “Here, they can get away from that and don’t have to worry about the pressure of somebody trying to peer pressure them into doing something they don’t want to do. Currently, The Red Shield is working to create an online calendar of what after school sports will be available on which days. Gym hours are 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.

Boxing Builds Champions in Life BY LT. QUINTON MARKHAM

The boxing program at The Salvation Army’s Red Shield Community Center is a unique athletic opportunity for many boys and girls. Children, teens and young adults who are enrolled in this program are taught physical, mental and spiritual endurance and strength. The experienced coaches are passionate about training young people in the “sweet science” at all levels and abilities, and providing a safe, structured and supervised athletic experience. Like many of the kids at the Red Shield, Head Boxing Coach Juan Barrera started learning how to box at a young age. “My dad was a fighter and started showing me boxing moves when I was 4-years-old, but I didn’t start [organized] boxing until I was 15,” said Barrera. He was drawn to the challenging nature of the sport and to the camaraderie of training with other young boxers. Barrera hung up the gloves at age 20 but couldn’t stay away from the sport for too long. He felt a burning desire to be a mentor and leader to the kids in south Modesto. He has now been a boxing coach at the Red Shield for 12 years. “I enjoy watching the kids’ self-esteem improve, and watching their personality and confidence grow

at the same time,” Barrera said. Though Red Shield boxers have won some championships and earned some titles in recent years, success is not measured by belts and awards. “We’re building champions,” Barrera said. “Not just champions in the ring, but champions in life. We’re watching the kids grow up to be successful, and they come back and share with our current kids.” The Red Shield boxing program offers a good, healthy alternative for kids who might otherwise be at home or on the street. “I feel that the kids and I are blessed to have the pro-

gram,” Barrera said. “I’m also blessed to have the kids here because that puts me here, too. We take care of each other. So many of our kids are from single-parent homes and they need the extra care we can show them.”

KIDZ DAY 2019 | SUCCESS STORIES

From Life Jacket To Lifeguard BY LT. QUINTON MARKHAM

Anna Zamora has been a Red Shield member since she was a little girl and would spend her summers paddling around the shallow end of the pool in her life jacket and learning how to keep her head above water. Anna is now a high school senior and will be graduating soon, but she still spends her summer at the Red Shield pool, only now as a lifeguard. Over the years, Anna has participated in a variety of Red Shield programs including the After-School Homework program, characterbuilding programs for girls, and the Teen Room. The Red Shield staff has seen her blossom from a little girl into an intelligent and vivacious young lady. She has grown physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually through her experiences there. In the summer of 2018, Anna became a certified lifeguard and

worked at The Salvation Army’s Camp Redwood Glen near Santa Cruz. When she returned to Modesto in August, she was hired as a lifeguard at the Red Shield pool, the place where she first learned to swim. She is planning on attending college next year, but we’re hoping she continues to fill one of the lifeguard chairs at the Red Shield every summer.

PROFILE OF A RED SHIELD KID BY LT. QUINTON MARKHAM

Miguel* is at the Red Shield just about every day that we are open. You might say that we are his home away from home. He just is about to complete the fourth grade, and he participates in our Afterschool Homework program. Because there is not much support at home, Miguel relies on our staff to help him finish his homework every day. He also is a big fan of the swimming pool. That's where you will find him most every afternoon during the warmer months. He enjoys going down the slide and playing water games with his friends. Miguel does not have his own swimsuit or towel, so he borrows them from the Red Shield. Last spring, one of our staff members talked him into trying his hand at baseball, so he joined one of our teams. We had to cover most of the registration fee. He could not afford his own mitt and cleats, so again, he borrowed from us. This was a great experience for him. It was the first time that he was on an organized team with a real coach, and the first time he put on a uniform. I would like to say that Miguel is a great ball player, but that wouldn't be true. But what I can say with certainty is that he would have never had this opportunity if not for the Red Shield.

Miguel has a healthy appetite, also. However, I suspect that he doesn’t always have the benefit of a good square meal at home. He usually shows up hungry after school, like most of our kids, and he appreciates the comprehensive, nutritional light meal that we provide in the late afternoon. Last summer, he had the opportunity to attend The Salvation Army’s Camp Redwood Glen in the Santa Cruz Mountains. His mother paid a nominal fee, and the rest was covered through sponsorship. This was Miguel’s first experience at an overnight camp, and he thinks his first time travelling anywhere. We purchased a sleeping bag and towel for him to take along because he did not possess either of these items. Miguel enjoyed a week full of hiking, creek walking, team and individual sports, arts and crafts, campfires, sing-alongs, archery, campouts, and healthy camp meals. He came back to Modesto with a big grin. Miguel’s story isn’t unique. There are many kids who attend programs at the Red Shield that are disadvantaged and need every ounce of assistance that can be provided. The Salvation Army is present in this community to fill the gap and help them find a way to a brighter future. * “Miguel” is a pseudonym I have used to protect anonymity.

Red Shield Offers A Multitude Of Rental Options BY SABRA STAFFORD

When it comes to events, whether it’s a birthday party, a company meeting, or a fundraiser, The Salvation Army Red Shield Center has it all covered. The Red Shield Center originally began renting out spaces as a way to support programs for children several years ago, and now books a few events and parties every month. The Center has a multitude of rental options and prices. The multipurpose room, which is popular for birthday parties and family functions, is 1,944 square feet and can be either rented out completely or just half the space. Half the room can accommodate 97 people and the entire space has a capacity of 194 people. The multipurpose room is true to the name, as it has been used for parties, meetings and townhalls, said Red Shield Business Manager Maria Arellano. The rental includes televisions, dry erase boards, tables and chairs and has an hourly rate of $30 to $60. The gymnasium is the Red Shield Center’s largest rental

space and has been used for fundraising events. The square footage is 3,992 and has capacity for 499 people. The boxing ring can also be moved into the gymnasium for boxing events. The rental runs $100 per hour and includes tables and chairs. One of the most popular rental options is the swimming pool, which can be rented out entirely, half the pool, or a quarter of the pool. The rental gives access to a covered patio area and runs between $100 to $150 per hour. “We get a lot of schools doing end of year parties,” Arellano said. “We also do private parties. We have the lifeguards here and they are included, so it’s always a safe event.” The Red Shield’s conference room is an ideal location for meetings. It has a refrigerator, sink, tables and chairs and can fit around 20 people. The hourly rate for the conference room is $25. The kitchen area also is available for rent at the Red Shield. It’s an industrial kitchen with access to a refrigerator,

food warmer, stove, sink and work station. It rents out for $75 an hour. The game room is another popular option for celebrations. It is 1.025 square feet and can accommodate 128 people. The game room includes a pool table, a ping pong table, and Foosball. The game room can be rented for $75 an hour. The Red Shied rents their chapel for various events and celebrations. “It is more for larger groups that have presentations or a speaker,” Arellano said. “They have access to microphones and screens.” The outdoor area and baseball field are available to rent out as well. “It’s a big field, so you can play what you want out their — kickball, baseball, soccer. It has a play area for the kids and restrooms are available,” Arellano said. “It’s a nice area where you can do a lot of fun activities.” Those interested in renting a space at The Red Shield Center can call 209-538-7111.

KIDZ DAY 2019 | FITNESS

Community Fitness A Priority At Red Shield BY ANGELINA MARTIN

The fitness room at The Salvation Army Red Shield Center has provided community members and students alike with the opportunity to focus on their fitness in a welcoming atmosphere for nearly a decade. As part of the Red Shield’s gymnasium renovation in 2011, the center’s fitness room was a new addition which brought with it plenty of first-class cardio and weight training equipment, like incline treadmills, ellipticals, recumbent bikes and a variety of cable machines. “If you come in in the afternoon, you’ll see it pretty packed with younger kids all the way up to teenagers in here,” Red Shield business manager Maria Arellano said. “Even adults utilize it.” After school, the center’s fitness room is open to kids 16 and older, or those younger than 16 can enter with an adult. A lot of kids utilize the weight room just to get exercise in, Arellano said, or they join programs, like boxing, that take place in the fitness room. “A lot of teenagers come in after school who like to work out… especially the junior high and high school kids — they’re really into working out and looking good,” she said. “And, the other kids can’t get into that room unless they’re in a program, so it entices them to be a part of that so they can utilize it, too.” Before students arrive in the afternoon, adult community members also utilize the fitness room, which offers Zumba and bootcamp classes as well. Individuals are able to purchase fitness class passes via the Red Shield website, and attend courses led by instructors. “It gives people a place to come workout no matter the weather; if it’s too hot outside or raining they can come here,” Arellano said. “It’s a great place because kids and adults love it.”

BY SABRA STAFFORD

As John Derby was approaching his retirement from George Reed Inc., he thought he was nearing the end of taking orders from his boss, Wendell Reed, but it turns out Reed had one more task for his departing vice president. “He thought I needed something to do in my retirement, so he volunteered me to help at The Salvation Army Red Shield Center,” said John Derby. “I didn’t know a thing about The Red Shield and all I knew about The Salvation Army were the kettles at Christmas.” It proved to be a monumental suggestion that led to Derby and his wife, Marge Derby, becoming some of the most active volunteers and ardent supporters of The Salvation Army Red Shield Center. Both of the Derbys have been members of the Advisory Council, with John currently on it. Marge, now helps with various programs and fills in where needed. “I’m just kind of a resource they can come to for whatever they might need,”

said Marge Derby. “It’s a great organization,” John Derby said. “It gives the kids something to do, keeps them off the streets and prepares them for higher education. The volunteer work is well-worth it.” The Derbys have been very active in Kidz Day, the major fundraiser for The Red Shield. “The needs of The Red Shield are many and they use their money wisely,” Marge Derby said. “They are serving more and more children now, and I don’t think many people realize how much it costs to keep it going each year,” said John Derby. The Derbys say the best part of all their volunteer work is the kids that it benefits. “We’ve been able to meet some of those who used The Red Shield as kids and have come back as adults,” John Derby said. “We’re pretty proud of those that go off to college or the service. It doesn’t take much of that to make it all feel worthwhile.”

Please help us to make this a summer to remember for some fortunate child.

■ S ummer Day Camp – The most actionpacked day camp experience a kid can imagine this summer! For $100 a week, a child can learn, play and grow at the Red Shield’s very own Day Camp. Every week is a different themed program. They will be provided with games, crafts, educational exercises, computers, swimming, sports, recreation, lunch, snacks, and field trips. This program really benefits working parents who need positive, supervised activities for their kids during the work week.

■O ther Sponsorship Opportunities – We love collaborating with local businesses and individuals who desire to bless children and teens in other ways. We would love to talk with you about sponsoring haircuts, craft projects, educational projects, field trips, bowling, theater, or sporting event excursions, etc. Please contact us and tell us how you would like to help!
