Editor’s Letter Welcome to Turnaround’s November 2016 buyer’s notes! Our veritable feast of glorious titles this month kicks off with not one, but TWO new titles by Elena Ferrante! If you, like we at Turnaround and nearly everyone else in the literati, have #FerranteFever, these are sure to please! The Beach at Night (p. 22; Europa Editions, 9781609453701, £7.99) is a children’s picture book with a difference. Writing for the Key Stage 2 market, Ferrante returns to the novel that she considers to be the turning point in her development as a writer: The Lost Daughter (Europa Editions, 9781933372426, £8.99, also available from Turnaround).
This story takes the form of a children’s fable told from the point of view of lost doll, Celina. Featuring unique, stirring illustrations by Mara Cerri, this is a children’s book that adults will love as well! The second Ferrante book in our catalogue this month is Frantumaglia (p. 27; Europa Editions, 9781609452926, £16.99), which was previously announced with the title Fragments. The title doesn’t quite translate to ‘fragments’... we are told this is a bona fide Ferrante-ism! In this nonfiction collection of letters, interviews and occasional writings, the reclusive Italian author addresses her unwavering decision to remain out of the public eye, her literary inspirations, Italian politics and culture, and the role of the writer (and the publisher) in modern society. Ferrante’s voice is as direct, penetrating, acute, inspiring, and intimate as it is in her acclaimed novels. For the many of us dying to know more about Ferrante as a person, this is probably the closest we will ever get! Also in the realm of literary memoirs – we are all bookish folks, after all! – is Welsh writer and filmmaker Iain Sinclair’s ‘accidental novel’ about those who have inspired his many London books. My Favourite London Devils (p. 29; Tangerine Press, 9781910691175, £12) is described as a “gazetteer of influences and enthusiasms. A charge sheet. And a fragmented autobiography laid out through a series of portraits as picaresque as John Aubrey’s Brief Lives.” It features (unreliable) memories, critiques and interviews with the London writers Sinclair has met and admired – including Peter Ackroyd, Michael Moorcock, JG Ballard and Angela Carter.

Now then, moving away from our insular bubble of literature, daaahling, we have superheroes galore! We’re particularly excited for Civil War II (p. 15; Panini Comics / Marvel, 9781846537554, £14.99), the trade graphic novel that collects issues 0-7 of Civil War II, the sequel storyline to uber-popular Civil War (many of the related titles are also available from Turnaround). Here we see the opposing factions of superheroes led by Captain Marvel and Iron Man come into conflict when a new super powered person emerges with the ability to predict the future. Penned by Marvel superstar Brian Michael Bendis and brought to life by artists David Marquez and Justin Ponsor, this story promises to change the landscape of the Marvel universe for years to come! Along with Ferrante’s The Beach at Night, some of our other stellar children’s book selections this month are China Mieville’s The Worst Breakfast (p. 21; Akashic Books, 9781617754868, £12.99), Kurt Vonnegut’s Sun Moon Star (p. 23; Seven Stories, 9781609807245, £12.99) & the new edition of Innosanto Nagara’s popular ABC book A is for Activist (p. 22; Seven Stories, 9781609806934, £12.99). Finally, for those seeking a bit of adventure, we have Jim Richards’ Gold Rush (p. 38; September Publishing, 9781910463369, £10.99). When Jim Richards left home to make his fortune in a gold rush, he had no language skills, no money and no idea. But when he found diamond-filled pot holes in the remote rivers of Guyana, his problems really began. Chasing gold and diamond rushes around the world, Richards worked with local miners in some of the maddest, baddest and most dangerous places on earth. His dramatic journey ranges from the piranha-infested rivers of South America to the blazing deserts of Australia, from the world’s biggest mining scam in Indonesia to the war-torn jungles of Laos. You know how the story goes from there: to find the gold, Jim first had to find himself. Absolutely riveting and, at times, unbelievable, Gold Rush is the ultimate story for the most adventurous readers out there – or those who simply think they are!

The Forbidden Line, the November release from Galley Beggar Press, is a monster. It’s fat, uncompromising and gloriously eccentric. Which is as it should be since it’s a retelling of Don Quixote combined with a recreation of the Peasant’s Revolt; a gleeful hybrid of science, pseudo-science, absurd theory and profound, ingenious philosophy. The wildest book to be released on Cervantes’ 400th anniversary. This debut collection from Eley Williams centres upon the difficulties of communication and the way one’s thoughts may never be fully communicable and yet can overwhelm you. Attrib. celebrates the tricksiness of language just as it confronts its limits. Correspondingly, the stories are littered with the physical ephemera of language: dictionaries, dog-eared pages, bookmarks and old coffee stains on older books. WHEN MEMORY COMES
Friedlander, Saul; Messaud, Claire & Lane, Helen R. (trans.)
Friedländer brings his life story movingly to life, shifting between his Israeli present and his European past with grace and restraint. MOVEMENT OF THE PEOPLE Migration in an Age of Globalization Flynn, Don
This is a highly topical book that helps to place debates around immigration and refugees within a wider context. It challenges opinions and assumptions and explains how modern migration is a fundamental part of increasingly integrated global markets. People are often forced to move - whether by economic circumstances, conflict or environmental conditions - rather than exercising their free will. It also demonstrates how receiving countries generally benefit from the arrival of new workers. Timely and increasingly relevant. KEY SELLING POINTS • A highly topical and increasingly relevant look at migrants rights. • Places the rights of migrants at the heart of debate about the free market, globalization and economic development. • Shows how, if globalization is to be a force for good, then migrants rights are crucial. • Author is the director of Migrant Rights Network (MRN). Publication coincides with MRN’s 10th anniversary. ISBN 13: 9781780263441, 224pp p/b, £9.99 Published by NEW INTERNATIONALIST Rep Territories: UK, Ireland, Europe, Middle & Far East

KRAMPUS AND THE OLD, DARK CHRISTMAS, THE
Roots and Rebirth of the Folkloric Devil Ridenour, Al
The Krampus, a folkloric devil associated with St Nicholas in Alpine Austria and Germany, has been embraced by the counterculture and is lately skewing mainstream. The new Christmas he seems to embody is ironically closer to an ancient understanding of the holiday as a perilous, haunted season. OUT OF THE RUINS
The Emergence of Radical Informal Learning Spaces Haworth, Robert H. (ed) & Elmore, John M. (ed)
Contemporary educational practices are heeding the calls of Wall Street for more corporate control, privatisation and standardised accountability. In many cases, educational policies are created to uphold and serve particular social, political and economic ends. Schools, in a sense, have been tools to reproduce hierarchical, authoritarian and hyper-individualistic models of social order. The important news is that emancipatory educational practices are emerging. Out of the Ruins sets out to explore and discuss the emergence of alternative learning spaces. KEY SELLING POINTS • Explores the emergence of alternative learning spaces that directly challenge capitalism and statism within education. • Focuses on informal learning as a way to contest the commodification and privatisation of public education. • Education has long been at the forefront of manufacturing and exploiting particular populations within our society. ANARCHY IN ACTION Ward, Colin
The argument of this book is that an anarchist society, a society which organises itself without authority, is always in existence. Through a wide-ranging analysis - drawing on examples from education, urban planning, welfare, housing, the environment, the workplace, and the family, to name but a few - Colin Ward demonstrates that the roots of anarchist practice are not so alien or quixotic as they might at first seem but lie precisely in the ways that people have always tended to organise themselves when left alone to do so. KEY SELLING POINTS • An accessible introduction for those new to anarchism and pause for thought for those who are too quick to dismiss it. • Ward was Britain’s foremost anarchist writer. • He edited Freedom newspaper and then Anarchy magazine from 1947-1970. • He was also a columnist for New Statesman, New Society, Freedom and Town and Country Planning. DELIVERANCE FROM SLAVERY: ATTEMPTING A BIBLICAL THEOLOGY IN THE SERVICE OF LIBERATION Historical Materialism Volume 110 Boer, Dick
‘Delivery from slavery’: these words, taken from a Dutch labour movement song, perfectly map onto the Bible’s central concern. They are also similar to the Torah’s key phrase: ‘I am YHWH, your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage’ (Ex 20:2). The words are invoked here to serve as an axiom to be introduced into the modern period. The watchword ‘delivery from slavery’ translates the biblical message of the exodus from slavery into the theory and practice of a modern liberation movement. This work argues that biblical theology tires to ‘update the message’. MARX’S ECONOMIC MANUSCRIPTS OF 1864-1865 Historical Materialism Volume 100 Moseley, Fred (ed)
Marx’s only full draft of Volume III of Capital was written in the Economic Manuscript of 1864-1865. The Volume III that we know was heavily edited by Engels. It has been a longstanding question in Marxian scholarship whether or not there are significant differences between Marx’s original manuscript and Engels’s edited version. The publication of this English translation of Marx’s original manuscript is thus an important event in Marxian scholarship. English-speaking Marxist scholars can finally compare Engels’s Volume III with Marx’s original manuscript. PHILOSOPHY OF LIVING EXPERIENCE: POPULAR OUTLINES, THE Historical Materialism Volume 111 Rowley, David G.
The Philosophy of Living Experience is the single best introduction to the thought of Alexander Bogdanov (18731928), a Russian polymath who was co-founder, with Lenin, of the Bolshevik Party. His landmark achievements are Empiriomonism (1904-6), a philosophy of radical empiricism that he developed to replace what he considered to be the crude materialism of contemporary Marxists, and Tektology: Universal Organisational Science (1912-17), a precursor of cybernetics and systems theory. The Philosophy of Living Experience (1913) was written at a transitional point between them. POLITICS OF TRANSINDIVIDUALITY, THE Historical Materialism Volume 106 Read, Jason
The Politics of Transindividuality re-examines social relations and subjectivity through the concept of transindividuality. Transindividuality is understood as the mutual constitution of individuality and collectivity, and as such it intersects with politics and economics, philosophical speculation and political practice. While the term transindividuality is drawn from the work of Gilbert Simondon, this book views it broadly, examining such canonical figures as Spinoza, Hegel, and Marx, as well as contemporary debates involving Etienne Balibar and others. PRACTICAL ESSENCE OF MAN: THE ‘ACTIVITY APPROACH’ IN LATE SOVIET PHILOSOPHY, THE
Historical Materialism Volume 108 Maidansky, Andrey (ed) & Oittinen, Vesa (ed)
For the first time, this book presents to Western readers a current in the late Soviet philosophy of the 1960s and 1970s known as the ‘activity approach’. It had to some degree a counterpart in so-called cultural-historical psychology, but whilst the work of Vygotsky and Leontyev was received in the West decades ago, its sibling in philosophy has remained virtually unnoticed. Started by Evald Ilyenkov in the early ’60s, the activity approach soon became an intellectual mode, leading to several different interpretations of human activity and challenging Marx and Lenin. PRISMS OF GRAMSCI: THE POLITICAL FORMULA OF THE UNITED FRONT, THE Historical Materialism Volume 103 Del Roio, Marcos
In this work, Marcos Del Roio analyses Gramsci’s pre-prison political-theoretical activity in light of a radical thesis: that throughout Gramsci’s life we see a total continuity between his political praxis and his philosophical reflection. That is not to ignore the changes, turns, and even fractures in the Sardinian communist’s thinking across his brief but rich existence. This book’s title, referring to the metaphor of a ray of light passing through a prism, expresses this counterpoint between identity and diversity. THATCHERITE OFFENSIVE: A NEO-POULANTZASIAN ANALYSIS, THE Historical Materialism Volume 107 Gallas, Alexander
In The Thatcherite Offensive, Alexander Gallas provides a class-centred political analysis of Thatcherism. Drawing upon Greek state theorist Nicos Poulantzas, he challenges both mainstream and critical accounts of British politics in the 1980s and 90s. He shows that Thatcherism’s success and novelty, indeed its unity as a political project, lay in the fact that the Thatcher governments profoundly shifted class relations in Britain in favour of capital and restructured the institutions underpinning class domination. UTOPIA AND THE DIALECTIC IN LATIN AMERICA LIBERATION
Studies in Critical Social Science Volume 78 Gogol, Eugene
Utopia and the Dialectic in Latin American Liberation begins by examining the concept of utopia in Latin American thought, particularly its roots within indigenous emancipatory practice, and suggests that within this concept of utopia can be found a resonance with the dialectic of negativity that Hegel developed under the impact of the French Revolution, further developed by such thinker-activists as Marx, Lenin and Raya Dunayevskaya. The study concludes by discussing a dialectic of philosophy and organization in the context of Latin American liberation. JOURNEY TO THE LAND OF THE REAL Segalen, Victor
Victor Segalen (1878-1919) was a doctor, a traveller (principally in Polynesia and China), and above all else, a great poet. An admirer especially of Gauguin and Rimbaud, the journey undertaken in this, his last and most important work, is that between the imagined and the real: ‘neither a poem about a journey, nor the travel diary of a wanderer’s dream’. Journey to the Land of the Real is the summation of the author’s life as both traveller and poet, and a summation that is all the more surprising since he could know nothing of his imminent and mysterious death. KEY SELLING POINTS • A classic of travel writing translated for the first time. • Recounts an actual expedition through China to the borders of Tibet in the last years of the First World War. • A masterpiece that effortlessly transcends the genre of ‘travel-writing’, with elements of prose and poetry. • Reveals a lucid, eloquent and very likeable author at the height of his powers.
