AA Message From The President & CEO

Celebrating arts and Culture in greater Modesto

s we look toward the future of our community, it is impossible to overlook the vibrant arts and culture scene that plays a pivotal role in shaping the identity of Modesto and Stanislaus County. The rich tapestry of creativity and talent that our city fosters is truly remarkable, and it is something that continues to inspire both residents and visitors alike.

One of Modesto’s hidden gems is the Prospect Theater, a local treasure where creativity and innovation take center stage. It offers audiences a unique, intimate experience, bringing diverse stories to life and offering a space for artists to thrive. Equally majestic is the Gallo Center for the Arts, whose grandeur has made it the cultural heart of our city. With world-class performances ranging from dance to theater and music, it stands as a beacon of artistic excellence in the region.

Not to be outdone, the historic State Theater exudes charm and nostalgia, offering a perfect blend of classic cinema, live performances, and community-centered events. This beloved venue is a reminder of the important role that history plays in our ongoing cultural evolution.

Modesto’s artistic pulse is also felt in its local music scene, where musicians and bands showcase their talent and creativity at venues throughout the city.

From jazz to rock, classical to contemporary, there’s no shortage of local talent making waves on stage. Painters, sculptors, makers, and crafters are equally essential in shaping Modesto’s well-rounded art scene, with their work on display in galleries, public spaces, and local markets, offering inspiration and beauty to our community.

Each year, the Modesto Area Music Awards (MAMA) is an annual celebration of the musicians, bands, and artists that continue to push the envelope, making our city a hub for creative expression.

The MAMA Awards highlight the incredible contributions of these local talents and provide a platform for recognizing the cultural heartbeat of Modesto.

In celebrating the arts, we celebrate the soul of our city. I encourage all of you to explore, participate in, and support our local arts and culture, ensuring that it continues to flourish for generations to come.

With warm regards, Trish

second harvest of the greater Valley receives refrigerated Vehicle and funds to support People facing hunger in san Joaquin and stanislaus Counties

Second Harvest of the Greater Valley, a member of the Feeding America® network, is excited to announce the arrival of a new refrigerated truck and an additional $10,000 in operating support. These donations will be used to Help SHGV further their mission of providing food access to the most vulnerable in our population.

The Darden Restaurants, Inc. Foundation -- the charitable arm of Darden Restaurants – and Penske collaborated on this opportunity to help support communities that are disproportionately impacted by hunger.

1 in 10 Adults in San Joaquin and Stanislaus County suffer from lack of food. This truck and the monetary donation will allow us to continue to equitably distribute food across the counties we serve. It will also help us replace aging vehicles when the time comes.

“Hunger remains a widespread issue that touches lives in every corner of our country. At Darden and the Darden Restaurants, Inc. Foundation, we believe in taking action to make a difference. By partnering with Feeding America member food banks, we’re not just raising awareness—we’re providing the resources needed to help families access the food they deserve,” says Stephanie Ghertner, Executive Director of the Darden Restaurants, Inc. Foundation.

“This truck will allow us flexibility in our fleet that will keep us on the road in the event of a breakdown. It will also help us continue to serve at the high levels we see daily. Said Director of Operations Juan Osuna.

Second Harvest of the Greater Valley is one of ten Feeding America partner food banks that the Darden Restaurants, Inc. Foundation and Penske are supporting with this grant, valued at more than $200K.

Second Harvest of the Greater Valley Food Bank opened in 1976 initially serving senior citizens in San Joaquin County. Over the years it has expanded its reach and impact, now distributing more than 20 million pounds of food to 350,000 people annually in San Joaquin and Stanislaus Counties through our network of over 95 partners and food distribution programs.

Darden’s family of restaurants features some of the most recognizable and successful

brands in fullservice dining — Olive Garden, LongHorn Steakhouse, Yard House, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, The Capital Grille, Seasons 52, Eddie V’s and Bahama Breeze. For more information, visit www.darden.com. The Darden Restaurants, Inc. Foundation works to bring to life our spirit of service through its philanthropic support of charitable organizations across the country. Since 1995, the Darden Restaurants, Inc. Foundation has awarded more than $110 million in grants to non-profit organizations such as Feeding America, National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation (NRAEF) and American Red Cross.

Feeding America is committed to an America where no one is hungry. We support tens of millions of people who experience food insecurity to get the food and resources they say they need to thrive as part of a nationwide network of food banks, statewide food bank associations, food pantries and meal programs. We also invest in innovative solutions to increase equitable access to nutritious food, advocate for legislation that improves food security and work to address factors that impact food security, such as health, cost of living and employment. We partner with people experiencing food insecurity, policymakers, organizations, and supporters, united with them in a movement to end hunger. Visit FeedingAmerica.org to learn more.

Central West ballet delights With artistry

Central West Ballet in Modesto is the only professional ballet company south of Sacramento, east of the Bay Area and north of Los Angeles, performing for 37 years. A resident company of the Gallo Center, we perform four different productions a year entertaining 11,000 community audience members annually. Our performance seasons offer something for everyone and 2024-2025 is no exception: we opened in October with sold out performances of Dracula, December features The Nutcracker and Nutcracker in Jazz, March 2025 brings Pirates & Cowboys and May closes with Sleeping Beauty. The Nutcracker is a holiday tradition; this year we will include 95 children from Modesto and surrounding communities, making it the largest Nutcracker production in seven counties. We have built our reputation on the artistic development of local talent as well as those who come from across the U.S. to dance at CWB, and have 22 professional company members, 4 apprentices and 3 trainees.

CWB’s Academy of Dance was founded in 2015, and our third studio is now open, offering more class options for more community students! Our teachers are our company dancers, providing the best technique and training in the valley. We offer ballet, sensory ballet, tap, jazz, modern, contemporary, creative movement beginning at 2 years old, adult classes, and work with charter and home schools to provide classes for school credit. We know how important it is to expose children to the performing arts in general and ballet in particular and offer special school productions for most of our performances. Our ballets often have narration to move the story along, so we utilize ASL Interpreters to open opportunities for our deaf and hard of hearing community to more fully enjoy those ballets.

We produced the first low sensory production ever staged for children and their families or caregivers at the Gallo Center in December 2019; our Low Sensory/Special Needs Nutcracker has been so well received that we will produce a Low Sensory/Special Needs Sleeping Beauty in May 2025 as well.

Under the direction of Rene Daveluy, Artistic Director and Leslie Ann Larson, Rehearsal and Academy Director, CWB is proud to entertain and educate patrons and students in the power, magic, discipline, and beauty of the art that moves us all.

We invite you to join us time and again in 2024-25!

modesto is the Cultural Hub of the Central valley

Nestled in the heart of California, Modesto is a hidden gem bursting with vibrant arts and culture. From live music to public art, this city has something for everyone.

Did you know Modesto is rated #1 in a national survey for its “under the radar music scene?”

The Sacramento Bee* said, “From open-air performances at the Mancini Bowl in Graceada Park, to the intimate shows at the Gallo Center for the Arts, music enthusiasts can experience a variety of genres, including rock, blues, country, and jazz.

Downtown Modesto comes alive with ‘Music in the Plaza’ during summers, where local musicians serenade the streets.” Recognition like this of Modesto’s cultural creativity and novelty is due in part to community and local government support that together helps foster unique and authentic arts scene. That’s what being a regional cultural hub is about!

As they say, ‘there’s more!’ Modesto’s unique PorchFest lets the community enjoy each other’s talents while strolling Modesto’s neighborhoods, and how many other cities do you know that have musical awards like MAMA’s (Modesto’s Modesto Area Music Awards)?

People come from all over the region and beyond to enjoy productions at the Gallo Center for the Arts with Modesto Performing Arts community theatre, the State Theatre, and the Prospect Theatre Project to excite their senses and open their minds. Modesto kids have musical opportunities including the Youth Orchestra and the Valley Music Institute that can help prepare them to lead the community’s musical future.

There are culture and arts experiences for all in Modesto. Museum-goers now have the Modesto Childrens’ Museum and the Graffiti Car Museum, both supported in part by over a million dollars from the City of Modesto, that offer both regular exhibits and special events. Modesto has lovingly maintained its historical museums, the McHenry Mansion, and the McHenry Museum.

Go back in time with the McHenry Mansion Christmas Tea on the first Tuesday in December and Candlelight Tours on December 21st and 22nd. The McHenry Museum will host a Children’s Holiday Craft Faire on the first Saturday of December, so bring the family!

Citywide murals have grown to be an arts experience with regional appeal. Strolling through Modesto’s Mural Alley, visitors are greeted by a kaleidoscope of colors and stories, each mural telling a unique tale of the city’s rich history and diverse culture. A three-milliondollar Clean California Grant implemented by the City is helping to enhance the Mural Alley experience with new lighting and paving. “Modesto’s arts scene is truly unique,” says local CEO of Downtown Modesto Partnership, Heidi Savage. “The City’s support and enthusiasm make it a wonderful place to experience, create, and share art.”

The Modesto Culture Commission is planning a giant mural for 10th Street parking garage wall facing 10th Street Plaza to commemorate Modesto’s first 150 years with $25,000 of City funding. That big new mural will be a memorable backdrop for events like Dia de los Muertos, Friday Music in the Plaza, and Rockin’ Holidays.

Whether you’re a music lover, art enthusiast, or simply looking for a vibrant community experience, Modesto’s arts and culture scene has something to offer. Come and discover the creativity and passion that make this city a cultural hub

Cultivating Change Through Petal Loft’s Giant Paper blooms

For Jennifer, the creative force behind Petal Loft, paper flowers became more than just a craft—they were an escape. In a time of personal darkness, she discovered the world of oversized paper blooms and taught herself to create these massive floral pieces. What started as a personal project evolved into a thriving business, where her artistic creations transform events into stunning visual escapes.

"I’ve always been crafty," Jennifer shares, reflecting on how this journey began. "When I found these giant flowers online, I knew I had to learn how to make them. It became my outlet, my way of changing the atmosphere around me."

What sets Petal Loft apart isn’t just the size of the flowers but the care and craftsmanship behind each piece. Each bloom is handmade, stretched, and shaped with precision, often taking hours to complete. While the art of paper flowers dates back centuries, Jennifer brings a fresh perspective, creating grand installations that have left clients speechless.

"Twice I’ve been told my work is ‘innovative,’" she recalls, still surprised by the reaction. "It’s funny because paper flowers have been around for so long.”

As a business owner and artist, Jennifer faces the challenge of balancing creativity with structure. "As creatives, our minds are always moving onto the next idea," she admits. "I’ve learned that discipline is key. Writing down all those ideas helps me stay focused on the task at hand."

Her background in visual communications plays a significant role in her designs. Jennifer has the ability to see both the big picture and the smallest details that make an installation come to life. Unlike florists who work within the constraints of the seasons, Jennifer’s medium allows her to create year-round, with no limits to size or color. "You can’t grow a 3ft flower," she notes with a smile.

At the core of her work is a deeply personal philosophy. "For me, these flowers are about changing the environment. I believe in pleasing God and walking through the garden with Him, and sometimes, that means you have to cultivate a new atmosphere around you."

Jennifer’s giant blooms don’t just make a statement— they carry a message. Through Petal Loft, she’s helping others transform their spaces and create memories as grand as her flowers.

Digital marketing and Arts & Culture: The new era of Digital Art Transforming our Culture

The intersection of digital marketing and arts & culture has ushered in a new era of digital art that is reshaping the way we experience and engage with creativity. This transformation is not only revolutionizing the art world but also influencing cultural trends on a global scale. As technology advances, digital art becomes more accessible, interactive, and integral to our daily lives.

The Rise of Digital Art

Digital art encompasses various creative expressions, from digital paintings and illustrations to 3D models, animations, and virtual reality experiences. Artists are leveraging technology to push the boundaries of traditional art forms, creating immersive and interactive pieces that engage audiences in new and exciting ways. Platforms like Instagram and virtual galleries have become essential spaces for artists to showcase their work to a global audience.

Changing Our Cultural Landscape

The proliferation of digital art significantly impacts our culture by making art more accessible to people regardless of their location or background. Virtual exhibitions and online galleries allow anyone with an internet connection to experience art worldwide. This accessibility fosters a more inclusive cultural environment where diverse voices and perspectives are celebrated.

Moreover, digital art often reflects contemporary societal issues, serving as a medium for commentary and discussion. It can spark conversations and influence public opinion, thereby playing a crucial role in shaping cultural narratives.

The Role of Digital Marketing

Digital marketing is instrumental in amplifying the reach and impact of digital art. Through social media platforms, artists and cultural institutions can connect directly with their audiences, share their creative processes, and build communities around their work. Engaging content, regular updates, and interactive elements like live streams and virtual tours enhance audience involvement.

Search engine optimization (SEO) helps artists and galleries increase their online visibility, making it easier for people interested in specific art forms or cultural experiences to find them.
