WA Message From The President & CEO
By Trish Christensen County of
hat does that really mean? I suspect it may vary from person to person in many ways, but there is a general sense that we can lean into. Wellness equates to mental, physical, and inner/spiritual wholeness, and in a perfect world we would all enjoy the lot in balance and harmony constantly. Life is real living. The reality is we don’t survive in a perfect world, in a state of peaceful balance, in every moment of every day.
In our community we see the struggles of the unhoused, witness the effects of the addicted, feel the sorrow of the anxious, lonely, and depressed, and hopefully recognize the strain and drain we individually carry within day to day. In community the goal for every individual is a stable, safe, fulfilling, and joyful life… so that defines the gaps. We are, though, very fortunate to live in a community that is poised to help and support.
The more opportunities I am afforded to develop closer relationships with and understanding of the programs of our governmental partners; to learn about the services provided by our non-profit sector; to connect with our corporate and business entities and learn about the giving and investment they extend our community, the more impressed and reassured I am.
Wellness
The City’s Downtown Streets team, helping the unhoused find their way to housing, is making a difference. So many non-profits working hard to make a difference such as Love Stanislaus, The Gospel Mission, Sierra Vista Child & Family Services, and The Boys and Girls Clubs of Stanislaus County providing for various needs of the residents and youth within our county is making a tremendous difference. Business and corporate entities investing back in the community such as E. & J. Galo Winery, Stanislaus Food Products, Valley First Credit Union, and Modesto Subaru are often quietly supporting in ways we cannot broadly see and appreciate.
I had the amazing opportunity to join my Leadership Modesto Class for Healthcare Day. What a fascinating experience! We spent time at Kaiser Permanente listening to and learning from various team leaders, including one of our incredible Modesto Chamber of Commerce Board Members, Aphriekah DuHaneyWest, Senior Vice President & Area Manager, Central Valley. We had the unique experience of watching a baby delivery training scenario play out for us. We then spent time at Central Valley Doctors Health System – Doctors Medical Center and heard from several of their leadership team, including Chief Executive Officer, Jay Krishnaswamy. We also had the very special experience of a tour of the stroke unit and a roof top visit to the helipad and flight crew. What a great day!
With warm regards, Trish

mission Possible: now & Forever
Community Hospice & Health Services Foundation is excited to announce the Public Phase of their Mission Possible – Now & Forever Campaign. This strategic community initiative aims to raise more than six million dollars to support Community Hospice & Health Services, the oldest and largest non-profit hospice and support services organization caring for those in the Central Valley of California the past 45 years.
There are two aspects to the campaign, Now and Forever.
The “Now” component addresses the following patient centered needs:
• The evolution of core hospice care services includes strengthening the interdisciplinary clinical teams to best serve our diverse communities.
• Expansion of our pediatric hospice and palliative care programs which will encompass a new Family Suite at the Alexander Cohen Hospice House and modernization of patient care systems.
• Developing a home for Hope Counseling and Bereavement Services to meet the growing needs of our community members who are dealing with mental health issues and/or grieving the loss of a loved one.
The “Forever” aspect of the campaign is geared to build the Endowment. This fund will ensure Community Hospice & Health Services is here for generations to come, meeting the needs of those at end-of-life and the emotionally hurt through quality programs that have the hallmarks of compassionate care and stellar education.
The Mission Possible effort is led by Chairman Tom Eakin who shared, “I am truly honored to be a part of this opportunity to invest in the future of this worthy nonprofit organization that consistently turns no one away for hospice services based on ability to pay.”
Tom is joined by the campaign Leadership Cabinet of 50 distinguished, mission minded individuals who are passionate about ensuring Community Hospice & Health Services is available to you and your family when you need them most.

stanislaus County touts completion of Crows Landing road bridge
BY SABRA STAFFORD
A project 23 years in the making was celebrated Monday morning when Stanislaus County held an official ribbon cutting for the Crows Landing Road Bridge.
The Crows Landing Road Bridge crosses the San Joaquin River and connects the Westside communities to Stanislaus County. A traffic survey found that the bridge serves roughly 8,000 vehicles daily with almost 20 percent being truck traffic.
An inspection of the bridge determined it was structurally deficient and functionally obsolete. Time and weather had brought the condition of the bridge to a point that it required a full replacement in order to provide a safer crossing over the river.
Doing such a project would prove to be costly and timeconsuming.
“This is a large infrastructure project and I talk about these all the time that people think we can just change out a bridge,” said Stanislaus County Supervisor Vito Chiesa, whose District 2 meets up with Supervisor Channce Condit’s District 5 at the bridge. “We’ve got such issues on our whole bridge system and when you see something like this that is one of the most important crossings over the San Joaquin River finally be completed, this is something to be so proud of.”
The project’s estimated construction cost is approximately $22,720,477 with most of the funding coming from the federally funded Highway Bridge Program. Other project funding is also coming from the Senate Bill 1, Road Maintenance and Rehabilitation Account.
The bridge is described as a five-span, post-tensioned box girder that is 723 feet in length and uses 112-foot long cast in steel shell concrete piles that are 72-inches in diameter.
The new bridge has two 12-foot wide lanes, one going in each direction, a 12-foot wide center median and four feet
shoulders on each side. There is a dedicated right turn lane southbound on Crows Landing Road to westbound Carpenter Road.
The project also added a center median lane north of the intersection for improved merging from eastbound Carpenter Road to northbound Crows Landing Road.
The county dove into the initial work of the replacement back in 2001, said Stanislaus County Public Works Director David Leamon. The construction began in earnest in August 2021.
“It’s been a journey, this bridge and it’s been interesting,” Leaman said. “We started this project in 2001. So, it took us 23 years from start to finish. I don’t think people appreciate how long it takes to get something like this done. Look at the list of permits. We still had to get a Coast Guard permit even though there are no more ships anymore, but it’s still navigable according to the federal government.”
The work had to take several pauses over the years when the rains pushed the rover up and over the banks.
“When we had Catfish Camp evacuated we had one of our shop trucks out here helping to fill tires and getting people moved down the road,” Leaman recalled.
This is the third incarnation of the Crows Landing Road Bridge. The first was a swing bridge that cost $35,196 and opened in May of 1887. The swing bridge was one lane and would swing out to allow for steam ships navigating the San Joaquin River to pass by. It utilized 40-foot long wood piles.
The second bridge was completed in 1949 and came about after a report found the one lane bridge was patchy and that there was danger of a heavy vehicle falling through one of the holes. That bridge used 40-foot long concrete piles and came in at a cost of $172,023.

The Next Generation of Care is at DMC
Written by Ara Najarian, Communications Manager, Central Valley Doctors Health System
Although many people might know about the scale of care and innovation at Doctors Medical Center (DMC), they may not know that DMC is, in fact, a teaching hospital. Indeed, the recent partnership with UC Davis Health for enhanced trauma care, cardiothoracic surgery, and OB/GYN residencies, brings the number of DMC’s academic training and teaching programs to 13.
Call it DMC-U.
What exactly is a teaching hospital? Just what it sounds like: a hospital that provides clinical education and training to current and future health professionals.
The new relationship includes a transfer agreement with the immediate benefit that DMC’s Trauma Center, the first Level II Verified Trauma Center in the region, can transfer patients to UC Davis Medical Center (UCDMC) for specific, specialty care – typically, for burns or ophthalmic trauma. This alliance has a significant local benefit as there are only 123 burn centers and only 216 ophthalmic trauma-treatment centers in the United States.
The near-future benefits of the partnership include DMC’s Residency Programs to train the next generation of cardiothoracic (organs in the chest) surgeons and obstetrics/gynecology physicians (OBGYNs) from the UC Davis School of Medicine.
Significantly, in addition to the 13 academic-affiliated programs, DMC has two residency programs for Family Medicine (training eight physicians per year) and Orthopedic Surgery (three physicians per year) that draw from medical schools nationwide.
For the Central Valley communities, a key element of DMC’s Residency Programs is community. For example, the customized OBGYN residency is integrated into DMC’s community-based care network, including out-patient clinical practice.
Another benefit, backed by peer-reviewed research, is that teaching hospitals have better outcomes: “We find that across a very wide range of medical and surgical conditions, patients receiving care at teaching hospitals have superior outcomes,” said Ashish Jha, Dean of the Brown University School of Public Health and senior author of a 2017 study that examined more than 21 million Medicare hospitalizations at more than 4,000 hospitals.
Indeed, part of reducing mortality rates is also having specially trained, high acuity services, and DMC is part of the majority of teaching hospitals that feature a Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) and a verified Trauma Center.
“By inviting top medical programs to train at DMC, we enhance the level of care in our communities with a combination of real-life expertise and the latest research-based approaches for compassionate care,” said Misty Oglesby, Chief Nursing Officer at DMC. “The relationship with UC Davis really shows how we are all Better Together.”
When it comes to managing your risk and maximizing your insurance coverage, you need to know your options. We take the time to understand you, your business and your unique needs. We offer the expertise that will lead to the best solution. Our partnership with HUB International gives us access to new and specialty markets while still being the area leader in self-insurance or group captive programs. Together, we can find the right option for you.
Harnessing the Healing Power of Nature: The Importance of Plant-Based Skincare in Healthcare
By Kayshaun Brooks, Holistic Pain & Trauma Warrior
As a former nurse and someone who worked a total of 20 years in the medical field, I’m very passionate about educating others on how to live life more holistically. Our skin is the largest organ for the human body and in today's fast-paced world, where stress, pollution, & unhealthy lifestyle choices are rampant, taking care of our skin has become more crucial than ever. As awareness grows about the potential harmful effects of synthetic chemicals found in many skincare products, a shift towards natural alternatives, particularly organic plant-based skincare, has gained momentum. This shift is not merely a trend but a significant step towards holistic healthcare.
Plant-based skincare products utilize the healing properties of botanical ingredients to nourish, rejuvenate and protect the skin. Unlike synthetic counterparts, which may contain harsh chemicals and artificial fragrances, plant-based products are gentle yet effective, making them suitable for all skin types, including sensitive and problematic skin conditions like eczema and acne.
One of the primary advantages of plant-based skincare lies in its ability to harness the power of nature's bounty. Plants are rich sources of vitamins, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids, which play vital roles in maintaining skin health. For instance, ingredients like aloe vera, known for its soothing
properties, help calm inflammation and promote healing, while jojoba oil mimics the skin's natural oils, providing hydration without clogging pores.
Moreover, plant-based skincare products are often sustainably sourced and environmentally friendly, making them a preferable choice for conscious consumers. By opting for products derived from renewable resources, individuals can reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to preserving the planet.
The benefits of plant-based skincare extend beyond personal well-being to societal health. Many synthetic chemicals found in skincare products have been linked to adverse health effects, including hormonal disruptions and allergic reactions. By choosing natural alternatives, consumers can minimize their exposure to potentially harmful substances, thereby reducing the burden on healthcare systems.
The importance of plant-based skincare in healthcare cannot be overstated. Embracing natural ingredients, individuals can enhance their skin's health, appearance but also contribute to a healthier planet and reduce the strain on healthcare resources. Continue to prioritize holistic wellness, incorporating plant-based skincare into our daily routines emerges as a wise and impactful choice for long-term health and sustainability.

how social Media is revolutionizing Client attraction in healthcare
Written by Kathryn Kim Ramos, Sisbro Innovation Website and Digital Marketing Consultant
The healthcare industry has increasingly recognized the power of social media as a tool for attracting clients and enhancing patient engagement. By leveraging platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn, healthcare providers can reach a broader audience, build trust, and provide valuable information to current and potential patients. This article explores how the healthcare sector utilizes social media to attract clients and improve patient experience.
One of the primary ways healthcare providers use social media is to empower patients through education and information. By sharing articles, videos, and infographics about health topics, medical conditions, and preventive care, healthcare organizations can position themselves as authoritative sources of information. This educational content not only attracts followers but also empowers individuals to make informed decisions about their health, fostering a sense of control and responsibility. For example, a hospital might post videos explaining the importance of regular check-ups, or a clinic might share articles about managing chronic diseases.
Social media also plays a crucial role in fostering patient trust. By showcasing their services and facilities through virtual tours of hospitals, introducing staff members, and sharing patient testimonials, healthcare organizations can give potential clients a glimpse of what to expect. This transparency not only helps build trust but also reassures patients about the quality of care they will receive, enhancing patient satisfaction. For instance, a dental clinic might share before-and-after photos of cosmetic procedures, highlighting their expertise and successful outcomes.
Another significant advantage of social media is its ability to facilitate direct communication between healthcare providers and patients. Platforms like Facebook and Twitter enable real-time interaction, allowing patients to ask questions, schedule appointments, and receive prompt responses. This immediate access to information and support enhances patient satisfaction and encourages people to choose responsive and engaged providers. For example, a healthcare provider might use Twitter to answer common health questions or provide updates on flu shot availability.
Social media also plays a crucial role in patient engagement and community building. Healthcare organizations can create online communities where patients can connect, share experiences, and support each other. These communities foster a sense of belonging and provide valuable emotional support, especially for individuals dealing with chronic
illnesses or undergoing long-term treatments. For example, a cancer treatment center might host a Facebook group where patients and survivors can share their stories and offer encouragement.
Moreover, social media advertising allows healthcare providers to target specific demographics and reach potential clients more effectively. Organizations can use targeted ads to promote their services to individuals based on age, location, interests, and online behavior. This precision ensures marketing efforts are directed at those most likely to need and benefit from the services offered. For example, a pediatric clinic might run Facebook ads targeting parents in a specific geographic area, promoting their child's health services.
Finally, monitoring and analyzing social media activity provides healthcare organizations valuable insights into patient needs and preferences. Providers can tailor their services and communication strategies to better meet patient expectations by tracking engagement metrics, feedback, and sentiment. This data-driven approach helps healthcare organizations stay relevant and responsive in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
Social media has become an indispensable tool for the healthcare industry in attracting clients and enhancing patient engagement. By educating the public, showcasing services, facilitating communication, building communities, and leveraging targeted advertising, healthcare providers can effectively connect with current and potential patients. As social media continues to evolve, its role in healthcare marketing will only grow, offering new opportunities to improve patient care and satisfaction.

leadership Modesto
Healthcare is vital for a multitude of reasons. Primarily, it ensures physical well-being by providing medical interventions, preventive care, and treatments for illnesses. Accessible healthcare fosters a healthier society, reducing mortality rates and enhancing quality of life. It also promotes economic stability by enabling a productive workforce and averting financial crises due to medical expenses. During the month of June, the 2024 Leadership Modesto Class (Best Class Ever!) toured two healthcare systems that provide important services to Stanislaus County residents: Kaiser Permanente Modesto and Central Valley Doctors Health System.
FIRST STOP: Kaiser Permanente Modesto
Kaiser Permanente, one of the nation's largest notfor-profit health plans, serves 12.6 million members. What makes Kaiser unique is it’s novel alignment of the hospital, health plan and medical group for a comprehensive and integrated delivery strategy of healthcare services. Kaiser provides value-based care while keeping cost low for members and does so without sacrificing quality. One example of this is offering opportunities to practice vital skills in their Simulation Lab. Another example is of their Save a Life Program, which leans on aggressive cancer screening instead of aggressive treatment. The program was started in the Central Valley 13 years ago and has saved hundreds of lives. These programs make Kaiser a leader in supporting a thriving community.
LAST STOP: Central Valley Doctors Health System
Central Valley Doctors Health System, formerly known as Doctors Medical Center, is a comprehensive healthcare system committed to providing toptier medical care, offering a range of services from prevention to cutting-edge technologies, with a dedicated team of professionals across various disciplines. The system pioneers cardiac and neonatal care, advanced stroke and trauma treatment, and has expertise across major medical specialties. During the tour, the Best Class Ever had the chance to view the facility’s Helipad, see lifesaving and state of the art stroke machines, and hear about their Injury Prevention activities in the community. These services make the system better together.
Both these healthcare partners are a staple to the Stanislaus community. Shoutout to the care and support teams for all their hard work!

As Golden Valley Health Centers (GVHC) continues to serve our communities, we are steadily analyzing opportunities to grow and partner with others toward our mission: to provide access to high-quality health care for all, serving with dignity, respect and compassion.
For many years, GVHC has been a supporting partner in the Valley Consortium for Medical Education. This physician residency program has been housed at the West Modesto Paradise Medical Office, a clinic operated by Stanislaus County Health Services Agency.
Earlier this year, Stanislaus County Health Services Agency announced their intention to consolidate operations. With the approval of the Board of Supervisors, the County gave GVHC the opportunity to absorb the Paradise clinic as well as their Specialty Care and rehabilitation clinic on McHenry Avenue. These clinical services are critical to the healthcare system in our community, offering medical services to thousands of residents in need.
We are proud to be adding Modesto Paradise and McHenry Specialty clinics to our network as of July 1. Because Golden Valley Health Centers already serves nearly 100,000 patients in Stanislaus County, we are uniquely equipped to take on this expansion of services and patients. GVHC now operates 50 clinics in the Central Valley and offers 21 specialty services!
We are particularly excited about the opportunity to serve as the lead facilitator in the medical residency program. “Sustaining and building a critical pipeline for health care providers in our area is a top priority for us,” said David Quackenbush, Golden Valley Health Centers President and CEO. “The organization is committed to medical education for the health and wellness of all people who call the Central Valley home, and we believe that continuity of care for both patients in our community and family medicine resident physicians is very important as we design for the future growth of this area,” he added.
Since 1972, the community has come to rely on and trust Golden Valley Health Centers for quality primary care. Because of Federally Qualified Health Centers, like GVHC, people in our communities have access to a variety of quality medical services, no matter their income or barriers. We are committed to quality and focus on health center excellence, ensuring that patients receive the highest-quality care at our clinics.
As a community partner and leader in the healthcare space, we look forward to expanding services to provide much-needed medical care for residents of Modesto.
National Health Center Week is August 5 – 9. We look forward to hosting a Grand Opening celebration at the Paradise Medical Clinic on August 6 and invite the community to join us! Visit GVHC.org for more information about our organization and upcoming events.
