“A master storyteller” - Neil Gaiman
SEPTEMBER 2016 | KNOCKABOUT PUBLISHING
Editor’s Letter Welcome to Turnaround’s March 2017 buyer’s notes, in which the spring publishing season is fully in swing! First up is a powerful psychological thriller set during the Bosnian War: Jean-Christophe Rufin’s Checkpoint (p.4; Europa Editions, 9781609453725, p/b £12.99). The story follows four different men on a convoy, each in their own way different from the clichéd idea of the average humanitarian aid worker. As they reveal the secret wounds that led them to the Balkans, questions about what it means to help others and take action begin to come to light. Both a founder of Medicins Sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders) and a twotime winner of the Prix Goncourt, Rufin asks poignant questions about the role of humanitarian action in today’s world in a subtle, enthralling way. According to Le Nouvel Observateur, reviewing the French edition: “Jean-Christophe Rufin has written an adventure book on moving terrain. [...] The success of this great novel lies in its suspense and in the meticulous psychology of its protagonists.” Want more thrillers-in-translation? Be sure you don’t miss Cuban author Leonardo Padura’s Heretics (p. 7; Bitter Lemon Press, 9781908524782, p/b £12.99). Heretics sees the return of police inspector Mario Conde, the protagonist of bestselling crime series Havana Quartet and Havana Fever. Just last year, Padura won the Princess of Asturias award for literature, the Spanish equivalent of the Nobel Prize.
Heading into the graphic novel section, we can’t stop shouting about Good News Bible: The Deadline Strips of Shaky Kane (p. 12; Breakdown Press, 9780957438149, p/b £18.99). Lovingly compiled by British comics publisher Breakdown Press, Good News Bible collects the entirety of Shaky Kane’s work from the classic ’90s magazine Deadline for the first time. Shaky Kane emerged on the UK comics scene in the mid-’80s, drawing for such publications as NME, Escape, Deadline, 2000 AD, Judge Dredd Megazine and Revolver. Often described as both hallucinatory and psychedelic, Kane’s work pushes at the limits of taste, dragging a scalpel down the veil of illusion, making you see the world as it really is. This is some of the best of the best work from comics’ Modern Age from one of British comics’ greatest geniuses.

Looking for more out-there comics? Check out Zonzo (p. 16; Fantagraphics, 9781606999851, h/b £10) by Joan Cornella. Cornella became a social media sensation with his first book, the viciously funny Mox Nox (Fantagraphics, also available from Turnaround), and now boasts millions of fans and followers from around the world. Zonzo is unmistakably Cornella’s work, drawn in his instantly recognisable style: wordless with vividly bright colours and... well... frankly, a bit messed up! Moving into more controversial territory is Why I Am Not a Feminist (p. 25; Melville House Publishing, 9781612196015, h/b £17.99) by Jessica Crispin. Crispin is already well known to the book world as the founder and editor-in-chief of Bookslut, one of the earliest and most influential book blogs of the past ten years. While the book’s title may seem surprising from a writer so passionate about the feminist cause, Why I Am Not a Feminist in fact argues that today’s feminism has sacrificed meaning for acceptance, and that true revolution cannot happen amidst banal politeness. Crispin pens a radical, fearless call for revolution, demanding nothing less than the total dismantling of a system of oppression. The conversation surrounding feminism in 2017 will undoubtedly be influenced by Crispin’s narrative, and one can be absolutely certain of one thing: the debate will be fierce.
Don’t Miss… We Learn at Home and We Go Out By Miriam Elia and Ezra Elia Published by Dung Beetle Press 9780992834999 / 9780992834982 £7.99, September 2016 Elia follows up on her 2015 runaway hit We Go to the Gallery (also available from Turnaround) with two new eye-wateringly hilarious Dung Beetle Learning Scheme titles.

WE, ROBOTS
Staying Human in the Age of Big Data White, Curtis
In the noble tradition of Jaron Lanier’s You Are Not a Gadget (Penguin, 2011), Curtis White’s We, Robots takes the radical position that maybe we shouldn’t cede every bit of control, humanity, and decision making to technology, and that the techno-futurists in our mix have things dangerously backwards. What a notion! In this sharply argued and rousing book, White not only attacks the technology-loving establishment, but offers a beautiful and essential alternative.

Following the bestselling success of the first title ‘We go to the Gallery’ (see left), Dung Beetle books are proud to announce the publication of two new titles in the scheme. Both will further the child’s progress by undermining everything that he understands to be true, valuable or just. This demonstrates Dung Beetles core principle of development through total annihilation of self worth, and will help to create the next generation of the kind, loving and utterly brainless intellectual elites. In book 1b of the Dung Beetle Learning series, Mummy grounds all learning in a feelings-based outlook, free of any actual facts or skills, re-evaluating core subjects such as mathematics, religion, philosophy and art. In book 1c a simple stroll down the local high street is magically illuminated by Mummy’s insights into the nature of society, religion, art and the various other forms of hierarchical or patriarchal oppression. M.Elia and E.Elia are highly successful reclusives, who live in a cave and have no contact with the outside world. They maintain a strict policy of no contact with anyone they disagree with.
