Back to the gridiron EDDIE RUIZ TURLOCK JOURNAL

This year’s prep football season for the Turlock Journal is shaping up to be another great time under the Friday (and sometimes Thursday) night lights! That’s saying something seeing as 2018 was a historic season for local teams. Two schools notched section and state championships in Denair and Hilmar, while Turlock and Pitman dominated the newly created Central California Ath-

“Going into my fourth season covering high school football, I can definitely say that I become even more excited to cover our local athletes from the sideline with each passing year. I have to keep an eye out though, because these kids have almost accidentally tackled me at least seven times. Here’s to a fun — and safe — season! “

letic League and combined lost just once—Pitman fell to Turlock in the Harvest Bowl. This season will also see the addition of a new team to the Journal’s coverage area in Hughson High. We are very excited to once again cover the Huskies! The cover of this year’s tab is the creation of award-winning Journal artist Harold George. Each team of the Journal’s coverage area chose a player to represent their squad on the cover.

Representing Turlock High is standout defensive lineman Tamirr Bullock. At 6-foot-1 and just under 250 pounds, Bullock already has multiple Division-I colleges interested in the senior who has shown time and time again the ability to dominate the

Hilmar High’s Trent Crowley has a history of being a multiplesport athlete, but with football, he thrives, returning as a big-time utility player who was also part of last year’s section and state title runs. Look for Crowley to contribute all around — defensively, offensively and maybe even on special teams. For Denair, the Coyotes return their section and state champion quarterback Elvis Silva and they are excited to compete with a herd of all-league players returning. There is little doubt that the Coyotes with Silva under center will compete for a Southern League title.

Hughson High’s Steven Morris is the representative for the Huskies this year. Standing 6-foot-4 and with an impressive wingspan, look for the athlete to become one of the biggest threats in the air during the season. PREVIEW: Pitman High has had just four head coaches and Lance Weckerle will become the fourth to take the field after he was named the new head coach in the spring. He takes over a program that is coming off a record-breaking season, matching the most wins in a single season with 10. This year’s team representative is Chris Avalos, a middle linebacker with a multitude of abilities and athleticism that should help lift a squad that has very little to no starters returning at the varsity level. Matching up with Turlock is going to be interesting this year, but a crosstown rivalry is usually a toss-up no matter what. “I am expecting our young men to come out and compete everyday really, we just talk about practicing with a purpose and trying to win each rep and doing things the right way and to let the scoreboard take care of itself,” said Weckerle. “Not worried about the outcome, we will be successful, sometimes with the score in our favor and sometimes not.” Along with Avalos, some of the returners include Matt Nissan, Juan Mora, Mario Bravo and Harinder Garcha. “Jullien Lindo got playtime at the tailback spot, so at the LB, line and RB WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 2019

as well we do have returners back that played and had experience last year, so we will rely on that nucleus to carry over and take on a leadership role this year,” said Weckerle. The Pride will look to repeat their success this year by starting out the same as last season with a scrimmage against small-school powerhouse Hilmar High. 6

we’ve ever had across all levels.” Jayden Jackson could very well be the most complete and dynamic middle linebacker in the CCAL this fall after he had a memorable year as a junior. Jackson showed time and time again his ability to shoot the gap with finesse and ferocity. His strength fared well with most of the linemen he played against, especially in a league where he was a step above with his peers. Brock Paslay, Anthony Frias, Holden Baldwin, Miguel Pena and Everett Johnson are the core of the Bulldogs offense. “They all played significant roles during their junior year and we are leaning on them a lot this season for consistency in our execution,” said Peterson. They have also won three straight league championships, including two Central California Conference titles and last year’s inaugural CCAL crown. During the last five seasons, they have also reached the postseason in all of those years while winning 38 games. “We want people to know they are in a football game when they play us. This

PREVIEW: Hilmar High’s 2018 record will be tough to repeat. Last year’s team won a Sac-Joaquin Section (D-VI) Championship and a CIF State (D-VI AA) title — the first time Hilmar has accomplished both in the same year. Also, the first time they won state. “Luckily, we have a rich tradition, seems every year we are trying to be competitive and I think, hopefully, we build the program that has people’s attention,” said head coach Frank Marques. “I think it is about reloading. I think we will be exciting again this year, status quo, what is expected of us.” The Yellowjackets lost a total of 18 seniors to graduation, but return plenty of standouts, some that were only sophomores a year ago. These returning standouts include Seth Miguel, Cole Bailey and Trace Van Guilder. They should provide the team with some excellent play as starters. Standout wide receiver Aidan Azevedo is also back, standing 6-foot-3. He was critical in the Yellowjackets’ late postseason run last year, consistently making crucial grabs when his name was called. This should help and make the passing game easier for Miguel, who will be the team’s starting quarterback. Esteban Juarez and Efrain Duenas should be stalwarts on the line, after they return from a squad that was superior in the trenches last season. Trent Crowley is one of the many utility players that should also provide many yardage chances as a skill player. Standout lineman and kicker Miguel Padilla will also be back and WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 2019

It will be difficult to repeat last year’s success, but head coach Frank Marques and his staff make sure all the Hilmar teams are ready year in and year out. Look for Hilmar to be one of the most competitive teams in the section and in their division once again and definitely make a strong case for the postseason. “Even before me, Hilmar has had a great tradition and I want to see it continues,” Marques added. “I think we have a really good team with great team chemistry. This year’s seniors only lost one game as sophomores; the juniors were undefeated as sophomores, only lost one game, so don’t underestimate our team, we have a lot of talent. We are deep at all positions; we have skilled guys.” 10

PREVIEW: The 2018 season was historic for the Denair High football program. The Coyotes notched a Sac-Joaquin Section title (D-VII) and a State Championship (D-VII AA). They only fell once last year — to the team that went on to play in the Division-VI Sac-Joaquin Section title game, Ripon Christian. Other than that mishap, no team that faced them last fall was able to match their intensity, which included a relentless ground attack and the best line in the Southern League. Following their monumental run this past fall, coach Anthony Armas and his squad feel confident of possibly making another successful run, maybe not like last year, but a good one that has them returning multiple players that stood well above their peers just a year ago. Dylan De Silva, Carlo Morales, Derek Starkey, Elvis Silva, Will Knox and Ulises Corrales are those returners. “We’re really trying to put last year in our rearview mirror,” said Armas. “It was a great year. We had a lot of fun last year, but our players and staff know that it’s over and we’re all looking forward to writing a new chapter for our program. “Our goal has always been to make a run at the league title and go from there,” said Armas. PREVIEW: If there is one team that is the Darkhorse of the Trans-Valley League, it is the Hughson High Huskies varsity football team. The Huskies made strides last season and they head into the fall with high hopes and expectations after a 5-6 season last year. “I am excited about this year, learned a lot in the first year, wasn’t hired until June 12 of last year and playing catch up still,” said Hughson head coach Shaun King. “A lot of things I experienced last year and this year we made a lot of changes in the offseason…still not there yet, where we want to be, but we are getting there. We’re starting to see a shift and that goes to all these good coaches that I have.” The roster of 48 includes multiple standouts and they are going to need it when they face what King calls, “the gauntlet.” “We have not had success against the gauntlet in MC, Ripon, Hilmar and Escalon,” said King. “What Hilmar has is what we want, I can tell you we are going to compete. We had the ball bounce our way sometimes, but then Escalon is loaded as well, just such a tough league that we are in, probably the best small school league around.” The year could come with growing pains since King is expecting to start 14 juniors. They are also still looking for their vocal leaders. “We are still looking for leadership, haven’t gotten that yet,” said King. “We are still going to build and still expanding from what we started last year.” A major upside to this season for Hughson is the WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 21, 2019

building of the future. The school is once again boasting a freshman squad after last year’s numbers didn’t allow a team to be fielded. Hughson is anticipating a battle at the quarterback position, but so far it looks like Aiden Meyer could be taking majority of the snaps from under center. “Aiden is a solid guy and then, of course, our sophomore we had up right tackle, starting at left tackle this year in Damian Caetano,” said King. “Junior Garret Hicks went to masters in wrestling; this guy has stepped up and at defensive end and we are very excited.” Joining Morris on the receiving end is 6-foot-3 George Crayton as well. 14
