SALUTE TO NURSES | HONORING NURSES

2020: The Year of the Nurse I n honor of the 200th birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the World Health Organization declares 2020 as the year of the nurse.

According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the health care field will add 3,059,800 new registered nursing jobs between 2018 and 2028; that’s a growth rate of 12%. In support of nurses, WHO suggests the “Triple Impact” to give these professionals the tools they need to excel in patient care: better health, stronger

economies and greater gender equality. With these tools, nursing experts are given the opportunity to receive a formal education, enroll in training programs and enter a career that stimulates the economy and health care field.

WHO WAS FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE? Florence Nightingale is widely known as the founder of modern nursing. During the Crimean War, she oversaw providing care for the British and allied soldiers in Turkey. Sometimes called, “The Lady with the Lamp,” Nightingale would go on to found the first scientifically based nursing school in London, in 1860. She was also responsible for instituting training

for midwives and nurses who practiced in workhouse infirmaries. Her work continues to inspire medical professionals today and led to her birthday, May 12, being designated to commemorate International Nursing Day each year.

REPORTS AND CAMPAIGNS As part of the 2020 celebration for nurses, WHO will release its first State of the World’s Nursing Report. The document will describe how the nursing workforce can help deliver Universal Health Coverage and Sustainable Development Goals. It will also highlight new areas for policy growth over the next three to five years. 

2020 will be the final year for the Nursing Now campaign that was started in 2018. The movement focused on five areas: 1. A more prominent voice in health policy making. 2. Greater investments in the nursing workforce. 3. Recruiting more nurses in leadership roles. 4. C onducting research to find where nurses can have the most impact. 5. Share of the best nursing practices. You can help spread the message by sharing the Nursing Now campaign across social media, hosting local events or advocating for the nurses in your community.

Juggling Life as a Nurse/Caregiver For Casa de Modesto hero [ heer-oh ] a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character a person who, in the opinion of others, has special achievements, abilities, or personal qualities and is regarded as a role model or ideal Most days, the profession of direct care to the elderly feels like a calling – it is the most essential, impactful, rewarding type of work one might enter into. As nursing staff and caregivers respond to the needs of these often frail individuals, they begin to experience the importance of their job. Providing a safe and secure environment for these individuals to live in. The need to be more than just a Provider of Care with regards to physical needs, but also often emotional, social, and spiritual support and encouragement as well. But nurses/caregivers often carry emotional and physical “battle scars” as they go through their daily duties at work as well as at home. Guilt of not doing or being enough for those they care for; frustration with required changes when stability is so important for one’s own emotional stability let alone the stability of those they serve; regulatory challenges that make it nearly impossible to do the job that was laid on their heart in years prior as they entered into school to try and make a difference in the world of care and safety for those they support on a daily basis. These “battle scars” need their own recognition and healing which often comes through validation and affirmation of those around them, acknowledging the amazing commitment and gift they give to those they care for in spite of the return on their investment.

Thank you so much for working so hard every day to make sure others are able to receive the care they need to be safe and secure in our senior living environment at Casa de Modesto whether it is in Skilled Nursing, Assisted Living, or our Memory care unit. I appreciate all your hard work. I send my prayers out for all nurses/caregivers, daily. It’s very thoughtful of you to be out there risking your own health/lives to protect the lives of others. Thank you again for juggling responsibilities at home and at work to try and help society be a better, healthier place. It is our aim to support you and to celebrate you as our heroes here at Casa de Modesto! We acknowledge the efforts and the scars that may come from this, and you are appreciated!

Blessings to you all, Curt Willems, Executive Director Casa de Modesto

I’d like to thank those who have chosen to serve and care for our senior population that might be afflicted with the virus here at Casa de Modesto, even though the mere act of caring for them may put themselves and their loved ones at risk for exposure. I’d like to thank those who run towards the line of danger as the rest of the world is called to retreat into the safety of their homes under the auspices of isolation and quarantine. This was not a battle you signed up for as a direct care nurse/ caregiver, but it is one for which you’re taking up arms and fighting regardless. Again, Thank You! I’d like to thank our staff who give of themselves daily, not only to our Senior population, but also, back home, to their own families as they try and juggle “overtime” and sometimes “double shifts” with homeschooling, bandaged knees and elbows, meal making and sometimes as a single parent all by themselves or because spouses are unavailable because of their own jobs or fear that they may get what the staff member has been exposed to at work.

SALUTE TO NURSES | TRUE HEROES

Nurses’ Role During COVID-19

I

n December 2019, a devastating coronavirus, now known as COVID-19, surfaced in Wuhan, China causing mass illness throughout the country. The global pandemic has led to nationwide lockdowns in Italy, major-league sporting cancellations and uncertainty throughout world stock markets. On March 14, 2020, President Donald Trump declared a national emergency regarding the coronavirus. Medical professionals, including nurses, are on the front lines risking exposure while limiting the spread and symptoms of the virus. The union National Nurses United urges employers to keep their health experts safe by incorporating necessary protocols. • Employers shall clearly communicate with all health care workers, including notifying nurses when there is a possible or confirmed COVID-19 case. • Facilities should be prepared for a surge of patients with potential or confirmed cases of the virus which should include how to isolate and care for patients, along with how to provide safe practices for medical staff. • Employers shall conduct a thorough investigation after a COVID-19 patient is identified, ensuring the staff who were exposed are identified and noti-

fied. Nurses who faced exposure shall be placed on precautionary leave for at least 14 days without losing their pay or benefits. • Nurses and other health care workers must also be provided with efficient protective gear and any available education and training that may help experts understand the outbreak more efficiently.

HOW NURSES CAN STAY SAFE Since much is still unknown about how COVID19 spreads, nurses and others in the medical field are at an increased risk of exposure. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention urges all nursing professionals to wear properly fit-

ting masks and protective gloves while attending to patients.

HELP A NURSE The coronavirus is a widespread pandemic that is causing major corporations to close their doors temporarily. As a citizen, you can help the medical professionals in your area by listening to guidelines from your state’s officials. Many are prohibiting events that are expected to draw over a specific number of people. To help lessen your exposure and need for medical assistance, avoid visiting high-traffic areas where the risk of obtaining the virus is enhanced.

adjustments that make patients more comfortable as users can typically make adjustments on their own.

TELEHEALTH Telehealth is a relatively new technology found in hospitals and clinics. Rather than visiting a facility for minor issues, patients can communicate with their nurses via video chat. It’s a valuable tool to keep contagious people away from the public and receive medical advice remotely. Video communication is also valuable to describe your symptoms or show medical professionals issues like rashes or bumps. Of course, if an expert feels that the problem is severe, they will suggest that you visit their clinic in person. However, in some cases, they may resolve that the issue is manageable and call in a prescription. Mental health assistance is also included in telehealth communication. Patients can speak to counselors or nurses online from a comfortable environment like their home or office.

SALUTE TO NURSES | NURSING STUDENTS

Nursing students role is vital to coronavirus fight B Y A NG ELINA MARTIN Tu rlo ck Jou rnal

Nursing students at Stanislaus State returned to class in August, ready to roll up their sleeves and complete their education during a time when they’re needed most. When the coronavirus pandemic first hit California in mid-March, many students who were enrolled in the university’s School of Nursing were close to graduating. Thanks to a campus shutdown and statewide stay-at-home orders that limited access to hospitals, the future nurses worried they wouldn’t be able to complete the necessary inperson clinical hours needed to earn their pin in May. According to School of Nursing Director Mary Jo Stanley, that’s when three area hospitals stepped in to help. Stanislaus State worked with Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock, Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto and St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton, which all helped students close to graduating complete their needed clinical hours. When it came time to graduate, no student was held back. “We have the most amazing community stakeholders and facilities who really support not only the nursing program, but our students. They’ve done a lot to keep students in their facilities,” Stanley said. Nursing students have been serving on the frontlines, with many helping public health complete contact tracing

for confirmed coronavirus cases. Without an adequate number of tracers, public health can fall behind on accurately counting positive cases and their work to stop the rapid spread of COVID-19. “The students thought it was really cool because they had never stepped into that part of public health, which was really in a bind because they needed a lot of contact tracing. They didn’t have enough nurses to do it because they were busy with everything else,” Stanley said. “Our students were a good fit.” Students also helped public health care for ill and at-risk members of the local homeless population, who had been given a place to stay in order to be protected from the virus. In addition, students also worked in clinics and in the hospitals — a firsthand experience like no other during a year like no other. Nursing students going to school during a pandemic may seem to have a leg up on others when it comes to dealing with real world problems, but at the end of the day their mission is the same: help the community. Professors have utilized rapidly-changing information in their lectures, while students have had to adapt on the go while working in clinical settings. “I think our students are of service. They aren’t there to be a burden; they need to learn and are truly there to help. I think that’s what makes this work for us is that our local agencies

recognize that here and we have that small, community feel,” Stanley said. Graduates of Stanislaus State’s School of Nursing have also gone on to make an impact during the pandemic, like Arnold Velasquez, who was part of the first graduating class from the university’s family nurse practitioner master’s program in December 2019. Just a few months later, Velasquez was on his way to New York to help the state as its healthcare system was taxed by the coronavirus. “I think our students are really driven to serve. I think they want to make a difference and I think they want to be impactful in their communities. That’s why most people want to be nurses,” Stanley said. “There are some tough days and you have to be strong...but that’s why our students do it well, because they’re in it for the right reasons.” This semester, campus is still closed at Stanislaus State for all but 52 courses.

SALUTETONURSES

That includes some nursing classes, but only those which require labs and simulations — paramount activities to ensure nurses are prepared upon graduating. Rather than 75 percent, nursing students must complete 50 percent of their clinical hours with the remaining time supplemented by virtual experiences. Stanislaus State continues to work with local hospitals to make sure students are learning and kept safe while doing so. When students arrived for their first fall classes of the semester — masks on their faces and sanitizer in tow — Stanley said they seemed more motivated than ever. “It was exciting to see them back because they really weren’t intimidated, they weren’t afraid. This isn’t stopping them and they don’t see this as a barrier to being a nurse,” Stanley said. “This is what nursing is about...This is what we do.”

SALUTE TO NURSES | SHOWING APPRECIATION

Thank a Nurse

I

f you or a loved one has ever faced a life-threatening situation or a tense moment under medical watch, a licensed nurse likely assisted. Their compassion and knowledge are effective in overcoming emergencies and making patients feel comfortable as they recover. If someone in the nursing field impacted your life, take the time to thank them for their service. Thanking a nurse doesn’t have to cost a fortune. A small token of appreciation can be significant and encourage a professional to excel when working in a highstress environment. If you’re struggling to show a medical expert how their presence changed your life for the better, consider thanking them with these ideas.

HANDWRITTEN NOTE

A personalized, handwritten note is an excellent way to show your gratitude for a nurse. In your letter, document the situation you faced and how the nurse’s assistance made you feel comforted. You should consider using high-quality paper or a durable card so the nurse can look back on the note when they face challenges throughout their career. A Healthy Gift Basket While nurses dedicate their lives to improving the health of others, sometimes their own wellbeing gets overlooked. You can provide them with high-protein snacks like beef jerky or nuts and beneficial fruits to boost their energy. Many nurses also rely on small levels of caffeine to get through rigorous shifts. Consider gifting them with a gift card to a local coffee shop or a bag of freshly grounded beans.

COMFORTABLE CLOTHING

Nurses are on their feet for an extended portion of their workday. Check the hospital gift shop or your local outlet store for a pair of universal compression socks. Pressure from these stockings promotes blood flow by

enhancing the efficiency of blood vessels. If you know the nurse’s approximate shoe size, you can also consider gifting them with a pair that uses memoryfoam padding or a comfortable insert. You may also find unique scrubs at a uniform shop that showcases their personality. Whether you buy a gift for your nurse or draft a compassionate letter to show your appreciation, your gratitude will be appreciated.
